From Our Pastor
D
ear People of St. Stephen,
This Saturday at 5 PM and Sunday
at 10 AM we welcome the members of this
year’s Confirmation class and their parents
to a rite of enrollment in which the young
people will express their commitment to
prepare to receive Confirmation next
March. The Catholic author and speaker
Matthew Kelly, in a talk on Confirmation,
challenges those preparing for the
sacrament to take their spiritual lives
seriously. With the pressures of academic,
athletic, personal, and other areas of
development that challenge young people,
developing their spiritual selves can take a
backseat. With so many pressures on
people of all ages, nurturing our spiritual
life can get pushed into the background. I
encourage our young people to nurture
their spiritual selves by growing in
knowledge of the Lord; by growing, more
importantly, in their personal relationship
with the Lord by prayer and worship; and
by developing a Catholic lifestyle. This
lifestyle has two main components. The
first is developing the habit of asking before
we make our choices and decisions in life
“what would the Lord want me to do?”
This is a way to seek to do God’s will in
every area of our lives. The second is to
develop habits of generosity, willingly
sharing our time and talent to help others.
The challenge to grow in these areas – in
our personal relationship with and our
knowledge of the Lord and in our lifestyle
as followers of Jesus – extends to all of us
at every age. Welcoming our Confirmation
class reminds us that the growth of our
spiritual selves does not end at
Confirmation; it is a life-long challenge. I
asked that everyone pray for our young
people who are preparing for Confirmation
this year. I also ask that we all renew our
commitment to take our own spiritual
growth seriously. Living as people grateful
for God’s gifts to us, valuing prayer and
worship, and seeking to live each day in the
spirit of Jesus is perhaps the best way that
we can nurture the faith of our young
people.
Respect Life month continues through
October, and on a weekend when we pray
especially for our young people preparing
for Confirmation, the Respect Life theme
makes me think of the violence in our
world that our young people encounter.
The culture of violence seen in so many
video games and in so much of the media
along with the gun violence so often
associated with the drug culture pose
challenges to our young people that I never
encountered when I was a teen (that was in
a time that current teens must consider
ancient – there were no stores open on
Sunday). Respect for Life calls us to
commit ourselves to praying and working
for an end to the violence against every
human person at all stages of life – from the
violence against the unborn to the violence
that plagues our streets to any violence that
abuses the dignity of any person. There’s
no simple solution to the challenge of
violence in our world, and the problem
often seems overwhelming to us. Yet each
of us can try to be bearers of peace in our
interactions with others, and each of us can
pray, asking God’s help for the victims of

violence in our world and for God’s
strength for our society to make a
commitment to seek a world where the
dignity of each person is respected. We can
make our world more peaceful by the small
steps that each of us can take.
Congratulations to William Koenig of our
parish who won the $500 early bird raffle
prize at the drawing last Sunday. Tickets
for the parish raffle, our major fundraiser
for the year, are available at the parish
office and will be sold in the narthex on the
weekend of November 1-2. The drawing of
raffle winners will be held at the Spaghetti
Dinner on Friday, November 7.
I invite everyone to join us for the
Spaghetti Dinner organized by our
Religious Education program and our
Confirmation class. Dinner will be served
from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM on November 7.
Tickets are $7 and include a dinner of
spaghetti and meatballs, salad, and bread
from Salinas. Wine and desserts will be
available for purchase at a small cost. Those
present will also enjoy dinner music
provided by Bill Sifuentes and Bob Page of
our parish. The dinner is an enjoyable
evening at a very reasonable price for
people of all ages. I hope to see many of
you there.
Next weekend I will be away in St.
Louis with my family to celebrate my
aunt’s 90th birthday. We are blessed to
have the chance to share this happy
occasion

World Mission Sunday
Next Sunday, World Mission Sunday,
Cardinal George reminds us that “a
commitment to mission continues to be the
first service that the Church offers to
humanity. Proclaiming Christ to the world
is the duty of every baptized person.
Through our living witness to the joy of
knowing Christ we become ambassadors to
people throughout the world.” As
Catholics we are called to share the Gospel
to the world and financially support our
missions. As a parish we will no longer
have an actual second collection for this
need, but as a parish we will send a
contribution based on previous years’
contributions. So we ask you to increase
your regular donations which become part
of our parish’s donation to the World
Mission Sunday Collection and other
eliminated second contributions. The work
of the World Missions of the Church is
important and they are grateful for our
financial help.

living in his column at his Church in Hayward Wisconsin. I appreciated his thoughts, and

day, in less than a month, we would have a better attitude and would have made a significant difference in our life and the lives of others. Let’s see how many you can do.

