mauve #bleedpurple. Qu’est-ce que ça signifie?
The truth is, it can’t be defined by one word or phrase. You have to experience our
campus to truly understand why so many people – students, alumni, faculty and staff
– say they bleed purple. It’s the feeling of community and pride students get when
they set foot on our campus. It’s the welcoming smile on the faces of the people you
meet It’s the purpose with which our professors teach and build relationships with
our students. It’s the embrace of a small and tight-knit community you’ll never forget. It’s the idyllic charm of our campus architecture and surroundings. It’s all this
and so much more.
Being Purple instills a pride in each one of us no matter what we do, no matter where
we are, and no matter how long ago we graduated. It’s also why our alumni are so
fiercely attached to our school and why so many of our students are actively engaged
in every aspect of campus life – academics, experiential learning, student government, the arts, entrepreneurship, community involvement, athletics and more. Purple
simply flows through our veins.
#BleedPurple is not just a hashtag, it’s a
lifestyle. An experience that sets us apart
from every other university community.
Bishop’s is a one-of-a-kind institution in Canada. Our mission is to provide the best
undergraduate education to our students. We focus on the prestigious and proven
liberal education model. Our students receive an exceptional personalized academic
experience thanks to our small class sizes, leading-edge facilities, student support
systems and our largely full-time faculty. We encourage our students to pursue
interdisciplinary studies in diverse areas so that they gain a broad foundation of
knowledge about the wider world.
We empower our students to deal with complexity, diversity, and change. If you’re
looking for an educational experience that is unique, exceptional, personal and
transformational, continue reading and discover the power of Purple.

THRIVE AT BISHOP’S?—
“We bleed purple.
Purple blood flows
through our veins.”
Bishop’s has one of the most diverse campuses in the country, so
there is no “typical” Bishop’s student. But all Bishop’s students would
say that at least one of the following statements applies to them:
You want to be remembered by your name. You flourish in small,
intimate environments. You don’t feel the need to conform. You
are curious and inquisitive. You love to learn and are eager to
expand your intellectual horizons. You love to meet new peo-

ple, visit new places and gain new perspectives. You are aware
of self, community and the greater good. You’re eager to start
something – a club, a campaign, an entrepreneurial venture, a
journey, etc. You want to feel like you belong.
We expect our students to be engaged in the academic and social life
of our university, respectful of others and of self, open-minded and socially aware. If any of this resonates with you, then you #BleedPurple.
sentiment d’appartenance.
Our Promise
Bishop’s University will provide you with an extraordinary
educational experience that will prepare you for whatever
the future has in store. You can expect:
Transformative learning experiences;
The freedom to explore different
and varied avenues of study;
Small classes with close interaction
between you and your professors;
A safe and welcoming campus;
A close-knit community with a
sense of belonging and pride; and
Opportunities for unique experiences outside
the classroom and around the globe.
qui vous transformeront;
- la liberté d’explorer des secteurs
d’études différents et variés;
- de petites classes qui favorisent des échanges
profonds entre les étudiants et les professeurs;
- un campus sécuritaire et accueillant;
- une communauté très soudée qui stimule
un sentiment d’appartenance et de fierté;
sang mauve #bleedpurple.

Bishop’s is an English university in a French-speaking city. But what if your French
is rusty or you don’t speak French at all?
No worries. Roughly 50% of our students arrive on campus not knowing how
to speak la langue de Molière. Bishop’s is an English speaking university, and
all services on campus are offered in English so you don’t have to worry about
your interactions with faculty and staff. However, you can choose to practice your
French on campus if you want to, since most faculty and staff are bilingual. Plus,
you’ll meet students from across Canada and around the world with whom you can
practice your French.
An English university in a French city. The advantage is all yours!
Be open to new opportunities. BU.

