Message From Carine & Perry
there and for all your kind words and lovely presents of course! We
have been eating cake for weeks after the party, and now on a diet as
we're not the fit athletes as used to be! (Well, Carine is the unfit
one, and Perry had all the cake so it's not completely true what I just
wrote!). I just wanted to write a little note to you all and hope to
write a bit more for the next newsletter about thow things are going in
Holland. At the moment things are just so hectic, with me (CvS) working
in Amsterdam, still doing some work in Manchester and with all the
enormously stressful issues related to selling and buying houses and
the fact that we will be moving next month etc etc.. We're completely
in the middle of it all at the moment, so it just feels very strange
and as if I (Carine) have got no home anymore!
Anyway, I will keep this short. So thank you all, and good luck MTC!

Dear Clubmember,
As most of you know, Carine and
Perry’s announcement earlier in the
year that they would be leaving the
club made us realise that for too long
MTC had existed on the goodwill of just a few people
who were being put upon more and more.
A serious amount of hard work has gone on behind the
scenes to plug the gaps that Carine & Perry left, and the
major ones have now been resolved. Dean has taken
over the running of the Newsletter and Nick Thomas
(with help from Chris Clarke) has taken over the
Wednesday night track session. Swimming at the Aquatics has been covered on a temporary basis but we may
be looking for cover in the near future, initially for Monday nights but at some stage also for Thursday nights.
We have also taken on John Sloan to conduct an overall
review of our coaching proposition and to begin a role of
Coaching Coordinator. Whilst the review has not yet
taken place I think it will show that we are still very vul-
nerable in terms of coaching resources, and whilst initial
gaps have been plugged we could be in trouble again if
one of our key coaches had to leave.
If any of you have coaching aspirations then now is the
time to let John (or Nick ) know as we can never have
enough support. Please do this ASAP as courses are
few and far between. Please also let John/Nick know of
any ideas you may have for future coaching (eg Brick
sessions, velodrome sessions).
I have just returned from the Tour d’Etape which was
superb, well worth a go if you get the opportunity. Towards the end of the ride me and Dave Preece witnessed Dave Harper have a very nasty crash, not the
kind of crash we would want to see again as we both
thought we may have lost Mad-Dog for good. Thankfully
we hadn’t, and he was OKish apart from cuts, brusies, a
bit of shock and minor damage to the bike. But every
cloud has a silver lining and I am delighted to inform
those of you that have ridden with Mad-Dog this year
that his abominable blue and orange shorts were sufficiently damaged in the crash that they had to be putdown, never to haunt the Sunday bike rides again.

STRATFORD SPRINT TRIATHLON 8th MAY
This event is a good warm up for the season even if it is a bit of trek down to Stratford –upon -Avon.
….”Stratford is a well run event. The bike section is flat apart from a small rise about 3 miles from home
and the run is pretty much on trail. Get there early for best parking and ease of transferring bike and kit.
Don’t forget to pay and display. Several did and that might spoil a good race”…Andy Bathe.
Also Steve Collins writes … “I decided early in the season to do the Stratford Triathlon as it’s a good
place to take a girlfriend for the weekend. There are some good pubs in Stratford on the Saturday followed by a pub lunch on the Sunday. I only knew Chris Clarke from MTC who was doing Stratford, last
year there were four of us including the editor Dean Frost. Also last year they had the coolest scoreboard
that updated as each athlete completed the course and showed the placings by age category - that was
Page 5
particularly helpful for Dean and myself. Awoke to blue skies with a slight breeze. The race is 400m swim
in an indoor pool, 25k bike around Stratford followed by a cross-country run of 5k. Started badly, thought
the water was cloudy, realised after half a length I didn’t have my swimming goggles on, relieved to find
them around my neck. Bike was a lot better 40 minutes for 25k that was 4 minutes quicker than last year.
Didn’t feel good for the run but completed it in 23 minutes- 3 minutes slower than last year. So 1 hour 12
minutes overall – 12th position in my age group. Three minutes quicker would have put me 2nd!! Chris
Clarke finished in 1 Hour 8 minutes but was hampered by traffic on the Motorway to such an extent he arrived with only minutes to spare and arrived at the poolside 5 seconds before he was meant to start. Finale to the day – a £60 fine at 9.00am on a Sunday morning. – worth it”.

