Massanutten magazine | 1 FABULOUS FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY At Massanutten, you’ll find plenty of outdoor recreational activities to keep your entire family busy and happy. #massresort 2 | MassResort.com Massanutten is one of the Mid-Atlantic region’s best winter resort destinations, with cold-weather activities that range far beyond skiing and snowboarding to include snow tubing, ice skating, and an Indoor WaterPark. Located in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, visitors to our resort enjoy spectacular views across some of Virginia’s most scenic mountain landscapes. We've got 1,110 feet of vertical drop—that's the most of any ski resort in Virginia, Maryland, or Pennsylvania! Massanutten magazine | 3 SKIING & SNOWBOARDING We have 14 trails on 72 skiable acres. Our trails are marked for beginner, intermediate, and advanced skiers. Our longest run, ParaDice, is measured at 4,100 feet in length. Skiers and snowboarders who enjoy riding rails, jumps, and boxes have their choice of the Easy Street Terrain Park, which utilizes smaller features to expedite the learning process, or the CMB Terrain Park that has larger features for those ready to take it to the next level. 4 | MassResort.com Fast Facts Base Altitude: 1,750 Feet Peak Altitude: 2,925 Feet Lift Details: 3 Quad Chairs 1 Triple Chair 3 Surface Lifts UNWIND AT base camp: OUR NEWEST APRES-SKI ATTRACTION by Chase Kiddy After a day out on the mountain, now you can settle in slopeside! internal heating—all within a few feet of the slopes! There’s a trendy new hotspot at the base of the slopes. Located outside of the Ski Lodge, this 5,000 square foot wooden deck houses a bar completely covered by one large, weather-proof umbrella. Base Camp comfortably seats 100 people under the canopy. Additional seating for 100+ people is available on the expanded deck area. This indoor-outdoor eatery is the perfect location to enjoy a warm beverage, a cold beer on tap, or an after-ski meal. You’ll enjoy fabulous views from under the 40-foot wide umbrella, which is enclosed in a circle by retractable glass panels. The transparent glass functions as both a door to the outside and, when necessary, insulation from the weather. When the temperature plummets or the snow falls, the umbrella simply clamps down over the glass sides, providing a climate-controlled bar, complete with Picture above is a Meissl Umbrella Bar in Germany. Umbrella bars are now growing in popularity in the United States, but they’re originally a European trend. For this project, we worked with Austria-based Meissl—known for creating beautiful open-air environments around the world. Massanutten magazine | 5 the snow sports learning center GLEAMING NEW SKI SCHOOL Look for our new 13,000 square-foot Snow Sports Learning Center, a multipurpose complex that serves as the home base for Massanutten’s fastgrowing ski school. Designed to be architecturally compatible with the nearby Ski Lodge, the structure echoes the “board and batten” architectural motif established by the main lodge. The placement of the building spans a creek, which is easily visible from the outside deck. Water flows all year under the building, and will increase dramatically during spring snowmelt and rainstorm activity. Inside, the new building provides a welcoming and comfortable place for lesson check-in. Also included are 6 | MassResort.com instructor facilities and a lunch/snack area for youth enrolled in the Mountain Cruiser instructional program. The Snow Sports Learning Center is located adjacent to the Ski Lodge, and is situated within easy reach of surface lifts—ideal for beginning skiers. TAKE A LESSON Massanutten’s Snow Sports Learning Center offers daily lesson programs for skiers and snowboarders that range from a first day experience to an advanced lesson that can improve technique. We are members of the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) and the American Association of Snowboard Instructors (AASI). Most lesson programs can be purchased at any ticket window daily with no reservations required. Pathway Program The Pathway program is designed with a beginner skier or snowboarder in mind. Participants in the Pathway program will progress through two one-hour group lessons on our easiest terrain. These lessons focus on the basics of how to turn, stop, and use the lifts safely. This program is ideal for adults and children ages 7+. Mountain Cruisers Children's Program We offer a comprehensive youth instructional program, ranging from beginner to advanced levels in both skiing (ages 4 to 12 years) and snowboarding (ages 7 to 12 years.) The Mountain Cruisers program often fills up weeks in advance, so reservations are required. Full package details are available online. Advanced Beginner & Intermediate Clinics