FOREwORD
welcome to the Port of Genoa. I have great pleasure
in presenting the new edition of the Handbook which
provides an insight into the wide range of services on
offer in Italy’s premier port.
Notwithstanding the slowdown in the global
economy, a surge in containerised cargo this past year
has firmly established the Port of Genoa amongst
the top gateway ports in Southern Europe. In fact,
Genoa is heading for a new record, as it is poised
to break comfortably the two million teu barrier and
register over 50 million tons of total traffic. A strong
performance across the board has been bolstered by
sizable investment programmes on the part of both the
Port Authority and the terminal operating companies
which have successfully catered for new market
requirements, such as vessel upsizing, through the
extension and reconstruction of quays, the completion
of dredging operations, and the acquisition of new
handling equipment.
In the meantime, Genoa continues to draw on its
invaluable expertise inherited from an age-long
seafaring tradition, and moves ahead with new feats
of engineering which have always been a byword
for growth and development in the port. The Port
Authority of Genoa is overseeing the construction of a
new breakwater to meet the future challenges posed
by the advent of the ultra-large container ships. wider
approach channels from the open sea to the port
facilities, wider turning basins, a bold approach to equip
Genoa to cater successfully for the behemoth container
ships: the focal point of the New Port Masterplan.
The Port Authority sits at the heart of a vibrant shipping
industry in which the leading stakeholders work
together to provide a high service quality to all users,
spanning the entire supply chain through a real-time
cargo tracking system linked into the Genoa Port
Community System (E-Port). In addition, the Port of
Genoa has been instrumental in its support of central
government to streamline the Italian Port Authorities,
and has put forward a package of proposals to speed
up efficiency and to provide the Italian ports in general
with a sharper competitive edge.
Our objective is to equip the Port of Genoa with
the infrastructure, facilities and space to enable it to
continue to grow, a port which plans for the future.
As you will see from the latest edition of our Port of
Genoa Handbook.

2000 years of trade
Since ancient times, the economic development
of Genoa has been inextricably linked to its
harbour.
From as far back as the sixth century BC, the early
foundations of the town were erected on the hill
of Castello, around the originaI settlement in the
naturaI harbour by the promontory of the Old Pier.
This layout remained unchanged from Roman
times to the Middle Ages.
10
Below
Carlo Bossoli, The Harbour of Genoa, 1835-1846.
After the year 1000, with the rekindling of trade,
sea transport regained importance and the first
wooden piers were built by noble merchant
families.
National unification in the 19th century and the opening
of the Suez Canal concurred to promote maritime
trade further. In response, two piers (still visible today),
railways and drydocks were built in the port.
From the 14th century onwards, the development
of sea transport, growing prosperity and the
expansion of the port heavily influenced events in
the history of Genoa which, by then, had become
one of the major Mediterranean powers.
In 1903 the Port Authority of Genoa, appointed by
the government to manage and operate the port,
spurred on the expansion of the harbour. In 1969
the Port of Genoa inaugurated the first container
terminal in the Mediterranean basin.

Genoa has the strategic advantage
Located in the most sheltered bay of the
Ligurian Sea, the Port of Genoa has today
assumed its rightful role as the premier
Southern European gateway for Far East traffic
moving via the Suez Canal and for trade with
North Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean,
and has successfully capitalised upon its
invaluable experience and professionalism
inherited from its age-long seafaring tradition to
provide a high level service quality to all users.
Today the Port of Genoa features a 22-kilometre
coastline which stretches seamlessly from
the old port area westwards to the new port
in Voltri, and covers a total surface area of
approximately 6 million sqm of land and 14.5
million sqm of seawater. It is a multi-service port
which boasts 25 specialised terminals, managed
of Northern Italy and Southern Europe with easy
access to/from the major inland routes, so that the
large volumes of containerisable and other cargo
generated in this area are naturally tributary to the
Port of Genoa. All developments at the port are
geared towards improving the already substantial
road and rail connections with these markets.
by top private terminal operating companies,
equipped to accommodate all classes of ships
and cater for all key commodity sectors: container,
general cargo, perishable goods, steel, forest
products, solid bulk, liquid bulk, petroleum products
and cruise and ferry passengers.
In addition, backed-up by a group of dedicated
companies, the port guarantees a full range of vital
complementary services from ship maintenance
and repair to customised telecommunications and
data processing. Whilst agents, forwarders, brokers
and insurers are all major components of Genoa’s
vibrant shipping community and are equipped to
meet the diverse requirements of terminal users
at a competitive price. Genoa is also home to
classification society RINA and Italy’s foremost
merchant marine academy.
From Milan and Turin, Genoa is only 150 km away,
Bale (Switzerland) 517 km, Munich
(Germany) 627 km and Vienna (Austria) 963
km. Block trains are loaded on-dock at many of
the port’s terminals and offer direct services to
international destinations, as well as to major
Italian cities.

