January 13 - January 19, 2012 Vol. 7 No. 3 Former Florida Governor and Senator Bob Graham Visits Key West’s Little White House and San Carlos Institute Photos by Tom Oosterhoudt Now 75, Bob Graham was born in Coral Gables and graduated from the University of Florida. A life long Democrat, he served 38 consecutive years in public office and never lost an election. He was the 38th Governor of Florida, serving two terms, from 1979 to 1987. Graham also served three terms as United State Senator from 1987 to 2005. His current priority is “The Bob Graham Center for Public Service” at his alma mater, the University of Florida. Gov. Graham has four daughters and 11 grandchildren. It was 25 years ago when he was governor, that Bob Graham, approved the renovation of the San Carlos in Key West by the group of Cuban-Americans led by Rafael Peñalver, who still serves as President of the San Carlos Institute. This past weekend, Penalve` was proud to give the former governor his first tour of the historic Cuban landmark since the renovation was completed. O! Harbor master John H. Geiger constructed this home for his large family c. 1846, and it was inhabited by his descendants for over a hundred years. The museum is resplendent with period antiques and bird illustrations created by John James Audubon. An eponymous Geiger tree and an extensive orchid collection grace the grounds. OIRF’s second tour of this winter season takes a path through 1912. During the evening tour, let twilight casts an illusion of Key West when the Railroad first arrived. 711 Elizabeth Street 711 Ashe Street When the railroad came to town, a cigar maker called this modest Greek-revival cottage near the top of Solaris Hill home. The intervening years were not kind, and the house was quite dilapidated when new owners took possession in 2009. Enter its front door now and fastforward a hundred years into a modern minimalist masterpiece of interior design; a living space akin to a sophisticated New York City loft apartment. A pavilion-like cottage, done in a Caribbean colonial style, is actually a 1993 addition to this early 20th C. neighborhood. Back then, several shotgun houses for local cigar factory workers stood in the vicinity; before a fire in 1923 demolished most. View the freshly-completed 21st century renovation of this extraordinary Key West residence – open and airy luxury living on a small scale. The tour is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, January 20 and 21, from 5 to 8 pm. Tickets are $25 and are available in advance. For credit card purchase, buy tickets online at www. oirf.org <http://www.oirf.org/> or call 305-294-9501. Tickets are also available for purchase by check or cash at: Capital Bank, (Old Town & North Roosevelt Branches in Key West; MM30.4, Big Pine; 2348 Overseas Highway, Marathon); Audio Video in Paradise (1124 Key Plaza); Royal Furniture (3326 N. Roosevelt Blvd) and the Oldest House, 322 Duval. During tour hours, tickets will be sold at the featured houses – cash or check, please. Houses may be viewed in any order and participants who feel pressed for time can spread their visits over two nights. As a bonus, a limited number of advanced tickets include touring the 4 private homes via Conch Train at no extra charge. Each Train group will be lead by a knowledgeable local guide. Please reserve a train seat by calling 305294-9501. Choose a starting time of 4:45, 5:15, 5:45 or 6:15pm and plan on arriving at the Oldest House, 322 Duval Street, 20 minutes before departure time. 506 & 504 Catherine Street 643 William Street This elegant “Eyebrow Conch” was crafted by a ship’s carpenter, Edward Roberts, c.1885 and his widow, Leonora, still lived there in 1912. All the charming carpenter Gothic embellishments were retained during a major 1990’s renovation. Subsequent interior up-dates, including an inviting “country Over the years, a shotgun house built here in the 1880’s had been altered so many times, what was there a hundred years ago is only a guess. Attendance is limited to adults 21 and over. For ten years, the Florida Keys have had the services of the most effective congressional representative to ever represent the Keys. Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, better known to her many friends in the Keys as “Ily”, has done more to address Keys’ issues than any congressperson before her. She has spent more time here than any other Congressman. Ily has also been the most accessible for any Federal problem or issue that concern Keys residents. Yes, she has become one of my closest friends over the years, and she has made me extremely proud as she became a champion of gay rights. The fact is she had nothing to gain in her leadership for equality for everyone. She did it because it was “the right thing to do”. And as far as helping out the Florida Keys, Ily has only done it because she fell in love with the Florida Keys when we became a part of her district at the last redistricting process ten years ago. Each of Florida’s 27 congressional districts will be redrawn to hold 696, 345 residents. The 2010 census put Monroe County at close to 73,000 residents. These figures clearly show that the Keys are only 10 % of Ily’s total electorate. The bottom line is that our vote has always been inconsequential in Congressional elections. But none the less, our Congresswoman has fought hard for every issue that has affected the Keys over the last ten years. From issues involving the National Marine Sanctuary, clean shore water issues, waste water issues, environmental issues, offshore drilling, insurance issues, etc. our congresswoman has been there for us and has even brought home huge Federal money for the Keys. Ily has always been a champion of the Keys commercial fishermen and shrimpers. Furthermore, she has done so much for the Keys, she has won the hearts of many die hard Democrats (I was one!) with her years of selfless and dedicated service. Speaking from my experience alone, her staff