That’s What We Do.
Dear Friends,
As I reflect back on the success of 2010 and 2011 at Firelands Regional Medical Center, I am in awe of the support we
continue to receive from generous donors like you. We have witnessed continued national, state and local economic
challenges along with an unsure future for national healthcare reform as that legislation was passed in 2010. The Board
of Directors, Medical Staff, Volunteers and Employees at Firelands Regional Medical Center met these challenges as in
the past, with a keen focus on improving patient health status and compassionate delivery of service.
In the last year, this commitment to excellence has taken many forms and has been facilitated, in large part, by the
generosity of our donors and by the dedication of our outstanding Medical Staff members. In the following pages, you
will see exactly how your gifts to the Foundation for Firelands have allowed us to expand our services, to strengthen
our areas of medical expertise and knowledge, and to provide our region with the care our patients expect and deserve.
One example of this is our new Endocrine and Diabetes Center for Advanced Care, which brings to the region the
only Center of its kind led by an endocrinologist. Dr. Sabbagh, as the Center’s director, along with Firelands’ advance
practice nurse, diabetic educators and clinical nurses bring a wealth of clinical expertise in an area of health that
affects so many lives. In 2011, Firelands also unveiled the region’s only Spine Center, led by the area’s only two
neurosurgeons who themselves are surrounded by physiatrists, specially-trained physical therapists, and a host of
specially talented physicians from the Medical Staff, all of whom are focused on the evaluation and conservative
treatment of spinal injuries.
Firelands also continued its strong tradition of helping local physicians add new doctors to their practices in response
to the growing needs of the community and the desire for more citizens to seek high quality care closer to home.
Through this recruitment effort and many other endeavors outlined in this report, we have continued our Mission
to be responsive to the needs of everyone who is, and everyone who may become, a patient at Firelands Regional
Medical Center.
Along with local recognition in community surveys that singled out Firelands for excellent nursing care, physicians and
medical equipment, Firelands also was ranked #1 in the State of Ohio for vascular surgery, overall orthopedics including
spinal surgery, and in the top 5% in the nation for patient safety for the second year in a row, among many other
certifications and accreditations. In addition, Firelands Regional Medical Center remains the largest employment
provider in Erie County, making us a true “economic engine” in our community.
Yet, all this would not be possible without our donors, who are even more important during these trying economic
times. Your continued philanthropy shows that you believe in what we do and who we are at Firelands Regional
Medical Center. Your generosity shows that you wish to help us grow in our vision to be the healthcare provider of
choice in our region. And your philanthropy shows that you care about keeping your health care locally-governed,
while assuring that the counties we serve continue to have access to state-of-the-art medical technology and

The Foundation for Firelands has established the Heritage Society to recognize donors who have given
cumulatively or plan to give $15,000 or more in support of Firelands Regional Medical Center since
December 1, 2005. The Foundation created this prestigious society to honor those philanthropists who
remain committed to the mission of Firelands Regional Medical Center to be the provider of choice for
people in our community and to the health and wellness of its residents. Membership criteria includes
gifts made annually, gifts made in will or trust, gifts made to initiatives and appeals, gifts of insurance
and gifts made to capital campaigns since the inception of The Foundation for Firelands in 2005.
Donors who gain entry into this society will be recognized publicly with a plaque to be displayed
in the hallway across from the Dorn Outpatient Services Department. Those who wish to remain
anonymous will be omitted from this plaque and from any publications, upon their request. Additionally,
The Foundation for Firelands will host special benefactor events for members of the Heritage Society.

