ANOINTING OF PEOPLE WHO ARE SICK - In the event of an emergency contact the Rectory at any time. Anointings can be requested before a planned hospital visit. FROM THE PASTOR CHRISTIAN UNITY - Each year on this date, January 25, we conclude the celebration of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Why January 25th? Because on this date we celebrate the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul. In this life (and perhaps in the next life too) conversion is never complete and the fulfillment of Jesus’ prayer that “all may be one” is ongoing for us, both as individuals and as corporate bodies. CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK – Today our nation begins the celebration of Catholic Schools Week with the theme for 2015 of “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service”. We want to acknowledge our own Holy Family School and thank all those who help to make this excellent experience possible: our pastors, parishioners, school alumni, current school families, principal, faculty, staff---and of course, our students. We also recognize the leadership of our Archbishop and the support of his Archdiocesan Office for Catholic Education. “WITHIN” A FAIR QUESTION - “How come in St. Ann Parish there are so many other “things” that happen within Sunday Mass? I don’t get it and it bothers me a bit. I’m just coming for Mass and I don’t find all this clutter helpful.” “SERMONS IN STONE” is a phrase I came across years ago describing church buildings. Before a word is uttered, the physical structure itself speaks through its shape, material, height, focus, internal geography, stained glass, statues, paintings, etc. SERMONS IN STRUCTURE – The way the Service is shaped, too, speaks. Have you ever noticed that while we celebrate a lot of events within Mass, we never celebrate Mass within another event? We even refer to the Mass as being “the Most Blessed Sacrament.” This is because when we celebrate Mass the once-for-all saving event of Christ is made present so that we may allow the past seven days’ events of our journey incorporated into the one Christ-Event, and so that Christ the Person and Christ the Event may become a more integral and integrated part of us. A KEY QUESTION – Am I fitting Sunday Mass into my life, or am I fitting my life into Sunday Mass? Does my life have a context into which it is fits, or is my life the context into which all things are to be located? CHRIST OUR CONTEXT – Since Christ is our context, and since the Mass (especially the Sunday Mass of obligation) is point for the integration of Christ into all things and of all things into Christ, we celebrate within the Most Blessed Sacrament such lesser sacraments as: Baptism, First Holy Communion, Confirmation, Marriage, Ordination and the Anointing of the Sick. We go forth to our graves from our Funeral Mass and there are many other rituals celebrated within the Most Blessed Sacrament. SO - “How come in St. Ann Parish there are so many other “things” that happen within Sunday Mass?” It’s an attempt to make visible the deep truth that in Christ all things “live, and move, and have their being” (Acts 17:28) and that with St. Paul we might proclaim that we are “always carrying about in our body the dying of the Lord Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may be made manifest in our body” (2 Cor. 4:10). 1 026Ann World Meeting of Families is coming to Philadelphia in September 2015 and you can help! TO ALL OUR VOLUNTEERS SAFE ENVIRONMENT/MANDATED REPORTER UPDATE REQUIRED As part of our Catholic commitment to safe environments, the Archdiocese recently updated its policies and training curriculum for mandated reporters of child abuse and neglect. If you have direct contact with children, you may be a mandated reporter. Under Pennsylvania law, any person, paid or unpaid, who works, volunteers and/or comes into direct contact with children in a program, activity or service is a mandated reporter and must immediately report suspicions of child abuse or neglect to ChildLine at 800-932-0313. Please visit our website at www.churchofsaintann.org to read the Mandated Reporter Brochure then review and sign the Mandated Reporter Acknowledgement form and return to St Ann Rectory.