Parish Transformation
The Parish Transformation Team continued its discussion of the “Mission Building Blocks”
this week by focusing on Communio, Missionary Spirit, and Call to Holiness.
When we talk about Communio, we move to a deeper level of community than that which is
formed by our human efforts of hospitality and fellowship. We use the Latin word “communio” to
distinguish what we mean by this more profound union we share with and in Christ.
Being an effective missionary begins with learning to listen carefully to others in our community,
including those who are not part of our circle of engaged believers. Our task is not to impose our
spirituality on others, but to draw out the good from others by sharing the joy of our own faith.
The most important goal of every parish is to assist its people in responding to the call to holiness. Living
a holy life is being faithful to our vocation as children of God. Growing in holiness is doing the will of
God. Like the saints we have come to know and love in our Catholic tradition, we can draw closer to
God through our daily work, the care we give our families, and the sacrifices we make for others.
Please continue to pray for your Parish Transformation Team and be sure to share with us any additional
thoughts that you may have to improve our Parish.

Sacrament of the Sick
God’s Comfort and Healing in Time of Illness
This Sunday, October 19, during the 6:15 PM Mass, we will offer the Sacrament of the Sick to those who wish to receive it. The
sacrament is meant to offer Christ’s healing love to people in times of significant illness. The sacrament offers many blessings:
- the power of God’s healing grace to help the sick person to bear the illness;
- God’s strength to assist in healing;
- the forgiveness of sins if necessary; and
- the strengthening of the faith of the sick person.
This sacrament is meant for those whose health is seriously impaired by sickness or old age. It may be repeated if the sick person
recovers after being anointed and then falls ill again. A person can be anointed before any significant surgery. The elderly may be
anointed if they have become notably weakened even though no serious illness is present. The anointing is also available to those
who are judged to have a serious mental illness or disability and who would be strengthened by the sacrament.
There are two main ritual actions in the celebration of the sacrament. The first is the laying on of hands by the priest. Done in
silence, this gesture calls down the power of the Holy Spirit to strengthen the person who receives the sacrament. The second
gesture is the anointing with the oil of the sick, blessed by the Bishop of each diocese in Holy Week each year. This anointing is
given as a prayer asking for God’s help for the sick person is said. In the communal celebration of the sacrament, these actions occur
after the homily of the Mass. When we celebrate the sacrament at the 6:15 PM Mass this Sunday, we will ask those who wish to
receive the sacrament to sit in the center section in every other row to facilitate Fr. Greg and Fr. Jay’s going to each person to
administer the sacrament. Some of our Pastoral Care Ministers will be present to assist those receiving the sacrament. The
celebration of the sacrament will add only a few minutes to the time of the Mass. Fr. Greg and Fr. Jay welcome requests to
receive the sacrament at any time.

Book Discussion “Everybody Needs to Forgive Somebody”
Book discussion on the book distributed at Easter and published by Matthew Kelly’s Dynamic Catholic Organization, “Everybody Needs to
Forgive Somebody”, will begin this Sunday October 19. Like our book discussion on “Rediscover Catholicism” last winter and spring, we
will begin with a light supper at 4:30pm and conclude about 5:50pm on time for the 6:15pm Mass. Babysitting will be provided. To help