Need a refresher course? This 90-minute group clinic will help you broaden your skill base and gain confidence on the slopes. These clinics are tailored for those who can easily negotiate intermediate terrain, but would like to improve ability and technique. Great for adults and children ages 7+. PRIVATE LESSONS If individual attention is what you crave, take to the slopes with your own personal coach! All ages and abilities welcome, but reservations are required. ADAPTIVE INSTRUCTION Did you know Massanutten partners with Therapeutic Adventures (TAonline. org) to offer an individualized approach to adaptive snow sports instruction? Due to the specialized nature of this program, please reserve in advance. Safety Tips From the Pros No matter how you decide to enjoy the slopes, we urge skiers and riders alike to follow these slope safety tips: 1 Always stay in control, and be able to stop or avoid other people or objects. 2 People ahead of you have the right of way. It is your responsibility to avoid them. 3 You must not stop where you obstruct a trail, or are not visible from above. 4 Whenever starting downhill or merging into a trail, look uphill and yield to others. 5 Always use devices to help prevent runaway equipment. 6 Observe all posted signs and warnings. Keep off closed trails and out of closed areas. 7 Prior to using any lift, you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride, and unload safely. Safety Begins With You! 8 | MassResort.com Ladies first! We were thrilled that SheJumps©, a national nonprofit organization with a mission to increase the participation of females in outdoor activities, chose Massanutten Resort for their first ever Southeast USA snow event last year. The event cultivates opportunities for women to have fun and connect with friends—new and old. All ability levels and ages are encouraged to attend. If you’d like to learn more about taking part in our 2016 SheJumps© event, which will be held on Saturday, January 23rd. Contact Kelly Drewnowski: kdrewnowski@shejumps.org. #shejumps Massanutten magazine | 9 let it snow! The best kind of powder falls naturally and often. Fortunately, Massanutten Peak often catches cold air and moisture as it rises against the steep elevation of our ridgeline. To supplement natural snowfall, we add machine-made snow at every opportunity. New this year! We have added 25 high-output, fan-style snowmaking guns that are partially automated so our operators can remotely turn on and off the snowguns to quickly respond to changing weather conditions. THE NIGHT SHIFT: CORDUROY DREAMS Do you ever wonder who is responsible for transforming the messy carved-up slopes each evening into the corduroy perfection you see on the first runs of the day? Meet Mike Mueller, Massanutten’s Mountain Man! Thanks to Mike and his dedicated team, our skiers and snowboarders enjoy beautiful well-groomed snow surfaces on our ski slopes and terrain parks. How did you get started in snowmaking? I was exposed to it at an early age because my grandfather had a third ownership in a ski area in central New York. There were about 60 ski areas where the natural lake effect took care of all the snowmaking. Now, it’s become a serious resort industry. Then, I studied agricultural engineering in school. Snowmaking can be a complex process—how does it work? Water droplets have to be small and fine enough that when their in a plume and blown into cold, ambient air, they’ll form crystals and freeze. Painter’s Pond is our water source on the mountain. After that, mankind can dictate the rest of the process. 10 | MassResort.com “It takes a skilled driver to sculpt and create good flow and pace through a terrain park. I think of it like an artist painting a canvas.” -Mountain Manager, Snow & Mountain Recreation What equipment do you use? Our grooming vehicles are our big assets. They’re 370 horsepower machines, fully hydrostatic. They’re very complex and require individuals who are careful and conscientious in operating that machine, and be able to maximize its ability to prep the snow surface every night. How long does it take to groom the slopes? We can cover about four to five acres an hour. That includes doing all your backups and cleanups and passes. Our machine operators start around 10:30 pm, then we groom in shifts throughout the night. By dawn, the finetuning starts to happen and we dress up the slopes prior to the first run. Does it take specialized training to operate the machines? We look for individuals who have expertise in equipment operation. It’s almost like playing a video game now, there’s so many buttons and bells and whistles. It’s hand-eye coordination. It’s a total team effort and requires different people with different skill sets to make it all work. dining events waterpark save on over 50 activities!
