Good evening and welcome to Leigh Sports Village for tonight’s
game against Dewsbury Rams.
A few weeks ago when Leigh took on Dewsbury at the Tetley Stadium,
Leigh boss Paul Rowley commented it had been one of the toughest
games of the season. Despite their current position outside the playoff places, the Centurions are set for another strong challenge from
the Rams.

“So this season’s romance with the Northern Rail Cup is over. We
went to Featherstone on a cold, rainy night and played the best in
the Championship. We got beaten but on reflection, so far this
season, we have reached the quarter final of the Challenge Cup, the
semi-final of the Northern Rail Cup, we are fourth in the league and
we are still in business; we have signed two thirds of next season’s
squad; Paul will have his first full pre-season training, with a squad
that he wants and a bunch of blokes who want to be at Leigh. Twelve
months ago we were sliding into the abyss and where we are now is
remarkable.
“We are in the process of a massive rebuilding job. The vast majority of
Leigh fans understand where we are and continue to give us their unfettered
support. For those that were able to make it to Featherstone, thank you
very much.
“We will be having another Fans’ Forum on Wednesday, 15th August where
we will be explaining our current financial situation and reports from the
various sections that make up our great Club.

Wigan Borough Healthy Stadia
and Sports Club Netork
Over 60 delegates, including many from professional and
amateur sports clubs attended the Wigan Borough Healthy Stadia
and Sports Club Network Conference on 21st June at Leigh Sports
Village. The event was chaired by Trevor Barton MBE, th CEO of
Leigh Centurions, which is a founder member alongside LSVco.
The event focused on summarising the health profile of Wigan Borough
and identified how the new Healthy Stadia and Sports Club Network
can offer sports clubs and stadia the opportunity to recognise their
important contributions to the health of their communities.
Key presentations were delivered by Jane Pilkington, Associate Director
of Public Health for NHS Ashton, Leigh and Wigan PCT, Tom Flower,
Head of Community at Wigan Athletic Community Trust and Jeff Gorse
on behalf of Leigh Miners Rangers ARLFC.

Dr Kate Ardern Executive Director of Public Health for the Borough of
Wigan said: ‘This innovative programme has the potential to have a
very positive impact on the health and wellbeing of the whole
Borough, and it is great to see taking a national lead’.
This is the first Borough wide Healthy Stadia and Sports Club Network
to be set up and launched in the UK. This initiative has been
commissioned by and is funded by the local NHS in order to work with
sports stadia and clubs across the Wigan borough to support them in
becoming healthier environments for their fans, staff, visitors and the
local communities they serve.
This 3 year project will work with clubs and stadia and act as a full
time support mechanism, giving advice and signposting to suitable
services that may enhance existing stadia/club based delivery. The
project lead will assist the effective partnership developments with
external organisations such as the NHS and local authority.
With a population of about 300,000 across an area of 77 square miles,
Wigan is one of the largest metropolitan districts in England, and has
a large number of sporting clubs, amateur and professional.
Trevor said, "The idea is to advise clubs what they can do in providing
alternative menu choices which invariably are not only more healthy
to eat but give a better financial return. Our Vice President and Shadow
Minister of Health, Andy Burnham MP is right behind the scheme as
well"

Leigh Centurions were saddened to learn that former player
Tony Byrne passed away recently.
Tony played at hooker and was a fan favourite in the early
1970s. Our thoughts and condolences are with Tony's family
at this sad time.

Following the defeats to Featherstone and Batley, Dave Parkinson caught
up with Centurions Head Coach Paul Rowley.
Looking back at the Batley encounter that was one that saw the team
battle through but lose 42-20 and I think it was more how the game
ended that was the disappointing thing.
"Batley got a couple of silly tries from our mistakes right at the death where
we'd probably clicked off and gone in for a shower at that point. The game
could have been very different. We had one dragged back for a forward pass.
There were some dubious refereeing decisions in there I thought but there was
a lack of finishing from us. If we had finished more clinically, we could have
gone in front - Gardner putting a ball down that he wouldn't normally drop. We
went there and played very individually, it was not our usual team effort. People
were trying to solve things on their own but that's what you get with a lack of
preparation and continuity from within your team. We always said we'd come
up on a tough patch and this is it now."