JAN ROGERS QUALIFIES AT THE ELLESMERE TRIATHLON SHROPSHIRE 12th JUNE
Quite a big turnout from MTC members as always, to what is a very
popular national event. This year it was the first Age Group World
Championship Qualifier attracting a very strong field. After a heat wave
the previous week, it was a dismal day and the temperatures dropped
about 10C, making it a bit chilly on the bike. Congratulations to Jan
Rogers who’s strong performance booked her place for Honolulu.

MIKE SHACKCLOTH QUALIFIES AT THE DAMBUSTER TRIATHLON (RUTLAND) 25th JUNE
Mike was unable to take part at Ellesmere due to work commitments , but had no problem qualifying for
the World Champs at his first attempt , coming 1st in his age category and a superb 2nd place overall. I
(editor) along with many others found the “undulating” and longer bike course very challenging, on yet
another wet drizzly day. The run times were a bonus though. In fact it must have been shorter than
9.6K.

MTC MEMBERS CELEBRATE SUCCESS
AT ROYLES DEVA TRIATHLON 3rd JULY
The Deva Standard and Sprint Triathlons organized by Chester-tri each
year keeps going from strength to
strength. This year it hosted the North
West Championships as well as being a BTA Grand Prix ranking event.
The swim course in the River Dee
and run course passing over the
Holly Oaks Bridge on the Chester
Groves also makes this a great event
for spectators, ensuring that the competitors get plenty of support throughout the event. The bike route along
country roads relatively uncluttered
by traffic also adds to it being one of the best courses in the UK. Mike Sackcloth may have been disappointed with his 2nd place, after finishing first last year , but hey, he was a minute and a half faster this
time. Other MTC members also came away as North West Champions (besides Mike) , namely Mark Abbott (MI) and Jan Rogers (FH). Special mention to Steve Birkitt who must have taken about 5 mins of his
PB and Shaun Walsh who had a superb 2.33 in his first ever triathlon

MTC’s Boundary Breeze Sprint Triathlon Sunday July 17th
Once again the Boundary Breeze proved very popular as it hosted the North West Regional
Sprint Triathlon Championships, attracting a record field of around 250 competitors . Unfortunately, I couldn’t be there to give you a blow by blow account of the race . Congratulations
to this years Male and Female winners and NW Champions, Garry Prosser of Crazy Frog
(Bing! Bing! Bing!...whatever) in a time of 1:03:04 and Charlotte Tompkins of Tri Preston, in
1:14:32. This years race organizer Freesia Day reported that the event couldn’t have gone
better, and deserves our CONGRATULATIONS in making it such a success. Of course a
BIG THANKYOU also goes out to all our club members who gave their time in organizing
the event both before and on the day. SPECIAL THANKS also go to Northern Wave for
adding their support on the day and Wrecsam Tri for the providing the swim buoys and bike
racking. Below, I have provided a summary of the race results, the full results can be found
on the MTC website.

Saturday 6th August 2005 at the National Watersports Centre, Holme Pierrepoint,
Nottingham.
Meeting
Most people will be arriving at the on-site campsite on the Friday. If you can't find anyone, I'll be around from about
7pm (hopefully), so give me a call, and I'll let you know where we are (assuming I can find everyone!). If you are arriving on the Saturday, and have not already met up with everyone in the camp site, look out for the MTC gazebo on the
race site for where to congregate.
Race times
There are two waves this year:Female, Male Vet and mixed teams will start at 9am.
Males will start at 2pm.
Registration
Either myself or your team captain will register the teams - registration is open Friday 6pm to 8.30pm.
For the 9am wave, registration is also possible on Saturday from 7am to 8.30am.
For the 2pm wave, registration is also possible on Saturday from 12.45pm to 1.45pm.
Your BTA cards (where applicable) will be needed for this. Please can you therefore arrange for your BTA card to be
passed to your team captain in advance so that you can be registered (otherwise there's an additional £4 day membership of the BTA). Non-BTA members have paid £4 up front - I will give all the £4's to your team captains to cover
the day licences. Your team captain is shown below.
Directions:
From the North - Turn off at Junction 26 of the M1, then A610 and A52 towards Grantham, following signs to the National Water Sports Centre.
From the South - Turn off at Junction 24 of the M1, and take the A453 to Nottingham, and then the A5 towards Grantham, following signs to the National Water Sports Centre. If anyone wants any more detailed instructions from something like multimap, postcode to search under is NG12 2LU.
Camping:
Camping is available onsite, and a number of people are travelling down on the Friday night, and staying until the
Sunday - as long as the weather is okay, we'll be having bar-b-qs on the Friday and Saturday nights. More detailed
information is available on www.pacesetterevents.com For those also interested, there's a sprint race on the Sunday
at 12:00, details are on the above web site.
This year we have 6 teams in the relays - Hopefully this should cover any questions, but if not feel free to email me
(JMDabbs@hotmail.com), or give me a call on 07754 202348.Thanks to all the team captains for their time in sorting
team orders and registering etc. See you all on the 5th / 6th, for a great weekend!

