February 2015 Chowder Chatter
The Chowder Chatter The Official Newsletter of The Caloosahatchee Marching and Chowder Society Cape Coral / Fort Myers, Florida www.cmcs-sail.org Next Full Moon: February 3 P.O. Box 101268, Cape Coral, Fl. 33910 February 2015 Commodore’s Message Greetings mates! We are off and running with the new year. The Change of Watch was a great success with almost one hundred people attending. What a fun evening of drink, food, music and dancing. We all got a chance to see what we look like dolled up! What a classy group! Thanks again Elise Missall for the great job of organizing and to Barb and the Ballistics for the February brings the Edison Gulf Regatta which is our first regatta where you can accumulate points toward Boat of the Year. There is usually great wind in February, so this should be fun. There will be a house party after this race. Look for a notice announcing where it will be. Our goal this year is to get as many members as possible involved in planning, implementing and enjoying our many races, cruises and social events. The more you get involved, the better you get to know people and the more you feel like a part of what is going on. We will appreciate your efforts. The weekend of February 20-22 brings the Edison Parade of Lights. Slips at the Legacy Harbor Marina are already filling up, so you better get your name in to make sure you are there to take part in the Oyster Feast and Edison Grand Parade. Commodore Allen Fiske great music. Most of our hard work was done in the past few months lining up the correct people to take the leadership positions and planning our Calendar for the year. Everyone should have theirs by now. Now we can relax and get to the fun part, the cruises, races and social events. By the time you receive this, we will have had the first racing event of the year, the Chili Cook-Off Regatta and Dinner. I missed this last year, so I am really looking forward to tasting all those different Chili recipes. On the 12th of February, we will be having a Day Sail for those of you who don't have boats. As of this writing, my boat (Minimum Balance) and Diane Fowler's (Windy City) will be available. There may be more. Just give one of us a call to get your name on the list. Our February Membership Meeting will center around Membership Appreciation with sign-up sheets for Committees as well as Races and Cruises. We are always in need of dedicated volunteers to act as Race Committee Helpers and power boats for Race Committee and Mark Boats. Finally, John Churchill, our Vice Commodore of Racing, has reached out to us for some support. He needs help with some of the aspects of reporting activity to the Membership and BOD. Think seriously about pitching in. We don't want to lose him. Your new Commodore, Allen Fiske s/v Minimum Balance 2015 CMCS Officers Commodore: Allen Fiske Vice Commodore: Don Lawson Vice Commodore – Summerset: Steve Romaine Rear Commodore – Cruising: Kim Brown Rear Commodore – Racing: John Churchill Fleet Yeoman – Bev Duff Fleet Purser – Bill Cook Past Commodore – Diane Fowler Chowder Chatter Editor—Steve Roake CMCS Chowder Chatter February 2015 Page 2 Rear Commodore of Racing’s Report Change of Watch Dinner Recap Hello Sailors, welcome to the 2015 CMCS racing season. It is with great anticipation that I have taken on the role of Rear Commodore for Racing. I would like to thank Stan Dale and Steve Roake for assisting with the transition and Tony Solgard for agreeing to be our Official Rear Commodore– Racing Scorer. If you were not there you missed a good time. We had 91 folks sign up and they dined and danced their way through the evening to the music of Barb & The Ballistics. Sadly, 3 couples were not able to attend due to the nasty Flu going around. John Churchill Our first race of the year was intended to be the Chili Cook off Regatta on January 24. Unfortunately, I failed my first task as Rear Commodore by not scheduling favorable weather for the event, and the regatta was cancelled due to anticipated high winds. It has not been rescheduled at this time. Our next race will be the Edison Gulf Regatta on February 7. This is a Caloosahatchee Boat of the Year Event, so we hope for a big turnout. This regatta will take place off of Ft. Myers Beach in the Gulf