טבת–שבט JANUARY 2013 Shabbaton 5773 Program Calendar Winter/Spring 2013/5773 enclosed From Rabbi Elliot J. Cosgrove Shabbaton 2013 W hen the 19th-century German poet Heinrich Heine declared, “Wie es Christelt sich, so Jűdelt es sich,” he meant to convey that in matters of religion, there is inevitably a relationship between a minority religion and its host environment. While the message and mission of the Jewish faith traces back to Mount Sinai, even the most casual observer can see that that the expression of that faith has been shaped by forces independent of our particularity. From the architecture of our synagogues to the melodies of our prayer, the expression of our faith has been influenced by the larger social context. Anyone invested in the past, present and future of American Jewry would do well to consider the larger ecosystem in which that Judaism has taken and continues to take shape. That is why our Shabbaton this year will welcome not just one, but two authorities on American religious life: Dr. Jonathan Sarna and Dr. Robert Putnam. Throughout this year, our community has focused on the shifting landscape of American Jewish life, a conversation we are committed to for the sake of the future vitality of our own community. Our annual Shabbaton on January 25-26 will serve to sharpen and broaden that conversation by welcoming these pre-eminent scholars for a day of dialogue and community building. Were I to recommend only one book on American Judaism, it would be Dr. Sarna’s treatment of the subject, American Judaism: A History. His keen eye, scholarly engagement and felicitous gift of expression make him the “dean” of the field. Most of all, embedded within his writing is a sense that he is committed to finding the prescriptive steps needed to address our people’s future. Dr. Putnam’s research and writing on the changing face of American Faith has in many ways, defined the field. His book Bowling Alone helped explain how the assumptions of American social life are in the process of being upended, and his more recent volume American Grace is the authoritative book on the ever-changing religious and political landscape in America. Either presenter would suffice as a sole speaker for a Shabbaton. With them here together, in dialogue with each other, our community is in for a provocative intellectual tour de force. Of course, more than a conversation about American Jewish life, the Shabbaton is our opportunity to be immersed in it. By setting aside the day to learn, pray, socialize and be part of our synagogue community, we are all affirming the role each one of us plays in making our synagogue the flagship of religious life that it is. I am especially excited that this year the Shabbaton will take place on Shabbat Shirah, the Shabbat of Song. We will both begin and conclude with festive music from our cantors and music educators. Please see the Shabbaton schedule on the facing page, read about the presenters in the Winter/Spring Program Calendar enclosed with this Bulletin, and visit pasyn. org for more information and to register for the always sold-out Shabbaton. The Shabbaton would not be possible without the tireless work of our Director of Programming, Liz Offenbach, and our entire Shabbaton committee. A big thank you to Vice-President of Programming Paul Corwin, and to Nadine Habousha Cohen, Darcy Dalton, Caryn Seidman-Becker, Aaron Stern and Barbara Weinstein for making it all possible! Mark your calendar, and be sure to register. See you at Shabbaton 2013! Park Avenue Synagogue Bulletin Volume 65 · N°. 5 · JANUARY 2013 · Tevet / Sh’vat 5773 · From Rabbi Elliot J. Back cover On cover and facing page: “Torah V,” by Ellen Alt. 2 Park Avenue Synagogue Bulletin annual community event Shabbaton 2013 Religion in America: Trends and How They Affect the Jewish Community Friday and Saturday | January 25 and 26 Religion is a constant in American life, and there is much discussion about its impact. Spend two days exploring how the American Jewish community fits into the religious landscape of America. Dr. Jonathan Sarna, Professor of American Jewish History at Brandeis University, will present the history of American Jewry, and Dr. Robert Putnam, Professor of Public Policy at Harvard University, will highlight how trends in the Jewish community compare to American religious trends. Join us for their lectures and a dialogue. The Shabbaton takes place on Shabbat Shirah, “the Sabbath of Song,” and we will hear music as well as words. Our own Matt Check will headline a late Friday night Jewish Bluegrass performance, and we’ll end Shabbat with a concert by the PAS