has helped me assist countless Keys residents with Visa issues, green card issues, and social security issues. They have even helped me set up folks who visit D.C. with White House tours. And her office door in D.C. is always open to Keys residents. As I write this there are four different plans in the State House that would take the Keys away from the Congresswoman, even though she has made it clear that she would like to keep the Keys in her district. Unfortunately many of the plans are mere ploys for some state politicians to boost their voting inside their projected future districts. The State Senate’s redistricting plan is the only one that makes sense and follows a logical district line for Ily that would keep her as the representative for all the coastal communities from Miami Beach to Key West, a clean district delineation that would make sense for keeping her on top of all the coastal and water issues that she has represented so well over the last ten years. The fact is the fishing industry sorely needs her knowledgeable representation. Imagine if they throw the Keys to a district that includes Hialeah and the western farm country of south Florida? The Keys would be so forgotten, we would have little if any congressional representation. Just like our state senate seat, the Keys will be a lost cause. When is the last time we saw our state senator down here, or anyone from their office? That would be our future without Ily. There is no clear answer on how to let Tallahassee know how we feel, that we want to keep our congresswoman. But it might not hurt to call Rep. Will Weatherford, the chairman of the redistricting committee at (850)4883928 and let him know how you feel. Or you can email him and the committee at mydistrictbuilder@ myfloridahouse.gov If we make enough noise, the redistricting committee just might do the right thing, and let common sense prevail. Let’s keep Ily! Witty writing and all the performers are tops,” says theatregoer Bill Goldner. Theatre critic C.S. Gilbert of Solaris Hill calls Forbidden Broadway “a hoot - and an excellent launch for the tlocal 2011-12 theatrical season. Anyone with even a passing familiarity with Broadway classics will enjoy this production. For those who love, or even like, the genre, it’s a must see. The laughter meter registers at least two Depends.” Audience member Debby Marten Sola said the Forbidden Broadway “show was hilarious. Great performances by the cast. Great show, my sides hurt I laughed so hard!” And Tom Oosterhoudt of Conch Color says: “I am going to see it twice just to make sure I caught all the laughs. Get ready to bust a gut! This is Broadway satire at its best, like Saturday Night Live, but live! Forbidden Broadway shows no mercy, and takes no prisoners. There has never been a finer or funnier skewering of the Great White Way.” The cast of Forbidden Broadway is made up of fantastic local performers Eric Cole, J.B. McLendon, Gayla Morgan and Marjorie Paul-Shook, who are audience favorites in Key West. All performers play multiple roles in the show, sometimes even in one number! Arriving back at our facility, Maya looked inside bird’s mouth and found two more embedded pieces of of the Lion Fish’s spine, which she removed. Maya made sure that any and all material was cleared from the wound. Then she gave the heron emergency treatment with a rapid application of hot water and liquid soap, a Tetanus shot, pain medication, and antibiotics. They lubricated the birds eyes and also used eye ointment. Because Lion Fish spines are poisonous, the heron had breathing difficulties and semi paralysis. Maya was not sure if the bird was going to make it. Day after day, and night, after night they kept checking to make sure that the bird was still alive. He started to recovering in late afternoon on Wednesday. Thursday, January 5, he stood up and began to walk around. On Friday he ate on his own for the first time and then he started to try to fly. They released him on Saturday at 3:00 pm on Little Torch state road 4 A. Maya wants to thank all of their volunteers for being there and to give a special thanks to Tom and Lois Woosey for finding the heron and calling Florida Keys Wildlife Rescue. They also want to thank Big Pine Shipping for the donation of a special carton carrier that was put together for him. When they opened the box it was miraculous -- he was flying back to freedom over the skies of the Florida Keys. Tom Woosey and Maya Totman discovered that the Great White Heron had tried to swallow a poisonous 8 inch long lion fish. He helped hold the beak open while she managed to extract the lion fish from its throat. The lion fish measured 8 inches. She presenedt a Vernisage of her artwork this past Saturday, January 7, at The Gallery on Greene, 606 Greene St.in Key West. “Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, novelist, and memoirist Annie Dillard − best known for ‘Pilgrim at Tinker Creek,’ ‘Holy the Firm,’ and ‘Teaching a Stone to Talk’ − is also a talented and prolific painter,” writes Wall Street Journal art critic Ann Landi in the magazine Art News. “Largely self-taught, Dillard generally works in oil and gouache and always on a small scale, her canvases rarely more than 16 inches to a side. A self-portrait made when she was in her early thirties shows her wielding a brush and looking rather morose about it, but other works in the show, including some landscapes, reveal an ebullience and a sure sense of color and line.” Dillard is known for her keen observations of nature, and many of her works are dedicated to the land and sea that surround her at her seasonal abodes. Her homes in Key West, Cape Codand Virginia, as well as places she visits, are subjects of her artistry. Dillard’s landscapes depict, at times, an oriental stylization, perhaps influenced by her visit to Chinaas a U.S. Cultural Delegate in 1982. Works such as “TibetanVillage” and “Cape Cod Scene” use geometric forms evolving into the abstract. Of late