BEER TASTING BASICS
The HARVEST MOON BREW FEST is the perfect opportunity to sample more than 50
different homebrews, craft beers and ciders from great brewers both local and regional.
Make the most of it by taking the time to savor the flavor. With every beer you taste, follow
this simple three step process: SMELL, SEE & SAMPLE.
SMELL – Don’t be shy. Stick your nose deep in the glass and take a big whiff. Breath in the
bright earth, spice and citrus of the hops. Let the cereal smells of malted grains overtake
your senses. Yeast also brings smells: fruit, spice, sulfur, sour and funk.
SEE – Hold your glass up to the light. Take note of each beer’s jewel-like color and pristine
clarity (or the stylistic lack thereof). Brewers take great pains to raise that frothy head. Give
them back a moment of your time to admire its texture, color and duration.
SAMPLE – Finally, you taste the beer. The sensation is so much sweeter for having
indulged in the first two steps. Let the sample sit a moment on your tongue. Is it a malty beer
or do the hops hold sway? Perhaps it’s yeast that takes the day. And is that a subtle hint of
spice that lurks in the background?

CASTLE DANGER BREWERY
We have been brewing dangerously good ales on the North Shore of Lake
Superior since 2011. After out-growing our 3-bbl brewhouse in Castle Danger,
we opened a new location in downtown Two Harbors, MN with a much larger
brewing system, allowing us to brew enough beer to expand further into
Minnesota and add a canning line. We distribute our beer in Minnesota to bars &
restaurants to enjoy by the glass and to liquor stores to buy canned beer. Our
taproom is open year-round, with a fantastic patio overlooking Lake Superior.
RED HOP RISING ALE (VIP ONLY)
A hoppy red ale brewed when the fall air starts setting in. It is red hued like the
sun rising on Lake Superior. Red Hop Rising is a malty, rich, full-bodied ale
balanced by Citra, Mosaic and Simcoe hops. ABV 6.9%
CASTLE CREAM ALE
Castle Cream is our version of a cream ale. Deep gold in color, it has a soft
malty aroma, slightly sweet creamy texture with a balanced bitterness, while
finishing smooth and clean.
ABV 5.3%
DANGER ALE
Solid caramel-bready American Strong Ale / North Shore Ale with a malt
backbone balanced by German Noble hops, fruity/cedar-like esters from the
yeast and smooth finish rounds this beer out nicely. ABV 6.5%
17-7 PALE ALE
17-7 was born out of necessity while brewing on our original 93-gallon system in
Castle Danger. We love hops and IPAs, but brewing an India Pale Ale takes
several extra days for adding more hops so we created our pale ale recipe to
keep up with demand. 17-7 is a hop-forward pale ale brewed with our own 7 hop
variety and has enough of a biscuit-malt backbone to keep it honest.
ABV 5.8%
ODE IPA
This beer shows how we like to use hops where flavor and aroma are at the
forefront, ending with medium bitterness. Citra, Azacca, Amarillo and Centennial
hops lend bright citrus and tropical fruit in flavor and aroma.
ABV 7.0%

MANLEY’S WEE HEAVY SCOTISH ALE (VIP ONLY)
A big, malty strong ale with very mild hop bitterness. Rich brown in color with
moderate head.
ABV: 8.6% | IBU 27
GOLDEN SPIKE IPA
Our Golden Spike, commemorating the completion of Roundhouse Brewery, is a
golden colored Imperial IPA, loaded with premium brewers and dark crystal malts,
generous doses of Mosaic and Cascade hops for aromas of citrus, spice,
blueberry, and Magnum hops for a clean bittering finish.
ABV 8.9% | IBU 87 | SRM 10
ANGEL SEAT AMBER ALE
The “angel seat” on a train is the raised observation seat up in the cupola of the
caboose. From the angel's seat, a conductor could watch the train, looking for hot
boxes (overheated wheel bearings) or fires started by hot cinders flying out of the
locomotive. Smooth, malty flavor and aroma, with a crisp, clean hoppy finish.
ABV 5.7% | IBU 40 | SRM 15
COAL TRAIN PORTER
Think of sooty dark cars loaded with coal, moving through the night, dancing to
the music of the rails. A robust porter, dark as night and smooth as jazz. Flavors
of roast malt, coffee and cacao, with a mild caramel sweetness for balance.
ABV 5.6% | IBU 40 | SRM 28
ZUG OKTOBERFEST LAGER
Zug (pronounced "tzoog") is German for "train". A lager with a rich malty flavor
and aroma, with a mild hop finish. It has a coppery red color and a medium body.

