Tri-County Middle School Battle of the Books 2013
Fourteen teams of 5th-8th grade students competed in this year’s Battle of the Books program. All team
members began reading the same 10 selected books in November, with titles ranging from fantasy to historical fiction, from animal and sports stories to mystery fiction. In March, teams competed in 12 playoff
battles, with the final battle being held in the lecture hall on March 18th. Battle questions focused on plots,
characters, settings, and quotes from the 10 titles, and took the form of, “In which book...?”, with points being awarded for correct title and author answers. Love, Peace, Read and The Word Warriors teams competed in our final battle, with The Word Warriors being declared this year’s Battle of the Books winner.
Team members from all 14 participating teams were called to the stage and recognized for their commitment and hard work.

THE NED SHOW was Here!
On March 5th, Tri-County grades K-6 had "The Ned Show" come to
our school district. "The Ned Show" presenter taught us a great lesson regarding character. NED stands for N-never give up, Eencourage others, and D-do your best. Presenter Todd also incorporated many yo-yo tricks and fun toys into the show. Just look at
Rebecca's new hat!
Mr. T.J. Kennedy, vice president of Heartland Farms Inc., visited the Tri-County
4th graders on Thursday, March 28th. He presented a Power Point from the farm
on the potato growing process and potato chip production. At the end of the presentation, he gave each of the 4th graders a bag of potato chips, a tape measure,
and a Heartland Farms "Farming for the Future" mini football. We appreciate
Mr. Kennedy taking time away from the farm to share his expertise with our students! Pictured with Mr. Kennedy are children of farm employees: Lily

EARLY CHILDHOOD NEWS from Mrs. Laspa
The Early Childhood Program is a program for children 3-5 years of age who have an identified
need which requires individualized instruction. This program provides children with meaningful concrete hands-on experiences which are fundamental to the way a young child learns. The Early
Childhood Class has been busy making projects and learning new songs. We are also learning new
games when we go into the gym and enjoying stories in the library.
News From 4 Year Old Kindergarten
It’s April already! How did that happen so quickly? The 4K has had a very busy school year so
far. We have learned many new skills, including following the school routine and making new friends.
The children enjoy exploring the learning centers in our rooms as well as making projects and singing
songs. We are also having great fun in the library and the gym.
We have enjoyed lots of exciting activities this year including Family Fun Nights and joining
the Holiday Program. This spring we will be watching caterpillars change into butterflies and taking a
field trip to the school forest. In May, we will celebrate with a 4K graduation ceremony.
Our year is moving right along!

Family Reading Night

On March 14th, my friends and I were allowed the privilege of reading to the young children of Tri-County. It was Family Reading Night, a
night full of fun activities including a visit from Curious George, cinnamon rolls and French toast for supper, a chance to create bookmarks,
viewing book trailers made by middle school students, listening to children’s books by guest readers and much more. Over 250 students and
family members participated in the fun!
Makayla Beggs and I read in Mrs. George’s room. We had a lot of fun reading to the little kids! We took pictures for the rest of the night.
Some families were playing Simon Says with Curious George while others participated in the literacy activities. Soon after, we looked in other
rooms. There were many people reading books such as Mr. Marti, Mrs. Krummel, Mrs. Jenson, Mrs. Dill, Mrs. Nelson, Mrs. Sigourney, Briana
Dickinson, Megan Nigh, Sheriff Peterson, Mr. Marinack, Mr. Weir (with Professor White) and many more.

The Tri-County Area School HS Band recently performed at a Milwaukee Bucks game. They played for nearly 20 minutes as the Bucks fans entered the Bradley Center in downtown Milwaukee, March 17th. This completes a Fantastic
Season of Pep Band performance for the TCAS Band, which has included 24 events. This schedule has been a combination of Football, Volleyball, Boys and Girls basketball, UW-SP Men's and Women's basketball and now even a professional contest.
Our next concert is April 23rd, at 7 PM. this concert will include all band members grades
6-12. We hope you can make it!

participating in our contest each year, and this was our largest group ever!

Our High School students completed their solo and ensemble contest on February 23rd, in Almond, WI. The French Horn Choir,
Trumpet Choir, Flute Choir, Clarinet Choir, Percussion Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble were outstanding. Because of their outstanding efforts and musicianship a few will perform at our April 23rd concert. This photo of our horn section is from a rehearsal

Class "A" soloists included; State Bound- Austin Heise. With Abby Van Haren on Clarinet, Ashley Taylor on Flute, Cody Eisner
on Tenor Sax and Brayden Cummings on Trumpet doing very well. Our Middle School contest was held, "in house" on March
15th. Mrs. Murray judged our 55 events and these are a few pictures from that event; Hannah Perez-Flute-soloist,

Did you see all that Irish Green?
…. Then you must have been in the High School on March 13th! The
Student Council sponsored a Green Out day to celebrate St. Patrick’s
Day and featured prizes for our most creative, crazy, and fun use of
green. Winners included Samantha Conley, Maddie Sherman, and
Sarah Lauer for their awesome combinations of green!

