2014 Annual Report - Trinity Health Foundation
In Our Hands Trinity Health has been intertwined with the medical quality of life in northwestern North Dakota since 1922, when Lutheran pastors from across the Northwest Territory gathered in Minot to sketch out plans for a hospital. Guided by our mission over the past 90 years to create healthier communities, Trinity Health has become a leader in healthcare within North Dakota. Commitment to excellence – and to healing mind, body and spirit – resonates throughout all Trinity Health’s hospitals, outpatient centers, medical clinics and other care settings. The year 2013 will be remembered as the year of meaningful impact, lasting change and strategic foresight. Our organization is well-positioned to ensure children have what they need to grow, individuals have what they need to lead healthy lives and neighborhoods have exceptional healthcare to help build strong communities. One highlight of programmatic innovation is our partnership with the Mayo Clinic Care Network. The Mayo Clinic Care Network is a unique collaboration that connects Trinity Health physicians with Mayo Clinic specialists and Mayo Clinic resources. Collaborating with other medical providers to provide the best possible care for patients has always been part of Mayo Clinic’s culture. The Mayo Clinic Care Network is intended to help Mayo and community care organizations work closer together — in new ways — to enhance the lives of patients. We are focused on providing the right care, at the right time and in the right place, with increased operational efficiency. Trinity Health’s enduring mission is our roadmap. Although we cannot predict the future, we are confident our organization will continue to be bold and innovative, engaged committed and passionate leaders and always be prepared for opportunities to advance health care. As we approach 100 years, we are proud of the legacy our foundation is built upon, and know that what we are doing today will support generations in the future. Sincerely, John M. Kutch President / CEO Owning our History, Shaping Our Future Preservation of our history enriches the community by maintaining tangible connections to our past, as well as promoting economic development and excellent healthcare resources. Trinity Health’s history is in our hands. By uniting, we can bring the heart of Trinity Health into the ownership of those who care for it most of all - - the supporters. The Trinity Health Foundation is deeply rooted in North Dakota. A fascinating history has brought us to where we are today and moves us toward an exciting future. Throughout our community’s history, healthcare has been a cornerstone to the community’s vitality. The Trinity Health Foundation traces its history to a time when Ward County had two hospitals - - Trinity Hospital (opened in 1922) and St. Joseph’s Community Hospital (opened in 1914). On May 3, 2001, Trinity Health consolidated the hospitals and created a system of care focused on the holistic needs of the patient’s body, mind and spirit. For the past 13 years, Trinity Health has continued to provide high-quality, comprehensive healthcare to the growing community. Building on our rich tradition of excellence, and looking to the future care for our community, the Trinity Health Foundation believes in sustaining an ongoing influence through improving the health, wellness and quality of life of our community. The Trinity Health Foundation prospers through the continued efforts of community individuals supporting our work. Trinity Health was built by the community, for the community. We continue to set our priorities based on community needs and expectation for world-class care. During the last fiscal year, ending on June 30, 2013, more than 3,000 donors made gifts to the Trinity Health Foundation; amounting to almost $1 million. Numerous volunteers served countless hours on boards and committees, at events and serving patients in Trinity Health facilities. Our dedicated community members and supporters ensure that Trinity Health is at the forefront of health care and continues as one of the top care systems in the Midwest. Sincerely, Jodi Smith MNM, MNT – Foundation Director 2 3 Donating to Our Community One of the keys to a happy, healthy community is engagement in the community by its residents. I’ve lived in Minot for over thirty years, and choose to continue living here. I live here because it’s a great community. I hope that I have pulled my weight as a citizen of Minot by being engaged in various organizations, working hard at my profession and supporting public and private organizations in a variety of ways. Companies often choose high-profile celebrities or sports stars to represent their products and promote services. Celebrities and sports heroes are not who represent Trinity Health. Our ambassadors are our employees. Our staff is our greatest asset – we say this often in the Foundation and with good reason. It is only with determination and dedication of our employees that we can serve patients, generate long-term value for our community and satisfy the medical needs in the broader region. Our efforts focus on cultivating and sustaining a diverse work environment critical to meeting the unique needs of our patients and the distinct communities in which we operate. The goal of Trinity Health is to maximize individual potential, increase effectiveness, reinforce Trinity’s culture, expand our employee’s professional opportunities and help them contribute positively to their individual communities. Trinity Health is tremendously important to our community. It employs more people than any other business in Minot, providing competitive wages and generous benefits. It is our only hospital. Without it, we would travel a minimum of 100 miles to the next comprehensive facility. Trinity is a nonprofit hospital, which means if the hospital’s revenues would exceed its expenses, the leftover goes back into the facility right here in our community. This is in contrast with for-profit hospitals, which have investors who expect a financial return on their investment. This also means that Trinity Health is on its own to survive and thrive on what we have in our community. I