CAMFT’s History of Heterosexism Refuses to Support Marriage & Family Equality Town Hall meetings with CAMFT leadership 2008 to 2009 End of 2009 CAMFT rejects taking stance on SOCE CAMFT’s Elections Committee makes it difficult for LGBTQ representatives to be nominated for Board positions ~ LGBTQ representatives and their Allies find communication with several CAMFT leaders challenging, if not hostile 2008 Larchmont Associates, Antioch University, Phillips Graduate Institute, Gaylesta & multiple Chapters send letters & petitions to the CAMFT Board after it continuously refuses to support marriage & family equality (all other professional organizations have) ~ CAMFT rejects multiple requests Summer of 2009 CAMFT publishes several anti-LGBTQ & anti-marriage equality articles Members express outrage and assert needs with CAMFT leadership at several Town Hall meetings ~ CTME (California Therapists for Marriage Equality) presents CAMFT with petition of over 1,000 signatures requesting LGBTQ Cultural Sensitivity ~ CAMFT finally creates statement for marriage equality but does not address other listed concerns 2010 Challenging, if not hostile communication from many CAMFT leaders 2011 to 2014 2014 CAMFT rejects proposals by SFCAMFT and members to make a statement in support of the APA 2009 Findings on Sexual Orientation Change Efforts (SOCE) ~ Anti-gay NARTH uses CAMFT’s rejection of this to legitimize their harmful and ineffective attempts at changing LGBTQ individuals to straight and cis-gendered CAMFT finally includes discrimination against clients in its Ethical Codes but refuses to make a strong and specific statement against practicing SOCE ~ CAMFT fights legislation, SB 1172, banning therapists using SOCE on minors, despite member advocacy ~ While most other professional organizations moved from opposing SB1172 to supporting it, CAMFT maintains a neutral stance