Infrastructure works begin
The port industry, along with other industrial
sectors, is undergoing great change, which
naturally has repercussions on the local
economy of the city-ports. Consequently, the
optimal planning of valuable land resources
on the part of the port authorities is of major
importance, not only to rationalise port layout
and activities and to cater for new market
requirements, such as vessel upsizing, but also
in terms of overseeing economic development.
Within this framework, the Port Authority
Over 150 regular liner services connect Genoa
with 450 ports worldwide, offering a wide
variety of choice to importers and exporters, as
the Ligurian city offers an excellent geographical
mix of ports of destination, with particular focus
on the Far and Middle East and Indian subcontinent, and with increases in ship calls to
the emerging markets in the Mediterranean and
Africa.
Genoa offers substantial savings to shippers
and shipping lines alike when employed as
a gateway port. Use of the port as premier
southern gateway into Europe for Far East cargo,
as opposed to a Northern European port, saves
an extra 1,847 nautical miles and almost a
week’s sailing.
In 1994 the government passed the Italian law
of port reform which introduced the privatisation
14
of Genoa and the private terminal operating
companies are firmly committed to implementing
sizeable investment programmes to upgrade port
facilities and to boost trade further.
In the short term, works are underway to
landfill and restructure specific areas in the port
terminals to optimise berth occupation and
extend current yard operating surface, improve
road and rail access and ease the flow of trucks
to/from the port, and to expand the storage
facilities where the port’s value-added services
are generated.
of port operations, whilst also calling for the
establishment of new streamlined landlord port
authorities. To date, the Port Authority of Genoa
is responsible for the governance of the port
concessions, port masterplan, infrastructure
investment programmes, enforcement of safety
and security standards and the global promotion
of port services. Whilst leading port management
companies have assumed direct roles in the
operation of Genoese terminals, and have shown
themselves committed to investing in facilities
and equipment.
In fact, positive growth across the board has
characterised the Port of Genoa in recent years.
Despite an ongoing adverse world trading
climate, Genoa still ranks as the premier port in
Italy in terms of total throughput
and amongst the top Mediterranean gateway
container ports.