"If you are going to assess, we've reached a semi-final. In touching distance of
top four of the league with a game in hand. We got further than anyone else
at our level in the Challenge Cup, reaching a quarter final. Overall at this point
of the season, I'm proud of the boys, proud of their efforts. We've been bashed
up all week. People put their hand up to play who shouldn't have done. They
have done remarkably well to do what they've done and they've done it through
sticking together and sticking tight as a unit. We'll remain tight and close, and
work harder to put this blip we are having at the moment behind us and put it
right. Hopefully along the way we'll get some fit bodies in as well. We are doing
it tough, but we have lost to good teams in the last couple of weeks but we did
have better in us. I'm disappointed on one hand. I hate losing, but I'm pretty
proud of the boys for reaching a semi-final. Credit is paid to Featherstone
Rovers. They control the ruck area remarkably well, home advantage is a real
home advantage when you come to Featherstone with regards 50-50s. We
average five penalties a game generally but in the last two we've gone twelve
and thirteen which tells a story as well really."
Arguably you have played on two of the biggest venues for home
advantage over the last couple of weeks.
"They are traditional rugby league grounds aren't they and the invention of
Super League tries to eradicate these sort of grounds but we have one of those.
We love our North Stand. That gives us our boost. It's an imposing place is
Featherstone. There are some things I'd have liked to go our way that didn't and
even if we'd got every 50-50 and got a bit more rub of the green we were still
second best.

What were your thoughts on the performance there?
"Some boys put in a good performance, others didn't do as well as they could
but I think we saw what happens with the recent Wigan and Warrington results
what taking two or three out of your side can do, we were seven or eight down
that weekend! There is always 100% effort from the lads but you can't take that
many out and hope it doesn't affect you. It was clearly very important for
Batley. You could see it in the way they celebrated when scoring what it meant

Switching to Featherstone, you expected tough, you got tough!
"They were willing to roll their sleeves up. I don't think we were too willing at
times. When we played square and played tight and how we normally play we
scored some nice tries and made it look relatively easy but you can't go through
a game scoring tries without having to beat a tackle or break a tackle and
likewise when you are defending, when you make contact you have got to stick
and be aggressive in what you do. We were a little bit down on that, but we

"And they'll do it again. If we'd only had five players at Featherstone, we'd have
been there. There is no shortage of character or spirit in this camp, we are the
only team that has not had a weeks rest due to the French, due to the success
that we've had, maybe we'd have been better not getting through to the
Northern Rail and having recovery time instead, so our success has very much
damaged us in this period now, but we do treat every week as it comes and
want to win every game.

The current situation at Bradford should act as a catalyst for changes in
rugby league, but don't be surprised if it doesn't.
Fortunately, in a way, news of the Bulls' financial plight has distracted from the
disappointing on-field product which appears to be having every ounce of
passion filtered from it.
With the number of meaningless games increasing, the top teams have now
even turned to virtually throwing games to ensure their players are fresh for the
crucial end of season run-in, no doubt inspired by Leeds' run to Super League
glory from fifth place last season, despite a dismal 2011 prior to that.
Taking nothing away from Salford, Warrington fielded an under-strength outfit
in their recent defeat at the City of Salford Stadium, but they knew they could
get away with it, given that closest rivals Wigan had done it a few months
previous in an away defeat at Widnes.
Of course, Tony Smith's decision to do that was justified slightly by the fact
Wigan also lost on the same night, but spare a thought for the fans who
travelled to see their team.
While viewing figures on SKY Sports may be on the up, people are being turned
off by the on-field product, and crowds, especially away support, seem to be
on a downward spiral.
Even supporters of top teams are getting turned off by the one-sided nature of
a number of their games - I spoke to a couple of Warrington "fans" prior to the
season and they said they had decided just to pick and choose their games this
season rather than by a season ticket, because they were sick of "non-events"
against teams from the lower part of the league.
If the passion is being seeped from Super League, imagine what's happening in

