LOCAL HELP WANTED – DURHAM REGION
How To Answer The Most Common Interview Questions
So you have managed to successfully
stand out from dozens of applicants
and you have been called for an
interview. As much as writing your
cover letter and resume were difficult,
a job interview can easily make even
the most composed of individuals
nervous. For many, job interviews feel
like they’re “do or die”, and feeling as if
you’ve screwed up a job interview can
be devastating.
Page 8
The good thing about job interviews
is that for the most part, they’re all
fairly similar. While there will be a
couple of questions that will be specific
to the job and the company, many of
the most basic job interview questions
remain the same. Here are five of the
most common interview questions and
how to answer them.
1. Why are you the best person for
this job?
By asking you this question, the
interviewer wants to know what skills
you have that other job applicants do
not have. This is your opportunity
to list all of your strengths. Be sure
to relate these strengths directly to
the position you are interviewing for.
When responding, remember – this
is less of a brag session and more of a
pitch to convince the employer that
you are the best person for the job.
2. What is your biggest
accomplishment professionally?
Now that you’ve already discussed
your strengths, it’s time for you to
give the interviewer an example of
how you’ve used these skills. Give an
example that is relevant to the position
you’re interviewing for, even if it is not
necessarily your biggest professional
accomplishment. The point is to
convince your employer that you can
do the job and prove that you have
done it well in the past.
3. Tell me about your last job.
This is your opportunity to emphasize
the skills that you have successfully
used in your previous job. Highlight
how you were able to contribute to
your previous company and the ways
in which you added value to the
www.localhelpwanted.ca
team you were in. You can also give
examples of your success stories and
your relationship with your boss and
colleagues.
4. What are your weaknesses?
It is understandable that people do
not want to talk about their weaknesses.
However, being able to answer this
question with poise will demonstrate
that you are self-aware and are able
to acknowledge your weak points.
Nobody is perfect, and accepting that
means that you are open to learning
and collaborating with people who are
good in the things that you aren’t.
5. How would your past colleagues
and/or manager describe you?
No matter where you work, it’s
important to have a good company
culture where everyone gets along
and there are no communication
gaps. By asking this question, the
employer wants to know how good
your communication and interpersonal
skills are. Highlight instances where
you were able to display these skills
successfully. Be honest when you
are answering this question, as your
employer will be calling your previous
employer for reference.

LOCAL HELP WANTED – DURHAM REGION
5 Common Resume Mistakes That Scream “Unprofessional”
If you’re sending out countless resumes
but still aren’t getting any responses,
it’s time to take a good, hard look over
what you’ve been sending out. Are you
committing one of these common cover
letter or resume mistakes that are apt to
make you appear unprofessional?
1. You’ve Missed Errors
Even if you read and re-read your resume
until your eyes went crossed, just one
or two resume mistakes communicates
carelessness to an employer. Once
you’ve run the document through spellcheck, take it over to a grammar checker
(Grammarly is a popular one) to find any
errors you’ve overlooked. And then, ship
a copy to a reliable friend – possibly even
one of your references – so another human
being can point out any inconsistencies a
computer program can miss.
Pro Tip: Keep it simple! Powerful messages
don’t require complex language. Think
of the best advertising campaigns you’ve
experienced, and you won’t think of War
and Peace. Search out lists of impactful
words, making sure to snatch keywords
directly from any job postings you’re
responding to, then craft sleek, direct
sentences that outline your suitability for
the post.
2. You Used Inappropriate Language
Abbreviations and symbols that seem at
home in a text message or on Twitter have
no place in your carefully crafted catalog
of professional accomplishments. Same
goes for cuss words. It may seem slightly
terrifying that this needs to be said, in
which case you would be astonished at
some of the major resume mistakes and
job search blunders the average citizen has
committed.
Pro Tip: Complete sentences may appear
frightening at first, but worry not! The
internet exists to supply you with examples
of language that is appropriate for
resumes and cover letters. This is not an
endorsement for plagiarism (a.k.a. copying
and pasting). Make sure to use documents
you find as examples, altering language
and re-writing sentences to apply to you
and your situation.
3. You Included a Photograph
There is a time and place for an employer
to see your picture, and that is when they
Google your social media profiles. Keep
that valuable real estate on your resume
for more pertinent information, like why
you’re an ideal candidate for the job.
While popping a photo on your C.V. may
seem innocuous – and in some regions, is
even expected – many employers will weed
out these applications to avoid potential
allegations of discrimination. Plus, photos
can clog up applicant tracking systems
(ATS) software, giving them just one more
reason to chuck your application in the
circular file.