Additional space is set to come onstream
in Genoa
A strong performance in Genoa’s container port
industry in recent years has been bolstered by
investment programmes on the part of the Port
Authority and the terminal operating companies.
Furthermore, they are firmly committed to meeting
the future challenges posed by the advent of the
ultra large container ships which will radically
change the overall layout of the port.
16
In the mid-term, new terminal development at
Calata Bettolo moves ahead to construct, through
land reclamation, a new 750-linear metre quay
with an alongside depth of 17.5 metres, capable of
accommodating the latest generation of container
vessels. The new box terminal will be equipped to
handle 550,000 TEU per annum and will feature
a 180,000-sqm yard. The Calata Bettolo container
terminal is scheduled for completion in 2016/2017.
In the Sampierdarena basin the landfill underway
between Ronco and Canepa piers, financed by the Port
Authority, will create a 680-metre quay with an alongside
depth of 15 metres with new yard space, adding a further
63,000 sqm, for a total of 300,000 sqm within two
years. In the mid-term, further land reclamation will be
carried out between Canepa and Libia piers, as part of
the Messina Terminal and Terminal San Giorgio’s joint
investment plan.
In addition, the Port Authority of Genoa is committed to
overseeing and improving all inland connections to cater
for the future growth in traffic which the latest generation
of container vessels will generate.
17
Handbook 2014/2015
Handbook 2014/2015
In fact, a range of major rail infrastructure
projects are underway:
· The €5.5 billion third railway pass through the
Apennine Mountains linking Genoa’s docks to
the major consumer and industrial centres in
Lombardy and Piemonte: €500 million has been
allocated by the government and the first phase
of the project is under construction.
· The €600 million project to restructure Genoa’s
rail node which will allow for the effective
separation of freight and passenger traffic in
the Voltri and Sampierdarena area, the two
major port basins. Specifically, works to double
the capacity of the Ronco/Canepa pier rail link
of Messina Terminal are in progress and are
scheduled to be completed by the end of 2016.
In addition, a new rail link is to be constructed
in Eritrea pier, also in the Sampierdarena basin.
Whilst Voltri Terminal Europa is the focus of an
investment programme designed to double the
current capacity of its rail line to 24 trains/day
with a minimum of 24 rail cars/train.
· The €50 million project to upgrade the
Campasso tunnel, linking the national rail
network to SECH Terminal and to the new Calata
Bettolo Container Terminal, is under construction
and is scheduled for completion in 2017.
The completion of these rail projects will improve
the intermodal split in Genoa and boost the
volume of inland container traffic moved by rail
to approximately 40%, and equip the port to
accommodate 750-metre freight trains.
Sampierdarena basin: current breakwater.
Sampierdarena basin: planned breakwater.
The new breakwater
solution in Genoa to overcome the navigational
restrictions imposed by the introduction of the ultralarge container vessels. The plan has already received
funding, allocated to the project management, from
the EU within the TEN-T programme. The cost of the
completion of the new breakwater is estimated at 1
billion euros, within a five-year timeframe from the
start of construction works.
In the long term, Genoa’s New Port Masterplan
– the port’s development programme through to 2030
– is a bold response to the need to meet the future
challenges posed by the advent of the behemoth
container ships, which is essential if the port is to
continue to grow as it has over the past years.
Consequently, the focal point of the Masterplan is a
review of the existing approach channels from the
open sea to the port facilities, specifically, the turning
basins to the east and west of the Sampierdarena
basin and that of the Prà-Voltri basin. The objective
is for the Port of Genoa to be in a strong position
to accommodate the future 18,000/22,000 teucontainer vessels once they are deployed across the
liner services in the Asia-Mediterranean trade lane.
To date, the largest deployed vessels on the AsiaMediterranean route are the 14,000 teu ships which
call regularly at the Port of Genoa.
Within this framework, the construction of a new
breakwater has been identified as the optimal

Assisted by its high-capacity electronic platform,
the Port Authority of Genoa has been instrumental
in setting up trial projects involving all parties
concerned in the logistics supply chain, from
vessel operators to customs authorities.
The E-Port of the future
The rationalisation and acceleration of port community
data exchange is the key to improving the efficiency
in handling high volumes of traffic where bottlenecks
and delays are costly, and consequently the Port of
Genoa is firmly committed to an intensive use and
expansion of its E-port system.
The Port Authority of Genoa is pivotal in coordinating
the Genoa Port Community System which groups
together the multiple systems used by all the major
players actively involved in the transport and logistics
chains operating in the Port of Genoa. Last year,
E-port processed over 10 million import/export
electronic documents, including customs declarations,
ship manifests, delivery and container release notes,
booking import and load lists, loading reports, gate
in/gate out management and truckload arrival
notifications. In addition, the Customer Service Call
Centre handled approximately 90,000 requests, of
which 80% were resolved within five minutes from
the call being made.
In cooperation with the Customs Authorities, the
Port Authority completed the development of the
new pre-clearing procedures, whereby the ship’s
manifest is transmitted for customs clearance
approximately 48 hours prior to the vessel’s arrival
at the port. Today, approximately 80% of vessels
are pre-cleared prior to their arrival at the Port of
Genoa, thereby expediting the off-loading process
of the containerised cargo onto the trucks for the
onward journey overland. In fact, E-port has been
instrumental in cutting substantially the transit time
of container shipments through the Port of Genoa.
In addition, significant investment is being made
in new IT devices in order to set up a “single-stop
window” programme for cargo inspections and
document operations, including sanitary inspections.
Furthermore, Genoa has been appointed test-bed
for a major new real-time cargo tracking system
designed to link the berth with inland port facilities
via motorway, thus speeding up the flow
20
of goods between the port and its leading markets.
The new National Logistic Platform, managed
by Uirnet on behalf of the Italian Ministry for
Infrastructure and Transport, will allow the cargo
to be tracked in real-time as it is freighted by road
between the inland ports and Genoa’s marine
terminals, with full information on a truck’s position,
traffic or missing documentation, relayed to the
port terminal and designated shipping company.
The system, which will be integrated directly into
the e-port EDI system, is scheduled to come into
force soon, and in due course will also apply to rail
transport.
Genoa’s strategic location, committed and
experienced terminal operators, high-tech
handling equipment, state-of-the-art IT services:
everything is in place to boost the Port of Genoa’s
leadership in the Mediterranean, and strengthen
its position as centre of cargo handling excellence
and as a modern logistics platform serving Italy,
the Mediterranean and Europe overall.