Music Department to celebrate the forthcoming PAS children’s CD and Ki Eshmerah Shabbat: A Family Siddur. A Bnei Mitzvah Family trip will be returning as this Bulletin reaches your mailbox, and a June trip for Young Families is fully booked. There is still time to sign up for next April’s trip to celebrate Israel’s 65th Birthday! Even when we do not have a congregational trip on the ground, PAS has a presence in Israel. In 2004, as part of our "Israel This Year" programming theme, PAS raised funds for the arone kodesh in a new Masorti synagogue in Tel Aviv. The 2004 Synagogue Trip visited the shell of the building in Neve Zedek that was to be renovated as the synagogue and cultural center. We presented to Rabbi Roberto Arbib and to the heads of the Masorti Movement not only a check, but also a striking parochet that had been designed and hand-sewn by our members, under the direction of Ellen Alt. Since then, we have followed the progress of the Center. When the yet-to-be renovated building was dedicated in May 2010, Rabbi Arbib said: Places like the Schechter Institute and other pluralistic Batei Midrash that are springing up across Israel are a sign of a genuine revolution. A spiritual and honest revolution that is concerned not only with the home, but also with the spirit within the home. To learn more about the Center and the dedication, read the email message sent by PAS members Amos and Floy Kaminski, who were there. The message appeared the June, 2010 issue of the Bulletin, online at pasyn.org/ Publications. The May 2012 Chairman’s Trip visited the Center and saw “our” parochet hung in front of the still unfinished ark. PAS travelers to Israel continue to visit the Schechter Center. PAS educators attended Shabbat morning services there on the Educators’ trip to Israel last June. Work on the elaborate ark continues. When it is completed, the Center will send us photos to post on the screens in the synagogue lobby. In the meantime, the Center welcomes our visits and invites us to participate in courses, lectures, and concerts during the week, and regular services of the Kehila every Shabbat. It is good to know that even when we are not there, PAS is present among the places of worship and study in Israel. A 7th grader at Horace Mann School, Sam is an enthusiastic learner who was selected by the faculty to be a member of the middle division’s leadership committee and a peer mentor to new students. Sam enjoys a variety of sports, including skiing, soccer, swimming and baseball. He is a member of the alpine ski team at Bromley Mountain in Vermont as well as his school’s seventh grade soccer team. Sam has been fortunate to spend the past five summers at Camp Greylock in Becket, Massachusetts. A caring, sensitive and thoughtful friend and family member, Sam will be volunteering this winter at the Bart J. Ruggiere Adaptive Sports Center at Bromley Mountain, where he will share his love of skiing by helping individuals with mental and physical challenges learn to ski. Sam’s parents and his brother, Miller, are extremely proud of Sam’s accomplishments and look forward to the joyous occasion of his becoming a Bar Mitzvah. They would like to thank everyone at Park Avenue Synagogue not only for their guidance and encouragement leading up to this important milestone, but for the wonderful education and sense of community that PAS has afforded all of them throughout the years. January 19 | Parashat Bo Marti’s Torah portion is Bo, which explores Moses’ strength of character as he and his brother prepare to meet Pharaoh. Marti herself approaches situations with confidence, thoughtfulness and creativity. She shares a special relationship with her older sister Hannah. Marti’s interests are varied, but her passion is consistent. In 7th grade at The Town School, Marti’s favorite subjects are Math, Science and English. She plays for a nationally-ranked travel soccer team, competes in Mathletes, and loves to cook in “Top Chef” fashion. She loves her summers at Raquette Lake Girls Camp where she enjoys water skiing, tennis and sailing. As a mitzvah project, Marti is working with Harlem RBI’s Dream Charter School as a tutor for students who are passionate about sports, but need extra help in the classroom. Marti began her Jewish education at PAS in the Gan class. She is proud to become a Bat Mitzvah and thanks the clergy and her tutor Ariela Wallace for inspiring her and helping her prepare for this important day. ברוכים הבאיםWelcome Noah Paige January 19 | Parashat Bo Son of Lori Paige & Jeffrey Paige Noah has been part of the PAS Community since his days in the Early Childhood Center.
