Ano ba ang pagiging Diyosesis? Why be thankful? What do
we need to be thankful for?
The Vatican II document Christus Dominus (meaning “Lord
Jesus”) talks about the bishops.
It says that “a diocese is that
portion of God’s people which is
entrusted to a bishop”. Ito ay tunay na simbahan kung saan ating
nararanasan ang pagiging isa,
katoliko, apostoliko, at banal.
There are 4 components of a diocese which make up “pasasalamat,
pananalig at pagpapanibago”.

Pasig, had an advanced celebration of his Golden Presbyteral
Anniversary last November 30,
2013 at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral coinciding
with the Feast of St. Andrew the
Apostle.
At the beginning of the Eucharisctic Celebration, His Excellency, Most Reverend Mylo
Hubert C. Vergara, D.D., Bishop
of Pasig, read the greetings of the
Supreme Pontiff Pope Francis in
English and Latin. It says: “We
congratulate our Brother, Ven-
erable Francisco C. San Diego,
Bishop Emeritus of Pasig, as we
celebrate the 50th anniversary of
his presbyteral ordination. And
we impart to him our Apostolic
Blessing as a sign of heavenly
favours. We also assure him of
our prayers and request him for
prayer for the Petrine office. We
exercise, given on the 14th day of
November, 2013.”
Bishop Mylo Vergara also extended his greetings in behalf of
the clergy, religious, and the laity
of the Diocese of Pasig, A citation of gratitude was given by His
Eminence Luis Antonio Cardinal

“The Year of Faith is an opportunity for Catholics to experience a
conversion – to turn back to Jesus
and enter into a deeper relationship with him”, stated Pope Francis. He described this conversion
as opening the “door of faith”
(Acts 14:27).
In line with Closing of the Year
of Faith in the Vatican, The Diocese of Pasig, headed by His Excellency, Most Reverend Mylo
Hubert C. Vergara, D.D., Bishop
of Pasig, held its own celebration at the Ynares Sports Arena
in Brgy. Kapitolyo that started at
5:00 pm last November 22.
The theme of the celebration:
“Pasasalamat, Pagpapanibago,
Pananalig” called for thanksgiving, renewed and deeper faith in
God. The event was kicked off
by the El Shaddai Chamber Choir
and Youth Animators. After the
praying of the Holy Rosary, the
Pasig Catholic College (PCC)
Pep Squad performed an amazing
production number.
The event featured three segments that dealt on the theme of
the celebration. Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Cruz tackled the first which was

FRANCIS’ LENT SCHEDULE
VATICAN City, Feb 27, 2014
(CNA/EWTN News)– The Vatican made public the schedule of
Pope Francis’ liturgical celebrations for March and April, including the list of Lenten and Easter
activities over which he will preside.
On March 16, the Second Sunday of Lent, Pope Francis will
make a pastoral visit to the Roman
parish Santa Maria dell’Orazione,
and will celebrate a penitential liturgy the next Friday, March 28, at
5 p.m. in St. Peter’s Basilica.
The following Sunday, April 6,
the Pope will make another pastoral visit to a Roman parish at 4
p.m.
In honor of Palm Sunday and the
Passion of our Lord on April 13,
Pope Francis will hold a blessing
of the palms and a procession at
9:30 a.m. in St. Peter’s Square.
Following these events, he will
celebrate Mass inside of the Papal Chapel.
On Holy Thursday the pontiff
will celebrate a Chrism Mass in
St. Peter’s Basilica at 9:30 a.m.,
and on Good Friday, taking place
on April 18, he will celebrate the
Lord’s Passion at 5 p.m. in St.
Peter’s Basilica, and will pray the
Stations of the Cross at 9:15 p.m.
at the Colosseum.
For Holy Thursday, the Vatican
made a special note that although
the Pope will preside over the “in
Coena Domini” Mass in the afternoon, he will – like last year as
well as in previous years in Buenos Aires – select a “situation of
a special nature from a pastoral
point of view, which will be communicated when appropriate.”
As such, there will be no celebration in St. Peter’s Basilica
that evening, nor will there be
the possibility for a large number
of faithful to attend, as the Papal
Household will not be distributing tickets for this event.
Saturday, April 19 the Pope will
preside over the Easter Vigil at
8:30 p.m. in St. Peter’s Basilica,
and on Easter Sunday he will hold
a public Mass in St. Peter’s Square
at 10:15 a.m., after which he will
give the “Urbi et Orbi,” which is
a special blessing given “to the
city and to the world,” from the
Basilica’s central balcony.
For the Second Sunday of Easter, or Divine Mercy Sunday,
taking place on April 27, Pope
Francis will preside over a public
Mass in St. Peter’s Square at 10
a.m., during which he will canonize both Bl. John Paul II and John
XXIII.
Announced by the Vatican last
September, the canonization of
both pontiff’s was approved after the verification of the second
miracle needed in the case of Bl.
John Paul II last summer.
However, in the case of John
XXIII, Pope Francis has decided
to canonize him despite the fact
that only one miracle has been
formally approved by the Vatican,
instead of the usual two. Although
the decision to waive the second
miracle is unusual, it is within the
authority of the Pope to do so.
When the decision to canonize
the pontiff was announced last
summer, Vatican press office director Fr. Federico Lombardi, S.J.
explained that since there was
already one approved miracle allowing Pope John XXIII to be beatified, the canonization will still
be valid, even without a second
miracle.
Bl. John Paul II is perhaps one
of the most well-known pontiffs
in recent history, and is most remembered for his charismatic
nature, his love of youth and his
world travels, along with his role
in the fall of communism in Europe during his 27-year papacy.
The cherished Polish Pope died
in 2005, marking his 2011 beatification as one of the quickest in
recent Church history, and is the
first Pope to be beatified by his
immediate successor.

