RCMP AND GOVERNMENT TO PARTNER
ON SAFE DRIVING CAMPAIGN
gov.ca - During the week of June 20, the
Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure
is teaming up with the RCMP to educate
the public on the importance of slowing to
60 km/hr when passing emergency workers.
”We are pleased to partner with the
RCMP to raise awareness about the importance of obeying speed laws and
driving attentively when passing first responders,” Highways and Infrastructure
Minister Nancy Heppner said. “First responders are working to keep us safe; we
need to do our part to ensure their workplace is as safe as possible.”
Drivers in Saskatchewan are required
to slow to 60km/hr in both directions on
two-lane highways and both lanes travelling the same direction on four-lane highways when passing vehicles with their
lights activated. This includes emergency
vehicles (law enforcement, fire trucks and
ambulances) and tow trucks, as well as
Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure
and municipal equipment.
Last year, 478 speeders were ticketed
during two traffic safety events. Fines
start at $210 for speeding 10 km/hr faster
than the maximum 60 km/hr.
“Our goal is to prevent close calls and
disastrous situations from happening,”
RCMP Southeast Combined Traffic Services Staff Sgt. Pete Garvey said. “Part-

Sask. carbon capture plant
doubles the price of power
cbc.ca - A wind power proponent says
the latest SaskPower rate increases may
be just the beginning of increasing electrical rates in the province.
SaskPower is asking for two rate increases this year — five per cent this summer and another five per cent in January.
President of SaskWind James Glennie
says a report from Canada’s parliamentary budget office shows carbon capture
technology will double the price of power
generated from the project.
Glennie says SaskPower’s wholesale
cost of power is about $60 per megawatt
hour. The report pegs the cost of removing carbon dioxide through carbon capture at Boundary Dam Unit 3 at about the
same price.
“So essentially what the report is saying
is if you, obviously, add on $60 a megawatt hour for carbon capture that is effectively doubling the wholesale price of
power,” Glennie said.
The minister responsible for SaskPower,
Bill Boyd, says he hasn’t read the report
by the parliamentary budget office, but he
says reducing greenhouse gas emissions
isn’t cheap.

“It’s something that I think the people of Saskatchewan are aware of,” Boyd
said. “They know very well that the cost
of mitigation in these areas is expensive.
The cost of any kind of other alternative
sources of energy are going to be expensive as well.”
But Glennie says the price of wind
power has plummeted in recent years, to
a level that makes it comparable with natural gas.
He says his group, SaskWind, will be
announcing a combined wind and solar
project in Saskatchewan’s southwest in
the next week or two.
Glennie says the $80-million project
will be community owned, with shares
sold around the province.
SaskPower notes that it, too, is working
to add more wind and solar projects to
the province’s power generation fleet.
The government has promised that by
2030, half of its power will come from renewable sources.

• Cover up. Wear light-coloured, long-sleeved shirts, pants, and
a wide-brimmed hat made from breathable fabric. When you
buy sunglasses, make sure they provide protection against both
UVA and UVB rays.
• Limit your time in the sun. Keep out of the sun and heat
between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. When your shadow is shorter than
you, the sun is very strong. Look for places with lots of shade,
like a park with big trees, partial roofs, awnings, umbrellas or
gazebo tents. Always take an umbrella to the beach.
• Use the UV Index forecast. Tune into local radio and TV
stations or check online for the UV index forecast in your area.
When the UV index is 3 or higher, wear protective clothing,
sunglasses and sunscreen.
• Use sunscreen. Put sunscreen on when the UV index is 3 or
more.
• Drink plenty of cool liquids (especially water) before you feel
thirsty. If sunny days are also hot and humid, stay cool and
hydrated to avoid heat illness. Dehydration (not having enough
fluids in your body) is dangerous, and thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration.
• Avoid using tanning beds. If you do use them, understand the
risks and learn how to protect yourself.

