Methodological debates in economic
sciences
The second seminar in the Methodological debate in economic sciences
series–The controversy over paradigms in management sciences–was
held on 12 June 2015. The first part
consisted of speeches given by
prof. dr. hab. Łukasz Sułkowski (Jagiellonian University), prof. dr. hab. Piotr
Płoszajski (Warsaw School of Economics) and prof. dr. hab. Piotr Banaszyk
(Poznan University of Economics).
Professor Łukasz Sułkowski focused on the issue of multimethodology, multiparadigmity and fragmentation of paradigms in management
sciences, with particular emphasis
on the cognitive values of currently
practiced approaches such as nonpositivist functionalist paradigm,
interpretive symbolic paradigm, criti-
cal paradigm (CMS) and postmodern
approach. Professor Piotr Płoszajski
emphasized, among others, that
management sciences need to move
from the Newtonian paradigm to the
quantum theory of management and
recognition of the role of metaphor
in acquiring knowledge, due to the
fact that the current social and economic systems are characterized by
instability, non-linearity and deterministic chaos. A PUE scientist,
prof. Piotr Banaszyk, referring to
the state of paradigmatic-methodological liberalism, pointed out that
the social nature of management
sciences causes the entanglement
of the studied events and processes
in individual and group interests,
including political factors, while the
practical aspect of these sciences
leads to a lack of constancy of the
study area, which changes due to the
intervention of researchers.
The second part of the seminar was
a discussion about the state of methodology in management sciences. This
debate was jointly led and commented
by dr hab. Dominika Latusek-Jurczak
(Kozminski University in Warsaw) and
dr hab. Sylwester Białowąs (Poznan
University of Economics).
The seminar was organized by
dr hab. Halina Zboroń and dr hab.
Barbara Pogonowska (a lecturer in
the Department of Sociology and
Philosophy) under the patronage
of the Vice-Rector for Research and
International Relations, prof. dr hab.
Maciej Żukowski.
Workshops for participants of Doctoral
Seminars in English
Special trainings, lectures, and meetings with promoters – this is how the workshops for participants of
the another DSE edition looked like. The classes were attended by over thirty students from Israel.
The workshops were held in early
July in the building of the Poznan

Cohen-Dar - Vice-Ambassador of Israel
to Poland. During her stay in Poznan,

INTERVIEW
65th anniversary of Commodity Science
at PUE
-an interview with Dean of the Faculty of Commodity
Science, prof. dr. hab. inż. Ryszard Zieliński, prof. zw. UEP
only do the graduates earn an engineering degree, but they also spend
a lot of time in laboratories. Why
is this science closer to economics
than to natural sciences?
prof. Ryszard Zieliński: The answer
to this question lies in the simple
statement: “any trade begins with
the product.” We can’t sell something
until we have produced it. Therefore,
commodity science is a field that is
primary to other economic sciences.
At the same time, they are closely
related. It determines the quality of
the products in the process of storage
or transport. Commodity science also
closely cooperates with marketing
and allows to predict new trends.
Commodity science has been
taught at our University for
65 years now, but for many, this
area of research is still a mystery.
What is commodity science?
prof. Ryszard Zieliński: Commodity
science is an interdisciplinary field
that combines economic, technical
and natural elements. Its main subject
of interest is a product and its nature,
resulting from a series of operational
and management processes. Modern commodity science pays special
attention to the process of product
design and translating the requirements of consumers into strictly
defined technological and qualitative
parameters.
Commodity science is one of the
most specific fields of study. Not
22
As a field of study, commodity science has existed at PUE since 1950.
What led to its establishment?
prof. Ryszard Zieliński: At the
beginning of its existence, the
University taught only one subject
of general economics character. But
it also involved technical subjects.
Each student had to take mandatory
classes in physics or electronics. It
didn’t matter if they were studying
to work in accounting, finance or
international trade. It was not until
the late 1940s when one day, Józef
Pieńkowski, Maciej Wiewiórowski
i Marian Durski came to the classroom and divided all students into
two groups. One group were supposed to study trade and the second
one commodity science.
The Faculty of Commodity Science
was founded just three years later.
What caused such a rapid development of this science at that time?
prof. Ryszard Zieliński: In my opinion, it was associated with the political
will. From the point of view of then
local authorities, education in the field
of macro- and microeconomics was
completely unnecessary, because the
state controlled the economy. However, there was a demand for people
who could carry out quality control,
find errors in the production process
and indicate which workers perform
poorly. Trade Inspection and the Central Institute for Standardization were
established at that time. That’s why it
was so important to educate future
commodity science specialists.