A liberal education model focuses on providing you with relevant
knowledge and skills that employers are expecting in new graduates.
At Bishop’s, you will be exposed to a range of disciplines that will foster
curiosity and enhance your love of learning. This will lead you to a
broad understanding of our world, and to new interests, new passions,
and new discoveries. Our curriculum emphasizes core competencies
in leadership, social responsibility, critical thinking, problem solving,
effective communication, intercultural awareness, and collaboration all skills that employers search for no matter which field or career
you’re interested in. You will be challenged to look at different perspectives and make new connections; both hallmark qualities of innovators,
leaders and forward thinkers.
Bishop’s produces engaged global citizens – young men and women who
have the compassion, curiosity and confidence to confront the challenges facing our world coupled with the vitality to find solutions.
A liberal education is about preparing you for the job you’re aiming to
have when you graduate, but also for the job you’ll be thriving in, 10, even
20 years from now. With so much of our world interconnected, change is
now happening at a much quicker pace than it ever did before. Those who
are able to adapt to this change will become tomorrow’s leaders.
Be a change maker. Be Purple. BU.

LIBÉRALE SURTOUT CONCENTRÉ AU PREMIER CYCLE. QU’EST-CE QUE ÇA SIGNIFIE? —

The power to
change the world
“Employers have expressed a preference for students who have received a broadly based education that has taught them to write well,
think critically, research creatively and communicate easily.”
“Critics of the Liberal Arts Are Wrong’’,
Annette Gordon-Reed, Time Magazine, June 19, 2013
“A liberal arts education emphasizes forming independent judgments, articulating cogent arguments and developing the tools and
taste for continued, lifelong learning. We live in a world where our
graduates will be employed in roles that don’t even exist today. This
kind of learning is more practical than training in a specific skill that
may well be obsolete almost upon graduation.”
“Debunking The Myths of a Liberal Arts Education’’, S. Georgia
Nugent, Huffington Post Updated: November 1, 2014
“The world needs leaders who can handle complexity and give diverse
perspectives on the challenges we all face…it is those with backgrounds that enable them to draw from multiple cultural reference
points…who have tended to succeed and reach positions of leadership.”
“Social Science Produce Leaders’’, Scott Jaschik,
Inside Higher Education, June 1, 2015
‘‘There are profound experiences in all educational settings and
individual student effort trumps all, but year after year, data from the
National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) demonstrate that
liberal arts colleges more deeply engage their students than any
other sector.’’

Academic excellence
Our reputation for academic excellence rests on the stimulating
campus environment we create for our students. Everything you
will find here is meant to help you succeed.
Our faculty and staff are some of most dedicated you will
find anywhere. Our small classes encourage engagement and
discussion with professors and fellow students. Our liberal
education model provides the blueprint for critical thinking,
problem solving and a host of other qualities that employers
are seeking. It is all of these elements and more that make
Bishop’s a truly extraordinary learning environment.
The high quality of education we offer both inside and outside
the classroom has been recognized by Globe & Mail University
Report Card, Maclean’s University Rankings, and the National
Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), who consistently rank
Bishop’s among the best universities in Canada in our category
and for having a safe and nurturing environment.
Our professors are known for igniting a passion for learning
in our students. In turn, our students are moved to lead and
innovate. So perhaps it’s no surprise that Bishop’s was one of
only three Canadian universities to have both a 3M National
Teaching Fellowship award recipient and a 3M National Student
Fellowship award recipient in 2015. These are two of the highest
educational awards available in the country and they proudly
recognize the accomplishments of our fellow Gaiters.

colleagues and jumped at the opportunity.
“The country was looking for a way to support the principals
at the preschool, elementary and secondary levels. Haiti needs
educational leaders who can help rebuild,” says Dr. Berger.
represents 1,700 schools in Haiti, so I am very excited and
proud that we were chosen to lead the Summer Leadership
Institute last summer.”