ARIES
(March 21 to April 19)
It’s impossible to meet the demands of
home and family as well as the demands
of your job and your career today
because of the Full Moon. Just cope as
best you can.
TAURUS
(April 20 to May 20)
This is an accident-prone day for your
sign because of the high emotions due to
the Full Moon today. The key to avoiding an accident is to stay mellow and
calm.
GEMINI
(May 21 to June 20)
Disputes about money, shared property and inheritances might arise today.
Wait a few days, and this conflict will
diminish considerably. (Full Moon
today.)
CANCER
(June 21 to July 22)
Today the only Full Moon opposite
your sign all year is taking place. This is
why relations with partners and close
friends are so testy and challenging!
Mum’s the word.
LEO
(July 23 to Aug. 22)
Be easygoing and understanding with
co-workers today, because today’s Full
Moon energy puts everyone on edge. A
little patience can go a long way.
VIRGO
(Aug. 23 to Sept. 22)
Parents should be patient with their
kids today because of the Full Moon
energy. Meanwhile, this same advice
applies to romantic partners. Oh yeah.
LIBRA
(Sept. 23 to Oct. 22)
A family member might make
demands on your time today; nevertheless, you have to focus on work. This is
a tough choice, and you have to make it.
Sunscreen safety tips
• Choose a high SPF. Protect your health by using a
broad-spectrum sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF)
of at least 15. The sunscreen should also say “broad-spectrum”
on the label, to screen out most of the UVA and UVB rays.
• Look for “water resistant.” Look for claims on the label that the product stays on
better in water (water resistant, very water resistant).
• Read application instructions. For best results, be sure to follow the instructions
on the product label.
• Use lots of sunscreen. Use the recommended amount of sunscreen.
• Apply it early. Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before you go outside; reapply 20
minutes after going outside and at least every 2 hours after that. Use a generous
amount. Cover exposed areas generously, including ears, nose, the tops of feet and
backs of knees.
• Reapply often. Reapply sunscreen often to get the best possible protection especially if you are swimming or sweating heavily.
• Protect yourself. Sunscreen and insect repellents can be used safely together.
Apply the sunscreen first, then the insect repellent.
• Sunscreens and babies. Do not put sunscreen on babies less than 6 months of
age. Keep them out of the sun and heat as their skin and bodies are much more
sensitive than an adult’s.
• Test for an allergic reaction. Before using any tanning product on you or your
child check for an allergic reaction, especially if you have sensitive skin. Apply it
to a small patch of skin on the inner forearm for several days in a row. If the skin
turns red or otherwise reacts, change products.

SCORPIO
(Oct. 23 to Nov. 21)
Travel plans might be stressed. People
are on edge because of the Full Moon
today. Avoid controversial subjects like
politics, religion and racial issues.
SAGITTARIUS
(Nov. 22 to Dec. 21)
This is not a good day to address
financial disputes or arguments about
inheritances and shared property. Wait
until the Full Moon is over. (Even
tomorrow is a better day.)
CAPRICORN
(Dec. 22 to Jan. 19)
Today the only Full Moon in your sign
all year is taking place. This is why you
feel so much emotion within you! Take
caution about overreacting with others.
(So easy to do.)
AQUARIUS
(Jan. 20 to Feb. 18)
Be patient with co-workers and clients
today, because everyone can feel the Full
Moon energy. Tomorrow is a much easier day. Just coast today.
PISCES
(Feb. 19 to March 20)
Romantic partners might be at odds
today because of the Full Moon energy.
However, even friends might have disputes. Stay mellow, because this is so
temporary.
YOU BORN TODAY People like you.
You know how to produce an emotional
reaction in others by being rousing and
enthusiastic. Great news! You are now
heading into one of the most powerful
years of your life — a time of accumulation. This is a good year to buy and sell.
Whatever you have done in the past will
now ripen because it’s your time of
fruition. At last!

• The revelation that his marriage of 30 years had disintegrated because of his wife’s infidelity came as a rude shock, like a surcharge at a
formerly surcharge free ATM.
• The little boat gently drifted across the pond exactly the way a bowling ball wouldn’t.
• McBride fell 12 stories, hitting the pavement like a hefty bag filled
with vegetable soup.
• From the attic came an unearthly howl. The whole scene had an
eerie surreal quality, like when you’re on vacation in another city and
Jeopardy comes on at 7 pm instead of 7:30.
• Her hair glistened in the rain like nose hair after a sneeze.
• The hailstones leaped up off the pavement, just like maggots when

you fry them in hot grease.
• Long separated by cruel fate, the star crossed lovers raced across a
grassy field toward each other like two freight trains, one having left
Cleveland at 6:36 p.m. traveling at 55 mph, the other from Topeka at
4:19 p.m. at a speed of 35 mph.
• John and Mary had never met. They were like two hummingbirds
who had also never met.
• He fell for her like his heart was a mob informant and she was the
east river.
• Even in his last years, grandpappy had a mind like a steel trap, only
one that had been left out so long, it had rusted shut.
• Shots rang out, as shots are wont to do.
• The plan was simple, like my brother-in-law Phil. But unlike Phil,
this plan just might work.
• The young fighter had a hungry look, the kind you get from not
eating for a while.
• He was as lame as a duck. Not the metaphorical lame duck, either,
but a real duck that was actually lame. Maybe from stepping on a
landmine or something.
• The Ballerina rose gracefully en pointe and extended one slender leg
behind her, like a dog at a fire hydrant.
• It was an American tradition, like fathers chasing kids with power
tools.
• He was deeply in love. When she spoke, he thought he heard bells, as
if she were a garbage truck backing up.
• She was as easy as the TV guide crossword.
• Her eyes were like limpid pools, only they had forgotten to put in
any pH cleanser.
• It hurt the way your tongue hurts after you accidentally staple it to
the wall.