of Mexico. The starting area will be in the usual spot, in the vicinity of Marker 2, entrance to San Carlos Bay. The race format will be up to three buoy races. Plan on a skipper/crew party after the race. Time and location to be announced as this date draws closer. Stan Dale, Rear Commodore of Racing awarded trophies to the 2014 racing winners. The Baumgartner Award was presented to Steve Romaine and Cindy Carlino. Upcoming Racing Events Susan Reekie, Rear Commodore of Cruising presented the Cruising & Exploration Award to Kim Brown & Judy Anderson. February 7 March 14 Bev Duff, Past Commodore, presented the Good Samaritan Award to Mel Rudd. Rear Commodore-Racing John Churchill s/v Nurdle Edison Gulf Regatta Shrimp Festival Regatta Golden Conch Regatta The Golden Conch Regatta was hosted by the Platinum Point Yacht Club on January 17-18, 2015. 25 boats participated in the regatta in Charlotte Harbor off of Burnt Store Marina. In the True Cruising “B” Division (7 boats) Diane Fowler’s Windy City was first overall. In the Non-Spinnaker Division (7 boats), Roger Horton’s Wicked Wicked Ways was fourth overall and Steve Romaine’s Air Supply was fifth overall. Congratulations to CMCS Racers! Commodore Diane Fowler introduced the new Flag Officers and Board members and bestowed upon new Commodore, Allen Fiske, the beloved Captain's hat and the lethal sword. It was fun to see longtime members and some new faces enjoying the evening and everyone looking quite elegant, as well. My special thanks go to Sue Stier and Connie Ridout for working the Welcome table and checking everyone into the party.....good job!! Fair Sailing, Elise Missall Past Commodore, 2000 CMCS Chowder Chatter February 2015 Page 3 Rear Commodore of Cruising’s Report RC-Cruising’s Report—Continued Thanks to John and Susan for a great year. We can only hope to have half as much fun this year. Having finished up the New Year’s cruise (and started the New Year) with 2 absolutely perfect nights on the hook in Pelican Bay, TrustMe!!!, at least, is off to a good start. Susan’s Rear Commodore-Cruising full report is elsewhere. Kim Brown Cancellations less than 72 hours prior to reservation will result in charge of one night’s dockage. Carolyn Wilson is promising to punch you on arrival. I think that involves rum but only if you behave. EPOL is coming up fast. Paul Steinman and Rose Ann Hoffman are again heading the effort of the many. Please say yes if they ask you to lend a hand. Contact them directly if you haven’t already signed up on the list. Those that can will start the celebration on Friday night. Care should be taken while heading to Legacy on Friday the 20th. It is the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Fort Myers that day and Confederate sympathizers may be about. Oysters at high noon (1200 hrs for you nautical types) Saturday. I have been sharpening my shucking knife. Then a potluck at 1800 (see I can do nautical). Seems like every year there is one dish that shows up a lot. What it is varies from year to year (remember the meatball year?) Makes you wonder if there is a CMCS cooking channel that everyone is going to for their inspiration. By boat or car - be there for the grand parade Saturday night. Remember to light up your boat as we honor one of the first of too many tourists from NJ. March has us heading to Pelican Bay the 20th through the 22nd. No fancy sign up sheet- just show up for a good time. I will be arm twisting at the February meeting. I am looking for a few good cruise leaders to fill out the calendar. I have a number of ‘regulars’ who are taking a break this year so opportunities are available. Back in the ‘old days’ when I raced, the rule of thumb was that if you raced you were more than happy to be committee boat at least once in the year. So, if you cruise, you should be more than happy to help out. If you don’t cruise, you should. For you long range planners, the holiday cruise is more days away than I can count (Steve Romaine may know). BUT we have 15 slips lined up for New Year’s at Fisherman’s Village in Punta Gorda. The early alert is because this usually has a wait list. Reservations are to be made ONLY with Randy Chevalier at Fisherman’s Village. Phone 941-5753000 or contact randy@fishville.com Credit card is required