Under the theme “La parole aux directions d’écoles haïtiennes’’,
the Summer Leadership Institute offered participants a professional training program on academic leadership and general
management so that every school in Haiti becomes a success
story despite the continuing precarious situation.
“Our team in Continuing Education organized the program in
a very short period of time,” recalls Dr. Berger. “We were there
to listen to these leaders and support them through their own
language and their own context.”
With this initiative, Bishop’s has proven its leadership role in
education. #PurplePride

You won’t want to miss these leaders and role models sharing their
hard-earned lessons about leadership, creativity, innovation,
perseverance, success, and failure.
These lectures are free of charge to our students thanks to the
generous support of Bishop’s alumnus John Donald ‘60,

- TEACHING EXCELLENCE Dr. Jamie Crooks
Philosophy professor
Music lover
2015 William and Nancy Turner
Teaching Award recipient
Moncton, New Brunswick
“The Donald Lecture Series was that missing, seamless link
between our classes and the rest of the world. It bridged that
gap, so that we could put down our textbooks to hear from
doctors in disaster zones, leading thinkers on the future of
our cities, and leaders in politics and business. And when we
opened our textbooks again, it was with new, rich insights.
Most importantly, it brought us closer as a Bishop’s community.
It taught us to apply what we had learned, and to consider the
world beyond the classroom. In that way, it is entirely true to
the Bishop’s experience.”
– Mark Lawson ’09, Past SRC President
2015 is a special year for Dr. Jamie Crooks: not only is he marking
25 years of teaching philosophy at Bishop’s, he is also the recipient of the William and Nancy Turner Teaching Award, the highest
award Bishop’s bestows to a professor each year at Convocation.
Dr. Crooks is a fixture at Bishop’s. In addition to his exceptional
career in the philosophy department, he has also directed the
Bishop’s University Singers Choir for 15 years. In fact, he still
sings in the choir today.
“One of the interesting things at Bishop’s is that you can do all
kinds of things. At no other place could I have conducted the
university choir,’’ he says.
Bishop’s is famous for its small classes which foster close connections between professors and students. Dr. Crooks feels that
he has gained as much from his students over the years as they
have from him. ‘‘We’re all on a journey. We’re all trying to discover
the deep structure of the world. We have all felt the joy of sorting
something out; we have all those fundamental human things in
common. In a certain way, age makes no difference at all,’’ he says.
Despite his accomplishments as an academic, choir conductor and
singer, Dr. Crooks is determined to go even further as a lifelong
learner. “I always want to learn new things,” he says. “I would like
to teach every course in the calendar in the philosophy department.
I would like to get better in languages. The thing about a university is that you never have to stop learning. We can take courses or
we can just enter worlds that would be closed to us otherwise.’’

Tirza Harris is fascinated by the Roman Empire and the ancient
world. Thanks to the B.E.S.T. Projects Fund, she is able to take
what she’s learned in her Classical Studies program and expand
on it. “With this project, I hope to understand the artists’ perspective. There was so much hard work and dedication put into these
works of art, hours and hours of skilled handiwork,’’ she explains.
- UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS -
“I feel that students need the interplay of both the inclass and out-of-class experience to further enhance
their academic development,” she says. “B.E.S.T.
allows you to expand yourself, your perspectives, your
mentality, and your understanding of things. I feel very
grateful for this unique opportunity.’’
‘‘It’s amazing that Bishop’s has something like the
B.E.S.T Projects Fund. It’s given me a one-of-a-kind experience that I wouldn’t be able to get anywhere else.’’
B.E.S.T. Projects Fund
B.E.S.T. is one of the premiere experiential learning opportunities at Bishop’s University. In 2010, a Bishop’s graduate
made a commitment to establish this opportunity fund at the university and students have been making the most of it
ever since. This unique possibility is meant to assist students in exploring career paths and realizing their passions. It
also gives the student the chance to enhance their learning outside the classroom.
These opportunity funds are awarded to students whom the Selection Committee believes have the potential for
significant achievement and impact once they graduate from Bishop’s. Do you have an ambition or passion that
you would like to make come true? We encourage you to be one of our B.E.S.T.!

