You are Unique
There is nobody like YOU.
Nobody else has the same
ability or personality,
interest or feelings as
YOU do– nobody else
ever will . Your creator
has given YOU special
gifts, but it’s up to YOU
to use them well . The only
one who can make the
most of your potential is
YOU.
A Note From Mrs Van Dyk’s Desk
Parents, as your daughter nears the end of this year I ask you to
share the words of this poem with her. Help her to realise that she
is special and that she has the potential to be great! Encourage her
to work hard to the end and to constantly strive for improvement.
The last few weeks have been very busy with many sporting and
cultural activities taking place each day. I thank all our girls who
have participated and all our coaches & trainers for their
enthusiasm and for the time they have spent with the girls.

Our extra mural activities will continue until the end of the term
and I encourage our girls to participate even during exams.
I wish all our Gr 4-7 girls all the best as they prepare for their
exams. I pray that God will help them to think clearly & to
remember what they have studied.

Angel Mass 2 October 2015
Our customary Angel Mass was celebrated in the Jubilee Centre on Friday 2 October. It was the last
Mass that the current matrics celebrated with the whole school. As in past years the Grade 1s
accompanied the matrics into Mass. This practice serves to remind the matrics how far their journey
has gone. Some of the matrics began their schooling in the Pre-Grade, while others joined in Grade 1 or
Grade 8. Before the entry procession the Grade 7’s gave each of the matrics a gift of a bead angel that
Mrs Bradbury organised. Each bead angel was hand made by the Grade 7’s. The matrics were delighted
with the angels.
Fr Michael Murphy was the celebrant. In his homily he focussed on the role angels play in our lives,
especially guardian angels. The Prayers of the Faithful were offered by some matric girls and their
Grade 1 companion. They prayed for guardian angels for each one present at Mass. They also asked
that we humans be like angels in caring for the world in which we live. After Mass Fr Michael blessed
each one of the matrics and her Grade 1 companion.

Grade 7 Social
Friday night the 9th of October was definitely
a highlight for all our Grade 7 girls from St. Dominic’s and boys from CBC.
The girls and boys were dressed up and looking mighty ‘SWAG 'for the occasion.
The music was pumping, the dance floor was buzzing and the excitement in the air was contagious. We, as
teachers ,became the students that evening and were given a lesson in the famous ‘Nae Nae”.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks
to Mr. Stephen Bryan, his wonderful team of Gr 7 teachers and the boys for
being such warm and welcome hosts.
An incredible evening where special memories and friendships were made.

Grade 1 Orientation
On Friday 30 October , 85 excited little Grade 0’s gathered in the Jubilee Centre to meet their new
teacher for “big school” in 2016.
First the children were entertained by our Gr 7 Function Committee while their parents organised books,
stationery bags and uniforms.
Then, amid much trepidation the girls listened for their names to be called and they were escorted by the
Gr 6’s to their new classrooms.
A psychologist presented advice of how parents can handle this big transition .
Before saying good bye to their new teachers, friends , sights and smells, refreshments were had by all.

Malcolm Gooding Speech Competition
On Thursday 29 October , Tayla Barrett (Gr 5) , Emma Wilson (Gr 6 ) and Chloe’
Farinha (Gr 7 ) took part in the Malcolm Gooding Speech competition at Bishop
Bavin in Bedfordview. Only one girl is chosen from each grade to participate, so
you really have to be on top form . This competition is different to the others
that we take part in , as they choose 1st , 2nd and 3rd place in each grade. It
has been our dreamfor many years to win the Grade 7 section. WELL, thanks to
Chloe’s superb speech we won!! We are so proud of you all , especially Chloe’ ,
your speech was outstanding and as the judges said “ You are a natural born
speaker”. Tayla and Emma also received wonderful reports from their respective judges. Bravo girls, what an evening of public speaking. I would like to thank
the parents and teachers for their support and surviving the traffic getting to
the school.

"The African Junior Championships 2015 in Cairo, Egypt, attracted 18 countries from the African Continent and presented us
with the future stars in World Swimming. FINA also classified this event as an official Olympic Qualifying event. This was
Carissa van Rooyen's first exposure to International Swimming, representing South Africa at one of the largest events on the
continent for Elite Junior Swimmers.
Carissa participated in the Group 1 girls events which
comprised of girls born in 2001 and 2002. Carissa was
selected for the events listed below. She was the only 13
year old in the finals of most of her main events, an
outstanding achievement in itself.
The St. Dominic’s Ducks thought about Carissa everyday
and asked for updates, their support and enthusiasm for
Carissa has been a joy to watch. She is truly inspirational.
Carissa went on to make South Africa and St.
Dominic’s proud with the following results:

100m back - Gold

50m back - Gold

50m freestyle - Bronze (Gold was taken by
the only other 13 year old South African in
this final, Rebecca Meder)

4 X 100m Freestyle Relay - Gold and
African record
(Carissa van Rooyen (13), Hannim Abrahams (13),
Dune Coetzee (13) and Rebecca Meder (13). The
other relay teams comprised 14 year olds

4 X 100m Medley Relay - - Gold and
African record
Carissa van Rooyen (13), Hannim Abrahams (13),
Dune Coetzee (13) and Rebecca Meder (13). The
other relay teams comprised 14 year olds.
Carissa medalled in all the events she participated
in and her results and the times swum also won her
the medal honour award for the 3rd place best overall swimmer for girls in Group 1. The first 2 places
were taken up by Carissa's SA team mates Rebecca Meder
and Hannim Abrahams.
Her highlights were the award ceremonies, which were
“amazing”, standing on the podium receiving her medals
and beautiful Sphinx trophies and then having the South
African National Anthem
played just for her—
wow—what an honour.
The competition was
tough and often saw split seconds between the top places.

Grade 7 Mass
The Grade 7 girls enjoyed a very special Mass with other Catholic Schools in
the area. Our annual Grade 7 Mass is held at St. Patrick’s Church in Benoni
and hosted by St. Columba’s. Other schools celebrating Mass with us included
Veritas, CBC, Emaromeni, Marist Brothers and St. Catherine’s. After a very
special service, the girls enjoyed socialising with all the Grade 7’s. We thank
Mrs. Marcon and her staff for their hospitality and all the participating
schools for making this celebration a meaningful and spiritual one. A highlight
of the Grade 7 year.
Mrs Bradbury
Grade 7 Final Assembly
Our final assembly is always one filled with emotion. This year all the Grade
7’s were able to pay tribute to their parents, friends, teachers and the
Junior School. Grade 5M gave the message, Proudly St. Dominic’s which was
fitting of the tribute to follow. The girls “flash-mobbed” the assembly, with
Mrs. Van Dyk’s prior consent of course! Scattered around the Jubilee Centre,
they stood in song, paying tribute to their parents with “Flashlight” by Jessie
J. The girls came together and then turned to the Junior School singing “See
you Again” by Charlie Puth. This emotional rendition, dedicated to those
leaving the school, all the Junior School Girls from Grade 1-6, as well as Miss
Dos Santos; had the girls in tears. We are going to miss this group of Grade
7 girls and wish them well as they move into the next phase of their School
Career. We also wish Miss Dos Santos well on journey to the USA and will
Miss Dos Santos
sorely miss her.
