relieve employees at the local facility.
Just like many past recipients of the award,
Kathleen was humbled and more than a little
uncomfortable with the honour.
“I still don’t think I deserve it,” she stated.
“I don’t think it’s right, but I guess I can’t
protest.”
Kathleen was nominated for the award by
Wendy Thienes and Mona McFadyen.
“Many people think Kathleen ‘works’ at the
Centre as an employee because she is here so
much,” said Thienes, the director of the
Grand Coteau Heritage and Cultural Centre.
“However, she is strictly a volunteer.”
Kathleen conducts most of her research
utilizing the collection of Shaunavon
Standards dating back to 1913, and compiles
information relevant to many topic areas
Every member of Shaunavon’s exclusive
Citizen of the Year Club have all been dedicated volunteers.
But this year’s recipient of the prestigious
honour - Kathleen East - may have brought
the notion of volunteer service to a new
level.
Since her retirement as a math teacher at
Shaunavon High School in 2000, Kathleen
has turned volunteerism into a near full time
job.
Her most visible contributions have come
at the Grand Coteau Heritage & Cultural
Centre where she spends as many as 20
hours each week in the research department.
She also works many Saturday afternoons to

and responds to external research requests.
She is a stickler for details and is always
thorough in the information she provides.
In many ways, Kathleen serves as the community’s historian.
“Referred to as ‘our walking history book,’
Kathleen is able to respond to questions
about Shaunavon history and is always a
wealth of information,” said Thienes. “She
always goes the extra mile when answering
requests to ensure thoroughness.”
“Shaunavon has never had a history book,”
said Kathleen, explaining her reasons for
wanting to preserve the community’s history. “People have tried to do it but dropped it
because it’s too much. It’s not a path anyone
is willing to go down anymore.”
“But it’s a history that is important to keep
and pass down.”
Many families have been assisted by
Kathleen in their search for family history,
thus providing continued connections to the
community. She has a particular interest in
the newspaper collection as her uncle Alex
Sharp and grandfather William Sharp were
owners of the paper in some of the earliest
decades.
Kathleen says there were several factors
that led to her involvement with helping
gather historical information at the museum, including a close friendship with Ingrid
Cazakoff, the Grand Coteau Centre’s former
Curator who is now the CEO of Heritage
Saskatchewan.
“I got involved for several reasons,” said
Kathleen. “Number one, because of my family background, it was something that I
found very interesting.”
“Number two, after I retired from teaching, I was looking for something to do with
my time,” she added. “And this was something I really enjoyed.”
Initially, Kathleen worked to preserve
details from the early editions of The
Shaunavon Standard, which date back to
1913 but were in deteriorating condition.
(Today, the newspapers are stored in a specially built climate controlled room in the
basement of the museum.)
“After about three years, I thought I would
do a bit more (than just the early years of the
town) and started writing things down as it
pertained to the town or businesses,” she
said. “I have about 20 years left to search
through.”
“I knew that I couldn’t do families, unless
there was a special request from someone,”
she added.
In 2013, Shaunavon’s Centennial year,
Kathleen provided additional guidance and
Page 2 - Mar 17, 2015
information valuable to heritage plans for
community events. She regularly provided
support in developing articles for the
Centennial countdown column in The
Shaunavon Standard, and leads discussions
at many of the popular Senior’s Coffee Chats
at the museum. She was also a member of
the Centennial Quilt committee and served
as the Gardening & Flower judge for the Old
Tyme Fair.
She was also involved in the planning of
local activities connected with Saskatchewan’s
Centennial in 2005.
Kathleen attended the University of
Saskatchewan where she obtained a Bachelor
of Science degree with a major in
Mathematics and a minor in Geography, and
her teaching certificate. Kathleen returned
to Shaunavon in 1970 and spent the next 30
years teaching: 10 years at the Shaunavon
Public School teaching Grade 8 & 9 math
and 20 years at Shaunavon High School
teaching math, geography, science, social
studies, guidance and study skills.
Kathleen had always been willing to spend
many early mornings, noon hours and after
school hours to help a student understand
their math, and continues to provide tutoring to students seeking her help.
Throughout her teaching career, Kathleen
dedicated many hours to extra curricular
activities including organizing Christmas
concerts and coaching a variety of sports. At
the High School, her main involvement was
coaching the Senior Girls Volleyball Team.
Thirty years of coaching have given her a
large collection of tournament medals. Most
recently she is volunteering at the school
again teaching Bridge to a group of students
over the lunch hour once a week.
Kathleen is a member of All Saint’s
Anglican Church and regularly takes her
turn at driving the Courtesy Van. She teaches bridge lessons to anyone interested and
plays bridge every Monday and Thursday in
the Duplicate Bridge Club. Her lessons lately
even includes some local youth who have
taken an interest in bridge.
Kathleen also enjoys cards and is a regular
patron of arts and culture in Shaunavon. She
has taught gardening classes in the past,
wrote gardening columns for the paper and
participated in the tourism committee. She
is still an active spectator of school sports.
She was a member of the Heritage
Subcommittee for Shaunavon’s Centennial
in 2013.
Kathleen has two children, Kurt and Kent
who both reside in Meadow Lake and have
given her five grandchildren: Preslee &