with reservation. Ian Davis is looking for “club members who don't mind sharing a cruising boat with strangers for a couple of days and nights to get in contact with me.” Ian is trying to become a reformed racer and to cruise this year – see calendar for contact info. Note for anyone who is planning a longer journey (Bahamas, Keys, Points North) I’d be glad to plug same in hopes of matching you with like minded boats. Better than eHarmony, I promise. And if you are journeying please keep us updated so we can live vicariously through your adventures and misadventures. Theme for the year is no whining. We live in a beautiful area and get to enjoy it in ways others can only dream of. So relax; go with the flow and enjoy. I love good ideas and consider ‘complaint’, ‘suggestion’, and ‘idea’ all to be synonyms for ‘volunteer’. Fair winds, Kim Brown s/v TrustMe!!! They are interested in cruising and socializing with other CMCS members and getting involved with the club. Pat is a retired educator and Gay is retired from Verizon. Bev Slager CMCS Chowder Chatter February 2015 Page 4 Vice Commodore—Summerset’s Report VC—Summerset’s Report Continued In 1965 the Pontiac GTO was introduced. The Pontiac brand is gone, the original GTO ended production in 1974. The Summerset Regatta also started in 1965 and we are still going strong, 50 continuous years later. This year we celebrate the success of Summerset by the traditional distance and buoy races off Fort Myers Beach, wonderful parties, great door Vice Commodore- prizes for participants, special Summerset “Golden Jubilee” caps and shirts, Steve Romaine and super grant fund and financial assistance to youth sailing. Starting in February, collared short-sleeve Summerset shirts will be available. These will come in three colors, with the 50th Anniversary Summerset Logo and your boat name embroidered on it. We will also have personalized caps in navy blue, all in celebration of this anniversary year. Each will be specialordered and must be paid for in advance. We will have samples to show you at the February 17th general membership meeting at the Cape Coral Yacht Club. The dates of the 50th Summerset Regatta are October 9th – 11th, with the shore-side events at Bonita Bills, Pink Shell Pool, and Diamond Head Resort. Every one of us will be involved this year, as a committee member, sponsor, volunteer, or participant. This will ensure that our guests, (of which there are many, and who are very supportive of our major events) have the opportunity to enjoy this fantastic event. It is possible to have 75 boats for our anniversary year, and we wish to put our best foot forward for the enjoyment of everyone. Your planning committees will be working hard to see that this will be the regatta to remember. Less than 250 days left until the 50th Summerset Regatta! Steve Romaine Vice Commodore-Summerset SGRomaine294@gmail.com 482-6280 PS – Sponsor News! Check out the Offshore Sailing School’s new website, OFFSHORESAILING.COM. Very complete, very informative, great pictures and video by a very professional company. We are proud to call the Offshore Sailing School one of our Platinum/Name sponsors for many years. Due to great support in 2014, 35 youth sailing grants, more than the year before, are available at the Edison Sailing Center. Our ESC Grant Fund Administrator, Marla Parker (910-0554) stands ready to process applications. Distributions have been made to youth sailing programs in Tampa Bay, Charlotte Harbor, Naples and Marco Island. Thankyou notes have been received from these established training centers, acknowledging our support from the profits of the 49th Summerset Regatta. West Marine Community Day will be held on Wednesday, April 8th, 2015. Port Supply prices will be honored and our support will be vital in order for West Marine to exceed last year’s sales of $32,000, five percent of which goes to the Edison Sailing Center. Editors Note: The Ostego Bay Foundation is one of the recipients of CMCS’ support from the Summerset Regatta proceeds. Please help support their programs. CMCS Chowder Chatter February 2015 Page 5 New Officer Biographical Sketches Captain Allen Fiske, Commodore Allen comes from a small town in central Massachusetts and spent most of his summers on Cape Cod and