Over the course of the last 65 years,
there has been huge progress in
civilization. How did this field of
study and its programme change
over time?
prof. Ryszard Zieliński: The change
has been significant. We need to bear
in mind that when Commodity Science
was established as a field of study, it
did not contain elements of economics. It was a natural science then. It
was only in the 1960s, when the Faculty of Commodity Science merged
with the Faculty of Commerce, when
subjects such as statistics, demography and history of economic thought
appeared in the study programme. In
the 1970s, the programme was com-
INTERVIEW
plemented with technical subjects
such as materials science, process
engineering and technical drawing.
And how does this field of study
look like today? What are its prospects for development?
prof. Ryszard Zieliński: Currently, it
is a kind of fusion between economic,
technical and natural subjects. If
I were to estimate, I would say that
their share is 30%, 30% and 40%,
respectively. And how it is going to
look like in a few years? I think this
division will be preserved. It will not
get closer to other economic sciences,
that’s for sure. Currently, the market
needs people who know the natural
and technical issues, but also have
knowledge of economics. That is why
Commodity Science will survive and it
will be doing just fine.
ducted in English; it’s on the border of
economics, technology, but primarily
natural science. The study programme
will include subjects such as environmental protection, sustainable
development and analysis of a life
cycle of a product.
that he also graduated from the Faculty
of Commodity Science.
What knowledge do the graduates
have and where can they find a job?
prof. Ryszard Zieliński: I don’t want
to brag, but we are an absolute leader
when it comes to teaching commodity science. Basically, other institutions
copy what we come up with. Also,
we have gained enormous international recognition. Every two years,
we hold an international conference
Current Trends in Commodity Science,
attended by the whole world of commodity science.
prof. Ryszard Zieliński: Our students
are taught primarily quality control of
raw materials, quality control of processes and preparation of recipes. They
are prepared to write expert’s opinions,
they can carry out research, but above
all, they are able to interpret the results. Today, many commodity science
specialists work in the departments of
quality management, product design
or quality control.
The Faculty of Commodity Science
offers three fields of study to its students. Do the other two also have
a bright future?
Graduates of the Faculty of Commodity Science are very successful
in their work. Who would be the
best ambassador of Commodity
Science?
prof. Ryszard Zieliński: Definitely!
In my opinion, Management and
Production Engineering will do even
better, thanks to the expansion of
management issues. And it doesn’t
focus just on the process or the product, but also marketing management.
Product and Process Management is
a completely new field of study con-
prof. Ryszard Zieliński: Definitely, it
is worth to mention Krzysztof Panek
who started his career in the brewing
industry and is currently Chairman of
the Board for Browar Fortuna. Also, we
shouldn’t be forgetting Andrzej Wituskiformer Mayor of the City of Poznan and
originator of the Henryk Wieniawski
Violin Competition. Few people know
The Poznan University of Economics
is not the only institution educating
in the field of commodity science.
Why choose our University?
Part of the celebration of the 65th
anniversary of Commodity Science is
already behind us. Do you plan any
other events in the new academic
year?
prof. Ryszard Zieliński: The main part
of the celebration was held in May, this
year. It included Commodity Science
Youth Day and a national conference
of scientific circles. In early September,
one more international conference
was organized-”Process and Product
Management,” and it summarized the
whole anniversary event.
Thank you.

I chose PUE because...
I believed that a good reputation guarantees high quality of education and will result in dynamic professional development. It turned out that I was right.
My best memory from the student days is
Interesting discussions with lecturers and meeting interesting people. Also, free time to discover and
develop new passions and interests.
Skills gained at PUE allow me to
Efficiently co-manage the company. Apart from many skills, I gained priceless theoretical knowledge
which is a solid foundation for practice. In my opinion, theory helps in understanding certain mechanisms
affecting companies and people. And the other way round, practice is often an inspiration for creating new
concepts and conducting research or implementing scientific projects. We should invest in both theory
and practice and that is why I decided to continue my education on postgraduate studies at PUE.
In five years I would like
ASD Consulting to be successful in the international market. I would like to also defend my
doctoral thesis.
Outside of work I like
Travels and adrenaline-releasing sports.
