NE ZAHTEVA VELIKO, POMENI OGROMNO. YOUR STEP MATTERS. IT DOESN’T TAKE MUCH, BUT MAKES A GREAT DIFFERENCE. Ostre podnebne razmere, mlada in plitva prst ter krušljiva apnenčasta skala vsako poletje pogojujejo rast alpske flore. Vegetacija ob planinskih in drugih poteh je prilagojena negostoljubnim razmeram gorskega sveta. Hoja zunaj poti ni priporočljiva - naravovarstveni, upravljavski in estetski vidik obiskovanja občutljivega gorskega območja zahteva pozornega obiskovalca, ki spoštuje krhkost življenja v gorah. Določena so tri varstvena območja. The code of conduct for protected area visitors is well accepted as it will help the national park achieve its primary objective – to preserve the exceptional nature of this priceless mountain area for the generations to come. In several selected areas in Triglav National Park will be designated as pilot conservation zones as stipulated in the TNP Act. Though varied, the reasons for designation share a common goal: to help raise the awareness of all target groups about the outstanding value of certain park areas. Three conservation zones have been identified: in terms of visitation the third conservation zone covers the transitional, or starting, zone of the park, whereas the second and the first zone form the park’s core area, which requires ‘environmentally aware’ visitors to ensure long-term sustainable development. The rules and recommendations considering the code of conduct in national parks are of key importance in protected areas worldwide: to protect and conserve exceptional, pristine and unique nature’s phenomena and preserve them for the future generations. A large majority of Triglav National Park visitors abide by these rules. With this in mind, we feel confident that the designation of conservation zones will be warmly welcomed and will help reduce potential impact on the environment. Pursuit of any activity in Triglav National Park (e.g. walking, climbing, cycling, water or air sport) is at your own risk. Your safety is conditional on your sound judgement, overall physical condition, concentration, as well as observation of your current capabilities, skills and circumstances. • VREME v gorah je spremenljivo. S seboj vzemite rezervna topla oblačila, oblačite se v slojih. WEATHER in the mountains is very changeable. Bring a change of clothes, and dress in layers. HEALTH – when venturing on a tour, make sure it is suitable to your physical and mental fitness. Also, carry an adequate supply of liquid. Na zavarovanih plezalnih poteh uporabljajte samovarovalne komplete, plezalne pasove in čelade, ter primerno obutev. PATHS – gravel increases the possibility of slipping, in particular in exposed places and in wet conditions. Demanding secured routes require the use of self-belaying kits, harnesses and helmets, as well as suitable climbing footwear. OPREMA – uporabljajte le opremo namenjeno za hojo v gore. Obujte primerne planinske čevlje s primernim podplatom, ki segajo čez gleženj. EQUIPMENT – only use mountaineering equipment. Wear good quality high mountaineering boots with sturdy soles. INFORMATION – before setting off, obtain the relevant information on the conditions of paths and trails, available mountain huts and bivouacs, and the weather. V primeru nesreče kličite . In case of an accident call . + Harsh climate, young and shallow soil, and crumbly limestone rocks foster the growth of Alpine flora. The sturdy vegetation along mountain and other trails is adapted to the demanding conditions of this highaltitude terrain. Attentive visitors who appreciate and respect the sensitive and fragile mountain environment observe the nature conservation, management, and aesthetic guidelines of mountain visitation and refrain from walking outside designated paths. A CLIMB IN THE COMPANY OF A MOUNTAIN GUIDE is a safe and memorable experience. Ob nočeh brez Lune bo zanimivo opazovati meglice in zvezdne kopice naše Galaksije in oddaljene druge galaksije. Light is absorbed and scattered by Earth’s atmosphere, so the universe is best seen from – space. Space-travel aside, the goal is to minimize the amount of air between us and the stars, and observe them from a dark site through dry and turbulence-free air. The Alps are the only place in Central Europe that reaches high enough, but it has two problems: turbulent air-masses often make stars twinkle and dance around, while the large Padua plain with its extensive light pollution makes observations towards the most interesting southerly directions difficult. Fortunately, Slovenia adopted state legislation on light pollution a decade ago, so most luminaires with light emitted along the horizontal plane or even upwards have already been replaced. Observations from some Julian Alps peaks are still influenced by the light glow from Italy. However, wide horizons can also be enjoyed from Vogel, which boasts a convenient cable car access, often even at night-time. Turbulence tends to calm down during the night, and town glow on Vogel is blocked by mountains of the southern Bohinj ridge and frequently also by fog covering lowlands. The conditions are therefore similar to those experienced ages ago by shephers at Orlove glave pastures. tnp is organizing scheduled public sky observing events at its centre Bohinjka in Stara Fužina and at Vogel. A public outreach lecture is in case of clear weather followed by hands-on