Rhode Island beaches and waters. His dad built him a nine-foot sailing pram when he was ten years old. He lived in Massachusetts for 28 years and graduated from American International College in Springfield with a BS in Business Administration. He lived in Connecticut for about 15 years, owning three sailboats during that time ranging from 24' to 30' and did much sailing on Long Island Sound. He had a dream of moving to a warm climate, living on a sailboat and eventually taking a year or two to go cruising. At age 36 he was in a car wreck and became a paraplegic. He figured that was the end of his dream and sold his boat. Ironically, at about the same time, a sailor from Newport, Rhode Island by the name of Harry Horgan became a paraplegic and started Shake-A-Leg, developing an accessible sailboat called the Freedom Independence Twenty. Allen sailed for a couple of years with them in Newport and then decided to move to South Florida. Coincidentally, in 1990, Shake-A-Leg opened a branch in Miami. Allen was hired as Outreach Director for Shake-ALeg Miami in 1994 and over a twelve year period held many positions ending up as Director of Watersports and Fleet and Facility Maintenance until retiring in 2006. During his time there, he helped Miami’s Community Sailing Center and Shake-ALeg to become the nation’s largest disabled sailing program. Don Lawson, Vice Commodore Don Lawson and his wife, Joan Perkett, have been members of CMCS since 2006. They joined the club after moving to Cape Coral from Colorado where Don worked for Sybase/ SAP for 20 years as Director of Real Estate for the Americas. Don’s work gave him the opportunity to travel extensively in North America as well as into Latin and South America. He graduated from the University of Nebraska at Kearney with a BS degree in Business Administration, Economics and Journalism. During his college years he worked in radio and television and later became a reporter, editor and photojournalist for various newspapers. Before joining Sybase/SAP he worked in purchasing and contracts administration for Teknetics. a supplier and manufacturer of mil-spec power supplies. Don and Joan learned to sail in Colorado on Carter Lake taking courses through the American Sailing Association. Their first boat was a 19 foot Precision that they used extensively before moving to Florida and becoming full time residents. They now have a 31 foot Hunter and also enjoy traveling and camping in their 33 foot Tiffin Allegro Open Road motor home. They have two children, two grandsons and two dogs – a Great Dane and a West Highland Terrier. He is an active Amateur Radio operator, licensed as KB0LPM, and a member of the Fort Myers Amateur Radio Club and ALERT – the All Lee Emergency Response Team. He is also a member of the Cape Coral CERT organization. Don has held a variety of positions in CMCS – Historian and Photographer, Chowder Chatter editor and Director. Joan has served as Yeoman, Fleet Recruiter, Vice Commodore of Summerset, Vice Commodore and Commodore. CMCS Chowder Chatter February 2015 Page 6 New Officer Biographical Sketches Kim Brown, Rear Commodore of Cruising John Churchill, Rear Commodore of Racing Kim and Judy just kept moving South. They were raised in Minneapolis and Wisconsin respectively. After marrying, they spent 8 years in St. Louis before arriving in Ft. Myers in 1981. They have not looked back. Casting about for something outdoorsy Florida to do, they signed up for Now an adult-ed class on sailing taught by John Guzzetta. They have been active CMCS sailors ever since. Their first sailboat was a Mirage 20 (UffDa) in the early 80’s and they have moved up over the years through a succession of TrustMe’s. The current TrustMe!!!, a C&C 35, earned the name as Kim bought it without Judy ever having laid eyes on it. They are still married. Their daughter Marta started out sailing in a car seat strapped to the mast below. She currently is in Seattle where she performs and teaches acrobatics. Kim and Judy are strictly cruisers Then! now but a little known fact is that Kim was once young enough and light enough to work foredeck on a local J-24. I grew up as a boat crazy kid far from salt water in Indiana, learned to sail on my first boat, a Sailfish at age 12, then on to a Snipe. Built a