2006
It has been great to be back at Archdale, to see old
friends, and meet so many new people. Meredith
and I have both enjoyed our time with you. The
29th of January was our last Sunday during Dana’s
renewal leave and I am glad I was available to help.
Archdale is a great church. It’s run by lay people. I haven’t had to do much
except preach and visit in the hospital. Everything seems to be running well.
This is a sign of a good discipleship.
When I was pastor here (1980-1986), there was a Food Lion in the Kmart
shopping center. I had stopped by to get some groceries and was waiting at
the check out. The lady in front of me paid for her groceries and started out
the door. She had left her wallet on the counter. I grabbed it, ran out the
door, and caught her, returning the wallet. She thanked me and then she noticed who I was. “You are the preacher at Archdale UMC aren’t you?” “Yes
ma’am, I am.” “Well, you had to return my wallet didn’t you? You’re a
preacher and you had to do it. But, thank you anyway.”
I went back to my groceries trying to figure all of that out. This is what I
shared on the following Sunday about it.
I am paid to be “good”, so people expect it and don’t think much about it when
I do my “job” right. However, if it had been a regular church member, a lay
person who returned the wallet, it would have made a much different impression. Lay people are good for “nothing.” They aren’t paid to be “good.”
Director of
Lay Ministries
Marilyn Holtham
MHgifts@aol.com
There is a lot of truth in the play on words. If the preacher visits a first time
worship visitor, that person is likely to return 50% of the time. If a lay person, a “good” for nothing person visits that first time visitor, it is 80% likely
that they will return.
Secretary

It appears to me that Archdale UMC has a lot of “good” for nothing members
and that’s why their church is so great!

I want to thank all those who helped me do my “paid” work here: Debbi Colón,
Pat McKim, Cheryl Traylor, Denise Warren, and Russ Carr (who cleaned up
all of that popcorn in the sanctuary). I am especially grateful to Harold
Shives. Harold and I have worked together in two districts but this time I got
to work with him as my boss!
We’ll be back because our daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Todd Messner
are visiting Archdale. They live on Alison Lane and are expecting their first
child, so we’ll be back soon!
We love you all. Thanks for a great 9 weeks.
Peace be with you.

FEBRUARY 19TH
with SINGER, STORYTELLER, ED KILBOURNE
Prayer changes lives! Thank you to each person who has responded to a life
changing relationship with one of our children or youth! Thank you also to those of
you who have taken a second person so that child/youth might have a mentor.
Our banquet will be a celebration of these relationships and the power of what God can do in our
lives. Too many times in our lives today we are isolated by only our own generation. This time
together crosses those generations and reminds us what we can become together.
Mentors, please invite your child/youth to meet you on Sunday, February 19th at 5:00pm in the
Fellowship Hall for a time of good food, laughter, and a reminder of our baptism. Ed Kilbourne
brings a wonderful blend of storytelling and music that will have us laughing and remembering who
God calls us to be. Mentors of young children are invited to extend the invitation to a parent to
join their child as well. A love offering will be taken to offset our cost of the evening. Thank you for
all you are and will become to our children!