Fundraising: Caddyshack Open
The Foundation for Firelands hosted the “Caddyshack Open” on June 27, 2011 as an ode to the comedic golf movie starring
Bill Murray and a fun way to raise money for its Cancer Program Fund, benefiting cancer patients at Firelands Regional
Medical Center. In all, 124 golfers took to the links at Plum Brook Country Club to club out cancer in brightly-colored golf
attire reminiscent of the event’s namesake. The golfers were immersed in references to the movie, with gophers appearing on
holes and a friendly, yet aloof Bill Murray “Carl Spackler” look-alike posing for pictures. In total, the day raised net proceeds
of $23,000.00 for The Foundation for Firelands Cancer Fund, a fund which helps people to receive care and treatment for
cancer in the Erie County area.
Though all reported a fun day, the golfers and sponsors were most excited about what the day meant to the Firelands Cancer
Center and to people undergoing treatment for cancer diagnoses. One sponsor, First American Title, took the cancer benefit
to heart, by forgoing their sponsor golf round and instead, offering it to a patient of University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center
at Firelands Regional Medical Center. When Kim Schreiner, the director of the cancer center initially approached patient
Richard Michael, he was hesitant to play because he had not golfed since receiving his cancer diagnosis the previous year.
At first he declined the offer, but called back a week later, renewed by a few practice golf outings and ready to play in the
“Caddyshack Open”.
Aside from benefitting the cancer center where Richard was being treated,
he also found the outing to be special because it was only the second
time he had played Plum Brook Country Club’s course.
“I usually play Wousickett. It was nice to get to play Plum Brook,” he said.
Richard played with a foursome that included a Clyde High School golfer
who also served as the team’s caddy for the day. Richard was impressed
with his swing and the length of the young man’s drive, but was even
more impressed with the group’s overall spirit. He said, “(My favorite
part was the) camaraderie. It is always fun to play with people. We had
fun. That’s all that matters.”
We’d like to thank the “Caddyshack Open” committee, which included
Tom Bollenbacher, Alex Cruey, Robin Grathwol, Megan Hanley, Peggy
Hassinger, Tracy Lucas, Diana Lundy, Dan Moncher, Eric Morgan, Craig
Stahl and Alice Springer.

Fundraising: Salute!
Back by popular demand, The Foundation for Firelands hosted the second annual Salute! wine-tasting event at Sortino’s
Little Italy Ristorante on November 6, 2011. 170 friends of Firelands Regional Medical Center attended the afternoon of
fabulous food and delectable wines from Adler Fels Winery. All the proceeds from the day’s festivities benefitted the
Firelands Regional Medical Center Acute Inpatient Rehab Unit, the sole provider of acute inpatient rehabilitation services
in a five-county region and rated as one of the nation’s top 100 programs based on its excellent ratings for patient
outcomes by the Uniform Data System for Medical Rehabilitation.
The unit helps patients who have suffered brain injuries, strokes, orthopedic surgeries and other physical and mental
setbacks relearn the skills necessary to use their bodies and minds again and become as independent as possible,
attaining the best quality of life. Both George and Jim Sortino, owners of Sortino’s Little Italy Ristorante, along with
Thom Siegel of Adler Fels Wines, graciously participated in the event with the attitude that helping others is always good
business and that Firelands Regional Medical Center provides the community with an invaluable rehabilitation resource.
As if the food and wine weren’t enough for Medical Center friends that afternoon, a trip to Sonoma County was auctioned
off to one lucky bidder and several friends also went home with a variety of festive holiday and wine-related items. In
a departure from last year, the event also included two raffles featuring a bottle of wine covered in $55,000 worth of
lottery tickets as well as two bottles of Limited Edition Marilyn Monroe wine, Sortino’s Little Italy gift certificates and
memorabilia. In all, the fun event raised more than $9,000 for the Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit at Firelands Regional
Medical Center. Salute!

Fundraising: That 70’s and 80’s Party
That 70’s and 80’s Party made a groovy comeback this year at Kalahari Resort on August 20, 2011. Guests were encouraged
to dress like their favorite 70’s or 80’s icon… and most left no holds barred. The Retro-style pizza party got everyone in
the spirit with disco and 80’s rock as well as a spiffy silent auction. The event raised more than $18,000 to support the Boys
& Girls Club of Erie County as well as services to benefit pediatric patients at Firelands Regional Medical Center. This fun,
light-hearted event brought out the kid in everyone and helped kids throughout our community to maintain healthy, active
and safe lifestyles. Isn’t that groovy, baby?
Fundraising: Fashion Week, Sandusky Style
Fashion and fundraising came together at the third annual Fashion Week, Sandusky Style event on September 29, 2011 at Plum
Brook Country Club. This year’s event drew more than 250 people for an evening that included both silent and live auctions
and a lively fashion show that still has people talking. Event planners offered more than 100 silent auction items and more
than ten coveted live auction items including Lasik eye surgery, a Colorado ski trip, an RV trip and fabulous private dinners
from The Kitchen’s Bounty, J Bistro and Marcy Manion. After a tapas-style cocktail party and dinner, guests were treated to
a high-energy fashion show featuring fashions from Belle Soiree, Sawmill Creek Shops and Erik’s Clothing for Men. As if the
vendors didn’t bring enough fanfare, the crowd went wild over “celebrity” models Bryan Kasper, Dr. Scott Campbell, Dr.
Marsha Cooper, Dr. Marty Ryu and Wendy Kromer, to name a few. In all, the glamorous night raised more than $57,000
for the Firelands Regional Medical Center Breast Cancer Fund. And, the fun continued all week with the first ever
weeklong fashion event that incorporated discounts and specials from area retailers like Bertsch Jewelers, Barnes Nursery,
K & K Interiors and Sawmill Creek Shops.

