ESSENTIAL OILS
Aroma for the skin
The healing effects of essential oils have been known for millennia.
Cosmetics use their positive influence on the body, spirit and soul. They
fulfil numerous important care functions in high quality foot care products.
T
The oils evaporate rapidly and dissipate into
the air. In botany, they provide protection
against bacteria, fungi and viruses, and lend
the plant its characteristic scent with which
some attract insects and some keep them
away. In the plant’s metabolism, they accelerate or slow down important biochemical
processes.
The effects of smells
Essential oils have a complex acting mechanism. On the one hand, they unfold their
effects through the sense of smell. The nose
is the only sensory organ which transmits
impulses directly into the brain. The approximately two million scent cells which are
located in the nasal mucous membranes
trigger stimuli due to the scent substances
which then reach the limbic system. This is
a region of the brain which is important for
our mental and physical well-being.
Feelings, emotional behaviour, sexuality as
well as memory are activated from here.
The system also influences the work of the
hypothalamus, which, as the brain’s superior “switchboard”, governs all important
functions of life such as the cardiovascular
system, digestion, respiration, sleep, the
immune system and the hormonal system.
The limbic system can be used to explain
why physical and mental well-being are so
closely linked.
The skin also smells
The limbic system is also directly connected to the organ which is our skin. The oils
can unfold their positive effects on the
body, spirit and soul as components of cosmetic products as well. Due to this link, the
skin is a reflection of our state, for illnesses
and mental uneasiness are frequently
shown by the skin: red with anger, pale with
fear, worry lines, stress acne – these are
known examples of this link.
Essential oils now release so-called messenger substances (neurotransmitters)
which transmit stimuli into the limbic system and stimulate the physical as well as
mental-spiritual state. The effect is holistic
as essential oils influence many important
body functions as well as mental-spiritual
processes through a variety of connections.
As essential oils have a positive influence
on the emotional state, important body
functions, the hormone household and also
on the immune system, they provide valuable cosmetic support.
Varied effects
But essential oils also have a direct cosmetic effect. With their antibacterial action,
for instance, they contribute to protecting
the skin. Viruses and fungi are less likely to
penetrate the natural skin barrier when the
skin is nourished with essential additives.
Other ingredients lend some essential oils
properties of supporting healing, soothing

he use of plant essential oils is a longstanding tradition. Even the ancient
Egyptians, Greek and Romans
utilised the soothing effects of essential
scents. These are embedded into plant
parts such as flowers, leaves, stems, seeds,
roots or peels in the form of tiny oil droplets.
The aromatic substances are formed as
organic metabolic products in the plant,
both during photosynthesis in the daytime
and during regeneration processes at night.
Known since millennia and often relied on: the positive effects of essential oils are equally valued
in medicine and cosmetics.
the skin, as well as skin-regenerating and
inflammation-preventing properties. Examples are extracts made from chamomile
flowers, arnica flowers and feverfew. One of
the best known active substances of this
type for the care of sensitive, irritated or
reddened skin is bisabolol from the essential oils of chamomile.
GEHWOL uses traditionally selected, high
quality essential substances to care for foot
and leg skin. For example:
Eucalyptus oil: among other things, it
boosts activity, heals wounds, soothes pain
and positively influences our mental capacities.
Mountain pine oil: among other things, it
enlivens, kills pathogens, deodorises, activates the circulation and relaxes.
Lavender oil: among other things, it calms,
relaxes, refreshes, soothes, nourishes the
skin, counteracts inflammation, heals
wounds and prevents foot fungus.
Citronella oil: among other things, strong
pathogen-killing effect, supports healing,
brightens the mood, supports concentration.
Mint oil (menthol): among other things,
cooling, antimicrobial, soothes itching,
relaxant, deodorising.
Rosemary oil (medicinal plant of the year
2011): among other things, warming, activating, helps with mental and physical
exhaustion.
Thyme oil: among other things, strengthens the defences, encouraging, strengthens
the will, enlivening, strengthens the nerves.
Camphor essence: among other things,
activates the circulation, activates the
metabolism, relaxant, warming.
QUESTION ASKED ABOUT:
Hannelore Felgentreff,
medical foot care
provider, Berlin
Herbert Danitzke, Saarlouis
My wife always has cold hands and feet.
She really suffers from this. She also has
very dry, almost brittle foot skin. What
can we do about this?