donate to the Trinity Health Foundation because I can’t imagine our community without a hospital and I want our community hospital to be a good one. I am a member of the Medical Staff at Trinity, and I appreciate the facility, the resources and the wonderful staff we have at the hospital and at the nursing home. However, every day I see areas that could use more resources, so that we can serve the community even better. That all takes donations of time, talent and money. I can’t pass that need off to the next person—I feel that I should do my part. There are many opportunities to contribute to our community. Our local healthcare should be a top priority. Giving memorials in honor of someone special, giving to special fundraising efforts for specific health system units or pieces of equipment and now giving in anticipation of a whole new hospital facility are all worthy endeavors. I give because I want ours to be a health system of which we can be proud and where we are comfortable having our loved ones cared for. That is what makes a great community. Kim Krohn MD, MPH, FAAFP University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Science Minot Center for Family Medicine Program Director Not only are our employees living representatives of Trinity Health, they differentiate us from other healthcare organizations. Our employees are The Faces of Trinity. In this year’s Annual Report we highlight our employees; from the physicians and nurses who provide direct patient care, to the staff who provides the very best support possible to all those who come to us for help. 4 5 2O13 Giving Addiction Program Jim Grote Adolescent Mental Health Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church Alzheimer Program Richard & Diane Olthoff Sharon Rollman Auxiliary/Southridge First International Bank & Trust Lando & June Vix Sharon Tranby Birth Center/OB Unit Avonne Gessner Barb Nolden Concordia Lutheran Church DeAnna Johnson Jana Stenson Linda Schaefer MDU Resources Foundation Teeny Tears Breast Cancer Bruce & Cynthia Carlson Verendrye Electric Cooperative Camp Discovery Clara Ann Thompson Melissa Anderson CancerCare Exercise Rehab Action Realtors Inc. AN INVESTMENT IN THE FUTURE ENCOURAGING DONATIONS Like all gifts to Trinity Health, endowed gifts contribute to the high quality of healthcare, education and outreach. Endowments are particularly powerful because they deliver a dependable, perpetual source of funding. Establishing an endowment or helping to grow one that is already in existence is an investment in the future-an investment that makes a real difference in the lives of our patients, healthcare staff and medical students by enhancing our facilities, technology, education, research and overall excellence. Barely a handful of states offer charitable tax credits of any kind, and only one other state offers credits similar to what North Dakota now offers. This tax credit makes it possible for individuals and financial institutions to give more, and through their contributions, have a greater impact on the state’s quality of life. WHAT IS AN ENDOWMENT? The Trinity Health Foundation’s endowments are composed of 20 restricted funds established by donors for specific purposes, such as nursing scholarships, cancer care and pastoral care. Each year, a percentage of the endowment’s 12-month rolling average is distributed to benefit the healthcare system. Considered a measure of an institution’s long-term strength, endowments are essential if we are to remain leaders in healthcare. An endowed fund can also be established through an estate or planned gift and is a great way to link your legacy with Trinity Health’s future. WHY SHOULD I MAKE AN ENDOWED GIFT? The Trinity Health Foundation’s endowment market value has doubled since 1997. However, it remains significantly lower than endowments of institutions with which Trinity Health most often competes for charitable giving. Closing this gap will bolster our ability to hire and retain the best, most talented and diverse staff. Endowed contributions, from patients, staff, corporations and foundations, will help Trinity Health realize the healthcare ambitions that citizens and industries expect from their regional healthcare leader. 14 BUSINESSES AND FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS Businesses and financial institutions that make gifts to qualified endowments may qualify for a state income tax credit, which amounts to 40% of the value of the gift, up to a maximum credit of $10,000 per year. INDIVIDUALS Planned gifts by individuals qualify for an income tax credit of 40% for gifts up to a maximum credit of $10,000 per person, $20,000 for a married couple with any excess unused credit to carry forward 3 years. An individual may receive a 40% tax credit for contributions of $5,000 or more (lump sum or aggregate in one year) to a qualified North Dakota endowment. If a donor is in the 35% federal tax bracket, the tax benefit may look like this: Gift amount: Federal tax deduction: $5,000 $50,000 Several years ago, Ruth’s father passed away, leaving an oil well to her family. The Gould’s made the decision to use the proceeds to help others by contributing to the Trinity Health School of Nursing Endowment. The Gould family has given Trinity Health a gift that will support nursing students and give on in perpetuity. “I don’t need the money really,” Gould said. “My husband is a chartered accountant, and has provided for us for 54 years. I’d rather use the money to help other people.” “We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.” – Sir Winston Churchill What Endowments Do We Have? • Cancer Care Endowment (Cancer Care Funding) • Clarence M. Kringlee Endowment (Nursing Student Scholarship) • C larence & Pearl Anderson (Support for Trinity) -$1,750 N.D. state income tax credit: -$2,000 Net cost: $25,000 For the past 64 years, Ruth Mickelsen Gould has had a soft spot for Trinity Health. In 1952, Ruth graduated from the Trinity Hospital School of Nursing and began her journey providing care overseas. It was in Iraq where she met her husband, David Gould, and began a new chapter in her life providing healthcare and missionary work throughout third-world countries.
