2007 Opportunity Quilt
68 members made 121 blocks, of which 113 were used
to make the Opportunity Quilt for 2007, Hannah’s
Jewels. Many thanks from project organizers and quilt
assemblers Robin Gallagher, Marilyn Pond, Joanie Wolf
and Cathe Hagerman-Beizer. Thanks also are sent to
Margie Oschwald for binding the quilt, and a
particularly gianormous THANKS to Sue Salinger for
her superb quilting design and sewmanship!!!
Opportunity Tickets are available for sale and for guild
members to pick up, in packets of 24, to sell to
neighbors/friends/family outside the guild. A 5”x7”
color photo postcard of the quilt (to show prospective
ticket buyers) is also available. This is an important
fund-raiser that supports our programs and workshops,
and it’s a great opportunity for every guild member to participate with what amounts to minimal effort!
Tickets are available at every general meeting, or may be ordered by calling Cathe (562-425-7749), Robin (562596-0602), or Marilyn (562-972-2720). The drawing for the quilt winner will take place at our December 13,
2007 general meeting. The suggested donation for tickets is $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00.
If you would like to help us show the quilt, and sell tickets, at another guild’s meeting as your opportunity to
visit them and hear a speaker of interest to you, please give us a call or stop by our table. We have a list of the
member guilds of the Southern California Council of Quilt Guilds, their meeting days, times, locations, and
website addresses (also available on the SCCQG website). Most guilds have their program information
available online or can be contacted to see who is scheduled for 2007 lectures and workshops.
If you are already a member of another quilt guild in So. Cal. and are able and willing to display Hannah’s
Jewels and offer tickets at that guild’s monthly general meeting sometime that is prearranged, please let us
know – by email, or by phone (at the numbers above) - or stop by our table at the next meeting.
And finally, if you can volunteer to sell opportunity tickets for a period of time at a quilt show or fair where
Hannah’s Jewels will be on display, we are in the process of scheduling this for 2007 and we can use your help!
The following is a list of all our talented and generous block makers for Hannah’s Jewels – many hands made
this work of art:
Pat Adair, Joyce Andrew, Loretta Barber, Pat Barton, Cindy Beaver, Karen Binkley, Ricky Bragg, Deb
Cardinale, Linda Castle, Jan Chiaramonte, Ruth Cox, Lyndell Darby, Paula Dudek, Anne Dutton, Kasey

Hope you all enjoyed Cathy Van Bruggen. I have always liked the pieced quilts with appliqué added,
now if I only enjoyed appliquéing. She showed us some beautiful quilts and it was nice to see three
generations involved, mother, daughter and granddaughter.
Marilyn Pond has a fun party in store for our 14th birthday. I remember 14, vaguely. Moving on…
Along with appetizers and cake, the “Viewers Choice” winners of our quilt show will be announced and
Maren’s inventive ribbons awarded. In my book you are all winners. Thank you to all who participated
in our quilt show.
It has been a busy few months and I am looking forward to a little slow down. Maybe I will even get
my “One Block Wonder” finished and actually have something for show and tell in June, along with Sue
Salinger and Ruth Blanchette. They have each made two (Sue’s Dragon was in the show) and now Sue
is working on a third. That’s what I get for hanging out with over achievers. Love’m anyway.
Good luck to all who entered quilts in “Springtime by the Sea”. See you at the party.

Show ‘N Tell (aka, Shown ‘n Told!)
We had 26 wonderful quilts at the April meeting so in the interest of saving space, I will be brief!! See them up
close at www.photobucket.com. Log on using “QBSPhotos”. Password is “quilting”. Click on April 2007 and
double click to enlarge any you would like to see up close. Thanks to Jeri Wilson and Renata Wilson for taking
notes at the April meeting.
Joanie Wolf’s
quilt features
Batik Hearts.
She made it for
the first
anniversary of
her daughter
and son-in-law.
Karen Binkley brought in a
beautiful red and white mystery
quilt she started in a class by
Celeste Lim at Sew and Vac.
Beth Shibley showed us a lovely
scrappy star baby quilt.
Kasey Egelus showed a
unique wall hanging
which features a rubbing
of Stonehenge. She
started it at a QBS retreat
last October.
Megan Waterbury is probably our
youngest quilter ever. She started
her quilt when she was four and
finished it and entered it in the
Orange County Fair when she was
five. Way to go Megan!!! You did
a wonderful job.
Beth also brought in a
beautiful Log Cabin in
yellows and reds which
she made for a graduate
in her family.
Pat Barton calls her clever batik quilt “Cat
Tails.” She also showed us an adorable quilt
called “Classy Cats” which she made for the
QBS Auction.
Cindy Garcia calls her
gorgeous quilt “No Pain,
No Jane.” It has 5,584
pieces!!! She made it while
suffering painful physical
complications of Lupus.

