A RIZONA D RIVING AND C ARRIAGE S OCIETY N EWSLET TER A PRIL 2015 V OLUME 12, I SSUE M ESSAGE F ROM THE P RESIDENT BY D ANA M OORE I NSIDE THIS ISSUE : Hello everyone, it's time again for another new month. The weather is perfect to be out doing what we love the most, driving. The first quarter of the year is already behind us. January brought us ADT #1, which had great attendance. The Arizona CDE was the big event for March. April will have ADT # 2, May ADT #3. Attendance seems to be up this year for the first 2 events. The AZ CDE was a great event this year, as always. Thank you for all the committee members and, of course, the volunteers that made this event a huge success. The hazard contest was won by Peggy Jaeger's Minion creation. Congratulations, everyone loved it. I want to remind everyone to plan on making a weekend stay for ADT #2. We will be having a general membership meeting Saturday evening after the ADT. Gary Gang will be giving a presentation on carriage maintenance. The Club will be buying pizza for everyone. Bring your own chair please. Sunday, will be a rerun day on the hazards. We will have timers to time the hazards to see if you can better your time by taking a different routes or the same one. Hope you make it a weekend of fun and driving. See you there. For 1990 we brought in Mickey Bowen as our head judge and Bill Gorham was still the TD. Jill Ryder began her journeys west to be our Scorer and Mary Jane Atonna was the Show Secretary. Here are a few shots from that year: Allen Funderburgh has been one of our staunchest supporters and competitors over many years. His skill led him to compete and win a national singles championship a few years after this photo. Both Mary Jane and he grew into the sport when we both lived near each other in South Phoenix at that time. Hardy Zantke, from California, has also supported our event and the sport of carriage driving for many years - first as a competitor, then as a judge and also with the national American Driving Society. Hardy drove in our competitions for many years and was a lesson in pair driving for many. I will never forget taking photos on the marathon, standing near the railroad tracks to catch people in the Mesquite hazard. Hardy and his wife and groom, Juta, came down the land at a tremendous pace and I could actually feel the ground shake as they passed by me to turn and enter the hazard. In those days one of the most successful competitors in the west was Randy McFarland, a competitor and trainer from Southern California. At the time that many of us felt the best way to do a hazard was in the “crash and burn” style, Randy would skunk us with his smooth, rounded - and very fast runs through hazards. Here he is - believe it or not - bending to the right so far you almost cannot actually see him in this shot - one of my all-time favorites. V OLUME 12, I SSUE 4 A.D.C.S. Pre event returns totaled approximately $1355.00. The amount for sales at the event is not yet known as of this writing, and cannot be known exactly, as other sales items may have been combined in a check collected there. Unfortunately, from that amount must be deducted the cost of the iPad and costs for printing up raffle tickets and mailing them out. But, every penny helped with this year's event, which had fewer than normal entries. And, in case you have not already heard, the winner this year was our own Jim Erbacher. Any who have been involved at all in the ADT Series know Jim, who has been coming up with, setting up, and judging our cones courses for many years now. Last year's winner was the Duttons who contributed raffle prizes of carts and harnesses for many years. So that result seemed very justified. This year, Jim's win is also ironic. Jim won a CDE entry or ADT Series entries a few years ago when we pulled a second place ticket for that prize. Of course, since he does not drive any more, he could not use that prize. So it seemed only right that he won the iPad this year. One might say that he is very lucky, with two tickets drawn within the past three years. Jim, maybe you should enter the lottery! Thank you again to all who participated in the raffle. And better luck next time we do it. ADCS APRIL 2015 NEWSLETTER P AGE 6 Saturday, May 16, 2015 Dressage Tests: ADS #3 at each level. We have both the wooden shafts and the metal marathon shafts, and a detachable back step box. The nice thing about the carriage is the shafts are