His story is the old classic example of the still asked question, “why do bad things happen to good people?” Job was just like any of us who felt the anguish of pain and suffering when things go bad in life. Despite of everything he hung on to God. He kept his faith and surrendered everything in God’s hands even though he didn’t understand exactly what’s going on. He got back his peace and his strength to carry on in life despite the bad things that happened to him. He was able to overcome those trials which the devil actually set as a trap for him to abandon God. Those who have faith in God repeat the words of Job: “The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” In the face of suffering, our faith and hope give us confidence that, no matter what happens, God has a plan for us, and we are promised something so much greater in the life to come. In good times and bad, then, we persevere with abandonment to divine providence. Whatever the Lord gives us, we accept patiently and with trust. We live with a sense of detachment, recognizing that all we have is a gift from God, and that we will merely enjoy it as long as we have it. It is in recognizing every moment as a gift and never taking our blessings for granted, that we nurture a spirit of humble gratitude. While we will feel joy and sorrow, they will never overcome our great hope in what the Lord has prepared for us. The gospel reading tells us about the day in the life of Jesus in which he was all day surrounded with a lot of people suffering from different kinds of maladies. He cured them all by his power as God. God is comfort in the midst of suffering. There was one common element … there was faith. The healings and miracles were God’s answer to that faith. Yet Jesus shows us in the gospel that there are more important things than the physical cures. After that busy day curing all the sick he went to a lonely place to pray. A deep sense of personal relationship with God is what faith is all about. Still much further, Jesus moved on away from that place to another to preach the gospel. While for us perhaps our physical well being is the priority. But for Jesus it is our spiritual well being to prepare us for eternal life. He is here for us to be transformed by the gospel that we may share with Him here in this life and in heaven. Two statements may sum up God’s message for us this Sunday; “Hung on to faith no matter what and we’ll win.” And, “Let us move on further in life and proclaim the good news.” Blessings to you and have a good week! Fr.
