Colorado Ninety-Nines February 2015 Newsletter of the Colorado Ninety-Nines International Organization of Women Pilots February Meeting Stephanie Wells and the Weather Upcoming Events Stephanie Wells will be giving a safety briefing on pilot weather information. This will be an official FAAST Representative Wings Safety talk which is open to the public as well as being our NinetyNines Chapter annual safety meeting. Learn about the many weather information resources available to pilots both before and during the actual flight. Avoid making one of the most dangerous and preventable mistakes in general aviation today. The link below gives more detail about the talk. See page two for details. 99s Meetings FEB 14 Chapter Meeting Rocky Mountain Metro (BJC) FEB 26 Thursday evening meeting: Rocky Mountain Metro (BJC) Stephanie got her undergraduate degree in Meteorology at Iowa Stephanie Wells State University at the same time she was commissioned in the US Air Force. Her first duty assignment was as a weather forecaster at George Air Force Base in the Mojave Desert of California. Two years after that assignment, she was accepted into the second group of women to go to Air Force Pilot training. Stephanie has always been interested in weather, and her favorite flying assignment was as a typhoon chaser in WC-130's flying the Pacific Ocean out of Guam. Now, she is still following all the climate change studies with great interest. "I feel that I use my weather training and experience every time I go fly my little plane". This year Lightspeed awarded grants to the eight aviation nonprofit organizations which received the most on-line votes on Lightspeed’s grant competition web site. First place prize of $10,000 went to Pilots N Paws, "...helping save the lives of innocent animals". Second place prize of $8,000 went to New Tribes Mission, …"efficient and safe missionary aviation support in remote areas around the world". The following positions are open: Chairman Vice Chairman Secretary Treasurer Director #1 Director #2 The positions are for two years and the nominated person must have been a Ninety-Nine member for a minimum of one year. Terri Bazacos and Stephanie Wells If someone is interested in a position they should contact one of the nominating committee, Terri Bazacos or Vanita Gallo. April 11, 2015, 1-4pm at Centennial’s Aspen Flying Club Working with the Girl Scouts to earn a 99s Aviation Patch is one of the ways our Chapter provides aviation education for young girls in our community. This year we are inviting 60 Juniors (grades 4-5) to rotate around five stations centered around paper airplane aerodynamics, airline history, ACT operations, weather science, and of course the actual aircrafts. We are in need of volunteers to help make this event wonderful, so please join us! If you have any questions please contact Kara Pruitt, or Michelle Estevez. We hope that everyone is able to participate in this wonderful event! If you are interested in volunteering, please sign up HERE. February 2015 Crosswind Chatter Page 4 Mari Murayama, Julie Filucci March Meeting March 14, local Aerobatic Pilot and Instructor, Dagmar Kress, will talk to us about spin, unusual attitude and basic aerobatic training and why every GA pilot should spend a little time upside down. Flying Skills Exercise By Rod Machado One of my favorite methods of developing rudder and aileron coordination skills is known as a coordination roll. Pilots sometimes refer to this as a Dutch roll, but this is a misnomer. And no, a Dutch roll isn't something caused by wearing wooden shoes when you fly. A Dutch roll is actually an unstable behavior typically associated with swept wing airplanes and it's not what we're discussing here. What I'm talking about is a maneuver where you point the airplane's nose at some outside reference and roll right and left with a moderate bank while keeping the rudder and aileron coordinated. Accelerate Your Career! TIME IS RUNNING OUT! The Professional Pilot Leadership Initiative (PPLI) applications are due January 31, 2015. Simply put: The 99s PPLI aims to accelerate the advancement of women in all pilot professions, facilitate mentoring among women pilot professionals, and enhance our leadership role in the aviation/aerospace community. The PPLI program provides highly motivated 99s members with tools to develop their careers and leadership abilities through guided activities and formal mentoring partnerships with experienced women professional pilots. How do you know your flight controls are coordinated? Because the airplane's nose doesn't move as it rolls alternately between right and left banking conditions. Here's how it's done. With the nose pointed to some outside reference while in level flight, roll to the right and add just enough right rudder to keep the nose fixed on the reference point. This is exactly how you enter a coordinated turn to the right, correct? When you reach approximately 30 degrees of bank immediately roll the airplane to the left. This means the moment you apply left aileron to begin the roll, you'll need to apply just enough left rudder to keep the nose straight as you roll. Now, what I don't want you to do is to look at the ball in the inclinometer during this maneuver. Why? Because there's no telling what the ball is doing. In some airplanes the ball might remain nearly centered. The Cessna 150 is such an airplane. Try this in a Remos LSA, and the ball will be banging up against each side of the inclinometer's glass tube during a perfectly coordinated coordination roll. It will sound like you left the airplane's turn signal on...oops, sorry, that only happens in a flying car. Michelle Estevez, Shawn Egle and Kara Pruitt January Meeting The inclinometer doesn't necessarily reflect the quality of your turn during the entry, compared to when the turn is established. So don't look at it during this exercise. GEORGE E. BYE, gave a fabulous presentation on his Aero Electric Aircraft Corporation! We learned a lot about his solar airplane and how much of a savings it will be for flight schools. The fuselage can be held by one man! WOW! The coordination roll is an excellent training exercise and it's one I use quite frequently with pilots during their biennial flight reviews. If you can keep the nose steady on the reference point during this maneuver, then you've definitely got game—rudder and aileron game, that is. Reprinted with cheerful permission from The Pilot Workshop.com Rod Machado has been flying since 1970, instructing since 1973 and has over 8,000 hours of flight time earned the hard way--one CFI hour at a time. Since 1977 he has taught hundreds of flight instructor revalidation clinics and safety seminars and he was named the 1991 "Western Region Flight Instructor of the Year". Rod is the author of some of the most popular books, DVDs and CDs in aviation. You can read his monthly column in AOPA Pilot magazine as well as in Flight Training Magazine.