removable, which means you can load it into small spaces when traveling. The wood is a warm honey Pecan color. A great buy at only $1900. Call Kevin Fetherston: 480-650-1089. MESSAGE FROM PAT CONWAY I want to thank everyone who helped Beau, Chris and me at the AZ CDE after our accident. Our friendships within the CDE community are the reasons we have continued to compete throughout the years. We enjoy the sense of closeness and mutual support that we project to each other in our sport. We have become a family in the best sense of the word. Thank you all for the concern and generous gifts of time especially (in order of appearance): Barbara, Sally, Keith, Mike, Jim, Melissa, Dana, Marcia, Karen and Bill, Shelly and Ben, Merry, Donna and Carol, Sue, Marybeth and Bob, and all of you who stopped to give us your best wishes. Please excuse me if I left you out, my memory is somewhat fuzzy around the edges. Chris, I'm soooo sorry that I dumped you on your head!! Beau is doing very well, still a little sore in spots but recovering quickly. He's had massages and handwalking, and has the vet's OK to be turned out this coming week. Again, Thank you all. It's good to know you have our backs. V OLUME 1, I SSUE 1 P AGE 9 P AGE 10 ADCS APRIL 2015 NEWSLETTER THE 30TH ARIZONA CDE by Peter Atonna We have been celebrating the fact that the ADCS has offered an ADS registered CDE for thirty consecutive years and that is the second longest running event in the country. It was this fact that got me to looking back at my old slides and starting my monthly photo article from some of the early years of our event. Even though some of our earliest members are no longer with us, I feel all ADCS members should be proud of the fact that this organization has been a leader in supporting the sport of competitive carriage driving in this country. But getting back to this year’s event. For our officials, we brought Melissa Boyd from Michigan to be our head judge, her first trip to Arizona. Melissa was extremely thorough and I think everybody enjoyed working with her. Next we had two old friends: Merrie Morgan has been here - and regularly so - as a competitor. This year she came as our Side Judge. It was great to see her again. For his fourth trip in five years, Keith Yutzy came from Texas as our Technical Delegate. Keith is not only an extremely knowledgeable TD but a delight to work with. And for her second year, our own Bretta Crump was the Scorer. We recognize the local team that is critical to putting on an event. For those of you who did not make it to Coolidge and our banquet, where we do that recognition, here are people, without whom there simply would not be a CDE: Event Manager: Linda Viani Office Secretary: Sally Henry Course designer and manager: Peggy Jaeger Cones designer and manager: Jim Erbacher Volunteer coordinator: Loralee Wuertz Tent sales manager: Lin Hall Prizes and awards: Dana Moore Grounds preparation: Bob Goree, Greg Wuertz and Charlie Gwinn and finally, the entry secretary: Mary Jane Atonna and I act as Event Organizer. I cannot emphasize enough that our CDE’s would not exist without the efforts of these people. If you run into any of them, please give them a big “thank you”. Well, are you wondering if we actually held the event. You bet! Although our entries continued their decline, we did host 25 competitors in the Training, Preliminary and Intermediate divisions. I don’t know if the recent ADS change in definition of the Advanced division to be an Intermediate II division had an effect, but for the first time in several years, we had no entries in this highest level of competition. However, as ADS announced this year that the National Championship for the Preliminary division would be held at the Shady Oaks CDE in Lodi, CA this fall, we did see nice full Preliminary classes. Probably not a coincidence. So, how did this year’s CDE go? Actually, except for one wind related incident, it went very smoothly and the three large Preliminary classes had some good competition within them. In the Preliminary Horse class, Marcia Fetherston had an excellent dressage test while Drew Callahan had six less points in the marathon than a cluster of others. But in cones, Drew had two knockdowns while Dana Moore, who had the second best dressage and marathon scores, went clean to take away the blue ribbon! Drew had a second entry, this one in the Preliminary Pony class. He simply swept it, having the best score in