On August 27, 2010, the Firelands Heart Institute Cardiovascular Diagnostic Center was formally designated The Don J.
Young Cardiovascular Diagnostic Center in recognition of the leadership and vision of Don J. Young, MD, FACC. The
community and its medical professionals lost an extraordinary member and friend on August 31, 2010 with the passing
of Dr. Young.
Dr. Young’s family graciously agreed to a memorial service hosted by the Medical Center to allow his colleagues the
opportunity to remember and pay tribute to Dr. Young’s legacy.
The following is an open letter written by Charles A. Stark, President and CEO of Firelands which was shared in the

Don J. Young, MD, passed away after a courageous battle against cancer. In my 25 years of healthcare experience
Dr. Young sticks out as a giant among men.
Dr. Young, from my observations, had that unique combination of intelligence and foresight on how to apply that
intelligence. He was warm and open with his patients, yet shared the information they needed to hear…even
when it may have been difficult to hear. He was kind to our staff members and always open to sharing ideas and
having a conversation about family and goings on. Dr. Young was also an avid reader who often times would drop
off articles with notes that said, “Chuck I think you should read this one.” or “Chuck I came across this article and
thought of you.” That always brightened my day!
Yes, Dr. Young was a giant among men in my book. A real example of the traditional physician with the skills and
values we seek from our own personal physician.
At the suggestion of Dr. Young’s partners at North Ohio Heart Center, both NOHC and Firelands Regional
Medical Center came together to express our gratitude to Dr. Young for his vision and many years of service to
our community. Both NOHC and we agreed it was only fitting to dedicate the cardiovascular lab in Dr. Young’s
honor. This dedication was shared with Dr. Young in his home by Dr. McGuinn on the Saturday before Dr. Young
passed away. While I was out of town with my family and unable to join Dr. McGuinn and Dr. Young, I understand
Dr. Young was quite moved by this expression of gratitude.
While Dr. Young has passed away, his spirit will live with us for many, many years. I know he loved dark
chocolate and I know each time in the future that I enjoy a piece of that wonderful candy I will enjoy it along
with fond memories of what Dr. Young gave to me personally, as a professional working towards the same goal,
and to what Dr. Young represented to our community….a giant among men!

Firelands Regional Medical Center – Auxiliary
In the past year, the Firelands Auxiliary has generously
donated their time and resources to pursue the vision
of Firelands Regional Medical Center. During 2010, the
dedicated women and men of the Auxiliary purchased
state-of-the-art diagnostic items for the Digestive
Health Center, featured in another article in this report.
Additionally, the Firelands Auxiliary helped to
purchase a cardiac apnea monitor for Obstetrics and
an ultrasound machine for Labor and Delivery. Their
generosity also allowed for Firelands Corporate Health
Center to purchase a spirometry system to test lung
functioning in patients and an oxygen concentrator to
aid patients in the inpatient psychiatric unit at Firelands
Regional Medical Center. In all, the support of the
Auxiliary in 2010 totals $110,000.
We thank all who support and are involved in the
Firelands Auxiliary. Their events, programs, gift shop
sales and financial assistance significantly contribute
to providing the most cutting-edge, quality healthcare
to all who are served by Firelands Regional Medical

The Firelands Auxiliary wishes to extend a heartfelt ‘Thank You’ to our
employees, their families and friends who faithfully shop in the Gift
Shops and special sales. The support of our regular customers and their
willingness to spread the word of the great merchandise in all the Gift
Shops and our book, jewelry, handbag and flower sales (to name a few)
are the lifeblood of our success. Through the generosity of Firelands family,
the Auxiliary generates and contributes approximately $100,000 annually
back to the Medical Center with which medical equipment, supplies and