observations with astronomical telescopes. The main spring attraction this year is going to be the planet Jupiter with is Galilean moons. In summer it is to be replaced by the red Mars and by Saturn with its inclined ring system. Autumn will sport Venus seen as an Evening star. These will be joined every second week of the month by Moon in the first quarter when its craters and mountains are easy to spot on the border between its illuminated and dark sides. Moonless nights are excellent to admire nebulae and star clusters in our Galaxy and to search for other galaxies further away. Night scenery can be interesting by itself. From Vogel one can easily spot the tiny lights of night climbers on the peak of Triglav who enjoy it under the stars. Povzeto po knjigi Hermana Mikuža Naše nebo The coming months will offer a multitude of exciting events to astronomy enthusiasts. They will have an opportunity to observe Mars, Saturn with its spectacular ring system, and gas giant Jupiter and its moons. Mars will be at its closest approach to the Earth in May. Other interesting events will be the planets’ approach to the Moon. On May, for example, Mars will be at ° north of the Moon. At that time a bright celestial body will appear next to the Moon. Mars will be slightly dimmed, but its reddish glow will still be recognizable in the dark night. The gas giant Jupiter with its mystic light is an impressive celestial body that cannot be missed. Saturn’s luminosity is more modest and does not exceed the average luminosity of stars; therefore, pinpointing its position will require more effort and precision. The best time for observations of the Moon is in its first quarter or last quarter stage, when it displays a strongly contrasting surface. Adapted from Herman Mikuž: Naše nebo (Our Sky in ). DOŽIVITE GORO Z GORSKIM VODNIKOM EXPERIENCING THE MOUNTAIN WITH A GUIDE (IFMGA) T riglavski narodni park (tnp) je edini narodni park v Sloveniji. Triglav National Park (tnp) is Slovenia’s only national park. The park derives its name from Triglav, which is not only the highest peak in the protected area but also the highest mountain in Slovenia ( m). The origin of the mountain’s name is rather uncertain. Triglav (Slovene for ”three-headed”) owes its name to its characteristic shape as seen from the south east, or to the highest pagan deity who was supposed to have its throne on the top of the mountain. Triglav features strongly in the heart of the Slovenian nation as a mythological and historical symbol and an element of national identity. It is also featured on the national coat-of-arms and the flag. According to a popular saying, you only become a true Slovene after getting on top of this mountain. However, statistics tell a slightly different story. Demanding terrain and unpredictable weather conditions keep the percentage of Slovenes atop Triglav at about % of the population. On the other hand, a climb in the company of a mountain guide is a safe and memorable experience. You can book your ifmga-certified mountain guide at any Triglav National Park information point or at www.zgvs.si. Hikers who do not opt for a tailor-made trek can join a guided tour of Triglav from one of these three Alpine valleys: Bohinj – -day – Across the pastures of Bohinj – generally considered as the most comfortable and extremely picturesque approach to Triglav. On the first day, hikers walk across the mountain pastures, through lush forests and the Valley of the Triglav Lakes. The actual ascent of the summit is scheduled for the early morning of the second day. Descend down the southern face of the mighty giant towards Bohinj. Stops along the way for a tasting and pur- chase of dairy products. Guided tours available: every Monday from June to September at a.m. Trenta – -day – Retracing the steps of the Trenta mountain guides – extremely popular for its historical highlights and beautiful landscape. The ascent of Slovenia’s highest peak is made particularly memorable by spectacular views of the precipitous western Julians and remote Trenta valley. Guided tours available: every Tuesday from June to September at a.m. Krma – -day – Through precipitous northern valleys – the ‘classical’ Triglav approach – although not the shortest – requires a certain level of fitness and stamina. TOLMINC is a full-fat hard cheese which can be produced either from raw or thermally processed cow’s milk. The production of fodder, milk production and all technological processes must be conducted within the area of Zgornje Posočje (Upper Soča Valley). BOVŠKI SIR has a characteristic aromatic, full, intense and slightly pungent odour and spicy flavour. It is mostly made from sheep’s milk that comes from the indigenous breed of sheep – the Bovec sheep. The addition of cow’s or goat’s milk results in a milder flavour and odour. MOHANT is a soft type of cheese of a whitish-yellow colour, distinctive smell and piquant taste. In Bohinj, Mohant was produced even before the development of classical cheese-making technologies, exclusively from milk that came from the indigenous ‘cika’ cows. Today, milk of other cow breeds is also used. • 11 DISCOVER T R I GLAV NATI ONAL PAR K VODO PIJEM IZ PIPE! I DRINK TAP WATER. ALI VEŠ? Javni zavod Triglavski narodni park si pridržuje pravico do spremembe programov, navedenih v vodniku. The Triglav National Park Authority reserves the right to change