dressage, marathon and went clean in cones. The story here was the second place person, Bill Gorham. This was the second year for our Over 70 prize, awarded to the competitor over the age of 70 V OLUME 1, I SSUE 1 P AGE 11 who had the best score in each division. This year we had four entries, all in the Preliminary Division: Bill Gorham, Donna Lutter, Mary Jane Atonna and Pat Conway. In last year’s Over 70 competition, Bill had a great dressage score and was leading in the marathon until he E’d in a hazard throwing the Training Over 70 prize to Marybeth Goree. Well, this year Bill did not let that happen and he swept the Preliminary group, winning his prize at last. In Preliminary Pairs, like Drew in Preliminary Pony, Gary Gang pretty much swept the field. He had the best dressage and marathon scores, and even with six cones knockdowns, he earned his blue ribbon handily. As a final note, three competitor’s dressage scores stood out from the rest; Bridget Phillips had the best of the event with a score of: 31.30, while Pat Conway had a 42.73 and Marcia Fetherston a 43.82. Debbi Packard was close behind with 44.36 and Drew Callahan with 48.73. You can see a detailed results table in this issue and on our website, http://www.azcarriage.org Bill Gorham winner of the Over 70 award Bridget Phillips winner of the Intermediate Horse class ADCS APRIL 2015 NEWSLETTER P AGE 12 Dana Moore winner of the Preliminary Horse class Drew Callahan winner of the Preliminary Pony class Drew Callahan in the Kokopelli Pipes hazard with his Preliminary Horse entry V OLUME 1, I SSUE 1 P AGE 13 Gary Gang winner of the Preliminary Pairs class in the Goree’s Puzzle hazard Jo Anne Souza winner of the Preliminary VSE class in the Wandering Poles hazard. ADT #2 Information you may want/need! Your contacts are Dana (dannabe@cox.net) or Julie (nitach@juno.com). Julie did the schedule. The schedule for dressage is now on the web site. Go to: http://www.azcarriage.org/2015ADT2.html On that page you will find links to both view the schedule, cones, hazards, grounds and to print up a copy for yourself (pdf files), if you want one. There will be no copies available at the ADT. Please also print up your pre-competition check sheet to fill out and turn in AT THE SAFETY CHECK. A few notes for all: Please read. (They are also on the web page.) 1. You need to sign additional waivers of liability before you hook up on Friday or Sunday, as the Club is not covered for liability on those days. Goree Farms also has a wavier you need to sign. Waivers will be located by the office trailer over by the dressage field. Each will cover multiple dates-you do not need one for each day. 2. No trash cans on site. Please bring your own bag and plan to pack out all your trash. Manure needs to be removed from any stall you use and piled ON THE GROUND in an area the tractor can reach. If not sure where, please ask someone who has been to this site before. Anyone who turns a horse out in the round pen over on the Goree side needs to also remove manure from that area. 3. The general membership meeting will begin approx. 30 minutes after the last person has finished the hazards on Saturday. Please plan to stay for the meeting. Many issues need your input. Pizza will be provided. PLEASE SIGN THE MEETING SHEET AT CHECK-IN that indicates who is staying and the number of people in the party. We need a count in order to have the pizza ordered ahead of time. 4. If staying for the Sunday activity, PLEASE SIGN THE SUNDAY SHEET at check in, so the organizers know how many to plan for on Sunday. 5. The grounds and the gophers: We did the best we could filling up gopher holes for the CDE last month. That was too long ago to believe that the holes are still filled. We will put a shovel in each hazard and several at the dressage field. As you walk hazards and walk the dressage field, please help out by filling in any holes you notice that would be in your intended path of travel. Use mounds of dirt the little angels have left nearby, or get dirt from around the edges of the dressage field and the field with the two hazards. The Puzzle hazard should have plenty of mounds nearby for getting dirt, and hopefully in the Tamaracks there will be few holes...they seem to leave that one alone for the most part! Thanks in advance for helping with this. We just do not have the man power or time to prepare the grounds again. 