Principal’s Corner Dear Parents, Phone (843)-695-2460 Fax (843) 695-2465 As we approach Spring Break and the end of the school year, it is easy to convince ourselves that missing a day of school here and there or getting to school a little late doesn’t really matter. In order to benefit from the full year of instruction and finish strong, we need to resolve to being on time and attending school every day. Research is very clear with regard to this issue; attendance matters. Missing school can have an impact throughout your child’s school years. New studies show that often these absences create a cascading effect from which your child can never recover (Sparks, 2014). Children in the early grades are building a strong foundation for learning and mastering the basics. Studies show that children who miss just one day of school every two weeks in kindergarten score lower in reading and math at the end of first grade, which means they are never able to make up the learning they missed. Early absences also set a pattern. A cycle of absences begins for students who get in the habit of missing school. This cycle can have an impact on the rest of their lives, as studies indicate that missing school is one of the strongest predictors of dropping out of high school (Sparks, 2014). If absenteeism and tardiness have characterized your child’s school career thus far, it is not too late to turn things around. Make reliable transportation and childcare plans for your child, and have a backup plan in case something happens. Help your child organize what he is going to wear to school and school supplies the night before so the morning routine can be smoother. Finally, emphasize bedtime and morning routines. Doing things in the same order each day (waking up, brushing teeth, getting dressed, etc.) will help your child be on time and feel less rushed in the morning. Remember, your child can’t learn if he’s not in school; we miss them when they are not here! Come to EES at 6:00 pm Tonight for a Fine Arts Night Featuring 3rd & 4th Grade and Clubs Performances After School Chorus and Dance Clubs will be performing tonight along with the 3rd and 4th Grade students.
