כסלו–טבת December 2013 December at PAS From Rabbi Elliot J. Cosgrove Travel to Spain with PAS “My heart is in the east, and I in the uttermost west. How can I find savour in food? How shall it be sweet to me? ... A light thing would it seem to me to leave all the good things of Spain – seeing how precious in mine eyes to behold the dust of the desolate sanctuary.” T he great SpanishJewish poet Yehuda Halevi penned these words in the middle of the twelfth century. Despite his status as the preeminent Hebrew poet and philosopher of his time, this poem and others give expression to his yearning to return to the land of his people, a longing that would eventually find fulfillment with an endof-life journey in 1140. While the particulars of our present moment in Jewish history are no doubt sui generis, the Golden Age of Spanish Jewry is an incredibly useful prism through which we can view ourselves and gain self-understanding. Extended a remarkable degree of tolerance from and Modern Jewish history at the Jewish Theological Seminary. As I am sure his students in our adult learning classes will agree, it is hard to think of an educator as energetic and knowledgeable as he. Trip participants will undoubtedly return with a renewed appreciation for the scholarly leadership emanating from the Seminary as exemplified by Dr. Gampel. Finally, as with all synagogue travel, I know that the trip will serve to build bonds of friendship in our community. Be it one of our frequent trips to Israel, or our visit to Jewish Cuba, time and again, the friendships developed among congregants who travel together extend well beyond the trip itself. I personally am grateful for each one of these experiences that serves to create a sense of community removed from the frenetic pace of New York living. I look forward to making new connections and building on existing ones. The trip information and registration materials are all available at pasyn.org. Please watch your emails for an upcoming information session. See you in Spain! their hosts, Spanish Jewry enjoyed extraordinary cultural, economic and political status and influence. Their poetic and literary achievements served to shape Jewish and non-Jewish culture, and continue to be felt to this day. The decline and crashing end of this efflorescence of Jewish life and living is also the subject of continued study, both on its own terms and to learn how it may inform how we view our present challenges as a Jewish community. It is thus with great excitement that I invite you to participate in the PAS trip to Spain, May 25 – June 2, 2014. I look forward to traveling with PAS congregants to learn about this extraordinary period of Jewish experience. Granada, Seville, Cordoba, Toledo and Madrid – together with Rabbi Zuckerman and the excellent travel services of Da’at, our trip chairs Lisa Grinberg and Sheri Rosenfeld have drafted an itinerary that is filled with both learning and fun. I am especially excited that Professor Benjamin Gampel has agreed to serve as our trip educator. An authority on the Jews of the Iberian Peninsula, Dr. Gampel serves as Professor of Medieval Read the rabbis’ sermons at www.pasyn.org/resources/sermons. As Rabbi Cosgrove said in his Rosh Hashanah sermon, “Return”: “The best form of leadership our shul can provide is not to tell people how they should conduct themselves, not to tell the Conservative movement how to recast its mission, but to model something worthy of emulation, to become a laboratory of Jewish life and living from which ideas emerge that will ripple well beyond the four walls of our synagogue. Everything we do should be aimed at facilitating the return of American Jewry to its Judaism, a mission that begins right now. ... But the most important player in making all this happen is not me and not the cantor. The most important player in this whole equation is you. ... If you will take the step forward, I will, I promise, bring this institution halfway. Together we will demonstrate a model of synagogue life that is authentic, accessible, relevant, engaging, and please God, always evolving. We will create a house of learning, of community and of prayer; a portal of entry for Jews yearning to return.” Thank you for “taking the step forward” in such a meaningful way. Your contribution will truly help supporting PAS’s mission of return. Jewish tradition teaches that every member of a community is expected to contribute to the welfare of the community–even those who benefit from communal funds. In the spirit of this tradition, we are seeking 100% participation in the Kol Nidre Appeal. No gift is too small. If you have not yet taken the opportunity to make a Kol Nidre pledge, we hope you will consider doing so.