6. Stall Assignments: We will put stall cards on the stalls by the dressage field, so you will know which is yours. A chart will be posted on the bathroom building as well. I may also get it up on the web site later today or tomorrow. No promises there. 7. For Folks are staying overnight, Electric hook up: Should you need to plug into the electric, there will be an additional $10 charge- cash or check payable to Bob Goree. N EWSLETTER T ITLE P AGE 16 Fresno County Horse Park Continuous Drive By Leslie Kennard The Continuous Drive hosted by the Central Valley Harness Association on February 28 and March 1, 2015 was quite a hit with 29 entries. What a great event to start the driving season. With the help of Linda Fairbanks (Brass Oaks Driving Society), Lois Patten and Phyllis Rumley organized the two day event. For those of you who haven’t got the message yet, the old Ram Tap venue is now called Fresno County Horse Park and is better than ever. The cross country course is ideal for the marathon (GREAT water hazards), and there is plenty of space for cones and dressage, as well as, ample parking, camping, and nice barn stalls for the horses. This format is perfect for busy people who can’t commit to a full three day CDE and it is a lot less expensive, not to mention, a lot less stressful. Competitors can do one day or both with the caveat that one part of the day is spent driving and the other part of the day is spent volunteering. The drivers (and riders – we had two!) do a timed 2 K course with two hazards, then they report for a dressage test. After dressage they move back over to the cross country course for another timed 2 K course with two different hazards. The last thing is the cones course. There were many opportunities to win ribbons as placings were first through fifth in each class with Best Overall in each Division. There were VSE’s, Training, Preliminary, Intermediate - horses, ponies and pairs. Pam Miller from the Whip’r Snappers won the Best Overall for the two days with her Haflinger pony. V OLUME 1, I SSUE 1 P AGE 17 Diane Kastama was Reserve Champion. Rhonda McPherson was the dressage judge. She did a very thorough job and was quite helpful with her comments. Ann McClure and Diane Kastama judged cones. Trish Demers seemed to be everywhere helping people and being the safety check person; Linda Fairbanks kept us on track with the volunteer and driver schedule; and Phyllis Rumley kept us laughing. Overall, a nicer group of organizers couldn’t be asked for. Deb Hilberg from Paso Robles came to photograph everyone and what a job she did. Beautiful photos and lots of them. Call Deb at 805 610-5938 if you haven’t ordered your CD from the event. Oh, and did I mention the train? Coolidge, AZ isn’t the only driving event with a train. See the photo of Gary Gang and me with “the girls” racing the train. (All photos by Deb) Next is the Brass Oaks Continuous Drive in Twin Rivers May 23 and 24. More prizes and big discounts for those who have already done the CVHA event. Call Linda Fairbanks at 805 237-8476 for info. It’s not too late to get in on the fun. See you there! N EWSLETTER T ITLE P AGE 18 MEMBER SPOTLIGHT with JULIE and PETE STEELE What city do you live in and what is farm or ranch name? Buckeye. Steele Hobby Ranch. We have 3 full size horses, 3 Miniature Horses, 5 Myotonic Goats (Momma and 2 sets of babies boy-girl each time) and 13 chickens. Almost forgot 4 Italian Greyhounds, (two sets of brothers). What activities do you enjoy with your horses? How did you get started driving carriages? Pete and I love the Clinton Anderson method with the ground training. Love riding the full size horses and we drive one of the miniature horses for now. We are in the process of training one of the other minis to drive. My friends Tammy Schreiber and Jennifer Williamson already had Miniature horses and got me hooked. What do you like best about being a member of the ACDS? Don’t know how to answer that because I just joined. So far we have made some new friends in Patty & Bruce Huling and Sheri Kalfas. Name something that you always have in your refrigerator: Milk for coffee and Blue Moon Beer. Carrots, lettuce and fresh farm eggs. V OLUME 1, I SSUE 1 P AGE 19 The ADCS Board has decided that the Gorees should have permanent possession of the Ferd Etchart trophy in concert with our 30th Anniversary Event and in recognition of the fact that without their support, effort and generosity, we could have never reached this accomplishment.