Hammerschlagen at Harvest Moon Brew Fest
For festival guests looking to partake in a game of skill and intense competition,
the Harvest Moon Brew Fest has added Hammerschlagen to its menu of fun.
The goal for Hammerschlagen is to drive a nail into a cross-section of wood
before your opponent. Of German origins, the game dates back to the first
Oktoberfest, which took place in 1810. Good Will Donation to play benefitting
Sylvia's Children.

JACK PINE BREWERY
CUYUNA BREWING COMPANY
Jack Pine Brewery was founded in 2012 to bring fresh, locally brewed beer to the Brainerd
Lakes area. After years of fine-tuning recipes at home, award-winning homebrewer and
National ranked BJCP beer judge Patrick Sundberg decided to bring his passion for good
beer to the public. This small startup brewery is making 100 gallons at a time on College
Drive in Baxter, MN. The brewery has a taproom where pints and tasters of the latest
brewery creations can be had. The brewery also sells ½ gallon refillable growlers to-go
during taproom hours (check the brewery website for times). Jack Pine’s beers are available
in the taproom and at select tap accounts in the Brainerd Lakes Area.
It’s not just about the beer. It’s about the people, the camaraderie, the
community. It’s about sipping a beer steeped in Cuyuna’s industrial roots. It’s
about embracing our world-renowned red dirt trails and deep-blue, crystal-clear
mine lakes. It’s about creating something bigger than all of us. We look forward
to bringing this “can do” community together through our beer and this brewery.
At Cuyuna Brewing Company we have two goals: quality and experience. We
promise to relentlessly pursue these goals, ensuring that every person walking
through our door has the best quality beer in their hands and enjoys it in an
authentic Cuyuna experience. Not only do we want our patrons to enjoy the
beer, we want them to learn more, and love more, about this place we call
Cuyuna.
FENCELINE PALE ALE
A hopped-up American Pale Ale. By pushing nearly all the hop additions to the end of the
boil and dosing the beer with even more hops in the fermenter (a technique called “dry
hopping”), this mild-mannered pale ale (5.4% ABV) is bursting with hop character. A blend
of Chinook and Columbus hops meld well to provide bright hoppy notes with an interesting
array of citrus in both the flavor and aroma. ABV 5.4%
DUCK POND NUT BROWN ALE
Subtly complex with various roasted barley malts lend a wide spectrum to this beer ranging
from lighter notes of bready, toasty, and nutty to deeper characters such as prune, raisin,
chocolate, and coffee. All of these flavors and aromas are wrapped up in a moderate
gravity brown ale with a clean finish that leaves you searching for another pint. ABV 4.4%
DEAD BRANCH CREAM ALE
an approachable yet satisfying Cream Ale. This style pre-dates prohibition and was
developed by ale breweries in response to the popular American Pilsner. Traditional
ingredients such as 6-row barley, corn, and Saaz hops, impart a smooth grainy flavor, a
fresh aroma of sweet corn, and a subtle floral spiciness in a full-flavored and well-rounded
ale. ABV 6.4%
JACKTOBER OKTOBERFEST-STYLE ALE
Jack Pine’s twist on an Oktoberfest style beer. All the bready, toasty, malt smoothness of
your favorite fest beer with the soft, well-rounded, character that can only be achieved by
the warmer fermentation of an ale yeast. ABV 5.8%

MANHIGH STOUT (VIP ONLY)
Named after “Project Manhigh” the precursor to what would eventually become
NASA. The Manhigh balloon and capsule were launched out of the Portsmouth
Mine in Crosby. This dark and drinkable stout is a tribute to those space
pioneers.
ABV 5.25% | IBU 14 | SRM 35
SILVER DOLLAR LAGER
Silver Dollar is named for the famous country bar in Trommald during Cuyuna’s
industrial heyday. This festbier is highly drinkable and smooth but be careful, the
high alcohol content might sneak up on you.
ABV 7.3% | IBU 32 | SRM 7
RANGER STRONG ESB
As we created a name for our Extra Strong Bitter (ESB), Ranger Strong was an
undeniable match for its characteristics that embody not only our beer, but our
people. Woodsy, a bit nutty, complex, high in mineral content and smooth.