St. Anne recognizes laity

TAGUIG CITY - The Archdiocesan Shrine of St. Anne celebrated
their thanksgiving feast in honor
of their patroness St. Anne last
February 21 to March 2, 2014 by
recognizing the contributions of
the laity in promoting and enriching the faith not only in the parish but also in the whole city of
Taguig.
The entire celebration guided
with the theme “Pasasalamat ng
Bayan sa Biyaya ng Pananampalataya sa Taon ng Layko”, inspired
by the celebration of the Year of
the Laity and the Shrine’s 426th
Year Jubilee, encouraged the laity’s participation not only during
the novena but also on the actual
feast day.
Various organizations and Ministries showcased their talents as
they present it in front of the dev-
otees during the novena masses
all presided by Rev. Fr. Amando
Litana and Rev. Fr. Arnel Barba, both resident priests of the
Shrine of St. Anne. Processions
were done on the first two days
of the novena, organized by San
Felipe Bukluran of Sta. Ana and
San Sebastian Bukluran of Wawa
respectively. Ms. Dulce and the
FORTEnors also performed on a
fund raising concert organized by
the Parish Pastoral Council.
March 2, the culminating date
of the Thanksgiving Feast, was
celebrated both by the clergy and
laity with a regular Sunday Mass

An August to remember

There may have been twelve
months in a year but August is
one of the most awaited months.
For us parishioners of Sta. Rosa
de Lima Parish, one great August
passed. The Fridays of August are
scheduled for Street masses led
by parish priest Fr. Mar Baranda.
August 14-22 marked the nine
days of novena in honor of our
dear patroness. The former resident priests of the parish were the
mass celebrants.
We have been fortunate because
August 17 was the Pastoral Visit
of Bishop Mylo Hubert Vergara.
Despite the bishop’s heavy schedule, he still faced us with enthusiasm. We are all grateful for we
have been his 10th Parish Visitation.
In the Fiesta Mass, Bishop

in his homily the virtues of humility and holiness.

The St. Anne Theater and Dance
Company accompanied with the
St. Anne Grand Chorale, same as
during the novena, added more
color and grandeur to the celebration by performing the entrance
song and the Gloria.
The Fiesta celebration also
served as an avenue of charity,
for the proceeds of the love offerings collected during the entire celebration will go to San
Antonio Abad Parish in Carmen,
Bohol and San Joaquin Parish in
Palo, Leyte, both recovering from
the aftermath of the earthquake
and typhoon Yolanda, as aid to
their recovery, which is another
manifestation of the laity’s great
contribution to the missions of
the Church.
A binyagang-bayan was held
last August 24. A number of infants became Catholics.
In celebration of the Year of
Faith, God gives us ways to
strengthen our spiritual relationship with Him. Spiritual maturity
may take a lifetime process but
God prepares activities to glorify
His name and to serve His flock.
These activities express faith
without limits. One wonderful
month happened and definitely
it’s an August to remember.

inamahal kong Sambayanan ng Diyos ng Diyosesis ng Pasig,
Kapayapaan mula sa Panginoong Hesukristo, ang Prinsipe ng Kapayapaan!
Buong galak kong ipinahahayag sa inyo ang taong 2014 bilang “Year of the
Laity” o “Taon ng Laiko.” Habang naghahanda tayo sa ika-500 taon ng pagdating
ng Kristiyanismo sa ating bayan, nagtakda ang mga Obispo ninyo ng iba’t ibang
paksa bawat taon (“Live Christ, Share Christ,” CBCP Exhortation on the Era of
the New Evangelization, July 23, 2012). Noong isang taon ay “Year of Integral
Faith Formation” na napaloob sa mas malawak na “Year of Faith” o “Taon ng
Pananampalataya” ng buong Simbahan sa buong daigdig. Naging makabuluhan
ang nagdaang taon dahil sa “National Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of
Mary,” tuwing unang Sabado ng buwan. Sa tulong ng Kalinis-linisang Puso ni
Maria, bawat Pilipino ay nagkaroon ng pagkakataong maunawaan, maisapuso at
maisabuhay ang pananalig sa Diyos.
Ngayong “Taon ng Laiko” hangad ng inyong mga Obispo na muling tuklasin
ng lahat ng laiko ang kanilang katauhan bilang binyagan na isinasabuhay ang
kanilang bokasyon at misyon ng pagka – PARI, pagka – PROPETA at pagka
– HARING LINGKOD sa Simbahan at lipunan. Ito ang biyayang tinanggap natin
mula sa Diyos sa Binyag, pinagtibay sa Kumpil at pinalakas sa Banal na Eukaristiya.

Ang ikalawa ay si Ka Luring na bantog na katekista mula sa St. Michael Parish,
Hagonoy. Batang Pari pa po ako nang nakilala ko si Ka Luring. Pumanaw siya
halos tatlong taon na ang nakaraan. Nagsilbi siyang inspirasyon sa akin dahil isa
siyang tapat na taga-pangaral ng salita ng Diyos at ng katuruan ng Simbahan.
Kahit pagod na pagod siya at walang pera, hindi ito naging hadlang sa pagtuturo
niya sa “public school” at mga mumunting pamayanan. Usapang nga naming mga
pari noon, kapag kailangan niya ng tulong ng pari para sa Misa o sa Kumpisal,
isang paki usap lang niya ay di mo na siya matatanggihan kahit punong-puno ang
iskedyul mo. Tunay ngang naging inspirasyon si Ka Luring sa akin dahil isinabuhay niya ang pagka-PROPETA niya bilang binyagan.
Ang ikatlo as si Bro. Ferdi Fuentes na taga Holy Family Parish, Brgy. Kapitolyo, Pasig Bago siya yumao dala ng sakit na kanser noong nakaraang taon,
naging huwarang lider-lingkod siya ng parokya. Malaki ang naitulong niya sa
pangangasiwa ng proyekto ng bagong tayong simbahan ng Holy Family Parish.
Minsan, dinalaw ko siya sa ospital at damang dama ko ang malalim niyang pananampalataya sa Diyos at patuloy na hangaring maglingkod sa kanya hanggang
kaya ng kanyang katawan. Nagsilbi din siyang inspirasyon sa kanyang asawa at
mga anak at pati na rin kapwa lingkod sa parokya. Pinatunayan niya sa akin ang