facilities which include 8 post-Panamax and 4
Super post-Panamax quayside cranes and 20
RTGs. Since VTE came into operation in 1994,
the terminal has experienced constant growth.
The future will see no let-up in this process as
management plans to sharpen handling capacity
in the medium term. In fact, VTE maintains its
strong client base through its firm commitment
to achieve higher productivity and reliability, and
ranks as one of the most efficient operators in the
Mediterranean. Far East services coming through
the Suez Canal can consider Voltri
as a natural gateway to Europe, using its
intermodal connections to distribute their cargo
instead of sailing an extra six days to Northern
European ports.
VTE features a direct on-terminal motorway
connection which allows fast access to the A26 and
A6 for Milan and Turin as well as the A10 south
to La Spezia and west to France. An automated
real-time container tracking system, coupled
with 12 lanes for container traffic and 2 for noncontainerised and heavylift cargo, ensure fast gate
clearance. The terminal has the capacity to handle
over 2000 trucks daily.
The facility, equipped with 4 RMGs, also offers
direct on-terminal rail links with the Genoa/
Ventimiglia and Genoa/Milan and Turin railway
lines, and a dedicated rail line capable of handling
high cube containers.
In addition to container handling and related
services, VTE offers 3 dedicated ro-ro berths and an
extensive Distripark Area with 7000 sqm of modern
office space, some 20,000 sqm of warehousing
where electronics, rubber/plastic materials, toys,
wallpaper and breakbulk are primarily handled,
and a 2,500-sqm area devoted to a full range of
dedicated services for road-haulage companies.
Important efficiency gains have resulted from a
new high-tech Terminal Operating System which
has been tailored to VTE’s specific requirements
and is designed to facilitate yard management and
berth allocation, and accelerate gate-in gate-out
movements. In addition, the company benefits
from the E-port custom connection within the Port
Community System, and offers seamless internet
and EDI access for customers.

CONTAINER HANDLING
SECH, which has been operating the Calata Sanità
container terminal since 1993, is one of the first
and, therefore, most experienced private operators
in Italy, thriving in the competitive market of the
North Tyrrhenian Sea. Its maximum yearly capacity
of 500,000 TEU sets SECH among the main
gateway terminals throughout the country.
The terminal benefits from a highly favourable
position, both in terms of access by sea (vessels
berth at the terminal quay in less than an
hour after entering the port) and by land, as
it is conveniently linked to the main overland
transportation networks.
This strategic location, together with investments
in human resources, equipment and IT, makes the

GRUPPO MESSINA SPA
CONTAINER HANDLING
One of the longest established companies
operating in the Port of Genoa, GRUPPO MESSINA
S.p.A is by no means anchored in the past.
The company’s philosophy is to develop a fully
intermodal operation with control over its own
shipping services, handling facilities and onward
intermodal transportation to ensure a reliable
high quality service package. The Messina Group,
alongside its shipping company IGNAZIO MESSINA
& C S.p.A., has been operating liner services with
its own Italian registered tonnage since 1921. With
the overall transformation of the business activity
from conventional ship owner to specialised roro container carrier, the company established a
hub at Genoa’s Calata Tripoli in 1969. Operations
were centred in La Spezia from March 1977 until
November 1996 when the company returned to the
Nino Ronco Terminal in Genoa. The move first to La
Spezia and then back to Genoa was the result of a
combination of factors, not least of which was the
requirement for more space to cope with increasing
traffic volumes.
In January 2013 the company changed its business
name to GRUPPO MESSINA SPA, whilst LINEA
MESSINA S.p.A. adopted its current denomination,
IGNAZIO MESSINA & C. S.p.A.(IM). GRUPPO
MESSINA was appointed holding company of
the shipping arm IM, and terminal operating
management company of Terminal Nino Ronco
Messina has invested substantially to improve
the 167,000 sqm concession at the Nino Ronco
location, in 2004 extended to Molo Canepa, a
portion of Calata Bengasi and the areas lying
behind for a total area of 253,000 sqm, furnishing
the terminal with equipment and infrastructure
needed for rapid and efficient cargo handling,

