Campbells
Welcome
C
ampbells of Leyburn is an award
winning, independent family
owned supermarket dating back to
1868. Situated at the heart of the
ancient town, its unique character
has developed over almost 150 years
of serving the local community, and
the many visitors that flock to the
area from every corner of the world.
Once you set foot in the store you can
appreciate what thousands of customers
have already discovered. This is a gourmet
experience, where artisan style-producers
using authentic ingredients have
demonstrated innovation, alongside a
range of Yorkshire and locally sourced
foods and grocery items. A vast array of
stock cupboard ingredients are a staple at
Campbell’s so you don’t have to venture
anywhere else!
Just a Little Imagination
F
resh fruit and vegetables are naturally
key ingredients in any kitchen. With a
little homemade creativity and by
choosing some of the exotic choices from
the large selection in season, you can
make any everyday meal just as magical as
special occasions.
To take advantage of freshness, don’t buy
on low price alone as it doesn’t pay to
buy more vegetables than you can
properly store in your refrigerator. You
don’t have to stick to tradition where the
weather is concerned, crunchy winter
salads are just as appetising and
appealing for a quick lunch especially
when accompanied by some of
Campbell’s Deli products.
Campbell’s buys fruit and vegetables daily
from a Yorkshire supplier so you can be
sure that they have you the customer at
the heart of everything they offer, so if
you want a particular fruit or vegetable to
try out a new recipe or for an occasion,
just ask and they will do their very best to
supply what you want.
For a seasonal gin and tonic why not
experiment with a citrus selection to
include: lemon, lime, orange, pink
grapefruit and red grapefruit for a
refreshing change.
Embracing Gourmet Breads
and Patisserie Products
W
hen bread is fresh from the oven
and prepared and baked by
experts, it can be delicious. However,
there is a world of difference in taste and
texture between a crusty white roll and a
soft brown wholemeal bap - and they are
just two of the numerous varieties of rolls
baked in Britain. Rolls, in their turn, are
one of about twenty different types of
bread.
In order to give our customers the widest
possible choice, we source our bread
from local artisan bakers with proven
track records for quality and delivery. You
know when you are near our bread area
because you catch the delicious aroma of
freshly-baked bread. All you have to do is
decide whether you would prefer a
barrel, a batch, a bloomer, a cob or
a cottage.
When local artisans and food
manufacturers can demonstrate quality,
we will always support them and the
shelves are stacked with products from
some of Yorkshire’s finest. You can stock
up with classics like Cockett’s
Wensleydale Fruit Cake, Yorkshire Tea
Cakes, Bootham’s cakes and Whitby Plum
Loaves.
If you feel really indulgent, you can
home in on Cartmel’s Sticky Toffee
Pudding or pamper yourself and your
guests with the range of classic desserts
made by Country Puddings. These are
perfect for special occasions and ideal for
filling up empty tummies and keeping
their owners happy.
It’s a Matter of Choice
B
oasting a fine in-house butchery
department, Campbell’s believe in
supplying customers with expertly
prepared quality meat. The butchery
team are passionate about serving the
highest standard of food and that is why
they deal directly with farmers to source
rare breeds and bid fearlessly for award
winners at local shows and sales.
Campbell’s is keen to support small
British farmers who are committed to
rearing animals naturally as well as
demonstrating traceability. Close links
with the farming community means that
free range and rare breed livestock can all
be sourced to meet customer
requirements. Campbell’s aim is to offer
and deliver what customers want,
providing top quality meat to discerning
cooks.
For special occasions or just for personal
consultation, the in-house team can offer
the right advice to help customers select
the best cuts for the purpose and then
prepare those meats to the recipe
specification.
In house, Campbell’s produce ham on
the bone, roast pork and beef, shoulder
bacon, coated chicken breasts and
barbecued chicken as well as Chinese
plum duck breast, Mexican madness belly
pork, Greek passion chicken, chicken
fillets, sausages – meatballs, mustard and
marmalade ham as well as cloves and
juniper berry.
Seek out a Special Fish Dish
W
hen Doug Campbell decided to
give our customers access to the
added variety of fresh and smoked fish,
his first step was to identify companies
that could guarantee the consistent
quality we want our customers to be able
to take for granted. More than a third of
our suppliers are local artisans and small
companies but our policy is to seek out
the best, no matter where they are based
or what size they are.
While we went no further than
Blubberhouses, near Harrogate, in North
Yorkshire for MacKenzies Smokehouse,
we just about topped and tailed Great
Britain for two of our other leading
suppliers:– Inverawe Smokehouse, which
supplies smoked salmon and other
traditional Scottish produce from its
premises in Argyll; and Tregida whose
smokehouse lies at the other end of the
country in the countryside of North
Cornwall, providing us with a range of
more than 30 varieties of fresh fish.