As some of you know, I have replaced Perry and Carine at the track on Wednesday evenings. They established the session several years ago with good reason: to improve your running. You need to train at
specific intensities with specific aims in mind. My job is to carry on the good work and develop the session
further. To begin with I want to increase the number of MTC members attending the session. Of around
20 people currently training, only 60% are from MTC. This is from around 200 members!!
However, I understand there are several reasons some people avoid track training:
1) Everyone else is faster than me:
There are runners of all abilities, and anyway, what if they are faster? You will gradually improve.
2) I get injured
Then you’re running too fast too soon. You will be given a specific pace to run at based on your current
fitness level.
3) I don’t need to sprint in a triathlon:
You won’t be sprinting. All sessions involve running at intensities relevant to 5 and 10km with specific
rest periods.
4) I don’t know anyone:
Neither did most of the current runners until they turned up.
5) I do speed work on my own:
Is it the right intensity with the correct rest periods? Are you progressing? Are you enjoying it? The session goes much quicker in a group environment.
So there’s no valid reason why you should miss this session. It’s not too late to start interval training this
season, so I hope to see you every Wednesday, 6.30ish at Longford Park, Stretford. £2 on the door, £1 to
coach.
Brick Training
All triathletes train for swimming, cycling, and running, but how many train for triathlon. When was the last
time you did a session involving turbo reps at race intensity followed by a fast transition and then running
at race intensity?
This is a vital session for triathletes, which I’m now addressing with brick training sessions at Longford
Park on selected Saturdays at 10.15am.
The format is simple. You bring your turbo, bike, and appropriate kit, as you would on race day. The turbos are set up next to the track (or indoors if wet) and the session then involves bike reps at threshold or
above, fast transitions, run reps on the track at the same intensity and then a spin recovery. Then repeat.
The session lasts around 60-75min, includes spinning and single leg drills - which we all need - and is biased towards cycling, with 60-70% of the session on the bike. Every triathlete needs to attend this session. Dates will be posted on the MTC training forum, but check the day before to confirm Trafford AC
haven’t hired the track out at late notice.
I have also negotiated a deal with SABAR to make it possible for everyone to attend this session by offering 15% off turbos and heart rate monitors, when producing a session flyer (available on Wednesdays at
the track). I can’t do anymore to help you! For this session to succeed, you need to attend. £3 on the
door.
Any questions ring me on 07968 140 256