including warehousing and consolidation (a
covered area extending over 11,000 sqm).
The terminal is fully equipped to handle containers,
general and rolling cargo, and heavy lift and project
cargo. There are berthing facilities for 5/6 vessels, easy
and exclusive road-rail connections, full dedicated
Customs attendance, a 6,500-sqm multi-storey car
park and a marine and vehicle workshop providing
year round technical assistance and maintenance for
landside handling equipment and vessels alike.
Messina’s Nino Ronco facility was the first terminal
in Europe to obtain RINA 18.001 –OHSAS
Occupational Health & Safety Management System
GRUPPO MESSINA currently employs 78 staff in the
head office and 182 at the marine port terminal;
whilst IGNAZIO MESSINA counts 115 employees
in the head office and 60 employees and shipyard
workers at the terminal. There are also a further
240 crew members at sea.
An operation of this magnitude obviously requires
a high degree of organisation and a sophisticated
EDI system links the global network and manages
all day-to-day aspects of the business from
administrative functions, such as issuing manifests
and bills of lading, to terminal movements and
load planning. Notwithstanding the global world
(firstly issued in 2001), as well as ISO 14001:2004

issued in 2004) and ISPS Code security approval.
The growth in the company’s activities makes
space a major priority, and the area between Ponte

Messina’s current expansion plans.
economic crisis, in 2013 a total of 187,000 TEU
were handled at the terminal in Genoa, together
with 115,000 linear metres of rolling cargo and
some 9,000 t. of general cargo. 1,100 block trains
were operated in 2013 and around 46,000 truck
movements were recorded. Approximately 45%
of inland container traffic is moved by rail through
gruppo messina spa
a network of inland cargo hubs at Milan, Brescia,
Vicenza, Arezzo, Jesi and Dinazzano.
The Messina Group, which operates one of the
largest ro-ro container fleets in the world, has
branch offices in Italy (Modena and Naples), Europe
(London, Marseilles, Barcelona and Valencia).
Fourteen branch offices throughout Africa reflect
the importance which the company attaches to
maintaining a direct presence in its key markets.
37 countries are served by the group’s own fleet
throughout North, South, East and West Africa,
the Mediterranean, Red Sea, Middle East and the
Indian subcontinent.
Efforts are also being concentrated on
consolidating existing markets and providing an
improved level of service not only to Africa but also
the Middle East, with further investments in ro-ro/
container as well as full-container fleet expansion,
planned to increase frequency and reduce transit
times. To this aim, and in countertendency with
the worldwide shipping downturn, in December
2009 Ignazio Messina & C. S.p.A. placed an order
with South Korean shipyard Daewoo Shipbuilding
& Marine Engineering Co, to build four highly
technologically advanced ro-ro/container vessels,
Container Handling
with a maximum capacity of 3,000 TEUS or 6,030
linear metres of heavy lift cargo, which entered into
service between October 2011 and February 2013.
An additional four new ro-ro/container vessels,
with the same technological features, are under
construction at the South Korean shipyard STX
Offshore & Shipbuliding.