Lent and the poor
I
t is significant that in both pastoral letter of the Catholic Bishops
Conference of the Philippines “The joy of the Gospel and the
Church of the Poor” issued last January 2014 and its Lenten message “Poverty that dehumanizes and poverty that sanctifies,” the
core message is focused heavily on the plight of the poor.
Just look around and see the signs of abject poverty; back this up
by surveys conducted to prove that “the income gap between our
rich and poor has not closed: the richest ten percent of our population is earning ten times more than the poorest ten percent, with
the income of the richest families soaring way beyond the income
of the poorest.” (Family Income and Expenditure Survey, NSCB,
2012)
The height of the political scandals is turned on the high ranking
government and elected public officials on the issue of pork barrel,
with amounts reaching up to unfathomable scales. Tapping it all
off is the incessant desire for political aligments for the 2016 elections; only heaven knows what lies in politicians’ hearts for running
for public office - either they use power responsibly or perpetuate a
culture of corruption, thus, inflicting more pain on the already suffering Filipinos.
The CBCP underscores the “pervading cancer of corruption”
that can only by eradicated by “seeking truth and restoring integrity”. The bishops invite us to consider the remedy: to shift from
a dehumanizing poverty to poverty that sanctifies: simplicity of life,
commitment to the good, just, and true, and surrender to God, the
source of salvation. Taking off from Amartya Sen’s “total human
development”, the CBCP reminds us: “We are to exercise moral
poverty by strengthening our resolve to practice solidarity with
the neglected and to denounce injustice and all forms of radical
inequality. We are to embrace spiritual poverty by deepening our
rootedness in Christ, whose poverty alone enriches us.”
Heed Pope Francis’ words: “We may be sure that none of our acts
of love will be lost, nor any of our acts of sincere concern for others. No single act of love for God will be lost, no generous effort is
meaningless, no painful endurance is wasted” (EG 279).

the Philippines bilang Taon ng Laiko,
sa kanilang liham na pinamagatang
“Filipino Catholic Laity: Called to be
Saints . . . Sent Forth as Heroes” (CBCP
Pastoral Exhortation for the 2014 Year
of the Laity, Dec. 1, 2013). Sa ating
Diyosesis, mas lalo pa ito pinatingkad
ng ating butihing Obispo, Mylo Hubert C. Vergara, sa ating kamalayan
noong naglabas siya ng liham-pastoral na pinamagatang “Laiko ng Pasig:
Presensya ng Diyos sa Daigdig.” Ito’y
kamakailan binasa sa bawat parokya.
Sa kanyang liham-pastoral, pinatingkad ni Bp. Vergara ang mga tatlong
papel ng mga laiko, na tinanggap nila
noong sila’y bininyagan bilang pakikibahagi sa buhay na banal ni Hesukristo, na dapat gampanan nila bilang
Katolikong Kristiyano. Ang mga ito’y
PAGKA-PARI, PAGKA-PROPETA, at
PAGKA-HARING LINGKOD.
Kapag sinabi PAGKA-PARI, hindi
nangangahulugan na lahat, kahit mga
babae’t bata ay maging pari tulad ni
Fr. Daniel Estacio o Fr. Joselito Jopson
na kayang magmisa. Sa konteksto ng
pagiging laiko, ang ibig sabihin nito’y
gawing banal ang mga gawain sa
pamamagitan ng pag-aalay ng mga ito
sa Diyos. Ang isang laiko ay masasabi
natin na isa siyang pari kung inaalay
niya sa Diyos, sa kanyang panalangin,
ang lahat ng kanyang mga gawain sa
buhay, ang mga dinadala niyang mga
problema’t pagsubok sa buhay, at ang
kanyang mga karanasan (CCC 901).
Sa ganitong paraan, napapabanal niya
hindi lang ang kanyang sarili at mga taong nakakasalamuha niya, pati na ang
mundong kinagagalawan niya. Kaya,
kayong mga laiko ay maging pari na
hindi na kinakailangang mag-ordenahan na pari o maging madre (pero hindi
namin kayo pinipigilan na maging pari
kung lalaki po kayo, o maging madre,
kung babae ka, kung talagang may
tawag o bokasyon po kayo).
Sa isang palad naman, ang PAGKA-PROPETA ng isang laiko ay ito:
maging matatag ang kanyang kalooban na ipahayag ang Mabuting Balita
at ipakilala si Kristo sa lahat. Ibig
sabihi’y ang isang laiko ay dapat ipahayag ang Mabuting Balita at si Hesukristo sa kanilang karaniwang buhay,
sa kanilang gawa’t salita. Ang papel
na ito, kung seseryosohin ng bawat
laiko, ay magiging mabisa dahil ito’y
magagawa sa mismong totoong buhay
ng tao (CCC 905).
Ang PAGKA-HARING LINGKOD
nama’y nangangahulugan na ang mga
laiko ay dapat maglingkod sa kapwa

Are parish pastoral councils really needed in parishes?
I wonder why some parishes
exist without the Parish Pastoral
Council. Although in Canon Law the
existence of such council is only recommendatory while the existence of
Parish Finance Council is mandatory.
The existence of the Parish Pastoral
Council is a direct result of Vatican II
(1962-1965). The bishops of the world
assembled at that time affirmed and reaffirmed the fact that through baptism,
laypersons have an indispensable role
in the mission of the Church. The Pastoral Council is one result of this teaching. A Parish Priest, by working with
the pastoral council, is seeking suggestions and recommendations on matters
which touch the pastoral activity of his
entire parish.
Canon law sets out some guidelines
for how the council is to operate (canon
511-514), but
basically the
role and scope
of the pastoral
council is determined by the individual
Statutes of Parish Pastoral Council.
Members are appointed by him for
a certain period of time and the code
suggests that the lay membership of the
council reflect the diverse population
of the parish: regions, economic and
social conditions, professions, ministries, organization and types of work.
The pastoral council acts in an ordinary capacity to advise the Parish
Priest; it enables him in his decision
making to draw on the gifts and talents
of others. When effectively organized
and active within a parish, it ensures
a vital and life-giving relationship
between pastoral policy and the daily
Christian experience of the people.