Since my last article about the clubs under-18s, the team have
come up with thumping back to back wins over Hunslet and
Oldham. Here is the first report.
the Championship. The passionate few at the likes of Featherstone face an
uneviable box-ticking exercise that in itself requires funding, something that is
difficult to come across under the glass ceiling of the top end of that league.
Widnes made it through courtesy of a multi-million pound owner, but even
Steve O'Connor has had to plug a £400,000 shortfall in the Vikings' finances in
their first season back in Super League, and it's hard to imagine the likes of
Featherstone, Halifax and Leigh could afford such luxury as that. That's not even
taking in to consideration the funds O'Connor will have pumped in to make
the Vikings the obvious choice for a licence last March.
Rugby league is built on the passion and enthusiasm of its fans and family after all, it's been a battle at times in many quarters to gain respect, and even
today, national exposure remains inconsistent.
But even the die-hards are running out of patience, and going to games feels
more like habit to some these days.
If the die-hards can't be turned on, then what hope of increasing the rugby
league family?
We wait to see what happens with Bradford, but booting them out of Super
League will solve no problems. While it might be the right thing to do for the
integrity of the competition, it does little to solve the long term issues that we
seem to be heading in to.
What can be done to stop it from happening again? And what can be done to
re-ignite the sport of rugby league and help build some domestic momentum
ahead of next year's World Cup?
Here's hoping there's a day soon where the rugby league on the pitch can
do the talking.

Two tries in the first seven minutes set Leigh away to a great start
but after being pegged back at halftime, it took a tremendous
second forty minutes to set up this eventual win.
Leigh got the scoreboard moving after just three minutes when the
impressive Danny Horridge dabbed ahead, collected and went over the
line. Halfback partner Josh Ward added the first of nine goals and the
Centurions were soon up at the right end of the ground following a
break in midfield by debutant Tom Holland. Quick linking left then saw
fellow debutant Tom Breheny put Matty Charnock over for the first of
his two tries.
Hunslet responded and claimed a converted try from dummy half, while
Tyler Spence was tackled into touch. Leigh claimed their third try after
fifteen minutes when Horridge scored his second before a mistake from
Danny Peet saw Hunslet regather and claim a try that was expertly
converted from the right touchline.
Leigh did finish the half stronger but no further points followed
Breheny's 28th minute score after Ward sent him over.
The Centurions quckly set about making this their game and three tries
in the opening eight minutes of the second half moved their score from

Carrying on the good work of their previous game against Hunslet,
Leigh turned in a sparkling attacking performance to score 13 tries
and a handsome victory.
Played on a sunny afternoon at Oldham's Whitebank Stadium, the pitch
was still pretty boggy in places due to the rain from the days before
and Leigh had to contend with going up the pronounced slope of the
ground in the first half. It would be fair to say, you couldn't tell as other
than two or three defensive lapses, the visitors dominated.
Just 90 seconds into the contest Leigh took the lead when smart work
from dummy half saw big Luke Barrett plough his way between the
posts for Josh Ward to hit the first of twelve successful goals. An
attractive attack that went half the width of the field from left to right
resulted in a try for Mitchell Cox and in the set after the restart Ward,
Jordan Houghton and Cox all created space for Tyler Spence to claim the
first of his hat-trick.
Ward was a growing influence on the game and when a poor clearance
kick on the last tackle from Oldham went up in the air and across field,
the quick thinking halfback caught and broke clear to touch down and
convert for a 22-0 advantage after 22 minutes. Oldham then scored
their only try of the first half and converted before Ward turned creator
with a clever crossfield kick that saw Spence go in for his second.
Replacement prop Johnny Turner soon got in on the try-scoring from
close range and just before halftime prop Brad Roden ran into dummy
half and in a move reminiscent of coach John Duffy, moved the ball
right at pace for Cox to line his winger up for his third try, Ward
converting superbly from the touchline to secure a 40-6 half-time score.
Any hopes the young Centurions had of restricting their hosts were

