Starting with the men’s and women’s fencing team winning its 10th of 13th national crowns in March 2007, Penn State is tied for the national lead, with the University of Southern California, with 16 NCAA Championships, including football titles. The Nittany Lions have won at least one NCAA title in each of the past nine academic years, starting in 2006-07. Penn State’s 16 NCAA Championships are at least double the number of NCAA titles won by every Big Ten Conference institution over the past nine years. Since 1992-93, the Nittany Lions’ 27 NCAA Championships are more than double every Big Ten school that has competed in the conference for more than one year (Nebraska and Ohio State are second with 12). The Nittany Lions and USC each have had five teams combine to win their 16 national titles over the past nine years. Penn State has had crowns earned by women’s volleyball (six), men’s and women’s fencing (four), wrestling (four), men’s gymnastics (one) and men’s volleyball (one). Florida is third with 15 NCAA titles since March 2007, followed by Oregon and Stanford (14), UCLA (13) and Texas A&M (10). Since then, a dedicated group has spent great effort planning and fundraising to bring it back. Now it’s time to get to work. The committee is gathering materials, tools and volunteers to complete the project. In our last board meeting, approval was given to enable our chapter membership to volunteer as a group to help in the rebuilding of the playground. The ‘build week’ is scheduled for Sept 21 to Sept 27, with multiple shifts each day. -Our goal is to get our group together for the Tuesday evening shift, 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM. -Both ‘skilled’ and ‘unskilled’ workers are needed (skilled means you could run a power saw). -If you’re unable to participate in our work day, the committee is also looking to borrow tools for the week (sliding mitre saws, cordless drills, impact drivers, etc); they will be returned in the same or better condition! -Our Chapter Secretary, Josh Deering, will coordinate our volunteers; please contact him to register or for additional information at psu1rules@yahoo.com. Please sign up by Saturday, Sept 12. Check out the Facebook page, Kids Joy Land-Out of the Ashes! We look forward to seeing you there! FIGHTING STUDENT HUNGER AT PENN STATE The chapter is once again going to support the Student Food Pantry at UP. We will start accepting donations at the August board meeting, and will accept donations at each board meeting through the spring semester. Lion's Pantry is a student run organization created to address the issue of student hunger at Penn State. Their purpose is to help provide sustenance to Penn State's low-income students by providing goods donated from the community and corporate partners. The need for a university food pantry has been realized through stories from students, community members, and nation-wide statistics showing the growth of food insecurity for college-aged adults. *Please check out the websites, http://www.sustainability.psu.edu/reinvention/lions-pantry to learn more or make a donation! RECENT EVENTS FRESHMEN SENDOFF Sendoff Event Welcomes Future Penn State Alumni! On Sunday, August 2, the Chapter hosted an event for incoming Penn State students (Class of 2019!) and their families at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster. More than 70 people, including 25 Freshmen, their parents, and Chapter members and volunteers, enjoyed a wonderful afternoon as current students and York Campus Lion Ambassadors were on-hand to answer questions, get students excited about their upcoming years at Penn State, share what to expect as freshmen, and describe the importance of getting involved in campus activities. Following a catered picnic lunch, students enjoyed a fun social activity and dozens of door prizes were awarded, including a $50 gift certificate to the Penn State Bookstore. Attendees were able to get their pictures taken with the Nittany Lion, enjoy delicious Berkey Creamery Ice Cream, purchase tickets for our Scholarship Raffle, and learn about the many ways our Chapter serves our membership and the local community. Many thanks to the committee of dedicated volunteers who assisted by decorating the auditorium, greeting students and their families, manning information tables, selling raffle tickets, serving ice cream, and making the day a huge success. Special thanks to DuJour Catering for providing the fabulous lunch for this popular, annual event. GOOD LUCK, FRESHMEN!!