Broadcasting Television or ISDBTV, the official Japanese system of
digital TV, will slowly be implemented
in the Philippines starting late this year
or early next year.
An ISDBT International Conference
was held last Jan. 13 – 14, 2014 at the
Edsa Shangrila Hotel to orient Philippine broadcasters to this new system.

In a speech delivered by Sec. Mario
Montejo of the Department of Science
and Technology, he underscored the
advantages of such system: “ISDBT
provides better viewing experience,
and education opportunities, disaster
management, wider TV space… we
have to plan before adopting a system
that best suits the county.”
He acknowledged that the Philippines
is in a critical transition to digital terrestrial TV that would change viewer
expectations.

ISDBT, promoted as having “infinite
possibilities” has three features favorable to both consumers and businesses
- social innovation, data broadcasting,
and technological innovations.
Social innovation. ISBDT provides
real time enjoyment connected with
advertising. It is an interactive device
in which one can order products or participate in game shows in the convenience of his own home as in Japan’s
JOIN TV.
ISDBT works in harmony with social networking such as Facebook and
Twitter. It can also serve as a tool for
measuring surveys and public opinion.
Data broadcasting. also known as

of almost anything like weather forecast, food and restaurants, and even police information with a system that is
friendly to children and the elderly.
Government information is easily accessible, providing knowledge, education, information, service and formation among the viewers.
Contribution to education. Universities and other educational institutions
can avail of services of ISDBTV. In a
test broadcast in Botswana, the Department of Agriculture teaches the public
on how to breed cattle. There is also a
“telehealth” that informs the people on
how to take care of their health.
ISDBT’s greatest contribution:
emergency warning broadcast system. Also known as EWBS, there will
be a real-time government response
during emergencies like typhoons,
tsunamis, earthquakes, and even terrorism. The greatest fear a citizen can
have is isolation and a lack of information. Through ISDBT, the government
can give regular and fast updates that
could save people’s lives in an instant.
Technological innovation. With
this technology, the TV will not be
confined simply in the home; one can
watch programs anywhere using their
smartphones and tablets.
In an island without electricity, TV
can be viewed because it doesn’t require power. The program is free-toair and transmitted through terrestrial
and satellite transmission. Thus, TV
information can easily be attained by
many, eliminating digital divide.
With such technological advancement happening in the Philippines
come 2015, how could the Church cope
up? Will she use digital television to
proclaim God’s word? Stay tuned!

unay ngang napakabuti at napakadakila ng pag-ibig ng Diyos sa Pasig, Pateros at
Taguig. Parang kalian lang at nakarating na tayo ng sampung taon bilang sambayanan
ng Diyos. Ito’y dahil sa katapatan ng Diyos sa atin.
Ito ang mensahe ng lahat ng pagbasa sa pagdiriwang ng misa natin ngayon. Sa unang
pagbasa mula sa aklat ng mga Hari (1 Hari 8:56-61), pinaalalahan ni Haring Solomon ang
bayang Israel na dahil sa katapatan ng Diyos sa kanyang bayang minamahal, tinupad Niya
ang kanyang pangako sa Israel. Sa pamamagitan ni Moises, sila’y nakarating sa lupang

ating mga Obispo ng Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) na ito’y
Taon ng “Integral Faith Formation” upang seryosohin natin ang personal at pampamayanang paghuhubog tungkol sa mga mahahalagang aral ni Hesus at ng Simbahan. Paghahanda rin ito sa pagdiriwang natin ng ika-500 anibersaryo ng Kristiyanismo sa Pilipinas sa
darating na 2021.
Nung “World Youth Day” (WYD 2013) sa Brazil nasabi ng ating Santo Papa Francisco
sa kabataan na mihahalintulad ang pag-aaral ng pananmpalataya sa mga atleta na nagsasanay sa isang “sports field” (Sabi daw mahilig manood ng “soccer” si Pope Francis). Para
maging magaling at mahusay na atleta, anuman ang “sports” mo, kailangang mag-ensayong
mabuti para manalo sa laban. Ganun din di ba? Kailangang mag-ensayo sa pamamagitan
ng pag-aaral sa ating pananampalataya. Hindi na puede ngayon ang isang Katolikong
walang alam sa kanyang sinasampalatayanan. Ito ngang nakaraan kong bisita pastoral sa

isang parokya, naitanong sa akin ng isang lider-layko kung ano daw ang gagawin ng Simbahan sa marami na ring sumasapi sa ibang sekta o ibang relihiyon pa nga. Kaya nga ang isa
sa mga sagot ko: buksan ang bibliya, buksan ang libro ng katesismo, buksan ang maraming
aklat na naglalaman ng katuruan ng simbahan. Pag-aralan, pagnilayan at pagdasalan!
Paglilingkod sa Simbahan
Sinabi ng Panginoon: “Marami nga ang aanihin at kakaunti ang manggagawa. Idalangin
ninyo sa Panginoon ng ani na magpadala siya ng manggagawa sa kanyang ani.” (Mateo
9:37-38) Ito po ang problema natin sa ngayon. Maaaring sasabihin ninyo, napuno natin
ang katedral na ito at maraming lingkod ang Diyosesis ng Pasig. Pero sa totoo lang, kulang
na kulang po ang mga pari at madre natin na naglilingkod sa lampas 1.6 milyong katoliko
(alam niyo po yan!). At noong nakaraang buwan, namatay at inilibing natin ang isa nating
pari, si Fr. Mars Selmar. Iiilan din lamang po ang mga seminarista natin. Sana po bawat isa
sa atin ay manghikayat ng kabataang magpari o magmadre.
Pati mga lider-layko ng mga parokya ay kakaunti rin at bihirang madagdagan. At nuon
nga pong nakaraang linngo, nailibing na sa kanyang huling hantungan ang ating kapatid na
si Ferdie Fuentes na naging mahusay, mabuti at banal na laikong lingkod ng Holy Family
Parish, Barrio Kapitolyo. Marami na ring ilan sa inyo na tumatanda na ay naghahangad
na maipamana sa mga kabataan ang inyong paglilingkod. Kaya nga po isa sa mga hangarin
ko ang maipamulat sa ating lahat ang pagiging mabuting katiwala ng Panginoon—sa ingles
ay yung tinatawag na “stewardship of time,
talent and treasure”. Yung bang maunawaan Hindi na pwede
natin na sa Diyos galing ang lahat at bilang
ngayon ang isang
tugon sa mga biyaya ng buhay, pamilya,