Pro Tip: Make sure to include well-framed
head-and-shoulders photos on all your
social media accounts, and include links
to those profiles beside your email address
and phone number. That means ditching
the oh-so-adorable selfie you snapped with
your pooch/bf/besties. While you’re at it,
you may as well adjust the privacy settings
on those less-than-flattering pics – or
better still, delete them altogether.
4. You Tried to Get Fancy – and Failed
A resume is a document with a very
specific purpose: to communicate your
suitability for an employment opportunity.
The only thing you communicate when
you try to jazz up your application with
a pixelated clipart border on imitation
parchment paper is that you’re stuck in a
time warp circa 1993. Papyrus might be
the perfect font for posters advertising
your block party, but it has no place here.
Sure, graphic designers and other creative
professionals have done some amazing
things with infographics and other nontraditional resumes, but this isn’t about
them. If you look at your resume and find
yourself getting nostalgic for your old
Geocities website, it may be time to start
over from scratch.
Pro Tip: When in doubt, go back to basics.
It’s tough to go wrong with crisp, black
text on a clean, white background. Choose
fonts based on readability, keeping in mind
that the best font for the job changes
depending on whether you’re staying
digital or going hard copy. If you are snail
mailing, or doing an in-person drop-off, it
can help to pick a heftier paper – even one
with a texture – in order to stand out from
the crowd.
5. You Didn’t Get Fancy Enough
Templates are wonderful tools. They
offer us guidance in an uncertain world.
They let us know important formatting
guidelines that don’t come up very often,
like where the return address goes on a
letter. The thing is, like love, sometimes 8
point Times New Roman just ain’t enough.
Regardless of how much – or how little –
experience you have to include on your
resume, each page should look nice when
you take it in as a whole. Designers refer
to this as balancing negative (white) space.
Big blobs of text should be broken into
smaller chunks, while paragraphs or lines
that look too small should be bolstered, or
incorporated into another section. Small
fonts will look cramped, and overly large
fonts will look goofy.
Pro Tip: Get help if you need it. Some
of us were simply not built to fathom the
complexities of design, and that’s okay
(well, unless you’re a designer…) For those
of us who lack that one person in our
network with those particular gifts, there
exists a veritable plethora of options for
hiring one. And for those of us lacking
money, at least some of these talented
individuals may be willing to barter or
donate their time and skills – it never hurts
to ask.

Cover Letters 101: Everything
You Need To Know
Have questions about the purpose
of a cover letter, when it should (or
shouldn’t!) be sent and how it should
be written? Here’s everything you need
to know about cover letters!
1. What is a cover letter?
A cover letter (sometimes referred
to as an ‘application letter’) is a letter
that is sent to a prospective employer,
typically accompanying a resume.
2. Why are cover letters important?
I would strongly recommend a
job applicant to send a cover letter
because it works as a brief description
of the applicant’s abilities, capabilities,
experiences and qualifications. I believe
the only time you may not write a cover
letter is when the employer states they
do not need it. Further, what is written
on the cover letter can make or break
your chances of being called for an
interview. Basically, application letters
give the employer the first impression
about the applicant. However, as we all
know impressions can be deceiving yet
employers bank a lot on the impression
they perceive on the cover letter.
4. What should I include in my cover
letter?
In a cover letter, an applicant states
why they are best suited to be awarded
the job they are seeking. It is advisable
to make the cover letter clear, brief and
to the point, briefly outline your skills
and experiences.
5. Should I still send a cover letter
when it’s not requested?
Some people believe that if they’re
not explicitly asked to send a cover
Jan. 10 – Jan. 24, 2015
letter, then it isn’t necessary, simply
because employers find relevant
employment information within the
CV. This assumption is incorrect. Not
only are cover letters an important part
of the job application process – they
also give you the opportunity to share
relevant information that may not fit
into your resume.
6. Do I need to include a cover letter
with email applications?
Cover letters are important to send
when you are doing a request for
employment by email. The cover letter
can either be sent as an attachment
alongside the resume, or it can be
written on the body of the email. If
you’re sending the application directly
to a specific individual’s email address,
you can address the person you’re
sending the application to in a more
personal manner. For example, instead
of saying ‘Dear Hiring Manager’, you
can use ‘Dear Ms. McGregor’. Experts
encourage and recommend applicants
to make use of the subject heading to
attract the employers’ attention on
exactly what you are applying for before
reading the rest of the body.
Even with the changing technology,
cover letters have been encouraged by
human resource managers as a tool
for easy assessment on the viability
of a candidate. Furthermore, human
resource managers use the cover letters
to grade the applicants and weed out
the ones they think are not equipped
for that particular job.