Manchester Triathlon Training Weekend 1st – 3rd April 2005
17 members of MTC attended this years training weekend, and once again we managed to prove that hard training doesn’t get in
the way of hard drinking.
Friday night was the usual laid back affair, with people arriving throughout the late afternoon / early evening, and about half the group decided to build up an appetite for
some food by going for a run around Ladybower reservoir. Everyone then convened in
the Anglers Arms for some food, drinks and the usual banter until they stopped serving,
and then returned to the Farm for some more drinking.
Despite the best efforts of Jason and his Black Bush whisky the night before, everyone
was up early on Saturday, for a cycle around the peaks, in most cases fuelled up by
Dean’s cauldron of porridge. Two groups of riders set off on different routes, but all
enjoyed the ‘pleasures’ of the Edale Road. Some even feigned a toilet stop at the bottom, just to have a rest before the long slog up the hill (you know who you are), others
feigned the chain coming off for a rest (hmm, that’ll be me then). The early mist was
quickly burnt off by the sun, to make for a pleasant ride, with everything going oh so
smooth until Steve C managed to snap 5 spokes (one too many kebabs loaded onto the
back wheel eh Steve?). Some improvised roadside maintenance allowed Steve to at
least return to Hathersage on his bike, and was a great excuse to inspect the local hostelries rather than train. Everyone met for lunch and plenty of home made cakes in Hathersage, before either setting off back to the Farm, or continue cycling, the hard core
managing 70+ miles of hilly riding during the day. Those returning in time had a quick
trot to Ladybower and back to loosen the legs up after the days riding.
Page 14
Jason cooked an amazing chilli for 17
very hungry triathletes (thanks for that
Jason, top scran) which was well and
truly appreciated by everyone after their
days efforts, all washed down by plenty
of beer and wine. The night was then
helped along by early birthday celebrations for Clio, and the Busty Boob cake
was consumed with the usual double entendres, before the kitchen then improvised as a dance floor for those so inclined. Plenty more booze was consumed before Dave Preece announced
his charitable intentions for the London
Marathon. Fling a flan at Dave for a
pound swiftly escalated from a simple
Desert Topping on a paper plate to also
include bread, left over rice, chilli, jam,
marsh-mallows, and anything else that
was lying around. The bids started at £1,
but numerous counter bids soon meant
each flan was worth £10 to charity, and
£15 for the first flan to be flung - it could
have been the beer talking, but I’d like to
think it was the immense generosity of
everyone there! Clio was more than
happy to step up for the honour of being
the first flan flinger, and Dave, in the full
glare of car headlights, was then covered from head to foot (and in certain places not appropriate for this family newsletter) in the mixture. It was all taken in great spirit by
Dave, but the fact that the cows in the nearby shed refused to give milk the following
morning did confuse the farmer. I think if he saw the attached photo, he’d understand.
As the outdoor pool was closed, most people opted for another run on the Sunday (Jan,
don’t go out on your own in future, it’s just too dangerous out there) and ride. Dave and
Clio missed out on the cycle, as unbeknown to Clio, Dave was taking her out for a romantic night in a swanky hotel for her birthday. Another sunny day meant another great cycle
(despite getting hopelessly lost in a maze of country lanes) until, with about 3 miles to go
(and about 30 minutes before the cleaner was due to clean up the Farm), there was the
“Psst psst psst psst” of Steve B’s tyre. This was swiftly followed by a “f*** b**** s***”
from Steve B. Knowing that Apple Strudel and custard was at risk if the cleaner got there
before us, encouraged one of the fastest tyre changes in history, and meant the strudel was
ours!
Another cracking weekend enjoyed by one and all, once again helped by some great
weather. Roll on next year, which begs the question, is everyone happy with Bamford, or
do people want a change of scene? If anyone has any suggestions for next year, throw
them onto the forum, and we can sort it out well in advance.

Well here it is, my first newsletter completed. Special thanks to Perry for
getting me started and for the keeping the Newsletter going for the past Contribute including stories,
couple of years. Not easy to do when you have a busy training and race reports, news item’s, clasevents schedule. Now I can appreciate just how difficult is to get all the sifieds or event listing may be
articles together in time and compile the race reports and results. This is submitted either as Microsoft

bring the race reports to life. In particular I want to hear from the Juniors . Sorry, no Junior frost1@ntlworld.com
Section this time, but I need your contributions.
For those that are interested my own quest for a age group world championship
place ended in disappointment at Ashford Triathlon, by under 3 minutes. But what the
heck… At least I’ve learned some valuable lessons. 1. If you have a particular race goal tailor your preparation training and taper for that event only. In my case the third of the qualifying races. I had no realistic
chance of making the first two. 2. Don’t bank on a fancy new carbon frame time trial bike making you quicker in a triathlon. OK my time trials are quicker but the more sensitive handling of a time trial bike may slow you down on the more
testing triathlon cycle courses, or at least take a number of races, even a season, to get used to. Anyway, that’s my
contribution...now lets here from you , so we can all Celebrate your Successes.
Time on your hands
over the SUMMER
Fancy some cycling/running/walking. If you are interested going to
the lakes or further a field (France?) for a day/few days. I’m looking
to get a group together for social /hosteling/camping day trips
Bike needed for triathlon and touring/bike holidays, 2nd hand ok.