We’re State Bound!
That’s right! This year we have 5 students heading
to the State Forensics competition April 19th!
Dejonna Bates and Jesse Hansen have entries in
the Farrago category. Emily Bacon has a Moments
in History entry, and Shannon Heath and Cody
Lockhart will be performing their Play Acting entry. For some students this is their first State competition experience, while others have repeated
their success from previous years. Our whole Forensics team worked very hard this year at the Sub
-District and District Level with these 5 students
advancing on to State. If you see them make sure
to say “Congrats and best of luck!”

Anyone call for a Life Saver? ... and we don’t mean the candy…
As much as we love Life Savers the candy, we are really thinking about the blood
donors pictured above. These students and community members participated in our Spring Blood Drive.
The Blood Center of Central Wisconsin working with our High School Student Council held the blood
drive March 7th and we are happy to report that we had 39 donors! These donors gave 23 whole blood
units, 5 dual red products and 2 double platelets in total. Thank you to our community members and students who donated, your donations save lives right here in central Wisconsin!

Janelle Newby is a 12th grader. Mr. Mesyk said that Janelle is always friendly
and willing to engage others in diverse
topics. I’ve enjoyed working with her in
both Algebra and Geometry. She is maturing into an exceptional young lady.
Aaron Leistra is a 12th grader. Mr.
Sherman said that Aaron is a quality
student. His work is on time and done
correctly. Aaron is quiet in class but has
a sense of humor and is a friend to all.
Quincy Pfaff, a tenth grader, has
done a great job this year in both
Quiz Bowl and math League according to Mr. Mesyk. He is currently in 6th place out of 71 in the
UWSP Math League competition.
He is very dependable and capable
of even greater achievements. Mr.
Sherman said that Quincy is a bright
student who leads his class by example. He is prepared for class, turns in
quality work, and is polite and respectful.
Thomas Sachs, a tenth grader, has
shown great improvement from
last year to this year according to
math teacher Mr. Mesyk. He has
taken much more responsibility for
himself and his grades. Thomas
has a positive outlook on life and is
an enjoyable individual to be
around.

Mr. Mesyk said that Kyle Black,
an 11th grader, has been a positive
influence in my Impact period this
school year. He acts responsibly
and does his best to get along with
everyone. He brings a fresh perspective from his varied life experiences.
Ms. Stillman said that Cody
Walter, an 11th grader, is an
exceptional student. She always
turns her work in on time and
goes above and beyond what is
expected of her. Cody is a true
joy to have in class and will
succeed in all that she does.
9th grader, Dakota Lockhart, is a hard working student who is extremely enjoyable to
have in class. Ms. Stillman, Ag teacher,
said that he completes all of his work on
time and puts forth 110% effort. Not only
does he work hard in the class but also outside of class in his extracurricular activities.
Mr. Mesyk said that Dakota has steadily
improved in Algebra as this year has progressed. He asks good questions, makes
insightful comments and is an overall positive influence in the classroom. Mrs.
Mitchell, choir teacher, said that Dakota is
always pleasant and good mannered.
Mr. Raboin said that Melinda
Anderson, a 9th grader, has been a
good student in science all year.
She works well independently and
with others. She has maintained
strong grades and has been an asset
to our class.

Help Tri-County Earn a Chance at a $10,000 Grant
We know nothing is more important than the next generation, and Tri-County is always looking for new opportunities
to go above and beyond for our children. In order to continue to give our students the best education, we are asking
for your help. We are asking all parents and school staff to ask local farmers to nominate our district for the opportunity to compete for a $10,000 grant through America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education℠.
America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, gives eligible farmers the opportunity to
grow the next generation by nominating a rural public school district in their community to compete for a grant to enhance education in the areas of science and math. The Monsanto Fund will award 194 grants this year across the
United States. More than $2.3 million will be donated to rural school districts across 39 states, and at least nine
$10,000 grants will be awarded in Wisconsin.
This is where we need your help. We would like to apply for a $10,000 grant, and we plan to use the money for technology equipment to enhance our curriculum in the areas of math and science. Our school district could be one of the
winners, but we need your help to be. So, please get out in the community and talk to local farmers about nominating
our school district for this unique opportunity.
Grants will be awarded based on merit, need and community support. The more farmers to nominate our school district, the more it demonstrates community support and strengthens our application. Tell your family, friends and
neighbors to spread the word. Promotional materials, such as flyers and newsletters, are
available for your use at GrowRuralEducation.com. You can also help get the word out by
posting on Facebook or tweeting on Twitter.