the programmes stated in the guide. V Triglavskem narodnem parku živim. In delam. S tem ogroža vire pitne vode in onesnažuje površinske vode. Voda je vir življenja. Brez nje nismo le lačni, žejni in umazani; voda omogoča razvoj in življenje vseh živih bitij. Ne samo tiste male ribe, tudi našega! Uporabljamo jo v industriji, prometu, kmetijstvu in drugih gospodarskih dejavnostih. I live in Triglav National Park. I work here. And here I spend my free time. Over the years, I have come to appreciate this privilege more and more. A decade (and more) ago, I preferred city walks, but now I find my peace in nearby woods, fascinated each time by the soothing effect the sound of the river has on my soul. Yet we take water for granted. Just like the flowery meadows, the silence in the forest and the life forms inhabiting it. When the mystic effect of nature wears down a little during my walk, I am pulled back into the real world, no longer oblivious to the tyres under the spruce tree, cans littering the meadows, and plastic bags on the river banks. Today waste disposal sites can be found at almost every step; however, some people still prefer to take waste to the forest or just discard it into the Sava river. This threatens the sources of drinking water and pollutes surface water. Water is the source of life. Without it, we would not only be hungry, thirsty and dirty; what’s more, water enables the development and life of all living creatures. Not just the life of that little fish, also our life! Water is used in industry, transport, agriculture, and other fields of the economy. And if we continue to disrespect it, one day this precious liquid will no longer come from the tap as clean as it does today. And so the relaxing walk through Triglav National Park can turn into worry (I admit I’m prone to worry because of the nature of my work) that we are not suffi- cently aware of the importance of nature conservation. I do not mind the waste, what I am bothered by is the disrespectful attitude of humans whose screaming is shattering the sound of birdsong, and the trampled or picked flowers that will never look as beautiful in a vase, and a forest trail demolished by motorbikes, and the growing pressure to build up the park, etc. Let us preserve the area in its present-day gleam for all who appreciate it, and let us have the possibility to admire what it offers. My grandchildren, great-grandchildren and all the future generations should have the same opportunity as I and my children to build dams in the same brook behind the house, enjoy the same views from Sleme above the Tamar valley, look in awe at the Peričnik waterfall, and watch animals grazing on a real meadow, not just in a children’s book. Can you imagine the Martuljek falls to disappear, and the Mala Pišnica river to run dry, no longer enlivened by the mountain brook that flows through it today? The attitude and desire starts with an individual, and the care for clean environment is much more than just the responsibility of municipal companies. Nature gives us so much, and demands so little: to be preserved as it is, to be protected and respected. I wish that our carefree walks along the paths of Triglav National Park would last ... ). In the form of seas, water created our mountains, shaped them through glacial and fluvial action, and continues to modify Earth’s surface as we speak. Biodiversity, landscape appearance and human settlements all depend on a certain area’s abundance of water supplies. In , tnp organises a series of awareness-raising campaigns that study and present water in all aspects and forms (see Events, p. ) . ALI STE VEDELI? DID YOU KNOW? 1. Triglavski narodni park spada med najbolj namočena območja Slovenije in Evrope. Povprečna letna količina padavin je najvišja v zahodnem delu parka in znaša okoli mm/m2. Triglav National Park ranks among the most watered areas in Slovenia and Europe. The average precipitation level is highest in the western part of the park and amounts to about mm/m2. 2. The park is home to over large and small springs. They are habitats of organisms that thrive in clean waters. Many springs are also a source of drinking water. 3. Alpska jezera so biseri Triglavskega narodnega parka. To so večinoma majhne vodne površine, zato so zelo občutljive za spremembe v okolju. Kopanje v njih ni dovoljeno. Alpine lakes are the pearls of Triglav National Park. Mostly small water areas, lakes are highly sensistive to any changes in the environment. No bathing is allowed in these lakes. 4. V Triglavskem narodnem parku začenjata svojo pot dve pomembni evropski reki: Soča in Sava. Soča se izliva v Jadransko morje, Sava v Črno. Razvodnica med porečjema poteka skozi osrčje Triglavskega narodnega parka. Two important European rivers, the Sava and the Soča, take their source in Triglav National Park. The Soča flows into the Adriatic Sea, and the Sava drains into the Black Sea. The dividing line between the two watersheds runs through the heart of Triglav National Park. 5. Visoka barja so poseben vodni ekosistem. V Sloveniji so zelo redka, zato jih še posebej varujemo. Raised bogs are a special water ecosystem. They are extremely rare in Slovenia and deserve a special protection status. Raised bogs can support plants adapted to harsh living conditions. For more information about raised bogs, visit a theme trail on the Pokljuka plateau.