The Success through Education, Entrepreneurship and Dedication, or S.E.E.D. Portfolio is an opportunity for students
to experience the risks and rewards of financial portfolio management. With this program, students have the opportunity to learn about portfolio management and financial markets in a practical setting working with, directing and
making decisions on an actual portfolio worth over $500,000. This hands-on and relevant experience helps place
our Williams School of Business at the forefront of Canadian business schools and helps make our students amongst
the most successful and employable in today’s job market.

Dr. Dale Wood
Chemistry professor
Brewing aficionado
Fredericton, New Brunswick
- TEACHING EXCELLENCE -
Dr. Wood’s unique project has attracted a multitude of attention,
but more importantly, it has sparked a unique exchange between
he and his students. “We have business and marketing majors
involved with the brewery; they’re working on marketing projects
with a brewery in mind,” explains Dr. Wood. “Those students will
bring into the lab things I don’t know, and contribute in ways that
are going to allow them to apply their backgrounds to something
new, something practical, something experiential.”

Viewbook 2015-2016
“We make a promise to prospective students: you come to
Bishop’s, we’re going to develop your ideas to be all they can
be, but it’s not just the students who get this advantage, it’s the
professors too. I don’t think I could have done this anywhere
else; the interdisciplinary nature of this fits perfectly with the
liberal education model here at Bishop’s.”
Dr. Wood sees many similarities between his role as an academic
and the brewmaster. “Professors, like brewmasters, are craftspeople who gather together raw materials and create conditions that
encourage transformative processes – with sometimes ineffable
results…the light bulb moments in our students when they finally
combine their preparation, hard work, and learning with a touch
of magic and a flash of insight to make sense of the world around
them in a new way,”
Photo : Krystel V. Morin
Chemistry professor Dale Wood has inspired students from various disciplines to enter his lab and study the science of brewing.
Over the years, his individual course offering has grown into what
will become Eastern Canada’s first academic brewery, opening
in Fall 2015.
“We encourage our
students to explore and
make sure their ideas are
known; I think that’s the
reason this kind of project
can work so well. I’m not
isolated in a building on
campus that’s spread
out across an entire city;
I’m exposed to the entire
community. That is liberal
education; it’s as much
about the profs learning
as the students.
I can’t imagine being
anywhere else.”

Financial Matters
Through the help of government, alumni, current students, faculty
and staff, the Bishop’s Foundation, corporations and private donors,
over 62% of our students receive financial assistance through
scholarships, awards, grants, bursaries and loans. We encourage
all students to take a look at the financial opportunities available to
them and submit an application for consideration. Just because you
aren’t top of your class, or uber involved outside the classroom, or
can’t run the fastest doesn’t mean you won’t be eligible. We have
hundreds of scholarships and awards that have a wide variety of
requirements…you never know what you might receive!
Tuition and Fees
At Bishop’s we have two main categories for all entering students:
competitive admission scholarships; and our awards and bursaries.
Competitive Scholarships
Bourses et prix
Scholarships,
Awards and Bursaries
Our scholarships range in value from $500 to $20,000 per academic
year. Some are renewable for your entire time at Bishop’s, while others
are one time awards that you can receive either as a new student or a
continuing student. To be considered, all you need to do is complete
your online application for admissions by March 15, 2016 and have
all your supporting documents to us no later than March 15, 2016.
We will then review all applicants and make scholarship offers soon
thereafter.
Awards and Bursaries
Our awards and bursaries program range from $800 to $8,000 per
academic year. Most of these awards and bursaries are one time
non-renewable available to entering students only. To be considered,
all you need to do is complete your online application for admissions
by March 15, 2016 along with sending in your supporting documents
and completing the online awards and bursaries application by this
same date. We will then review all applicants and make awards and
bursaries offers soon thereafter. In addition to academic merit, these
awards may also consider leadership and extra-curricular activities as
well as financial need.