THIS COULD BE IT...THE END IS NEAR!!
Yes, unfortunately, due to lack of participation and diminishing support, this could be the last year of the Tri-County Athletic Booster Club.
We need you to become involved with the Booster Club - show your support for the Penguin athletes and coaches; help with ideas and planning to encourage school spirit among our students, athletes, coaches, staff, and community! It is upsetting to see the lack of school spirit
and support at our sporting events and just, in general, throughout the school and community. The student athletes put in a lot of time, energy, and effort on their sport(s) and their studies. Many are not just involved in one extra activity, but are in several and still maintain their
grades on an admirable level! Help us to support these kids and help to reinforce the importance of TEAMWORK!
As of right now, we will only have two people that could continue on with the Booster Club that have children in school. If more
people don't get involved, we will be left with no choice but to fold the organization. We will be having our annual meeting May 8th, at
6:30 p.m., in the high school cafeteria. This will be our meeting where we select Board members and Officers and it is our last one of the
2012-2013 school year. If we do not get any additional Board members or Officers, we will be left with no choice but to end the organization. Please contact Kari Thompson, Jen Woyak, Cindy Baumgartner, or Stacy Miller, if you are interested in joining the Booster Club as a
Board member or Officer (you can, also, send an email to tcboosterclub2007@yahoo.com; please contact by April 30th).
What to expect if you would like to get involved: we hold meetings once per month, every 2nd Wednesday, at 6:30 p.m., from September through May of each school year, we usually do concessions for the Homecoming football game as a fundraiser (and other concessions, throughout the school year, if we are asked), pass out school spirit items at the High School Football Homecoming game and High
School Basketball Black Out Night, and take care of apparel design, orders, and sales.
We would like to extend a huge THANK YOU for those that have shown their support over the years and we hope that we can continue; with more people involved, we can grow and become a better support network for our Tri-County Penguins!

Quiz Bowl Season Summary
Math League Team
Meet II Results
The Tri-County Math League team never made it to UWSP for
Meet II due to a snow storm that sent students home after lunch.
Instead of traveling to UWSP, the tests were administered by Mr.
Marti, Principal at Tri-County. The results were released in late
February and the students participating have been as consistent
as the falling snow this winter.
The 2013 Quiz Bowl season ended on March 6. It started
in December with team try-outs, practices in January, and
numerous meets against neighboring high schools.
Tri-County High School again was on top in 1st place with 475
points followed by Athens (397) and John Edwards (383) out of 17
high schools competing in school size 4.
This year's A-team members were Emily Bacon, Brayden
Cummings, Austin Heise, Darin Reid and Maddie
Sherman. Their wins were against Rosholt, Manawa, Wild
Rose, Almond and Amherst.
Competing in Geometry for both Meet I and II and finishing in 1st
place out of 72 students was Jon Koepke. Ken Schulke was in 4th
place, Quincy Pfaff in 6th and Ben Kramer in 15th.
Tri-County High School finished with 5 wins – 1 loss which
resulted in a three-way tie with Wild Rose and Weyauwega
-Fremont for 1st place in the Division. Wild Rose goes to
the championship due to a point tie-breaker.
In the Advanced Algebra category out of 80 students competing,
the results were:

The B-team members were Victoria Boyd, Cody Eisner,

Most of the B-team are freshmen, yet they finished with
wins against Rosholt, Manawa, Weyauwega-Fremont, Almond and Amherst. Their only loss was by a score of 128127 to Wild Rose, this year's southern Division leader.
The coach of the Quiz Bowl team was Mr. Mesyk and the
manager was Becca Cleereman. Everyone agreed it was
a successful and fun season.

Shannon Altenberg - 22nd place
Competing in Advanced Mathematics, out of 83 students participating, Darin Reid was 11th, Aaron Thompson 15th, Patricia Ramirez 17th and Brayden Cummings 20th.
The third and final Math League Meet is scheduled for April 2nd at
UWSP. We hope it stops snowing by then so that the team is able
to travel and enjoy the day at Stevens Point. The Math League
Banquet is scheduled for Monday, May 6 at 6:30 pm at UWSP.