few boats along the way, from 8 to 20 feet, did some chartering while in school, then got my first big boat, a Cape Dory 26 which I sailed from Virginia to Bermuda and back singlehanded, followed by a Bristol Channel Cutter that I cruised from Maine to the Bahamas, as a warm up for a transAtlantic with my father, ending in Norway. I have had a pile of boats in between as well, usually projects of some sort. Now I live on Sanibel, work in Ft Myers as a pediatric orthopedic surgeon when I am not fooling around with NURDLE, my Bristol 35.5 CB. I joined racing as a way to build my skills while making sure that I cram some sailing into my hectic schedule. Kim works with small tech companies as a freelance CFO and Judy is a counselor. Both are counting the days to retirement. Chili Cook-Off Dinner Recap CMCS hosted its annual Chili Cook-Off Dinner at the Cape Coral Yacht Club on Sunday, January 25. As usual, Candice Thiele did a superb job organizing this event. Almost onehundred people enjoyed the efforts of twelve chili chefs. Competition was broken down into four categories: Hottest Chili; Best Traditional Chili; Best Original Chili; and Best Decorated Booth. Sandy Canning won the award for hottest chili. Kathleen Vance won the award for best traditional chili. George and Pixie Noyes won the award for best original chili, and Sigrid Diedricksen won the award for best decorated booth. Carolyn Preston won the lifetime achievement award for best apron! Most importantly, all went home well fed after having a great time! Steve Roake CMCS Chowder Chatter February, 2015 Ladies Bridge Club The next gathering for the Ladies Bridge Club will be February 10th from 3:30-5 PM at the Callusa Nature Center and Planetarium, 3450 Ortiz Avenue, Fort Myers. Nineteen CMCS members sauntered up to the still in the Wicked Dolphin’s production room at 3 PM on Monday January 6th. We were treated to an explanation of the finer points of a rum distillation process that uses exclusively Florida products at this recent addition to the Cape Coral business community. In the best tradition of Southern hospitality the women and men (yes, they were included for this tour) enjoyed some Wicked Dolphin Punch during the early part of the tour. Multiple questions that were fielded by our well-versed guide gave us a better understanding of the process that creates their delectable liquids. We closed Page 7 Holiday Cruise Recap The holiday cruise was blessed with warmer than usual weather for the end of December. We arrived at Pelican Bay on the 27th to find Zydeco, Barefeet and Silver Sea already anchored for the evening. On the 28th Kestrel II, Samphire and Chase the Clouds joined the CMCS fleet. Zydeco was the party boat for happy hour that night, many thanks to Linda & Mike. Carol Pim's Gopher Baroque with crew members Gordon Coffman & two boy scouts arrived on Monday. As our group grew Bev & Bob Duff graciously hosted happy hour that night aboard Chase the Clouds. Tuesday morning we awoke to thick FOG. Were Dot & Eric on Samphire homesick? The fog lifted about noon and Kestrel II, Silver Sea, Samphire and Lazy Susan made our way north to Fishermen's Village Marina in Punta Gorda. Already there were the Corrells on Breezin' Up. New Years Eve arrivals were Gopher Baroque, Grateful, Jazzy, Chase the Clouds and Trust Me !!! We all gathered in the boaters' day room for a pot luck dinner with 40 CMCS members & guests in attendance. The marina provided live music again this year and some of us were actually able to stay awake until midnight to welcome in 2015. New Years Day the club boats headed home with some spending the night in Pelican Bay. Sailing with great friends was a wonderful way to start the NEW YEAR! Smooth Sailing, John & Susan Reekie s/v Lazy Susan The usual suspects! out the day’s informational tour by gathering in the gift shop where we were offered samples of the distillery’s Coconut Flavored Rum, Golden Spiced Rum, and Blueberry Rumshine. We are happy to report that the entire “crew” was on its best behavior! This pleased the Wicked Dolphin staff so much that they gave us nearly unlimited access to purchase their bottled rum, a variety of brightly colored shirts, and other pretty things that could be traded with the natives who inhabit the Cape.