Gluten Free Hosts Available
The Benedictine Sisters, who have been
providing our altar breads since we
began as a parish, have developed a
communion host that will benefit all
those who suffer from celiac disease.
Celiac disease is a digestive disorder
triggered by gluten, a protein found in
wheat and other grains. Since Church
law and tradition requires that the
Eucharistic bread be wheat based, some
Catholics have been unable to receive
the host because they cannot tolerate
the gluten in altar breads. Some
Catholics can receive only the cup
because the gluten in the host is a
danger to their health. The Benedictine
Sisters have developed a low gluten host
that is safe for most people with celiac
disease and which meets all Church
requirements and is approved for use at
Mass. The gluten content of these
breads is 0.01%, a level which the
Center for Celiac Research at the
University of Maryland calls perfectly
safe for the vast majority of celiac
sufferers. The Sisters still recommend
that individual celiac sufferers consult
with their doctor before using the

Deacon Council St. Francis Dinner
This year's St. Francis Dinner, held on
October 12, set records in both
attendance and income generated. The
annual St. Francis Dinner is the largest
fund raiser of the Diaconate Council of
the Archdiocese of Chicago, providing
over 80% of our oper ating
income. Monies raised help provide
education grants for deacons and wives,
mutual aid grants to deacons in need,
r educe costs of symposiums,
convocations, etc. for deacons and
provide funding for Deacon Council
supported charities. I wish to thank
everyone who contributed to this year's
success thru your prayers, your purchase

5th Annual Spaghetti Dinner
Come and join us for an evening of good
food, conversation and musical
entertainment in the St. Stephen
Education Wing on Friday, Nov. 7 from
5:30pm-8:00pm. Tickets price is $7.00
(No tickets sold at the door) .We are
looking for donations of bakery items for
the dessert table at the spaghetti dinner.
If you can help us it would be most
appreciated. We are asking families with
students in grades 1-4 to also help provide
baked goods to be sold at the dinner. All
baked goods should be individually
wrapped and labeled with ingredients.
Families with students in grades 5-8 are
asked to provide canned soft drinks

Blessing of Memorial Crosses
Deacons Bill Schultz and Joe Stalcup blessed 150 memorial crosses at our parish entrances on Saturday, October 5 th. Deacon Bill
offered a beautiful prayer for all who stand up for life from conception to natural death. He prayed for all medical professionals who
nurture life in the womb, and for all innocents who have had their life taken from them. He also offered a special prayer for all
children who eagerly await the birth of a little brother or sister along with all who attended.
Diaper Drive
Respect Life Ministry will sponsor a Diaper Drive this weekend and the weekend of October 25/26 to benefit three
organizations that serve women and children in our area.
1.) PASS Network for Life in Tinley Park, phone 708 614-9777.
Services include support for women and men facing an unplanned pregnancy, pregnancy verification, referral assistance
for adoption, housing or medical needs, and baby supplies. More information at www.passhelps.org.
2.) Crisis Center for South Suburbia 24-hour Crisis Hotline number 708 429-SAFE (7233).
Services include emergency shelter, counseling, court advocacy, community education, community policing, partner
abuse intervention, dating violence prevention, and transitional housing. More information at www.crisisctr.org.
3.) Swaddle Diapers collects and distributes diapers and wipes to agencies that serve needy families living on the edge of
poverty, including Catholic Charities and Together We Cope. More information at www.swaddlediapers.org.

