PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION
OF THE LORD
THE ATTITUDE OF CHRIST JESUS
The Lenten cycle brings us to this “mixed” Sunday of
palm branches and painful suffering. Our liturgy opens by
recalling Jesus’ triumphant entry along the main road into
Jerusalem, then moves quickly to the back streets of betrayal
and humiliation, the courtyards of torture and abandonment,
the hill of execution.
Isaiah’s strange and gripping “Song of the Servant of
God” was to become the song of Jesus. It is the song of one
who strides forward consistently in the face of criticism, even
scorn: “I have not rebelled, have not turned back.” It is to
become our song, as faithful followers of Jesus Christ.
How are we to react when we hear the account of
the passion and death of the Lord? Paul tells us that our attitude must be Christ’s, who “emptied himself, taking the form
of a slave.” We pray that we may absorb the attitude of
Christ, and face life squarely in its triumph and its pain.

DIVINE MERCY
SUNDAY
(Sunday April 27)
 All parishioners are invited to participate in the
special celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday, the
Sunday after Easter. Fr. Toner will conduct a
special service after the 10:30 a.m. Mass to
highlight the celebration.
 Our Lord promised St. Faustina complete forgiveness of sins and punishment to all those who
will go to Confession (during Lent or duringHoly Week) and receive Holy Communion on
this day.
 In addition, Pope John Paul II granted a plenary
indulgence for the devout observance of Divine
Mercy Sunday.
 So come, celebrate, and bathe in Our Lord’s
ocean of graces and unfathomable mercy.
Be sure to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation prior to Divine Mercy Sunday (during Lent
or during Holy Week). This is the day of extraordinary graces and “complete forgiveness of sins and
[of its due] punishment” for those who approach
Him in trust and faith.
The Novena to Divine Mercy begins
on Good Friday.
Divine Mercy Novenas are available at the Gift Shop.

Christians of the Holy Land
The Good Friday Collection Explained
Pictured (left) is the Jerusalem Cross. If you
have the opportunity to visit the Holy Land
you will see this cross displayed everywhere.
The meaning behind the Jerusalem Cross can
be explained in many ways. The most famous
are its representation of the Five Wounds of Jesus Christ.
Another is the large cross representing the Person of Jesus,
with the smaller four crosses representing the Four Gospels
spread to the Four Corners of the Earth started in the Upper
Room, in Jerusalem, more than 2000 years ago on Pentecost.
We are blessed with rich and marvelous tradition! The Good
Friday collection is taken up once a year and provides the
necessary basic cash flow, operating income if you will, to
sustain the Catholic institutions in the Holy Land. It is our
collective privilege and duty to preserve our tangible heritage
in our Christian Holy Land. Please give generously! Peace
Salam, Rami Qumsieh, KHS, a concerned Catholic Palestinian from Bethlehem.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
On Good Friday the Universal Church gathers to remember the crucifixion of Jesus Christ as we await His
resurrection on Easter Sunday. At the same time our thoughts turn to the Holy Lands where Christ lived,
died and rose again.
Further, we are drawn to our brothers and sisters in Christ who continue to live in these Holy Lands and
carry on the traditions of our Faith. Today's Christians in this region are in need of our support. The existence of programs that assist the faithful in these lands depend on the financial contributions received from the special collection on
Good Friday, April 18. More than ever, your help is needed to aid our brothers and sisters in Christ as they provide presence, care and service in the Holy Land.
Catholic Communities have been in the Holy Land since 1209, walking in Jesus' footsteps, caring for the poor, educating
young people, providing scholarships, protecting the Holy Shrines, conducting pastoral ministries and keeping Christianity alive. The Collection for the Holy Land will go not only to help the continued protection of the Holy sites, but also
to meeting the pastoral, charitable, educational and social needs which the Church supports in the Holy Land.
Thank you for your generosity in helping support this critical mission of keeping Christianity alive in the Holy Land.
Have a Blessed Holy Week!
Sincerely yours in Christ.

Reflecting on God’s Word
Today’s Gospel before the blessing of the palms presents an exuberant scene. Imagine the
large crowd just outside Jerusalem spreading their cloaks on the road, breaking off palm
fronds, strewing them about and waving them as Jesus passes by. Hear the people shouting,
“Hosanna to the Son of David.” As Jesus enters the city, the people there are asking, “Who is
this?” The crowd accompanying him answers: “This is Jesus the prophet, from Nazareth of
Galilee. This is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.” A journey of joy.
But a few days later Jesus took his last journey: a winding walk from the upper room on
Thursday night out to the garden of Gethsemane, then to the house of Caiaphas, on to Pilate’s
house and courtyard, and, finally, to the hill of Calvary. During this time, he was spat on and
struck, stripped, scourged, and crowned with thorns; he was denounced, mocked, and ridiculed. Most likely some of the same crowd that cried out “Hosanna” cried out, “Crucify him!”
It ended with his being nailed to a cross, and after three torturous hours, he died. At this journey’s end, there was one final cry from a small group, a centurion and the men with him:
“Truly, this was the Son of God!” (Matthew 27:54).
Allow some time to relive these two journeys. You might hear some things you haven’t noticed before. Perhaps the words of one of the secondary characters or Jesus’ response to a particular situation or his silence before another will speak to you this time.