ManoScan360 for
Esophageal Manometry
Anyone who has had heartburn knows how frustrating a
digestive medical issue can be. Now, through the generosity
of the Firelands Auxiliary, Firelands Regional Medical Center
can offer its digestive patients a less invasive and more
accurate way to diagnose problems from heartburn to
swallowing disorders. The only machine of its kind in the
region, the Sierra Scientific ManoScan360 for Esophageal
Manometry was completely funded by the Auxiliary to help
physicians examine the esophagus and stomach with eight
times more sensors than their previous equipment.
According to the American Gastroenterologic
Association, the esophageal motility study conducted
by the ManoScan360 is the first recommended step in
diagnosing a wide array of swallowing and digestive
disorders. Furthermore, the procedure, which took about
45 minutes to complete in the past, now takes just 10
minutes with the new machine. This drastically shorter
time frame means less discomfort for the patient and
more time for the physician to accurately diagnose the
images gathered by the machine.
The Auxiliary was able to make this truly revolutionary
donation through the generosity of their gift shop patrons
at Main Campus, South Campus and the Atrium shops,
along with special event fundraising. The money earned
and donated by the Auxiliary helps to keep Firelands
Regional Medical Center at the forefront of medical
technology and diagnostics.
The Firelands Auxiliary is made up of 165 men and
women who volunteer their time to promote community

Local Cancer Doctors Give Back
to Their Community
Drs. Reese, Gudena and Schuster of University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center at
Firelands Regional Medical Center care for hundreds of local patients throughout the
year. Yet, their community care doesn’t stop at cancer treatment. As part of a local cancer
center, the doctors at UH Seidman Cancer Center at Firelands feel compelled to use their
knowledge-base to help not only cancer patients, but the community at large.
Throughout the year the doctors participate in various presentations, talks, screenings
and other community educational endeavors to help make people more aware of their
health and of the resources available at Firelands Regional Medical Center. In 2010 and
2011, the doctors have engaged in talks on women’s reproductive cancers, breast cancer,
prostate cancer, new technologies and treatments of various cancers as well as many other
important, life-saving topics. Additionally, Dr. Amy Reese recently spoke to the Kiwanis
Club about her role as a mission physician in Haiti, helping the people still ravaged by
disease and injury from an earthquake several years ago. The doctors also participated
in screenings for breast cancer and skin cancer and conducted a series of informational
sessions on colorectal cancer.
For these physicians, the call to care for and treat patients means also responding
to the needs of the broader community to help others prevent cancer diagnoses and
to raise awareness about certain environmental risk factors. The doctors say their
involvement in these programs fosters a sense of true community and helps them to
better understand the population they treat and interact with every day.

Community Members Helping Others
VacationLand Federal Credit Union
When Kevin Ralofsky came to VacationLand Federal Credit Union five years ago as its CEO, one of his first questions
to his employees was, “Are we making a profound impact in our community? If not, why?” Today, the answer to this
question is a resounding “Yes!” Ralofsky and his team have partnered with The Foundation for Firelands to achieve
one of their community outreach goals - to become involved in a cause that can serve all aspects of the community.
For VacationLand and The Foundation for Firelands, this cause is the Firelands Breast Cancer Fund, which helps
to provide mammograms for individuals who are either uninsured or underinsured; and, provides transportation,
education, and therapeutic treatments for local breast cancer patients. Though the partnership between VacationLand
and The Foundation for Firelands is still in its infancy, Ralofsky and his employees have launched a “Pink Card” program
to help foster this relationship and help breast cancer patients with little effort on the part of those who wish to
participate. Each “Pink Card” that is issued provides a monetary donation to The Firelands Breast Cancer Fund and
can be obtained by simply transferring any balance you have on an existing credit card.
This credit union is no stranger to helping others. VacationLand Federal Credit Union was founded on a spirit of shared
responsibility for others as General Motors workers pooled their money to form a means of borrowing and saving
amongst each other. For Ralofsky, this spirit of camaraderie means that VacationLand must maintain its commitment
to helping the community in order to preserve the legacy of those who founded the credit union.
Ralofsky also said that cancer was a natural impetus for most of his employees because almost everyone has been
touched by some form of cancer in their lives or the lives of people they love. With a nearly 87% female workforce at
VacationLand Federal Credit Union, a breast cancer fund seemed logical and emotionally moving to the VacationLand
team. This is especially true in Erie County, where breast cancer rates continue to be among the highest in the state,
according to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
When asked about why the credit union decided on a pink card for local
breast cancer patients as a way to give back, Ralofsky said, “If everybody
does their part, we can really make a profound difference in the community.
The Foundation (for Firelands) has done that and we wanted to be a part
of that.”