STAZIONI MARITTIME SPA
PASSENGER OPERATIONS
Stazioni Marittime SpA is the company which
has been planning, constructing and operating
passenger terminals in the Port of Genoa
since 1989. The group manages five terminals:
two purpose-built terminals at Ponte dei
Mille and Ponte Andrea Doria are dedicated
to cruise traffic, whilst three terminals, at
Calata Chiappella, Ponte Caracciolo and Ponte
Colombo, are primarily used for ferry traffic. In
total, the sites cover approximately 290,000
sqm of surface area, offering 12 berths, along
3000 metres of quays.
Since the early nineties, Stazioni Marittime,
together with the Port Authority of Genoa,
have invested over €122 m on radically redesigning the dock area, the internal road
network, renovating existing buildings and

Access to the terminals is easy as the
passenger port is located just 5 km from Genoa
International Airport and 200 m from the railway
station, whilst Genoa’s harbour is directly
linked to the European motorway network. In
addition, ample car and bus parking areas are
available, adjacent to Ponte dei Mille and Ponte
Andrea Doria Cruise Terminals, to cater for the
operational and logistic requirements of the
latest generation of cruise vessels.
All Stazioni Marittime managed terminals
are at the forefront of safety and security
passenger operations
measures, adhering to all recent strict IMO
and EU regulations. The company has made
sizable investments in camera and surveillance
equipment, both inside and outside the
terminals, to ensure 24-hour security monitoring
of all areas. During peak cruise and ferry traffic
times, extra security guards are employed for
access control, surveillance and X-ray controls.
It is important to note that Stazioni Marittime
was the first in Italy to draw up a Port Facility
Security Plan approved by the Coast Guard
Authority, offering highest security levels for ship

CRUISES
Ponte dei Mille Cruise Terminal
Since medieval times Genoa has been a
passenger port, first for pilgrims on their way
to the Holy Land, then in the mid-19th century
for large ships sailing the Mediterranean and
transoceanic routes. To cope with the rising
tide of emigration, a passenger building was
constructed at the turn of the 20th century, whilst
in 1930 the Ponte dei Mille Maritime Station,
with its monumental facade, was inaugurated.
In the early 1990s Stazioni Marittime and the
Port Authority of Genoa fully restored the historic
building and brought it back to life as a modern
state-of-the-art cruise terminal.
The terminal building covers over 18,000 sqm
on three levels connected by escalators and lifts.
The facility meets the highest level of operational
standards and is equipped with a wide range of
services and technology to guarantee maximum
safety and comfort. The large embarkation
areas are equipped with moving walkways
that connect to the ships. Further refurbishment
was undertaken in 2001, to accommodate
government meetings during the G8 Summit,
which included an extension of approximately
3,500 sqm and the restoration of the historic first
and second class passenger embarkation halls,
now used for check-in and embarking operations
and as waiting areas and transit rooms.
The stylish and exclusive entrance and
embarkation halls have provided the backdrop to
many cruise ship inaugurations.
The terminal can accommodate two large cruise
vessels, plus one of smaller size,
and up to 10,000 passengers a day. Stazioni
Marittime features a 340 m-quay capable of
handling the latest generation of post-Panamax
cruiseships, and ranks as the longest
cruise berth in Europe.
Ponte Andrea Doria Cruise Terminal
The art deco Ponte Andrea Doria Cruise Terminal
was originally inaugurated in 1933, but in recent
years it has undergone substantial restoration
with the renewal of all fixtures, services and
passenger areas, plus the widening and
lengthening of both quays and related jetties.
The terminal features two berths of about 300
metres in length equipped with mobile gangways.

passenger operations
The building features passenger halls on different
levels, dedicated respectively to embarking and
disembarking passengers, and covers a
total surface area of 11,000 sqm. Maximum
comfort is offered in the ample departure halls
which house an extensive array of passenger
amenities.
In addition, both Andrea Doria and Ponte dei
Mille cruise terminals follow the design principles
of a modern airport building, consequently airport
style check-in procedures keep passenger waiting
to a minimum.
Luggage is checked in upon arrival at the terminal
and then delivered to cabins having been cleared
by customs and police.
Similarly, disembarking passengers receive their
luggage, after police checks, just before they
leave the terminal.

passenger operations
Genoa is an important base port for cruise
ships sailing to destinations in the west and
east Mediterranean, to North Africa and the
Atlantic islands. It is also a port of departure for
repositioning cruises to and from the Americas
and Northern Europe. Approximately 300 vessels
departed from the cruise terminals in 2013,
and passenger throughput crossed the 1 million
threshold. Stazioni Marittime has also successfully
capitalised upon the growth in winter cruises.
It is important to note that MSC, the world’s
fastest growing cruise line, has chosen to focus
on Genoa, and the company now homeports at
its cruise facilities. In fact, MSC accounts for a
significant part of Genoa’s cruise passengers. The
group moved 900,000 passengers though Genoa
in 2013.