a competitive 22-12 to 38-12.
Ward was at the centre of things. First he kicked right for Mitchell Cox
to leap ahead of two players to touch down, then as Hunslet looked to
run down the ground themselves, he intercepted and claimed a 60
metre try of his own before appearing on the shoulder of Luke Barrett
to claim his second try in the 48th minute.
Hunslet got over the Leigh line for a third time but a knock on denied
them and Barrett turned from try maker to try scorer as he took a pass
from Sean Kenny to rumble over under the posts. This sparked another
glut of tries as Charnock added a powerful finish from forty metres
before Ward chipped to the posts for Barrett to touch down and the
irripressible scrum half quickly turned the ball inside for Jordan
Houghton to show good pace to get to the line for the Centurions
eleventh try of the night to which Ward added the conversion and his
26th point.

shattered after just four minutes when Andy Ball found his way through
from dummy half for a converted try and he was desperately unlucky
to knock on over the line a couple of minutes later. Leigh soon got on
the front foot again and blew Oldham away with six tries in sixteen
minutes.
Ward created the first of these as he kicked in behind the line for Callum
O'Connor to pounce and the scrum half was heavily involved as Turner
charged over for his second try. High speed Leigh seemed to attack from
anywhere and when Oldham lost the ball forty metres from the Leigh
line the ball moved right from a scrum and Houghton outpaced three
players down the touchline to claim a fine try.
Everything was heading Leigh's way and a Ward 40/20 kick was
rewarded as the scrum half then intelligently ran play right to get Tom
Breheny over by the posts. Still there was no answer to Ward as he and
Campbell ran the play and halfback partner Matt Pendlebury sailed over
the line before a good run from Mark Jones saw him score on his first
appearance for the 18s this year.
With 15 minutes remaining and Ward hoisting his 28th point of the
game, Oldham must have been fearing the worse but they battled

A few weeks ago when Leigh took on
Dewsbury at the Tetley Stadium, Leigh boss
Paul Rowley commented it had been one of
the toughest games of the season. Despite
their current position outside the play-off
places, the Centurions are set for another
strong challenge from the Rams.
You only have to go back two seasons for one of
the most one sided victories by an opposition
team over Leigh at the LSV when Dewsbury won
30-6 and a couple of members of that team still
remain on the books.
Warren Jowitt has assembled a competitive
squad with some big players and the recent
captures of Leeds duo Brad Singleton and Liam
Hood have complimented the squad. Another
player to have joined the Rams ranks in recent
times is Daley Williams. The former Salford and
Keighley threequarter had been playing at Batley
but opted to move down the road after seeing
his first team chances limited. Daley is a solid
strike centre who will undoubtedly be looking
to ask some questions of Leigh's fringes tonight.
Last season I did a piece for our Northern Rail
Semi-Final programme with Austin Buchanan
and he continues to remain one of the better
wingers outside of Super League and another
that if given space can score a try.
For me, the jewel in the current Dewsbury
backline is fullback James Craven. He is one of
the survivors I mentioned from that league
success Dewsbury had here two years ago ,
when he was just making his way in the
professional ranks. Quick in thought and feet,
James is a dangerous attacker and was certainly
the "go to" man in the game at the Tetleys
stadium a couple of months ago.
At half-back long serving Pat Walker knows how
to get the Rams around the field and has one of
the better kicking games in the Championship.
In addition to being the regular goal-kicker for
the Rams he has also chipped in with some
important tries but is more reknowned as a
creator. Joining him this season is Scott Spaven
who enjoyed a great season in 2011 with
Doncaster, notching 209 points (10T 84G 1Dg) in
27 games.
The Rams forward pack boasts Steve Crossley,
once of Bradford Bulls and Rob Spicer who has
also gained considerable Super League
experience (over 40 games) with Wakefield
between 2003-2005. Leading the way this
season has been Dwayne Barker who returned
to the professional game this season having
represented the likes of Leeds, London and Hull
Kingston Rovers in the past, while the inclusion
of former Batley and Bradford hooker George
Flanagan also provides a lot of guidance and
impetus.