Crawford, Kash, Linkoln and London.
Kathleen is the daughter of George and
Billie Keturakis. Kathleen was born and
raised in Shaunavon, as were her parents
and both sets of grandparents who came
here between 1909-1920.
“It’s something that’s important to me,”
said Kathleen. “Having grown up in
Shaunavon, a lot of the names mean something to me.”
Kathleen has a green thumb and her hobby
of growing flowers is a beautiful sight. Many
school children have toured her garden
throughout the years. She has worked at the
Shaunavon Greenhouse and worked toward
completion of her Master Gardener status,
through attendance of courses at the U of S
each year. She has organized local garden
tours and compiled slide show presentations
and gardening classes which she has given at
the museum and neighbouring communities.
Kathleen loves looking into Shaunavon’s
history. She knew Everett and Ruth Baker
personally. As a child, Kathleen and her
maternal grandparents (who were good
friends with the Baker’s) spent many hours
at Baker’s Park (Pine Creek Park), or in her
grandparent’s yard where Everett took many
pictures.
“Kathleen East is a proud Shaunavonite,”
stated Thienes. Her dedicated service as a
teacher is exemplary. Even after her retirement from her formal teaching career, she
sought opportunities to contribute to the
community.”
With no formal history book, Shaunavon
is very privileged to have such a keeper of
knowledge like Kathleen. As Shaunavon
moves into its second century, the contribution of this individual is paramount to our
collective memory as a community, and we
want to let Kathleen know that her whole
community believes that our history is
important.
The Citizen of the Year Award is sponsored by the Shaunavon Chamber of
Commerce. The selection committee, however, is comprised of an independent and
anonymous group of local residents.
Once again, all nominations submitted
this year were for very worthy candidates
and the decision was difficult as always. The
Chamber of Commerce encourages nominators to continue to submit their nominations in the future so that in time all of the
worthy citizens will be honoured.

Blarney Stones
“Every St. Patrick’s Day when we were growing up, my grandmother would have us over
to make Blarney Stones, pound cake cubes
dipped in frosting and rolled in dry roasted
peanuts. This became a tradition we considered part of our Irish family heritage.”

1/2 cup milk, or as needed
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 cups dry roasted salted peanuts,
finely chopped
1 pound cake, cut into bize-size
cubes
Pour confectioners’ sugar in a
bowl. Gradually add milk, whisking constantly, until mixture has a
thin frosting consistency; whisk in
vanilla extract.
Place chopped peanuts in a bowl.
Line a flat surface or a plate with
waxed paper.
Dip 1 pound cake cube in frosting and roll cube in peanuts; place
on wax paper to dry. Repeat with

FOR RELEASE MONDAY, MARCH 16, 2015
BY FRANCIS DRAKE
..Your.Daily.Horoscope..
For Tuesday, March 17, 2015
ARIES
(March 21 to April 19)
If you think someone behind the
scenes is criticizing you, you might be
right. Trust your instincts. And don’t second-guess yourself.
TAURUS
(April 20 to May 20)
Someone older or more experienced
might discourage you today. Don’t let
this get you down. If it’s constructive
criticism, use it. If not, ignore it.
GEMINI
(May 21 to June 20)
This is a poor day to ask for permission or approval from an authority figure, especially bosses, VIPs and the
police. Quite likely, the answer will be,
“Talk to the hand.”
CANCER
(June 21 to July 22)
Avoid controversial subjects like politics and religion today, because people
will be critical and negative. No one
wants consensus. They just want to criticize. (Run away!)
LEO
(July 23 to Aug. 22)
Disputes about shared property, taxes,
debt, inheritances and insurance matters
might arise today. Someone might pull
rank or throw their weight around. Wait
a day.
VIRGO
(Aug. 23 to Sept. 22)
Difficulties with partners and close
friends might arise today. Perhaps someone is critical of or opposes you. It looks
like you have to agree to disagree today.
LIBRA
(Sept. 23 to Oct. 22)
Relations with co-workers might be
strained today. Nevertheless, your powers of concentration are good, and you
will not overlook details. You won’t
mind routine work.
SCORPIO
(Oct. 23 to Nov. 21)
Quarrels with romantic partners are
par for the course today. Dealings with
children might require more patience,
because things are involved and a bit
tedious. Cope as best you can.
SAGITTARIUS
(Nov. 22 to Dec. 21)
Family discussions will be serious
today and primarily concerned with
future plans and practical matters. In
particular, people might want to discuss
how to do repairs.
CAPRICORN
(Dec. 22 to Jan. 19)
Make an effort to be positive today,
because it’s easy to fall into worry mode.
Remember that your glass is half-full,
not half-empty. (This is assuming you
have a glass.)
AQUARIUS
(Jan. 20 to Feb. 18)
Financial matters will be a bit grim
today. Why is there always so much
month left at the end of the money? We
all feel this from time to time.
PISCES
(Feb. 19 to March 20)
Today Mercury in your sign is at odds
with stern Saturn. This can make you
critical of others or nervous for approval.
Just relax and lighten up. Be comfortable
in your own skin.
YOU BORN TODAY You like to be
inspired by a meaningful cause. You are
creative and expressive, and capable of
adapting to a new situation. In fact, you
are attracted to anything new and fresh.
This is one reason you will love this
year, because it is the beginning of a
fresh, new nine-year cycle for you. Open
any door! Start a new business activity.