For Quebec students applying to the Williams School of Business programs please note that while we do not require the following courses
as part of your admissions average calculation, we strongly encourage
students to have taken Calculus I and Linear Algebra courses. If you do
not have these courses you will be required to take an additional math
course outside of your degree requirements (MATH190) before you are
able to enroll in MATH 196.
DEC-BAC Agreements
Bishop’s University has a number of DEC-BAC agreements in place for students studying in the Quebec CEGEP system. CEGEP students who complete a 3-year DEC-BAC program may be eligible to receive advanced standing credit upon admission to Bishop’s.

General Admissions Information
College programs and University
Transfer Requirements
Students that have studied at a college, university or other post-secondary institution must supply final official high school transcripts as
well as all post-secondary transcripts and results. Students must be
in good standing (both academically and social conduct) and have
an overall cumulative average equivalent to 65% (Division specific
requirements may apply).
Completed courses deemed to be at a university level with a mark of
“C” or higher will be considered for advanced standing credit, up to
a maximum of 60 credits (two full years). For college students, only
those who have completed an academic diploma or are in a university
transfer program at a North American institution may be eligible to
receive advanced standing credit, depending upon college program
completed and university program applied to. Normally, no credit is
awarded for incomplete college diploma programs. In addition to transcripts, students must also provide course outlines or syllabi.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Curriculum:
Students studying an IB curriculum must supply predicted or anticipated
IB results. While not required, information such as teacher recommendations or personal statement may assist us when reviewing your
application. Please note that we do not require IB students to supply
SAT or ACT scores.
We are looking for academically strong and well-rounded students
with minimum IB diploma scores of 26 points (not including bonus) for
general entry to our university. IB Diploma students with a score of 28
or higher will automatically receive a maximum of 30 credits (one full
year) and have the option of accepting or rejecting credit as they see
fit. Students completing individual Higher Level IB courses may receive
advanced credit for all courses with a final score of 5 or higher. Please
note that IB students not completing the IB Diploma must present
proof of high school graduation. IB Career Certificate students will not
be considered for admission without an alternate high school academic
program and proof of high school graduation.

Language School Partners
Students studying a French Baccalaureate curriculum must supply their
latest baccalaureate results. While not required, information such as
teacher recommendations or personal statement may assist us when
reviewing your application. Please note that we do not require French

For students who meet our minimum academic requirements but do
not meet our ELP requirements, Bishop’s may offer conditional admission to your intended academic program provided that you meet our
ELP requirements through one of our Language School partners. For
a list of partners and for more information please check the “English

CAQ and Study
Permit Requirements
International students admitted to Bishop’s University must obtain
a study permit (often referred to as a student VISA) prior to arriving
at Bishop’s. Once students obtain their conditional or final letter of
admission they can begin the application procedure. The first step is
to complete a CAQ (Certificate of Acceptance) application with the
Quebec government (www.immigration-quebec.gouv.qc.ca/en and
click on Foreign Students). Once this permit has been approved students can then apply for a Canadian study permit (www.cic.gc.ca). It is
important to note that the process can take anywhere from 4-16 weeks
to complete so we encourage students to complete their application for
admissions early to avoid any delays.
Study and Work in Canada
Immigration policies for students who complete their university education in Canada are amongst the most marketable and sought-after in
the world. During their studies international students with valid study
permits can work off campus a maximum of 20 hours per week and full
time during holidays and summer months anywhere in Canada. Once
they obtain their degree from Bishop’s, international students are
eligible to obtain a Post-Graduation Work Permit allowing you to work
in Canada for up to three years. This valuable work experience helps
graduates qualify for permanent residency in Canada and provides you
with credentials that are recognized worldwide. For more information
on studying and working in Canada please visit www.cic.gc.ca.