naglilingkod sa parokya (obispo, pari, madre o layko ka man) ay inaasahang maging mabuting halimbawa ni Hesus. Kaso pagkagaling natin sa simbahan, na inaasahang nakarinig sa
Salita ng Diyos at tumanggap ng Banal na Komunyon ay di nagiging salamin ni Hesus. Di
nila makita si Hesus sa ating salita at gawa. Kaya siguro kailangan nating magbagong-buhay
para makahikayat ng iba na magbagong buhay rin at maglingkod kay Kristo.
Pagkakaisa bilang Sambayanan ng Diyos
Naalala ko ang isang “interview” sa kauna-unahang obispong Pilipino sa Amerika, si Bp.
Oscar Solis, tungkol sa mga Pilipino sa Los Angeles, California (si Bp. Solis po ay tubong
San Jose, Nueva Ecija kung saan ako dating naglingkod bilang obispo). Tinanong sa kanya:
“Bishop, “united” po ba ang mga Pilipino sa Archdiocese of Los Angeles?” Pabirong sagot
niya: “Aba oo. Very United. United ang mga Ilocano. United ang mga Bicolano. United ang
mga Bisaya. United ang mga Kapampangan…” Natawa po ako. Di ba may katotohanan.
Marami sa atin ay “kanya-kanya” at “tayo-tayo” mentality pa rin. Sa parokya, may mga
paksyon-paksyon pa rin. May mga ang tingin: “Sila, loyal or ‘favorite’ ni Father, kami rebelde ng parokya at kaaway ni Father.” Yun iba naman sariling “mandated organization” lang
ang iniisip. At yun iba walang pakiaalam. Sana po itigil na natin ang pagkakawatak-watak, o
kaya ang hidwaan na dulot ng intriga at samaan ng loob sa parokya. Ang mga may tampuhan ay magpatawad na po at magkipagkasundo sa bawat isa. Tahakin na po natin ang daan
ng paghihilom ng mga sugatang puso na magdudulot sa ating pagkakaisa upang maayos na
ang makapaglingkod sa Diyos at kapwa.
Sa aking palagay, ito po ang tatlong hamon sa ating ng Diyos upang maging makabuluhan
ang paglalakbay natin bilang diyosesis sa mga taon pang darating: seryosong pag-aaral ng
ating pananampalataya, masigasig na paglilingkod sa ating pamayanan at makatotohanang
pagkakaisa ng ating sambayayan.
Sa pamamagitan ng ating Mahal na Ina, ang Imaculada Concepcion at lahat ng patron ng
ating mga parokya, hilingin natin sa Poong Maykapal na maging makabuluhang saksi tayo
ng pananampalataya ng Diyosesis ng Pasig sa isip, sa salita at sa gawa. Amen.

the diocese. It is therefore incumbent
upon the bishop to visit all parishes,
schools, hospitals and other institutions within his jurisdiction which in
a way contributes to the pastoral care
of a certain portion of God’s people.
More importantly, the bishop would be
able to see how pastoral workers work
in collaboration with various ministries
and the prospect of a unified pastoral
program in the diocese.
As a shepherd, the pastoral visit provides bishop Mylo a chance to be with
his flock and know more about their
needs and concerns. Inasmuch as no
community is perfect and therefore
needs guidance from its spiritual leader, his dialogue with the PPC members
who represent the whole parish would
be enlightening
and very much helpful in the administration of the parish. The important
thing is that our people do recognize
the voice of their shepherd and vice
versa. As Jesus the good shepherd says,
“I am the good shepherd; I know my
own and my own know me,” Jn. 10:14.
True indeed, bishops are the successors
of the apostles thus they are vicars of
Christ in their respective dioceses. Besides talking and listening to lay leaders, the bishop takes time to be with his
priests and discusses ways and means
that would help bring about a more
harmonious relationship among pastoral workers including priests. I remember Bishop Mylo putting emphasis on
the need to deepen one’s relationship
with the Lord as this will sustain our
unity and zeal in our apostolate.
The bishop finds his pastoral visit
fulfilling and inspiring. He says we are
indeed blessed because of the dedicated lay men and women in our diocese
of Pasig. He is happy to learn that our
people long to be guided by their pastors on how well they could serve the
Lord, indicative of the inspiration of
the Holy Spirit.

D
ear DFLM Pasig:
Ten years of being together
through good times and bad is hard to
come by and we felt a little sad. But we
are really so grateful that God has given us the opportunity to serve that long.
And to top it all He sent us people like
you who believed in the same things
we believed in, and loved the same
things we loved. We were together in
our fight for the good of the family and
in spite of the frustrations in recruiting
attendees to seminars and would-be
members, we remained steadfast and
sincere in our commitment. There were
happy times, of course during our infrequent but fun-filled agapes.
There were times when we said that
what we were doing is a thankless job
since we don’t see the concrete results
of our efforts to touch lives and make a
difference. But then God marks all the
little things we do for Him, no matter
how insignificant it may look in our
eyes. We did our best and He did the
rest.
Like the apostles, we, too, were commissioned by Christ and He expects us
to continue His work here on earth. We
are His mouthpiece and the stewards of
His creation. We must expect that the
task is not easy especially now in our
present time. We know about the pork
barrel scandal, the RH bill that we’ve
been fighting since ten years ago, gay
marriages, sexual permissiveness, broken marriages, and above all the ever
present fangs of poverty, eating the
very core
of
our
personhood. We know about the weakening
of our moral fiber as a Catholic country. This is truly overwhelming. And
all the more we have to go on. “The
harvest indeed is great but the workers
are few.”
Let us not allow the dangers and demands of the present world drive us to
a corner in fear, but let us take a stand
and reinvent ourselves. God gave us individual faculties not to sit on them but
to use them collectively for His Kingdom. Let us fill ourselves with knowledge about what’s going on and align
ourselves to the needs and demands of
the present time. This is the challenge
we bequeath to you, to all of you.
The family life apostolate is no longer just a ministry to us – it is our way
of life. So no matter how much you try
to ignore us, we will be behind you and
with you. Our physical disabilities will
not be a hindrance to our prayers and to
our service in any way we still can.
Most of all we wish to thank all the
past and present vicariate heads, the
parish coordinators, executive committee or core group and all the members
of DFLM. We extend our appreciation
to the present core group headed by
our newly appointed DFLM Lay Coordinator-couple Alex and Helen David
and our office administrator, Mulong