Dillard has painted portraits of strong personalities such as Stanley McChrystal, a Sierra Leoneorphan, and Thelonius Monk. Her portrait of Monk depicts a solid, somber Monk in sienna and black on an olive background. According to Ann Landi, “Dillard’s voice, here, as in her writing, is very much her own: assured, perceptive and sometimes dazzling.” In conjunction with the 2012 Key West Literary Seminar, Dillard met art aficionados at The Gallery on Greene. Astrologically Yours #Z4ZMWJB#PHBSUt Aries: Don’t waste your time on limited vision, talk to an authority figure about the action you need to take to make your dream a reality. Sometimes one small piece of the puzzle is all you need to make the whole picture complete this can allow you to let go of past obligations seeing them for what they were and moving into the future with confidence and support. Taurus: Why must you insist on doing everything the hard way? Don’t you think you have paid your dues in that area and even if you don’t think about this, the people around you need your direction and you are mucking up the whole operation by trying to always fix everything just do what you do best so that everyone else can too. This is where you are now so adjust. Gemini: Talk’s cheap haven’t you heard? Those people who are giving you a spill of goods tell them to invest their money where their mouth is so you can produce and do the work that they say they love. If they take offense don’t worry about it their places will soon be filled with real investors who really do love what you do and you will have time and space to create. Cancer: As usual you are caught up in somebody else’s war and low and behold you don’t have all of the facts imagine that. When are you going to get this lesson and start accepting facts as facts and what you see is really what is happening. This is in the area of legalities the right to work health issues all of a personal nature. You can’t help someone if they lie to you. Leo: Sometimes it is not to your best interest to engage verbally or meet one on one especially if you are not detached enough to see clearly and accept without censor the situation for exactly what it is. You may need to surrender (I know you hate that word) to the fact that you must delegate authority to someone else so you can concentrate on the real issues at hand expansion and organization. Virgo: You had a dream, you did the research, your intention was clear, you directed the action, then began the work. Did you think it would be easy? Yes, I know it all looks good on paper and in the Ideal then you bring your brain children out into the world and all of a sudden it all gets messy, Honey that is life. Hire good people forget about throwing in the towel for whatever reason if you do you will regret it take responsibility for what is yours. Libra: The best thing you can do right now is to decide exactly what you are responsible for and what is not to your best interest. You have been procrastinating again thinking that someone else would have your best interest at heart and take care of the details. Is it any wonder that chaos has set in and nothing is as it seems? Time to decide what you really want and do something constructive to get it waiting is over stop fluffing it. Scorpio: Time you got serious about what you want to do and made a commitment of some kind. It is a good time for negotiations about property, said I do or I don’t and got on with it sign on the dotted line cut your losses settle all bets and got to work on your very important personal projects leaving the past pettiness behind along with the people who were the source of it. New people are on their way and it is time you secured your base. Sagittarius: Making decisions about what to do with a windfall of cash or the success of a hard earned project should not be hard to do as long as you keep this in mind don’t gamble if you can’t afford to lose it. Don’t loan it out if there is no guarantee of a good return. Have some fun with it and do some of those things you said you would if it ever happened. Find a middle ground between expanding and holding on compromise play some and save a little. Capricorn: Isn’t it wonderful to plan things? Especially when they have a good firm base and you are in control. Ideas that you had earlier last year but were put on the back burner for what ever reason move forward and you can feel all kinds of wonderful feelings and financial returns. After all of the hard knocks of last year that you stoically moved through with only determination and will I think it is about time you were rewarded don’t you? Aquarius: Funny how things work out, endings, beginnings, saying goodbye to the past and hello to the future is never an easy enterprise but it is necessary for growth to happen this is such a time. In your area of jointly held assets there can seem to be a never ending stream of hidden problems coming out of the closet for you to deal with try not to make promises if you do not know for sure that you can keep them it may not be your call to do so. Pisces: Sometimes it is easier just to let go and let someone else deal with all the details for a change. This would seem to be such a time. There is all the things you have set up that seem to be doing well and the only fly in the ointment can be that your partners are not getting what they thought they were and what they did get they are having to earn. Don’t worry about it allow yourself to simply feel the love around you enjoy your friends relax. The theme for this week is focus, intention, direction, action& manifestation into the physical world planting the seeds for successfully accomplishing your goals that were only a dream before you decided to make them reality. I hope you find some guidance here for your particular question. conch color the florida keys 47 photographic chronicle Office Surgery for Carpal tunnel, Trigger finger, Dupuytren’s Orthopedic Surgery 1111 12th St.#212, Key West J.W.