Professional advice for PUE students
Assume ambitious goals, which you strongly believe you can achieve and realize them consistently.

PUE IN THE MEDIA
Our experts in the media
prof. dr hab. M. Żukowski
What happens next with the retirement age?
During the election campaign,
President Andrzej Duda promised
to lower the retirement age. Is this
promise realistic? In the opinion
of PUE expert, prof. dr hab.Maciej
Żukowski, changing a reform that
has already been implemented is not
a good solution. It causes destabilization. Retirement parameters should
be determined for many years. They
cannot be politically played with or used
to solve current problems—emphasizes prof. Żukowski. Additionally, our
expert says that the retirement reform
was reasonable and necessary in view
of the demographic situation and the
current labor market. It was properly
distributed in time to reach gentle compensation. If the retirement age had not
been raised,the contributions would
have been increased or pensions would
have been lowered. All these methods
are uncomfortable for us, but raising
the retirement the age is probably least
unpleasant. After all, we live longer
and healthier—explains prof. dr hab.
Maciej Żukowski.
prof. dr hab. T. Kowalski
Aid for people who have CHF loans
Polish Parliament passed a CHF
law which is beneficial to a group
of debtors who have loans in Swiss
francs. This law will reduce the level
of debt in PLN, which is currently
much higher than expected by those
who took a loan in Swiss currency
a few years ago. In the opinion of
our expert, prof. dr hab. Tadeusz
Kowalski from the Department of
International Competitiveness, this
law will have a negative impact on the
Polish economy. In a well-functioning
market economy, we must not create
precedents prepared ad hoc and under
the influence of emotions and pressures
of interest groups. That will lead us to
serious economic problems in the future
— warns PUE expert.
dr K. Celka
Apartments for students
28
The holidays are the best time for
new students to look for accomodation. Rising prices for renting a room
make more and more students (and
their parents) consider getting a loan
and buying their own apartments.
Our expert, dr Krzysztof Celka from
the Department of Investments and
Real Estate, convinces that the most
cost-effective is to buy a larger apartment and rent some of the rooms. The
cost for a parent falls from 1500–1800
to 500–600 PLN—estimates dr Celka.
Money earned from renting is usually
spent on credit installments.
PUE IN THE MEDIA
dr K. Szwarc
Polish poverty
Today, over 2,8 mln Poles live in
extreme poverty. This means that up to
7.4% of the population of our country
live on less than 540 PLN per month.
Why does the number of the poor not
decline, since according to the Central
Statistical Office, our financial situation
is improving? According to CSO data,
in 2014, 7.4 percent of Poles lived in extreme poverty, the same as in 2013. But
this is misleading because of the change
in the extreme poverty line which we
consider a minimum subsistence—
explains Krzysztof Szwarc from the
Department of Statistics and Demography. Trying to justify the stabilization
of the poverty rate, one should mention
reduction of the number of Polish population which is the denominator in the
formula for the poverty rate. In one year
(2013 to 2014) the population in Poland
was reduced by nearly 20 thousand.—
adds the PUE expert.
prof. dr hab. W. Cellary
Programming in primary school
The Ministry of Education decided
that the schools should teach programming. First graders will already gain
skills and learn how to control robots.
Profesor dr hab. inż. Wojciech Cellary
from the Department of Information
Technology emphasized in Gazeta
Wyborcza how important in the Ministry’s concept is appropriate training for
teachers. It is wrong to believe that if we
buy our children computers and tablet
PCs they will learn everything by themselves. Without trained and motivated
teachers who can include modern equipment in the modified teaching process,
nothing much will happen.—PUE expert
believes.
prof. dr hab. Bogdan Sojkin
5th Anniversary of ERGO ARENA
One of the largest and most
modern sports halls in this part of
Europe celebrates its 5th anniversary. Since its inception, more than
500 events have been organized in
ERGO ARENA. Professional organization, flexibility in adjusting to the
requirements of formal and marketing events, professional service, substantive support from the managers
of the facility and full availability
24 hours / 7 days / 12 months clearly
encourage co-operation and organi-
zation of important and valuable
sporting and cultural events—says
prof. dr hab. Bogdan Sojkin. For
sport, and for handball in particular,
it is a special place; it guarantees
enthusiastic fans, superbly knowledgeable on the discipline. Above
all, it is a very lucky place because of
the triumphs of men’s national team
– ads the scientist, who is also the
vice-president of the Association of