The Memorial of Our Lady of the
Rosary
The Catholic Church recognizes the
importance and efficacy of the rosary
through the celebration of the Memorial
of Our Lady of the Rosary on October 7
of each year. This feast, established by
Pope Pius V, commemorates the victory
of Christians against the Muslims at the
Battle of Lepanto on October 7, 1571.
Although outnumbered in both vessels
and sailors, the Christian armada defeated
the Turkish fleet. The feast also “gives
thanks to the Lord for all his benefits and
remembers the powerful intercession of
our Blessed Mother” (“History of the Rosary,” Fr. William Saunders). Archbishop
Fulton Sheen aptly stated, “The power of
the rosary is beyond description.”

Some Highlights of the Document
There are three highlights of the document: first, identification of inspiring holiness and participation of lay faithful in the
Church (# 2). Two temptations of laypeople are: “the temptation of being so strongly interested in Church services and tasks
that some fail to become actively engaged
in their responsibilities in the professional,
social, cultural and political world; and the
temptation of legitimizing the unwarranted
separation of faith from life, that is, a separation of the Gospel’s acceptance from the
actual living of the Gospel in various situations in the world.” (# 2)
New Testament images describe lay faithful in the Church: “vine and branches” [Jn
15:5]; “living stones” [1 Pt 2:5ff]; “salt and

CBCP Committee on Basic Ecclesial Communities, also expressed his hopes on basic ecclesial communities and what BEC
members can contribute in the building up
of the Church and society.
“My hopes are from the bottom up, in the
BECs… Make sure there is no corruption
among the leaders of the BECs,” he said.

calls laborers for his vineyard at various
times of the day (Mt 20: 1ff), the lay faithful are called to serve the Lord in all ages
and genders [ex. youth, aged, women], in
different circumstances and arenas of life

ministries and charisms [ex. parish, catechetical work, marriage and family apostolate, ecology, etc.] (# 44)
Importance therefore is placed on the ongoing formation of lay faithful [from the
Pope, bishops, priests, fellow laypeople,
schools, renewal centers, etc.]. (## 57-63)
In summary, Christifidelis Laici challenges the laity to be inspiring models of
holiness and active participation in the
Church, to conquer the temptations that
hinder them from genuine and committed
serve to the Church, to be ‘branches’ always attached to the ‘vine’, Jesus Christ, to
be ‘living stones’ of the spiritual building
in which Jesus Christ is the ‘corner stone’,
and to be salt of the earth and light of the
world
Furthermore, Christifidelis Laice challenges the laity to live out their three-fold
mission as priest, prophet and king, to take
to heart their vocation to holiness, to serve
the Lord in whatever age, gender, circumstance, area of life, ministry and charism,
and to seriously engage in ongoing formation and renewal so as to be effective
agents of evangelization.

myself Christian, but I live like a pagan!
Sometimes we say ‘halfway Christians’
who do not take this seriously. We are
holy, justified, sanctified by the blood of
Christ: take this sanctification and bring it

Penekostes.”

devotion in the
Catholic Church

T
he rosary, which means a “crown of roses,” is the most popular devotion
and one of the most cherished prayers of the Catholic Church. People pray
it for various intentions, for their needs, for guidance, to grow in holiness and in
one’s prayer life. St. Louis de Montfort valued the rosary as a “priceless treasure
inspired by God.”
It is indeed a priceless treasure because God gave us the rosary through the
Church and the Blessed Virgin Mary to become an instrument of power against the
attacks of the devil. It derives power from the Word of God and the mysteries of our redemption and the faithful witness of the Blessed Virgin Mary which are meditated upon
every bead. It is the power that makes us strong against evil. It is for this reason that
the devil does not want the rosary to be recited by the Church because it is an instrument against him. For hundreds of years, popes and saints have stood by the efficacy of
the rosary and recommended it. Pope Pius XII professed: “We do not hesitate to affirm
again publicly that we put great confidence in the Holy Rosary for the healing of evils
of our times.”
Origin and development
The rosary that we know today underwent a long period of development. Objects such
as beads, pebbles, even large stones, and
abacus-like devices were used to aid the

The first step in the development of the rosary occurred in the 9th century. During this
period, monastic monks recited 150 Psalms daily as a major source of inspiration. The
lay people near the monasteries saw the beauty of this devotion but many of them could
not read. So they substituted 150 Ave Marias (Hail Marys) for the Psalms and they were
given beads to help them.
The structure of the rosary gradually evolved between the 12th and 15th centuries.
Eventually 50 Hail Marys were recited and linked with verses of psalms or other phrases evoking the lives of Jesus and Mary (History of the Rosary, Fr. Wiliam Saunders).

of the Order of Preachers or Dominicans, devised the rosary as we know it, some scholars question his role in forming it. Dom Louis Cougaud wrote in 1922: “The various
elements entering into the composition of that Catholic devotion commonly called the
rosary are a product of a long and gradual development which began before St. Dominic’s time, which continued without his having any share in it and which only attained
its final shape several centuries after his death.”
But it was during the time of St. Dominic that the Church was plagued by internal
abuses, heresies and external challenges by the Turks and the Mohammedans. St. Dominic preached the use of the rosary in his missionary work against the Albigensians who
denied the mystery of Christ. The Christians were also victorious against their enemies
through the rosary. Soon the development of the Mysteries of the Rosary started. These
were not imposed but rather evolved in time.
Taking the controversy aside, it is a fact that the rosary as it is now is properly distinguished as the Dominican Rosary. The Dominican friars gave the rosary its present from