5 healthy herbs:
It’s easy to grow
them! Freshen up your meals with herbs straight
out of the garden or the pot on your windowsill.
1. Thyme
Long valued for its antiseptic properties, thyme is
also an antioxidant and is great for your belly: it
can aid in digestion and may help treat stomach
ulcers. With a slightly pungent, spicy, clove-like
flavour, thyme is as easy to use as it is to grow. Be
sure to plant in lightweight soil like sandy loam
to allow easy drainage. Thyme is what Tremblay
calls a “dry herb” and likes its soil to dry between
waterings. According to Tremblay, thyme can be
used with all meats, vegetables, casseroles and
soups. Keep in mind that the herb has a strong
flavour, so a little will do.
2. Rosemary
“Herbs give a taste of authenticity to food,” says
Tremblay. Rosemary’s piney, resinous flavour
with a hint of lemon makes it ideal for roasts, especially lamb. It works well with basil or thyme
and is also used in baking cookies, biscuits and
breads. Like other herbs, rosemary should be
grown in full sun to partial shade in a clay pot.
Do not overwater -- “herbs don’t like wet feet,”
says Tremblay. If you are using fresh leaves, be
sure to chop them finely because they are tough.
Rosemary dries well and is worth keeping around
because it may help alleviate high blood pressure

and headaches. Some people even chew the leaves
while driving at night because the herb is said to
be a stimulant.
3. Basil
Tremblay describes basil as spicy, sweet and clovelike. It is a staple in Italian tomato dishes and mixes well with eggs, soups, sauces and dips. Basil is
said to aid digestion, lower blood sugar levels and
have a calming effect on people, so try using it in
a home-cooked comfort meal for someone going
through trying times. Basil should be brought indoors on chilly nights because it is more vulnerable to frost than other herbs. Tremblay advises
growers to be careful when picking basil. “There
will be a little joint, a little baby basil growing in
the armpit of the stem,” she says. Leave this part
because it stimulates the plant to make more
leaves, providing you with an abundant supply for
the next time you’re craving gazpacho or pasta.

4. Tarragon
Tarragon has a subtle licorice flavour, but it is discreet enough that even licorice-haters will enjoy
it in a mixed-greens salad with other fresh herbs.
Drizzle a simple dressing over a mixture of basil, tarragon and chives for a fresh summer salad.
Tarragon is beneficial to digestion and constipation and is also considered a mild sedative, and
therefore good for insomnia. Its sweet taste also
works well with fish and chicken and is widely
used in French cooking. One of the only dishes it
will not work well with is soups, because it is too
pungent. Tarragon is difficult to grow from seed,
so this is one herb you might want to purchase
from a nursery.
5. Cilantro
Fresh cilantro has a strong, sharp taste and is
widely used in Mexican, Caribbean and Asian
cooking. Tremblay compares its flavour to citrus and sage. It’s a “very distinctive taste that you
can get easily,” she says. While its unique flavour
forces many Europeans to turn up their noses, cilantro’s health benefits place it high on the list of
healthy herbs: it is said to lower bad cholesterol,
lower blood sugar and aid with digestion. For a
regular supply, cilantro needs to be planted about
every two weeks. If you prefer to dry the leaves,
keep in mind that they will not retain a strong
flavour like other herbs, but if you grind them
up, you will have a good stock of coriander (the
dried, ground form of cilantro).