SCHELL’S BREWING COMPANY
SURLY BREWING COMPANY
The August Schell Brewing Company is a brewing company in New Ulm,
Minnesota. It was founded by German immigrant August Schell in 1860. It is the
second oldest family-owned brewery in America (after D. G. Yuengling & Son)
and became the oldest and largest brewery in Minnesota when the company
bought the Grain Belt rights in 2002. In September 2010, it celebrated its 150th
Anniversary with a two-day festival. Every year Schell's also celebrates traditional
German holidays with 35th Annual Oktoberfest (October 7-8 & 14-15, 2016) and
Bock Fest (March 4, 2017).
Starting with a homebrewing kit in Omar Ansari’s garage. Omar converted his
family’s business into a brewery in 2004 after convincing Todd Haug to be
Surly's head brewer. Surly Brewing Co. brews award-winning beers with a Surly
attitude in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota. Since selling our first keg in 2006,
we’ve been named the Best Brewery in America by BeerAdvocate, had our
beers pinned to the top of RateBeer’s Best lists, and grew a devoted fan base,
Surly Nation, who helped us change a Prohibition-era Minnesota state law so
that we could build a Destination Brewery where we could sell pints of our own
beer, right where it’s brewed. Now that we’ve completed construction of our new
brewery, Surly MSP, we’re sending beer beyond Minnesota.
SCHELL’S OKTOBERFEST (VIP ONLY)
A Marzen-Style Oktoberfest beer. Brewed with the perfect balance of Pale,
Munich, and Cara Pils malt with Liberty and Perle hops to create a rich, smooth
taste.
ABV 5.5%

BIG AXE BREWING COMPANY
SOCIABLE CIDER WERKS
Big Axe Brewing is downtown Nisswa’s very own small batch craft brewery and
taproom. Featuring a large variety of custom ales and fresh made sodas.
MSP’s only cider house brews with fresh Midwest apples, hops, grains, fruits
and spices to offer a Decidedly Different and Delightfully Sociable take on cider.
Driven by a pretty simple vision. Cider should be much more than the lightlyalcoholic, made-from-concentrate, sweet apple juice boxes that currently
dominate the shelf space. Sociable ciders are well carbonated, dry and always
made from real apples. Simply put, they should be enjoyed like great draught
beer. Sociable is not just hard cider, we're much more.
SAISON ALE (VIP ONLY)
Belgian Farmhouse Saison Ale fermented at higher temperatures with aromas of
clove and banana with a dry finish. Aged in a Marquette wine barrel.
ABV 5.7% | IBU 23
MOSAIC PALE ALE
Light bodied and delicious single hop pale ale. It comes in at 53 IBU, but its
bitterness isn't overpowering. With a light malt backbone consisting of pilsner and
2-row malts, the Hops really takes center stage in this beer. This beer is packed
full of flavor and aroma, containing hints of grapefruit and tropical fruit aromas
with a subtle touch of onion.
ABV 6.7% | IBU 53
OKTOBERFEST
The Oktoberfest is about the malt. Made with rich, flavorful Vienna and Munich
malts as well as a touch of crystal and aromatic. It imparts a rich malty, biscuity
flavor accentuated by a slightly dry finish and just enough bitterness to balance
the malt.
ABV 6.0% | IBU 20
STONEHOUSE COFFEE STOUT
We've taken our stout and infused it with rich, fresh dark roast coffee from the
best coffee roaster in Minnesota - StoneHouse Coffee in Nisswa, MN. The flavors