The meaning of the prayers of the rosary
The Sign of the Cross: Introduces the rosary as an act of devotion, of praise and of
glory to the Blessed Trinity, for the mysteries of salvation they have manifested to all
mankind. The Sign of the Cross is intended to indicate that everything we do, think, or
say is done in the “Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
The Apostles Creed: It is a summary of the 12 basic articles of the Catholic Faith
which every Christian should know.

hy celebrate the “Year of the Laity” for the Philippine Church?
“Year 2014: Laity. This year especially
celebrates both the sacrament of Baptism
by which all the faithful become God’s
sons and daughters and the sacrament of
Confirmation by which they become witnesses of Christ to others. Yet the gifts of
the Holy Spirit through these sacraments
often remain dormant. This year is to be
devoted to the renewal of the laity, to their
“empowerment” or more accurately to activating their charisms from the Spirit, so
that they may indeed take up their role as
co-responsible agents of evangelization
and lead in the task of social transformation. In this regard, of paramount global
importance is the ecological challenge
of climate change.” (“Live Christ, Share
Christ”, CBCP Pastoral Exhortation on
the Era of New Evangelization, July 23,
2102)
The YEAR OF THE LAITY encourages us to study and understand the lay
person’s identity, role, task and mission in
the teachings of the Church. One potent
source on this matter is the Church document Christifidelis Laici.
Some Pre-notes to the document
Christifidelis Laici is the Latin phrase
for “Christ’s Faithful People”. It is the
1988 Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation
of Blessed John Paul II on the Laity.
The theme of the 1987 Synod of Bishops was “The Vocation and Mission of
the Lay Faithful in the Church and in the
World Twenty Years after the Second Vatican Council”
It was within this Synod that St. Lorenzo
Ruiz de Manila (a layman) was canonized
as our First Filipino Saint.
Why and What is a Synod?
It is a collaborative expression of collegiality between the Pope and the Bishops of the world after Vatican II (syn =
“together”, hodos = “way”; Synod means
“walking together”).
Paul VI institutionalized this motu pro-
pio (by the Pope’s initiative) in the 1965
apostolic letter Apostolica Sollicitudo
(“apostolic concern”).
Through a synod, a common study is
done by the College of Bishops concerning certain conditions in the Church and
comes up with a joint solution concerning
her mission.
Three Types of Synod
The Extraordinary General Assembly
called to address a matter of urgent concern for the Church (ex. this 2014 on the
“Pastoral Challenges to the Family in the
Context of Evangelization”)
The Ordinary General Assembly called
at a fixed time and addressing issues affecting the universal Church, usually every 3-4 years (ex. in 2012 on “The New
Evangelization of the Transmission of the
Christian Faith”)
The Special assembly limited to calling together episcopal representatives of
a specific geographical area (Netherlands1980, Europe-1991, Africa-1994, Lebanon-1995, America-1997, Asia-1998,
Oceania-1998, Europe-1999, Africa-2009,
Middle East-2010)
Why a Synod on the Laity?
The Church needed reflection on the
meaning of lay life in the Church, twenty
years after Vatican II (should have held a
special synod on this in 1985 but an ordinary synod allowed more time for bishops, priests and laypeople to reflect on the
matter).
Crises and pressing concerns in the
Church as well as deeper faith and stronger Christian commitment in lay life (indifference and lack of involvement, new
fervor and methods of evangelization
coming from lay people) .
Lay groups of independent mentalities coming to prominence (ex. Opus Dei,
Neo-catechumenate, Charismatic movements, BECs, etc.)

PDYM: Building a sustainable Youth Ministry

T
he “Year of Faith” was a blessing for
the Pasig Diocesan Youth Ministry.
We were challenged to missionaries and
helped us particularly to see and discover
the urgent needs of our fellow young
people.
This year, as we celebrate the “Year of
the Laity”, we encourage everyone and
every youth of the Diocese of Pasig to
participate and to be a co-contributor in
building a sustainable youth ministry -- a
youth ministry which does not last for
just years or more. Mark Devries, author
of Family-Based Youth Ministry, says:
“Success in youth ministry is measured in
decades, not in year-to-date comparisons
with last year’s mediocre youth staffer.” It
may be true or not but we have to do our
own part as PDYM to achieve a sustainable youth ministry. It’s not bad to dream
and be ambitious to reach the goals as
long as the motive, the object, and the circumstances are good. We can achieve our
goals if we move forward together.
As one of our responses in building a
sustainable youth ministry, every month
we will be having a Youth Director’s
Night. It will serve as a venue for fellowship and opportunity to listen to some
inspiring faith stories the PDYM has. Our
parishes and vicariates will take turn as
venue for this fellowship.
Last January 18, 2014 we had a First
Youth Director’s Night dubbed as: “COFFEE AND DONUT FELLOWSHIP.” It
was hosted by the PYM/PYC San Guillermo Parish. The donuts and Emong’s
coffee are enough to satisfy our craving
for something sweet. Many shared their
journey as a youth and all went home
happy and satisfied.
Then came the 2nd Youth Director’s
Night held last February 22, 2014 at Sto.
Nino de Taguig Parish with the theme:
“A WALK TO GOD’S LOVE”. We were
blessed to have Fr. Jomar Valdevieso (on
the eve of his birthday) sharing us about
“RESPONSIBLE SEXUALITY.” He emphasized that sexuality is not only physical, but rather it involves right thinking,
matured feeling, acting, and interacting.
He also challenged us on how we should
think as youth of our diocese with regard
to our own sexuality. Nasa kabataan
nakasalalay ang pag-asa ng simbahan.
Kapag bata palang at nahubog sa kabutihan, tiyak may magandang maaasahan.
Hence, sexuality is a composite of mind
(taas), heart (puso), and body (katawan).
They should go together and function together. According to St. Thomas Aquinas,
sexual act is a sacred act.
Hence, thank you Vicariate of Sto.
Niño especially the parish of Sto. Niño de
Taguig (host) for preparing the night with
joyful songs, lively dances and warm welcome. Bro. Irving and the group, thank
you for leading this 2nd YDN. Bravo!
Thank you Fr. Paul Balagtas for accommodating our youth in your parish. The
red shirt most of us wore showed how we
love each other in the ministry. I find the
Half- heart Hunting game exciting. Thank
you also for the merienda.
All these are blessings from the Lord. It
was bound to happen that we should see
each other these two consecutive months.
We should continue to inspire each other
and pray that many of the young would
get closer to God.
Hence, youth ministry is not only the
usual question of “who are active and who
are not” but rather it goes beyond that.
It’s a collaborative effort of the youth,
the clergy and the lay faithful. It’s about
commitment wherein each one realizes
the importance of the other to grow in the
ministry and not a self- serving ministry.