Campbell’s ensures that there is a wide
choice of fish available in store. Tregida
ensures that there are no artificial
additives or flavourings just sea salt and
oak. All smoked products are made by
hand from start to finish, rejecting the
conveyor belt process of many large
companies. Tregida has gone out of its
way to ensure the original smoking
apparatus has been retained together
with the techniques to ensure they
produce an authentic, tasty and succulent
end product.
Brief Encounters
F
resh in store is the finest range of
continental artisan cheeses both soft
and hard mainly made from goats, cows
and ewes milk, and sourced from France,
Italy and Spain. They nestle nicely
alongside the vast choice of English
cheeses from Wensleydale Creamery,
Swaledale Cheese and not forgetting
Yorkshire Cheeses including Mrs Bell’s
Blue.
Campbell’s now has over 100 varieties of
English and Continental cheese to choose
from.
Just a brief encounter allows you to check
out cheese texture, taste and strength of
flavour, and with a little more help, even
the stage of maturity.
If you are planning a cheeseboard and
you are still finding it difficult to make a
selection when there are so many to
choose from, then don’t hesitate to ask
our staff for advice. As a general rule,
however, select up to four varieties, so
you can vary textures and flavours to
meet all tastes. For example, a hard
sheep’s cheese, a soft goat’s cheese, a
hard cow’s cheese and a blue cheese will
provide all the contrast you need.
Offer a good selection of breads and
crackers too - and don’t forget to vary
their tastes and textures.
What you do to add the finishing touches
to the platter is up to you and what
catches your eye in our delicatessen. For
example, you could opt for a tart chutney,
spicy mustard or sweet preserve, go
international with balls of dried figs,
Spanish dried muscatel grapes or
medjool dates or keep it simple with
slices of fresh, crisp apple or other
seasonal fruit.
Delicious things to Eat
I
f you have ever wondered about the
word Delicatessen, it first appeared in
England in 1889 and is a derivative of the
plural German derivative delikatesse,
which literally means delicious things to
eat.
Stand in front of our Deli counter and
you will see that we took this meaning
literally. You are confronted by a vibrant
and colourful range of products that
make you hungry wherever you look and
can transport you in a moment back to
half forgotten holidays in Spain or Italy.
As always, our suppliers include small
businesses and artisans, some of whom
produce our Deli products. The full
delicious range includes, terrines, pates,
cooked meats and delicious steak, pork
and apple, as well as pork and pickle pies
made from locally sourced meats.
Alongside them are cooked meats and
delicacies from Italy, Spain and France.
For an authentic Italian Platter, select
prosciutto, Italian Salamis, Buffalo
Mozzarella, artichoke hearts and sundried
peppers, boscailo olives, sun blushed
tomatoes, rocket and Sardinian flat bread
(known as Carta of Musica). A veritable
choice of olives, peppers, pickles and
stuffed red and yellow peppers adorn the
shelves and if you enjoy International
cooking there is a huge choice of spices,
tapas, wines and sherries, olive oil and
flavoured vinegars, pate, seafood, tuna
and anchovies for the true taste of that
offered in Spanish coastal resorts.
The Italians and Spanish are past masters
at preserving food either under oil,
floating in brine or packed in salt. A quick
visit to our deli, will help you stock up on
foods for impromptu feasts.
Full of Spirit
W
ith a reputation for taste and flavour
Campbell’s wine cellar and spirits
department is growing beyond measure.
Thought to have the biggest range in the
region, Campbell’s reputation continues
to go from strength to strength. More
than 150 malts and other spirits adorn
the shelves and we will continue to
search for new and exciting tastes from
wine growers across the world as well as
smaller producers to ensure that he can
showcase the best he can offer. There are
some real gems hidden away Rioja for
Spanish wine lovers, Vintage Bordeaux
and German wines, not forgetting some
little known British blends.
The best dinner parties are enhanced by
quality conversations and it is during these
occasions that a perfect meal is
accompanied by a perfect drink that
captures that very moment. To start the
evening consider a Vintage Champagne
followed by a choice from our excellent
red and white wine cellar, and to capture
the mood at the end of the evening, finish
off with Campbell’s divine chocolates or
mints and a choice of Port, Armagnac
Brandy or perhaps a winter warming
Liqueur.
Campbell’s fine wine department upstairs
offers some excellent buys many at less
than £10 each, while downstairs in the
store we stock many popular brands at
discount prices. You are spoilt for choice
with so many award winning wines to
select from.
Real Ales
There have also been exciting
developments in our beer section, where
we have always aimed to leave beer lovers
spoiled for choice. As a business that is
passionate about supporting local
suppliers, we have been delighted to
support the vibrant new generation of
micro brewers emerging in the Dales.