In cool temperatures, the blood vessels in
our skin constrict. The consequence: we
have cold feet and hands. This should not
be ignored, since hypothermia or even
frostbite can occur rapidly. Those who
often have cold feet should therefore keep
a foot bath which encourages circulation
handy and regularly apply a warming foot
cream. Those who simply wish to relax or
provide their feet with relief are best advised to have a warm foot bath for 10 to 15
minutes. It is important to dry the feet
thoroughly afterwards – even between the
toes. In general, the organism should be
able to handle stress for water applications. In cardiovascular disorders, you
should therefore ask your doctor first. In
venous problems and severe arterial circulation problems, warm water applications
are likewise advisable only after consulting
with your doctor. Diabetics only bathe their
feet briefly, about three minutes, and at a
water temperature of about 37 to 38
degrees Celsius.
Dry, rough skin is another “winter problem”. Heating air particularly causes our
skin to dry out. After all, air humidity is
usually very low in heated rooms. So our
skin quickly becomes brittle and scaly.
Even the low activity of the sebaceous
glands contributes to dry winter skin. Star-
ting at eight degrees Celsius, they even
stop working altogether.
The skin therefore needs appropriate care,
such as GEHWOL FUSSKRAFT BLUE.
Intensive care with sufficient fats and moisture to preserve the protective skin barrier
and prevent pathogens from entering is
provided by high quality care creams such
as GEHWOL FUSSKRAFT RED. The capsaicin from paprika which it contains also
supports the process of warming cold winter feet.
TIRED FEET AND LEGS
Movement – the magic formula
The urge to move particularly drops during the cold season. Blood flow
lessens, which can lead to tired feet and legs. As much movement as
possible and suitable high quality care products pep them up again and
boost your sense of well-being.
Long sitting or standing weakens the calf
musculature. But these muscles perform
important work, for they pump the blood
back to the heart from the lower extremities.
If this function is weakened, the blood
becomes congested in the veins, making
the legs unpleasantly heavy. The feet and
legs may feel tired. This occurs more frequently during the cold season, in which we
usually get less movement than during the
summer.
Moving care
The magic formula for affected persons is
this: exercise. This is easily included even in
everyday life. For instance, anyone can use
the classic stair steps instead of the elevator or escalator, walk to pick up some buns,
or drop off the mail on foot. So the car
should stay parked whenever possible.
Regular walks, alternating hot and cold
showers and massages are also part of the
fitness programme for tired feet.
Care agents can also provide relief for the
everyday symptoms of the civilised world.
Creams with a highly effective combination
of natural ingredients revitalise the legs and
feet. Essential oils such as mountain pine or
rosemary oil activate the metabolism and
the circulation. For instance, there is the
proven freshness formula of GEHWOL
FUSSKRAFT Leg Vitality. Extracts of ocean
algae, avocado oil, vitamin E, allantoin, the
chamomile active substance bisabolol and
hamamelis extract from the Virginia witch
hazel revitalise and simultaneously ensure
silky skin. The care agents, lightly massaged into the skin, are immediately
absorbed and unfold their soothing effects
without being greasy.
True miracles
People often suffer from tired feet and legs during the dry, cold season. A lot of movement
and intensive care brings them back to life.
ife in our civilised society has much
less movement than in earlier times.
Travel to work, shopping, leisure – we
handle most activities with modern modes
of transportation such as a car or public
transportation. This means that we don’t
L
walk long distances. In addition, many professional activities involve a lot of sitting.
The lack of movement is not always
equalised during leisure times, e.g. with
sports.
Tired legs?
Here’s what you can do:
A lot of movement is important to
activate the circulation.
n Hiking, jogging, swimming – don’t
overstrain yourself when starting a
sport.
n Pay attention to always wearing the
right shoes, regardless of what you
are doing.
n Do foot exercises when you have to sit
for long periods. Use your toes to grip
objects or roll the feet over a studded
ball in all directions. Or try to paint a
picture with your feet or write something.
n Those who work seated should also
get up every 20 minutes and walk
around the room for about half a
minute. This releases vascular cramps
and has an enlivening effect.
n Regularly nourish your feet and legs
with revitalising creams which activate
the circulation.
n Treat your feet and legs to a massage.
This also activates the circulation.