Archbishop Villegas recalled his
days as a seminarian when then
Msgr. San Diego was his professor in Canon Law and as an Altar
Server of the Bishop at the Manila Cathedral. He also recalled
how he assisted the latter in the
preparations for his ordination as
a bishop.
Bishop San Diego chose Servus
Dei (Servant of God, Lingkod ng
Diyos) as his motto. His being a
Servus Dei took different forms
in his life as a bishop. First, as a
missionary in Palawan, this meant
leaving his family and friends behind to preach the Good News
in Palawan, travelling by water,
traversing rough roads, and walking long distances. He became a
friend to everyone and to Mother
Nature. There he brought the love
of Jesus.
His being a Servus Dei brought
him to Laguna. There he became
a Shepherd, Father, and friend.
There he gave his time 24/7, 365
days; he was on-call and ready to
serve anytime because for him,
the most important thing that a
Shepherd could give to his flock
is his time.
He proved his obedience as a
Servus Dei when he was assigned
Bishop of Pasig. Despite saying
“Matanda na po ako” and “Mahina na po ang tuhod ko,” he accepted the assignment because
for him, Servus Dei meant total
obedience. He accepted the task
as a sign of obedience to the will
of God. The time came when he
had to turn over the care of the
Diocese of Pasig to Bishop Mylo.
Now his being a Servus Dei took
another form: hidden, secret, unknown service of God.
In his retirement, he continues
to be Servus Dei - loving, serving,
praying. But Bishop San Diego is
not the only Servant of God. We
are all servants of God. A Servus
Dei does not ask “why” when
God calls us to leave everything
behind and follow him. The only
question to ask is “When would
you want me to?” because the

Pasasalamat, focused on how the
laity must give thanksgiving to
God for his gifts, and that thanksgiving and faith are both man’s
response to God, that man’s experience of God’s love brings forth
joy in the hearts of men. Ambassadress Henrietta “Tita” De Villa
tackled Pagpapanibago, focusing
on how her renewed faith had influenced her and her family, and
the third was “A Heart-to-Heart
Talk with Bishop Mylo”- a talk
show-styled segment wherein the
guests shared their life changing
experiences and how their faith
helped them in recovering and
overcoming the obstacles.
Various performances were rendered by different schools and
organizations. The Sto. Tomas
de Villanueva Parochial School
grooved to different songs particularly the chicken dance that
made the energy of the attendees
go over the top. The Santolan
will of God is the only law that
every Servant of God follows.
Message of thanks
The Bishop expressed his gratitude first to the Lord God for calling him to share in the priesthood
of His Son Jesus Christ. He also
thanked his brother bishops especially Cardinal Tagle, Archbishop
Jose Palma and Archbishop Soc
Villegas who delivered the homily.
“Nasa kanila ang kinabukasan
ng Simbahan” were his words
referring to Cardinal Tagle and
Archbishop Villegas. He requested them to take good care of the
Church. He also thanked Bishop
Mylo Vergara who had always
supported him from the time he
retired as Bishop of Pasig, taking him to the hospital, always
visiting him, praying for him, and
requesting people to pray for him
also. He was so sure of two things:
Bishop Mylo would take care of
him in his death and would take
good care of the Diocese of Pasig.
He was also thankful to his batchmates who were also celebrating
their 50th anniversary: Bishop
Pedro Arigo of Puerto Princesa
and Bishop Deogracias Yniguez,
Bishop Emeritus of Caloocan,
He thanked the archbishops, the
bishops, the religious sisters, the
guests from Manila, Palawan,
San Pablo, Pasig, Guadalupe, and
San Felipe Neri, his family and
relatives who came to celebrate
with him.
His request to his fellow priests
was to deepen their prayer life
and to serve the Church as Good
Shepherds.
Bishop San Diego was most
grateful to the laity who were
present. They form an important
and major part of the Church. He
thanked the lay leaders for their
support to the Church. He was
glad that his 50th anniversary as
a priest was in the context of the
New Evangelization which is the
mission of the Church in the new
millennium. He exhorted everyone to speak and work towards
holiness. He also mentioned his
decision to donate all his gifts for
this occasion to the PCC scholarship fund. He believed that education is an important factor in alleviating our youth from poverty.
In closing, he borrowed the
words of the late Jaime Cardinal
Sin everytime the latter ended his
homily: “Remember, I love you
all very dearly. Cross my heart!”

High School students gave an energetic performance that nearly
brought the house down.
As preparations for the Eucharistic celebration were underway,
a very emotional dance number
was dedicated to the victims of
Super Typhoon Yolanda. Symbolic candle lighting was held in
solidarity with the victims. Lights
from cell phones, cameras, and
mini flashlights were offered
as light to help them get out of
the dark times. Adoration of the
Blessed Sacrament led by Bishop Mylo followed. A procession
along the vicinity of the Arena
was held after the Adoration. The
event was capped by a Eucharistic celebration presided by Bp.
Mylo together with the clergy of
the Diocese. The event ended at
3:00 am of the following day but
the faithful who attended were
still very much alive and ecstatic
while the El Shaddai Choir sent
them off.