Semer Water and Wensleydale Gold from
Wensleydale Brewing Co and Askrigg Ale
and Butter Tubs from Yorkshire Dales
Brewing shout their local origins from
our shelves –where they sit alongside
established local favourites like Masham
Glory and Old Peculier from Theakstons
and Black Sheep and Golden Sheep from
Black Sheep Brewery.
Sweet Indulgence
C
ampbell’s stocks a huge assortment
of biscuits, delicate cakes and
chocolate assortments to suit every taste,
including delicious dipping amaretti
fingers to enjoy with a latte, cappuccino
or even an expresso. Whether it is fudge,
toffee, caramels, honey comb or nougat,
they are available in plentiful supply for
sweet lovers to tickle their taste buds.
To celebrate those very special occasions,
choose from an outstanding array to
cover every chocolate eventuality. You can
say it all with chocolates, but for extra
impact why not add them to a beautifully
decorated hamper.
Present Finding Gifts?
If you can’t decide what to buy your
friends and family on birthdays or special
occasions, or worry whether you have
made the right choice, take the stress out
of decision making by choosing
Campbell’s vouchers so they can make
their own selection from any department.
The vouchers can be made up to any
value in multiples of £5.
Made in Yorkshire
Y
orkshire people are not only
immensely proud of their culture and
rich heritage but also their home grown
food and drink, the historic centre for
many breweries including Black Sheep,
Theakston and Yorkshire Dales Brewing
Company, a traditional drink made from
the enormously popular Yorkshire Tea
and ginger beer. Other mouth-watering
items include Wensleydale Cheeses, made
lovingly from traditional recipes handed
down over many generations, at their
Creamery in Hawes. There are other
popular local cheeses, demonstrating the
fantastic choice you have in Yorkshire.
The relationship between food and its
culture are so evident in this Gastro
heartland where there is so much good
food and drink on offer.
Gluten Free
and more manufacturers and producers are
creating strong branded products that look
and taste the same as mainstream items.
Brands to look out for include Nairns free
range real porridge oats, Isabel’s Yorkshire
Pudding Mix, Rude Health Corn Thins,
Findlater’s Award Winning Gluten Free
Bread and much more.
A fast growing market, Gluten free products
serve those people who are Coeliac, and
who have a life-long intolerance to the
protein. Some people might prefer the new
products for other reasons but until now,
the choice has been very limited. Now more
To make up a delicious cheese board,

bread from our artisan baker, Taste of
Yorkshire cheesy nibbles, add local
pickles, blends of mustard relish or
chutney, and to finish off, Campbells of

shortbread, is usually a fitting and
popular choice. For afternoon tea, you
can’t go far wrong with the scrumptious
Yorkshire jams and honey that make up
just some of the sweet products, to be
served alongside clotted cream, fresh
cakes, scones and fancies.
Tastes and Tours of the
World’s Wineries
O
f all our innovations since the turn
of the century, none has had a wider
impact than our Wine Club. Launched to
complement ambitious plans for our 1st
Floor wine department, it has become an
institution in its own right, attracting
accolades and visitors from far outside
our traditional catchment area.

run guided tours of international wine
growing regions or famous wineries and
hold hotly-contested quizzes. By Easter
2015, members meeting ‘Upstairs at
Campbells’ had ‘toured’ and tasted their
way through South Africa, Australia, Chile
and France.
The Club has always met in our Wine
Department, where more than 1,000
wines provide the perfect ambience.
Members still gather in the same area but
it has now been restyled to create a
lounge and bar area that makes the
perfect home base for a thriving Wine
Club.
There is much more to come
including other special events such as
Port, Champagne and Whisky Tastings.

Enjoy Your Visit
T
his short brochure introduces you to some of the
products that enable us to offer a more varied and
enjoyable shopping experience than the average
supermarket.
We are aware, of course, that this historic market town
and the glorious country that surrounds it are also
part of the package that makes us different.
A famous short walk – with disabled access - that
follows a 2-mile limestone scar along the valley side,
the Shawl was first laid out as a walk in 1842. It runs
through typical Dales’ pastureland and ancient
woodland to open up stunning views across the valley
to Pen Hill.
We have customers who combine a shopping trip to
stock up with wine or rare breed meat with a walk to
their favourite waterfall or panoramic view. Others are
keen walkers.
Romantics believe its name derives from a shawl
dropped by Mary Queen of Scots when she was
attempting to escape from imprisonment in Bolton
Castle; prosaically, it probably comes from the word
‘shieling’, which means a shepherd’s hut.
This final page introduces the Leyburn Shawl as a
reminder that a shopping trip to Campbells of Leyburn
is a visit to some of the most spectacular scenery in
England:-
This perfect introduction to the wonders of
Wensleydale starts just a short stroll from our store.
Why not make the time to enjoy it next time you shop
at Campbells of Leyburn?