By zachować proporcje
Przypatrując się ludziom i ich postępowaniu, trudno nie dostrzec, że nie jest nam obca dwulicowość. I natychmiast nasuwa się
skojarzenie z człowiekiem znanym jako doktor Jekyll i pan Hyde. Nowelę napisaną przez szkockiego autora, Roberta Louisa
Stevensona, można uznać za literacki portret psychopatologii i podwójnej osobowości. Podwójną osobowość zauważyć można
nawet pośród tych, którzy mienią się katolikami – chrześcijanami.
Aby coś osiągnąć i zrealizować swoje dążenia, próbujemy różnych sposobów. Bywa, że posługujemy się innymi ludźmi, którzy
świadomie lub nieświadomie mogą nam pomóc w osiągnięciu naszych własnych zamierzeń. To pewien rodzaj manipulacji i
raczej nie najlepszy sposób postępowania. Ale przecież nam to odpowiada, w pracy i w kontaktach międzyludzkich w ciągu
tygodnia jesteśmy Hyde’ami, zaś na niedziele i święta dr Jekyll’ami. I czy chcemy tego, czy nie, nasza dwoista natura objawia
się od zarania czasów.
Jednakże mamy kogoś, kto dba o nas i zajmuje się nami, czasami wbrew naszej chęci, a czasami na naszą prośbę. To nasz
Ojciec, który tak nami kieruje, byśmy byli szczęśliwi, bezpieczni, ale również pełni miłości i wdzięczności za Jego Dzieła. Jak
pisze nam w swej prorockiej przepowiedni Izajasz; ”Ja mocno ująłem go za prawicę, aby ujarzmić przed nim narody i królom
odpiąć broń z pasa, aby otworzyć przed nim podwoje, żeby się bramy nie zatrzasnęły. Z powodu sługi mego, Jakuba, Izraela,
mojego wybrańca, nazwałem cię twoim imieniem, pełnym zaszczytu, chociaż Mnie nie znałeś, Ja jestem Pan i nie ma innego.
Poza Mną nie ma Boga.” (Iz 45,4-5). Za opiekę, za prowadzenie, za miłość okazywać powinniśmy wdzięczność.
W jaki sposób? To właśnie wyjaśnia nam fragment Listu do Tesaloniczan, w którym święty Paweł wraz ze swoimi
współpracownikami, Sylwanem i umiłowanym uczniem Tymoteuszem, poucza nas: „Zawsze dziękujemy Bogu za was
wszystkich, wspominając o was nieustannie w naszych modlitwach, pomni przed Bogiem i Ojcem naszym na wasze dzieło
wiary, na trud miłości i na wytrwałą nadzieję w Panu naszym, Jezusie Chrystusie.” (1 Tes 1,2-3). A więc modlitwa, modlitwa i raz
jeszcze modlitwa, pełna wdzięczności za Syna Bożego Jezusa Chrystusa, za Zbawienie, za Odkupienie, za Słowo i za Ducha
Świętego. To przez Niego mamy wiedzę zbawczą, mamy świadomość życia wiecznego.
Ewangeliczna scena przedstawiająca przewrotność faryzeuszy ukazuje nam tę drugą stronę naszej natury. Zadając pytanie, z
góry wiemy jaka padnie odpowiedź, wiemy, że każda odpowiedź, twierdząca czy przecząca, będzie powodem do odwrotu, do
ośmieszenia, do usprawiedliwienia własnego sumienia. Ale nie w przypadku opowieści ewangelicznej. Faryzeusze nie uznawali
wyższości Boga nad Cezarem, gdyż według nich Cezar miał władzę absolutną. Odmowę płacenia podatków traktowali jako
bunt przeciwko ustanowionej władzy. Jezus, mając naturę Bosko-ludzką, nie dał się wciągnąć w intrygę polityczną. Jego
odpowiedź jest jasna: „Oddajcie Cezarowi, co należy do Cezara, a Bogu to, co należy do Boga” (Mt 22,21).
Jakie zadanie stawia przed nami dzisiejsza Ewangelia? Musimy usilniej pracować nad sobą, by zdobyć umiejętność
rozróżniania pomiędzy tym, co światowe, a tym, co Boskie. Nie jest to łatwe, ale dopiero po zdobyciu tej umiejętności będziemy
mogli mówić o wewnętrznej wolności, z której wypływa całkowite oddanie się Bogu i bycie niezależnym od tego, co materialne.
Wyzbądźmy się schizofrenii religijnej, nie bądźmy doktorem Jekyll’em i panem Hyde’m w jednej osobie. Bądźmy dziećmi
jednego Boga
KRÓLOWO RÓŻAŃCA ŚWIĘTEGO, prosimy, pomóż nam otworzyć serca i rozum na Światło Ducha Świętego, abyśmy umieli
oddać Bogu, co Boskie, i stać się niezależnymi od tego, co materialne.
