Dedication of the Lateran Basilica
Dedication of the Lateran
Basilica
Today the Church celebrates the
feast of the Dedication of the
Lateran Basilica in Rome. The
Basilica of St. John Lateran is
the cathedral of Rome. This is
not St. Peter's, but it is the
Pope's cathedral. Also called the
Church of St. John Baptist, it
was the baptism church of
ancient Rome. It was the first
basilica to be built after Emperor
Constantine’s edict, in 313,
granted Christians freedom to
practice their religion and was
consecrated by Pope Sylvester in
324. This feast became a
universal celebration called "the
mother and mistress of all
churches of Rome and the
world". Initially the observance
of this feast was confined to the
city of Rome; then, beginning in
1565, it was extended to all the
Churches of the Roman rite. The
honouring of this sacred edifice
was a way of expressing love
and veneration for the Roman
Church.

Christmas Parcels in Burgess Hill
A group of local organisations, Burgess Hill Lions, Burgess Hill Youth, The King’s Church Mid-Sussex,
Burgess Hill Town Council, Burgess Hill Community Food Bank and St John’s Church, will be delivering
food parcels to families and individuals in need in the Burgess Hill area this Christmas. We know many
people are struggling financially and Christmas creates additional pressure. Local businesses, schools,
colleges and others will be collecting. Christmas items can also be left at the Kings Church in Burgess Hill
and at the Halifax Bank on Church Road. The boxes will be delivered to residents during the first
weekend of December.
Obviously donations would be gratefully accepted, but we also rely on you as our eyes and ears in finding
people who are in need. If you know of someone, please give their name address and phone number if
possible, in a sealed envelope c/o SVP to the Parish Office or email it to svpbhconf@gmail.com - by the
end of November. We will have to ask their permission and we will not reveal who nominated them.
Many thanks.