Intensify the effect by using creams
with a rich recipe.
n Alternating hot and cold showers in
the morning activate the circulation all
day.
n Daily
massages with GEHWOL
FUSSKRAFT RED keep the feet pleasantly warm. A foot bath beforehand,
e.g. using GEHWOL FUSSKRAFT
Warming Bath-Concentrate, intensifies the heat effect and provides care
for dry winter skin. This is due to the
extracts of paprika, rosemary and
skin-friendly palm heart oil to return
lipids to the skin, which are all contained in the concentrate.
n
Paralysing tiredness of the legs and feet is
also driven away by a cold foot bath. It
boosts the circulation and cardiovascular
system, and produces a wonderful sensation of warmth in the legs. The “cold shock”
helps with swollen, tired feet after a long
day at work. Cold foot baths should take
about ten seconds to two minutes.
Rich creams render the skin more resistant
– and not just in winter.
WHAT EXACTLY IS…
The conifer mountain pine
The scent of mountain pine oil
activates the respiration and circulation. It strengthens in states of
weakness and has numerous other
positive attributes.
onifers (cone bearing trees) grow in
large numbers in alpine regions and
the Mediterranean. Mountain pine,
which is in this class of plants, has a scent
substance which protects it against viruses
and bacteria. The “health-protecting” and
soothing effect of the essential oil also works
in the human organism. With its 60 components, it is more than a scent.f.
C
A strong guard against
inflammation
Some ingredients encourage the circulation,
while others activate the adrenal cortex to
produce more of the body’s own cortisone.
This mild form of stimulation of the natural
pain and inflammation defences is referred to
as a “healing stimulus” in natural medicine.
The body transports this self-formed cortisone into the regions treated with mountain
pine oil, allowing targeted therapy of problem
skin. But mountain pine is not just used
externally. Medical personnel also recommends inhalation of the essential oil, since its
expectorant and pathogen-killing effects
provide relief for colds and illnesses.
The disinfecting and deodorising properties
of the oil are particularly utilised in cosmetics. Products which contain mountain pine
oil protect against fungal colonisation of the
skin and relieve itchy skin. It generates
a pleasant, fresh scent in GEHWOL
FUSSKRAFT Caring Foot Spray. It enlivens
tired and fatigued feet, relieves burning feet
and helps to prevent unpleasant foot odour.
Mountain pine oil improves the circulation,
activates the metabolism and has a pleasantly relaxing effect on the foot skin, blood
vessels, muscles and joints. It helps to
relieve rheumatic and neuralgic complaints.
Nourishing and healing properties: the
essential oils of mountain pine.
TEUTOBURGER WALD
In
2011 sollen weitere Wege in fünf
anderen Urlaubsorten hinzukommen.
Sicher unterwegs

GEHWOL FUSSKRAFT BLUE
Blue makes it smooth
GEHWOL FUSSKRAFT BLUE is a true classic among foot care products. By
complementing the proven recipe with an active substance combination of
aloe vera, urea and glycerine, the cream provides the skin with more
moisture and binds it there.
early half of all women, but also
many persons over the age of 60
and diabetics suffer from dry feet.
This problem is intensified in winter, since
the skin receives less circulation when it’s
cold. While we then treat the hands and
body with cream particularly well, the feet
are often neglected.
N
The lack of lipids and moisture means that
foot skin becomes rough and cracked. Fungi, bacteria and viruses can penetrate the
skin more easily. Regular foot skin care
helps with these winter problems. GEHWOL
FUSSKRAFT BLUE is especially suitable for
this purpose. The classic product from the
house of Gerlach nourishes dry foot skin.
Convincing ingredients
The secret of the balm’s success lies in its
balanced recipe and valuable ingredients.
Then and now, the special ingredients
account for its value. Lanolin, the natural
wool wax from sheep, is very similar to the
lipids of human skin, so that it is very easi-
ly absorbed. It is deposited in the spaces
between the cells of the upper callus layer.
The skin is rendered pleasantly smooth. The
effective combination of moisturising aloe
vera, urea and glycerine renders dry foot
skin supple and elastic.
Essential oils of rosemary, mountain pine
and lavender activate the circulation, disinfect and deodorise. The natural pathogenkilling effects of the oils also provide protection against fungal infections, inflammation and foot odour. Enlivening camphor
and cooling menthol relieves burning and
painful feet, and prevents itching between
the toes. GEHWOL FUSSKRAFT BLUE is
dermatologically tested and also suitable
for the care of dry, sensitive diabetic skin.
A balm for the feet: GEHWOL FUSSKRAFT
BLUE cares for dry feet.

Plant aromas can flow from scent lamps,

Essential oils have many uses of this type.
They embody highly concentrated plant forces which unfold their direct effects on the
