JOHNSON , LUELLA BAIN (DUDE), of Madisonville, claimed her reservation and peacefully moved to her heavenly home on Saturday, October 3, 2015. Born in 1923, she had celebrated her 28th birthday! She would have turned 28 again on December 1. Dude was 1 of 5 surviving children born to William Campbell Copeland Bain and Florence Coleman Bain in Polk County, TN. Having been given proper names at birth, all the sisters renamed themselves to Bert, Babe, Dude and Jack while their brother chose to be called Dick, not his given name either. After high school, Dude graduated from Hiwassee College and Tennessee Technical College. She became a teacher and secretary in the Monroe County school system and at one time, the secretary to the Hiwassee College President. She was proud to let everyone know that in her early years she earned her private pilot’s license and was licensed to teach aeronautics. However, her young husband put a halt to her flying as he felt that sport was too dangerous for his wife. Her three boys have only fond memories of their mother who unconditionally loved them despite their shenanigans. She was a dedicated church worker who saw that the boys got up every Sunday in time to go ring the church bell at the First United Methodist Church of Madisonville. She had them in the church pew every service dressed in their Sunday best. She was a loving wife who waited on her husband, Cecil, hand and foot. She was the epitome of a Proverbs 31 woman. Dude was preceded in death by parents mentioned above; husband, Cecil Johnson; young toddler son, Terry Johnson; sisters, Jacqueline Franklin (Jack), Elveeta Croft (Babe), and brother, Doyle Bain (Dick), mother-in-law, Amanda Grant Johnson, brother-in-law, Billy Johnson & sister-in-laws, Viola Jones and Louise Pickard. Survivors include immediate family: sons; Guy and Charlene Johnson, of Tellico Plains, Ray and Tammy Johnson, of Sevierville, and Lee Johnson, of Madisonville, as well as several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Hundreds of persons had to be rescued after 18 inches of rain fell in just 24 hours, prompting Governor Nikki Haley to say the state had not had such a level of rain in a thousand years. Following the shooting deaths of ten persons at a community college in Oregon, Hillary Clinton outlined new gun control proposals in two town hall meetings in New Hampshire on Monday, targeting “loopholes” in federal laws applying to individuals buying guns. The proposals included requiring persons engaged in high volume sales at gun shows and on the internet to be held to the same standards as sellers at gun stores, banning domestic abusers from access to guns, blocking guns sales without background checks, and holding gun manufacturers and dealers responsible for criminal and unlawful use of their products. On Sunday, Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump said stricter firearm regulations would not help stem the actions of mass violence because shooters were usually “intelligent” and would “still be able to break the system.” Trump said determined killers would get into a school or other buildings and there would be problems no matter what kind of laws or checks the country had. Trump additionally said the media should take some responsibility for helping to perpetuate “copycat killings.” He said in Franklin, Tennessee, on Sunday he had a carry license and if someone attacked him, they would be “shocked.” In Florida, an unidentified teen male who was surfing at New Smyrna Beach suffered a shark bite to his hand as he waded to shore in five feet of water, punching the shark in its nose and fleeing. On September 26, ten-year-old Ella Hawk bagged a 13-foot alligator in Texas with her crossbow, nailing the 800pound creature between its eyes, paralyzing and killing it. In SEC football on Saturday, No. 13 Alabama routed No. 8 Georgia 3810, No. 3 Ole Miss lost to No. 25 Florida 38-10, No. 9 LSU rolled by Eastern Michigan 44-22, No. 14 Phelps (Continued from pg 1) patched to Morris Street where a civil property retrieval was taking place and once at a residence where the retrieval was underway a female told him a woman in the house had active warrants against her. When Nipper asked the woman to provide him with identification he said she had none but said her name was “Sarah Wells.” She then changed it to “Samantha ‘Sammy’ Phelps.” Nipper asked if she was Sarah Phelps and Phelps said no. Telling her he could investigate and discover her true identity, Nipper said she confessed she was indeed Sarah Phelps. Bears Spirit Shirts! In November 2014, the co-op refinanced its debt of $12,734,119.08, saving over a million dollars in interest costs. FLEC’s dispatch center was updated this past year and technical innovations made it possible to better monitor outages and to more efficiently dispatch crews to the outages. Additional storage of information for the electrical system was installed and added security was added to address the growing risks of cyber threats. The Advanced Metering Infrastructure, or AMI, was reported as being fully deployed through FLEC’s residential service area. New meters and metering software will allow employees to check on energy flow within minutes of actual time. “Often,” said one member, “FLEC will know a home is without power as soon as the homeowner does.” The new meters are saving time and money, another board member said. One way of saving is the ability of the cooperative to turn the meters off and on remotely and power theft and tampering is noted within minutes. For 2015 and beyond, LED security lighting is available to members. LED offers a whiter light, a 60 to 90 percent reduction in energy use, a more rugged design, a longer life, and is more “environmentally friendly.” Recently passed was a 1.5 percent rate increase from TVA that has resulted in around $1.50 more per each month’s electric bill. FLEC did not add any increases from its facility but only the TVA increase. Summarizing, FLEC gets its money from residential sales of electricity (72 percent), commercial sales (six percent), industrial sales (16 percent), street and outdoor lighting (two percent), and other sources (four percent). Where does the money go? Power purchased from TVA (76 percent), operating expense (16 percent), property tax (one percent), net non-operating expense (one percent), and depreciation (six percent). Revenue for 2015: $67,922,449. Expense for the same period: $66,569,220. FLEC maintains 3,261 miles on lines and maintains 6,421 security lights. Employees trimmed over 10,000 trees in 2014 and cut down over 10,000. The utility cleared 491 miles of line during the same period. TVA has funded $19,678,453.86 for FLEC members’ heat pumps to date. The Fort Loudoun Cooperative has a power reliability rating of 99.996 percent. A defense official with the U.S. military in Turkey said on Monday a Russian claim that one of its fighter jets “accidentally” entered Turkish air space “by mistake” was false and the entry was intentional. Turkey said the jet prompted a scramble of F16 fighter jets to intercept the craft, which then crossed back into Syrian airspace. Activists in Syria said on Sunday the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria had destroyed a 2,000-year-old arch in the ancient city of Palmyra, the latest ancient site in the group’s campaign to wipe out historic monuments and structures in the territory it controls in Iraq and Syria. The “Arch of Triumph” was one of the most recognizable sites in the city seized by ISIS in May. The United States and 11 Pacific Rim nations agreed on the Trans-Pacific Partnership on Monday, a deal pushed by President Obama but without a unanimous assent by Congress, which continued to remain divided on the deal. After six years of negotiations, the agreement would eliminate tariffs considered barriers to trade, including over 18,000 imposed on U.S. exports.