To cater to the differing requirements of nonSchengen traffic, two areas have been created
specifically for traffic to North Africa which has
risen rapidly in recent years.
Ponte Colombo Terminal
Located in the heart of the ferry area,
Ponte Colombo Terminal was restructured
from an existing four-storey building which dates
from 1920.
The terminal, with three berths, is primarily used
for ferry traffic to North Africa. It covers an area
of 6,000 sqm with a basement floor for parking.
From the terminal level there is a pedestrian link
passenger operations
to the boarding and disembarkation
area which runs parallel to the new Ponte
Colombo quay, redesigned to handle the latest
generation of ships. Passengers can board
the ship directly by escalator from the
embarkation terrace.
Ponte Caracciolo Terminal
Located in the western part of the passenger port,
the terminal was designed to cater mainly for the
changing operating and security requirements of
non-Schengen ferry traffic. However, like the other
Stazioni Marittime managed terminals, it can also
handle cruise ships if required. The passenger

Designed to manage heavy flows of traffic
in the summer months, it offers a total
of 10 berths equipped to accommodate ferries
and 19 check-in gates that can control
and direct vehicles; speeding up access time to the
embarkation areas.
In addition, the ferry terminal building is linked to
Ponte Colombo and Ponte Caracciolo by a flyover
walkway which separates the pedestrian flows from
the cars and trucks at quay level.

There is an approximately 80,000 sqm area
dedicated to pre-boarding parking and a
separate 100,000 sqm truck park.
Trucks use routes separated from passenger
traffic to ensue their safety.
Constant traffic monitoring includes variable
messaging on electronic display signs.
The terminal building consists of several
levels covering a total surface area
of 12,000 sqm.
In addition to ticket offices and departure
lounges, passenger amenities comprise a

CRISTOFORO COLOMBO
AIRPORT
From a passenger’s point of view the most
striking feature of Genoa’s Cristoforo Colombo
Airport is the short distance to the city centre;
from a cargo perspective the most significant
factor is the airport’s close proximity to the
port. There is an obvious synergy between
the two facilities and it is expected that this
will be strengthened over the coming years
as measures are put into place to develop
the airport’s intermodal potential. The airport
already offers direct motorway access, whilst
a study is underway, thanks to the support of
TEN-T European transport agency, to provide
a direct airport passenger link to the nearby
railway.
Located on the western side of the south
apron, the cargo terminal is divided into 3,000
PASSENGER OPERATIONS
sqm of warehousing facilities and a single level
annex of over 3,000 sqm dedicated to airport
management, customs and forwarding agents
offices. The terminal offers the full range of
services to/from domestic and international
locations, including refrigerator cells, a live
animal unit, radioactive material boxes and
storage areas.
Cristoforo Colombo Airport can handle 1,500
passengers/hour and can accommodate the
most modern aircraft on its 3,065-metre
(10,055 feet) runway. It has links to major
European destinations which, with the cruise
terminal a mere 6 km away, is an important
consideration for cruise operators. The baggage
control and transport system have already been
improved in order to speed up operations and
cristoforo colombo

facilitate passengers’ movement between port
and airport. The recently upgraded passenger
terminal is arranged on four levels,
with arrivals on the ground floor, departures
on the first, airline offices on level two and
administrative offices on the third floor. A
special dedicated area has been built alongside
the terminal at the beginning of 2014 to
accommodate the flow of cruise passengers
subsequent to the completion of security
checks.
An extension project of the airport – an
increase from 15,000 to 23,000 square meters
of internal surface area - has already been
approved, and the construction works are
expected to start by 2015.
Other facilities include the ticket office, a VIP
lounge, an exclusive lounge for MSC cruise
passengers and one dedicated to Costa
Crociere, free WiFi, a restaurant on the first
floor, 4 bars, a bank, shops, a Fly Save Bag
point, car rental and tourist information office.
Backing these services, there is a 900-vehicle
car park located in front of the passenger
terminal (divided between medium and shortstay parking), and a car park dedicated to
long-stay parking at reduced rates. In addition,
the airport offers on-terminal bus services
(both to mainline railway stations in the city
centre and to the nearby Airport Station) and
taxi ranks.
