‘Accidental

‘T

Husband’ is a hilarious
romantic movie, which
I accidentally stumbled on
while browsing through the
video clips of another movie.
It’s all about a radio talk show
host played by Umma Thurman
who happens to mess with the
wrong guy.

April Fools’

Fools’
Day is
easily the best
day of the year
for pranksters,
when optimum
disturbance can
be caused at only a fraction of the
getting-in-trouble price. Few hours
of the day people are fooled around
(especially in schools). Here is a
list of the best April Fools’ Day
pranks. By the way, your socks are
untied. April Fools!

he Trinity College Choir
will perform “The Cross of
Christ”, a service of choral
music, at the Trinity College
Chapel, Kandy, on Sunday, 28
March at 6.00 pm. A highlight of
the performance will be the magnificent and awe- inspiring
Halleluiah Chorus from Handle’s
Messiah.
This Easter programme of
music has been held over many
years and has now become a traditional event. Conducted to commemorate the greatest event in
the Christian world, the sacrifice
of Jesus Christ on the Cross at
Calvary and his glorious resurrection at Easter, many confess to
being moved to worship by the
beauty and purity of the choral
singing.

development of the Choir is has
been recorded with many performances. Over the past few
years,
performances
have
improved tremendously under
the direction of enthusiastic
choir master Mr. Lasantha
Tennekoon, guided by Rev.Fr.
Jayanath
Panditharathne,
Master In charge. The choir is
assisted by Organists Mrs.
Sadhana Madasekara and Dr.
Suresh De Mel, The absence of
the late. Mr. B Alexander is still
keenly felt and his contribution
as Organist of the Trinity
College Choir for 45
years, is recalled with great
love. Mr. Alexander was an
accomplished musician and
played the piano, organ, cello,
and guitar by memorising the
music notes written in Braille.
The Choir Leader this year is
Master Dilukshan Srinivasagam
and the Choristers greatly appreciate his leadership.
Trinity College Chapel cele-
brates 75 years
This year celebrates the 75th
year of dedication of Trinity
College’s famed Chapel of 50 pillars. Christened Holy Trinity
Church, the Chapel is one of the
finest examples of Kandyan
architecture. Its open air concept, fine stone carvings and elegant paintings by artist David
Paynter, considered exquisite
masterpieces, mark the Chapel
as being one of the best known
edifices in the country
Trinity College, Kandy, was
founded
by
the
Church
Missionary Society (CMS), which
brought with it the great traditions of English Church Music
and the concept of an organised
choir whose existence depended
on discipline and commitment.
Bad fat linked to infertility condition
W
omen who eat a diet
high in biscuits, cakes
and pies that contain
trans fats are more likely to
develop a common womb condition that can cause infertility,
researchers have said.
A study found that women
with the highest consumption of
trans fats were 48 per cent more
likely to develop endometriosis
than those with the lowest consumption.
However eating a diet rich in
omega-3 fatty acids, found in oily
fish, seemed to protect against
the disease as these women had
a 22 per cent reduced risk of the
condition.
Endometriosis
affects
around one in ten women and is
when the lining of the womb
grows in the wrong places. It can
cause no symptoms at all or
severe pain and in some cases
infertility.
The study involving over
70,000 women in America, is the
largest to look at the link
between diet and endometriosis.
Previous research found that
eating four grams of trans fat a
day can lead to infertility in
women.
In the most recent study, published in the journal Human
Reproduction, it was thought
that trans fat increase inflammation in the body encouraging
rogue cells from the womb lining
to grow while omega-3 fatty
acids constricted their growth.
Lead author Dr. Stacey
Missmer, an assistant professor
of obstetrics, gynaecology and
reproductive biology at Brigham
and Women’s Hospital and
Harvard Medical School in
Boston, America, said: “This
study gives us a strong indication that we’re on the right track
in identifying food rich in
Omega-3 oils as protective for
endometriosis and trans fats as
detrimental.”
Women in the study filled out
food questionnaires every four
years between 1989 and 2001 and
traced the numbers who went on
to develop endometriosis.
The results showed that
while total fat in the diet was not
important, the kind of fat
women were consuming was
linked to the risk of endometriosis.
Trans fats are liquid oils that
have been turned into solids by a
process called hydrogenation
and are in thousands of pre-prepared foods to give texture and a
long shelf life.
The fat has also been linked
to an increased risk of heart disease.
