If you took two identical atomic clocks and placed one at the foot of the Washington Monument and the other at the top, the one on the ground would run slightly slower than the one at the top. Both would be telling the correct time, given their relative distance from the surface of the earth. March 29, 2015 You don’t have to be a physicist to understand that time speeds up and slows down. A week of vacation just whizzes by, while a week at work can seem interminable. A week of vacation spent on the beach passes much more quickly than a week of vacation spent constantly on the run. The quick succession of important events has the effect of making time seem longer. From that standpoint, Holy Week should be the slowest week of the year, because it’s a week in which we focus on the most important events of all time: the passion, death and resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Palm Sunday sets Holy Week in motion. It highlights the fickleness of the people who wave palms and shout “Hosanna” to Jesus, and five days later wave their fists and cry out “Crucify Him.” The palm we receive is a symbol of our own fickleness as we say “Hosanna” in our hearts as we receive Jesus in the Eucharist, and then crucify Him again by our failure to live out the Eucharist in our daily lives. The palm you receive should be displayed in our home and a yearlong reminder of how often we exemplify the fickleness of our faith. On Monday evening, Archbishop Wuerl celebrates the Chrism Mass at the Cathedral, during which he blesses and consecrates the oils used in the Church’s sacramental celebrations: Sacred Chrism, the Oil of Catechumens, and the Oil of the Sick. They are then distributed to all the parishes, and remind us of our unity through our Archbishop. All the priests of the Archdiocese are invited to participate in this Mass, during which they reaffirm their commitment to celibacy and obedience to the Archbishop. Thursday evening begins the Sacred Triduum, really a single liturgical celebration spread over three days. We begin with the Solemn Celebration of the Lord’s Supper at 7:00 pm on Holy Thursday. This Mass commemorates the Institution of the Eucharist and of the sacrament of Holy Orders. During that Mass the celebrant washes the feet of twelve parishioners, thus imitating the action of Jesus who washed the feet of His disciples at the Last Supper. The Eucharist is the source and the summit of our Catholic faith, and the Priesthood is the Lord’s gift to the Church to perpetuate Christ’s real and true presence at the Last Supper in every daily and Sunday celebration of the Eucharist. In contrast to the joy of Holy Thursday, Good Friday is a somber commemoration of the Lord’s passion and death by which He won for us the redemption for which the world groaned since the sin of Adam and Eve. Staring at 7:00 pm, it is not a Mass but a service of adoration of the Cross of Christ, during which Holy Communion, consecrated on Holy Thursday, is received by the faithful. Make it a priority to attend. After all, Jesus is just dying to see you. Holy Week culminates in the explosive joy of the Easter Vigil, celebrated at 8 pm. It is the most important and dramatic liturgy of the Church. It is at this Mass that adults are baptized and confirmed and that Christians of other denominations are formally welcomed into the fullness of the Catholic Church. If you have never participated in the Easter Vigil, make it your responsibility to attend this year. Yes, it’s a long ceremony— about the length of a feature film, but shorter than a Redskins game! Holy Week should be the slowest week of the year, because we celebrate the most important events of our redemption. Make plans to participate in it as much as you can. And have a good, and slow, week. “Act, and God will act, work and He will work.” -- St. Joan of Arc 2015 Holy Week Schedule Monday, March 30 Mass 6:30 & 8:30 am No 6:30 pm Mass Tuesday, March 31 Mass 6:30 & 8:30 am, 6:30 pm Confessions: 7:00-8:30 pm Wednesday, April 1 Mass 6:30 & 8:30 am, 6:30 pm “Born for This” (school performance): 10:30 am Confessions: 7:00-8:30 pm Holy Thursday, April 2 NO Morning Mass Confessions: 12 noon to 2:00 pm Mass of the Lord’s Last Supper: 7:00 pm Adoration until Midnight Good Friday, April 3 On Good Friday NO Morning Mass Catholics over the age "Born For This" of 14 are obliged to (school performance): 12 noon abstain from meat.