Linda Fowler showed us a lovely
antique “Flower Garden” quilt
that was made in the 1930's and
rescued by a 92 year old friend
who was cleaning out her attic!!!
It has been donated to her church
and will be sold on e-bay as a
fund-raiser.
Jo Melis calls this unbelievable
piece “Pythagoras Lute”. It is
paper pieced and she learned the
technique from a class at Bearly
Stitching’. She told us it must
have taken “more than 2 hours to
complete!!!”
Darlene Fong
created “Tiger
Eyes” using a
“Painting With
Inks” technique
taught by Pat
Blair. She plans
to donate this
fabulous animal
to the QBS
Auction.
Chris Panos brought us
several wonderful
pieces. First, she
showed a gorgeous
table runner which she
plans to donate to the
QBS Auction. Second,
she brought in a lovely
quilt which contains
religious symbolism
which she intends to
give to a special graduate. Third, she
showed her beautiful “Vanilla Latte” which
she made as a wedding gift. She told us this
is the first quilt she has machine quilted
herself.
Ann Leibovitz showed an
adorable wall hanging called
“Siamese Cats” which she made
for her sister. She also showed an
eloquent quilt she calls “Bella
Bella”.
Tiffany Mumma showed a
wonderful action-filled quilt
she calls “Cyclist in Motion.”
The block is called “z-star” by
M’liss Rae Hawley.
Pat Blank showed a sweet quilt
she calls “Carousel for Baby”
which she machine pieced and
quilted for her great grand
nephew. The back is soft and
minkie-like.
Page 7
Quilters By the Sea
This beautiful quilt was
shown by Pat Adair and is
owned by Mary Carbajal.
It is a rubbing that started
at a retreat. It has
circulated as a Round
Robin, has been worked
on by many hands and
shows many techniques.
Kayleen Leone
brought in four
beautiful seasonal wall
hangings which she
pieced, quilted and
machine appliquéd.
Randy
Miller
I went to the quarterly SCCQG meeting Saturday,
April 21, 2007, at the LA County Quilt Guild in
Downey. The subject was “Combined Quilt
Shows.” There were several speakers there
discussing the pros and cons of two or more guilds
getting together to have a quilt show. One of the
speakers was from the Central Coast. They have
seven guilds that have formed the Associated
Guilds of the Central Coast; their next quilt show
will be at the Madonna Inn.
I brought back flyers from several guilds regarding
their upcoming events. They will be available at
the next guild meeting.
Our next SCCQG meeting will be held on July 21 at
the Central Coast Quilt guild.
May, 2007
William Johnson
showed a lovely
unique circular block
quilt which he calls
“Twist and Turn.”
He told us “you quilt
as you go.” This is
the first quilt he has
made for himself and
we think he deserves
to keep it!
Patti Paschall
showed a wonderful
quilt she started at
the Cherry Valley
Retreat last year. It
was a mystery quilt
and just radiates
excitement. She
calls it “Just for
Me.” Patti is our
new Newsletter
Editor and we are thrilled to be working with her.
Thank you Patti.

Show ‘N Tell (aka, Shown ‘n Told!) - Continued
Thanks to all of you who brought quilts to the February meeting. Although we only had a few, they were
wonderful. Also, apologies to our February Show ’N Tell presenters. These pictures were inadvertently left out
of the March Newsletter. You can also see them up close at www.photobucket.com. Thanks to Jeri Wilson and
Lynne Miller for taking notes at the February meeting.
Shirley Johanson showed us her
beautiful quilt which she calls
“Card Tricks” designed by Kathy
George. The fabric is all roses
and she hand quilted it herself.
Way to go Shirley!
Susan Goldman displayed a
wonderful, cuddly “Winter
Flannel Quilt”. She is a new
member in QBS and told us this
is the first quilt she’s quilted on
her new long-arm quilt machine!
We need to get this lady’s phone
number!
Suzanne Rose
brought in an
adorable quilt
called “Ben’s
Star Quilt-Where
does the water
go?”. She made
it for her 9 year
old nephew. It is composed of water
related fabrics and the back sparkles
with glow-in-the-dark stars.
Patti Paschall
showed us her
adorable
Twisted
Kitties. Each
one is a
different fabric!
Jo Melis also
provided some
“Twisted
Kitties”. Hers
are red, white
and black and
she intends to
donate them to
the QBS Quilt
Auction. Thank
you Jo! This is
a terrific quilt.
Karen Kimmel showed an intricate quilt she
started in Pat Speth’s class at a QBS
Workshop. The workshop was called “5-inch
is a Cinch” and everybody loved it. The quilt
is called Stars and Hourglass and simply
sparkles . Karen also used a technique by
John Flynn called “pebble quilting” which
added so much to the design.
June Stephens brought in a simply
lovely “Slanted Stars” quilt top
she is making for her Mother. Her
Mom is ill and June is working
very hard to get it done while she
still has time to enjoy it. She
found the perfect backing fabric
on the way in to guild as it has the
word “love” written on it.
Kayleen Leone modeled a
wonderful scrappy KNITTED
poncho in terrific colors. She
also showed a cute patchwork
tote bag which she made for her
daughter. The fabric is by Amy
Butler and was purchased in
Hawaii. She also brought her
daughter. Pat Blank, Kayleen
Leone and Kayleen’s daughter,
Teresa make three generations of
QBS members in one family.
Welcome Teresa.

Randy Miller
I want to thank everyone who donated quilts

everyone to sew up. I especially want to
thank our Community Relations committee,
who work to get all this done.
Our next meeting will be at the Bunney

note the date; it is on the first Sunday this
month because of Mother’s day.
Remember, everyone is welcome to come
and help make kits or to sew on your own

It’s Fabric Department and
What You Can Do To Save It
If your local Wal-Mart has not been remodeled then it might be
scheduled to do so. If the Corporate Office receives enough
requests before the remodel date, they will keep the fabric
department open. Get your letters, phone calls and emails out
there and remember to mention your store. This is what I was
told by a Wal-Mart employee (while buying fabric, of course).