The Randolph J. and Estelle M.
Dorn Foundation
Firelands Regional Medical Center is continuously looking
for ways to use donor dollars to advance the knowledge,
resources and healing capacities of those who care for our
community. SimMan®, a life-size intubatable mannequin
with a computerized graphical user interface, became part
of the Firelands Regional Medical Center family through a
grant by the Randolph J. and Estelle M. Dorn Foundation
in 2006 and continues to be effectively used to teach
clinical and decision making skills. This incredible
technology allows medical and nursing students to develop
their proficiency in appropriate responses, while in a
controlled environment with instructors on-site. SimMan® allows instructors to program numerous scenarios which
allow students to become competent before they provide care for a real patient. The simulated learning provided
by SimMan® assists the medical care team members at Firelands to achieve levels of communication, training and
teamwork that are critical to a “culture of safety.”
In 2011, employees undergoing continuing education for respiratory therapy had to assess an emergent situation where
SimMan® came to the Emergency Room under respiratory distress. Following specific protocol based on the situation,
the therapists along with a “doctor” intubated SimMan® and stabilized his breathing by placing him on a ventilator.
Since his debut, SimMan® has been used to help the Respiratory Therapy department and other Medical Center
departments to conduct training and education sessions in real-life scenarios.
We continue to be grateful to the Randolph J. and Estelle M. Dorn Foundation for their generous grant and leadership
in supporting patient safety and clinical competence in our community.
S & H Blinds and Floors
Ed Opfer, owner of S & H Blinds and Floors in Sandusky, knows the importance of
local businesses caring for and giving back to the community. His company, started
in 1947 by the previous owner, has been a mainstay in local interior decorating and
incorporates a family aspect that many larger, competing companies lack today. With
three out of the seven employees boasting the last name “Opfer”, S & H Blinds is a family operation. This commitment to
family and to the community led the owners and employees of S & H Blinds to become lasting donors to The Foundation
for Firelands Breast Cancer Fund.
Ed Opfer and his family came to The Foundation for Firelands in 2009, wanting to contribute something to help others
and wanting to make an impact on a disease that affects so many people in this area.
“(Breast cancer) is something very consistent,” said Opfer. “If I had a daughter or wife going through it, I think it would
be very traumatic.”
Opfer adds that he sees the good Firelands Regional Medical Center does for the community and feels like the funds his
company contributes go to good use to help purchase state-of-the-art equipment or provide therapeutic treatments to treat
people here at home.
The S & H Blinds and Floors donation to the Breast Cancer Fund is only in its third year, but Opfer plans to continue his
company’s commitment to support Firelands Regional Medical Center well into the future.
“I think people are entitled to their health,” he said. “What we are doing is part of our Christian values to help others.”

Fitzthum Boutique
8,000 people on Facebook like her hair bows and chic baby clothes, and Brandy Fitzthum, owner
of Fitzthum Boutique, is using these 8,000 people to make a difference in the lives of breast cancer
patients right here at Firelands Regional Medical Center. During October, National Breast Cancer
Awareness Month, Brandy used her boutique’s Facebook page to gather items and bids for a
large-scale online auction. Other vendors from around the country contributed more than 50 items
like nursing covers, baby blankets, toys, clothes and more to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. So, why did Fitzthum choose the Firelands Breast Cancer Fund? For the young mom of three, the
answer was easy, “There is somebody that needs help. It is about helping people who are in an
unfortunate situation.”
The Fitzthum family is no stranger to need, either. Brandy and her husband, Tony, decided to
give back to Firelands Regional Medical Center after the two were helped in early 2011 by a fund
established by employees to help employees in need at the hospital. Both are Firelands employees
and both underwent serious medical setbacks at the same time. With that in mind, the Fitzthums
decided to help others who might be in a similar situation and to give locally, right where they
were helped. Yet, the Fitzthum Boutique auction was not all local… and that helped them to raise
money very quickly via the internet.
The auctions garnered so much attention
from various regions of the country in part
because the vendors help each other’s causes
on a continual basis. For Fitzthum this means
that when others are raising money for a
cause, she donates and in turn, other vendors
donated to her auction for the Firelands
Breast Cancer Fund. In addition, most of the
people bidding were mothers, grandmothers
or other people with young children, able
to relate to a cause that strikes women
regardless of age.
“People were bidding higher than the actual
value (of the items),” Fitzthum commented.
“Mostly because they knew it was for a
good cause and they wanted to help.”
