David a 299 PHRF rating and application says interested in
racing & cruising. He is in the Marine Canvas trade here in
the Cape and used to be a Registered Nurse. Back in 1975,
he sailed with a past member, Alan Hazelton, so he’s familiar with CMCS. In 1976, David was sailing the CMCS sponsored St Pete to Ft. Myers Beach race when his boat was
dismasted. He credits the fast thinking of Eleanor Hazelton
with saving his life!

have been coming to the Cape for many years visiting relatives. They moved from Illinois to Tennessee where they

As usual CMCS “ruled” the Locks. We had all the boat
slips, the covered picnic area with four large tables and
the giant grill for our massive “gang” BBQ’s. Our cocktail parties were followed by great food every night. On
Sunday morning, 10:06 sharp, we loaded our dinghies
and set out for Hickey Creek. After a short trip up the
river, we made the turn in to the creek. Shirley Maddix
was the first person to spot the camel, winning a great
prize. The dinghy cruise continued at a moderate pace
through the winding creek. Unfortunately, a heavy
growth of arugula fouled all the props, making headway
more dangerous than imaginable. Along the way, we
saw bison and several breeds of horses.
We returned to the shelter of the picnic pavilion for the
Skip Bo tournament, only to be driven to our boats by a
deluge and 30 knot winds. Later that evening, we had a
fantastic BBQ and pot luck dinner. Monday, after a late
breakfast, we set out for a dinghy cruise upriver. Several
outboard motors were feeling the strain from the Hickey
Creek arugula fiasco, and refused to perform to CMCS
standards, thus requiring many tows.

The Firecracker Night Race
came close to a fizzle without a bang!
However, despite dire warnings, the weather cooperated and we had a great race. Even using Government marks, we
were able to use the buoy ratings. The weather leg was a beat for the most part, and the 2nd leg was a spinnaker run.
Because of concerns about weather ( rightly so ), Jerry Pim on Gopher Baroque was left to race in a class by himself.
To his credit, he sailed the entire course despite being offered a chance to have the Race Committee shorten the race for
him. He’s a winner!
Forrest Banks on Midnight Rider really sailed that boat well and easily won the Spinnaker Class. A new member of
CMCS, Greg Davis, finished 2nd in his Beneteau 393, Kokopelli Too and another new member, Joel Andrews, 3rd. On
Desperado — Beneteau 343. Joel won the Sunworshippers Race and thought he would give others a chance this time.
Beautiful trophies will be awarded at the next General Meeting on Tuesday, August 15.

4TH OF JULY CRUISE ON SPINDRIFT
WOW, what a 4th of July we spent on Spindrift. Took a chance and called the Ft. Myers Marina (Centennial
Harbour Marina is now called Legacy Harbour Marina) on Monday, July 3. Figured they would be booked solid
months in advance. No, they had plenty of slips available. The Cape Coral Sailing Club had reserved 12 slips only 5 of their boats showed up. The marina was more than half empty!
Called friends visiting from CT and left
a message - did they want to sail up to Ft. Myers for the fireworks and spend the night.....absolutely!
We were in our slip ($38) by noon on the 4th, had lunch on the boat, swam in the pool and were sitting at Joe's
Crab Shack bar at 3:00 p.m. for the World Cup soccer game, then a delicious dinner.
The fireworks barge was being loaded less than 200 yards from our slip! I was glad when they finally hauled it
out to the middle of the river! They had a variety of bands all afternoon at Centennial Park - again about 200
decibel-friendly yards from us. Just as the first volley of fireworks went up in front of us, a young entertainer
started singing America the Beautiful. Goose bumps. The fireworks were EXCELLENT, and they played patriotic music the entire fireworks display.
The a.c. for our boat had been sitting in the garage 3 1/2 years - never used. Dick & Glenn put it in the hatchway - plugged it in - worked perfectly. LIFE IS GOOD.

FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY
Our July speaker, John Hodgkinson, recommended that
we hold our boat fire extinguishers upside down and listen
for the powder falling to the opposite end. If you do not
hear anything after a couple of attempts, it’s probably time
to replace / invest in a new fire extinguisher.
NO SCORES, BUT A GREAT TIME!!
Had a great turn-out last month, but due to racing all
day in the rain, the paper the RC was using to keep track
of things disintegrated!!! So we have no scores. BUT everyone had a great time, there was steady, shifty wind,
and the light rain (with NO lightening) kept everyone
really cool.
Who knows what the summer weather will dish up for
us this Sunday (July 23), but no matter what, we will
have a good time, so come on out and sail!
A new acronym for fire extinguisher use is as follows:
Pull the pin at the top of the extinguisher that keeps the
handle from being accidentally pressed.
Aim the nozzle toward the base of the fire. Stand approximately 8 feet away from the fire.
Squeeze the handle to discharge the extinguisher. If you
release the handle, the discharge will stop.
Sweep the nozzle back and forth at the base of the fire. After the fire appears to be out, watch it carefully since it may
re-ignite!

Next month, Sunfish Races are scheduled for Sunday,
August 20 at the Edison Sailing Center. We will have a
Skipper meeting at noon, start at 1 pm and race until we
get tired, usually around 4:30 or 5.