Dewsbury won 32-24 at York in their last game,
ending a 5 game winless sequence.
The hosts put up a massive fight but Dewsbury led 100 at half-time thanks to tries from Ryan Esders and
James Craven.
Once more the hosts threatened and grabbed three
tries to take the lead but the Rams came home with a
wet sail, Esders and Craven both claiming their second
tries while Scott Spaven and Ayden Faal also touched
down for Pat Walker to strike four goals.

Good evening everyone and welcome to the LSV, as always
a very special warm welcome to our new supporters this
evening we really do hope that you enjoy this evening’s
match!
Hopefully all our supporters have been able to review our new
website, we appreciate that there are still many updates to complete
and hopefully by the end of July the site will be fully 100% functional
– it has always been our intention to introduce a new website which
competed with the Super League clubs and to improve our
engagement with our supporters, this takes time and with a zero
development budget to achieve that aim, we are actually very pleased
with progress and all is on track.

I have spoken and written many words on this campaign during
the past few weeks, as have done my fellow board colleagues.
Thank you very much for the enormous communications of
encouragement they have been warmly received and pushes us on
to take the campaign to its next target.
I was invited to a recent Leythcast interview (You can get the link through
our website) and I mentioned how important it was for our supporters
to support the We Beleighve campaign in where possible in a sales
capacity, do not worry there are no courses to attend or forms to
complete, we just need our supporters to spread the word to friends,
neighbours and colleagues that Leigh Centurions is trying to build
something great for the club, the community and our kids for the future
and to simply experiment and to check out the atmosphere, the game,
the team, some will walk away and others like ourselves will fall in love
with the Club and the game and keep coming back for more!

funds for the Junior Centurions.
They are assembling on the pitch before today's match when they will be

Despite another brave effort from Paul Rowley’s busted Leigh Centurions, they found
Featherstone Rovers too hot to hold over eighty minutes and the current holders of the
Northern Rail Cup saw their defence ended by the in form Yorkshire men.
Playing their second game in four days proved too much for the Centurions and questions must now
be asked about the format of this competition.
The hosts claimed ten tries in all with centre Sam Smeaton helping himself to four of their tally. It was
Leigh who dominated the opening ten minutes in both territory and possession, but once Featherstone
found their feet, they were irresistible for most of the first half.
Leigh started superbly forcing a drop out almost directly from kick off and their aggressive defence
caught Rovers on the back foot but once a few penalties started to go in favour of the home side, they
made the most of their chances.
Dual contract wing Jack Briscoe scored the first after 14 minutes and Sam Smeaton added two quick
fire tries to build a 14-0 advantage after 21 minutes. Leigh came close when Steve Maden attacked
down the right but his chip over was too far for any team mate to latch onto.
Rovers replied with another try from Tom Saxton but Leigh came back strongly with Gregg McNally
desperately unlucky not to claim a score of his own.
Eventually, Leigh did breach the Rovers defence when Rob Parker smuggled the ball away for Kevin
Henderson to squeeze over but just before half time, Rovers took the ball to their right and Smeaton
got over for his hat-trick to ensure a 24-4 advantage at the break. Leigh made a superb start to the
second half when John Duffy sent Martyn Ridyard through a hole and he in turn found Sam Hopkins
for the young forward to claim his 8th try of the season. Rovers responded quicky when Smeaton
found his way through and he was quickly followed by Saxton.
The Centurions replied gamely as McNally seared through on the right after a quick ball from Duffy
and Stuart Littler supported for Ridyard to add his second conversion but Rovers scored three further
times through Stuart Dickens, Finn and Briscoe, for Finn to complete his eighteen point tally with his
seventh goal.
BATLEY BULLDOGS 42 LEIGH CENTURIONS 20
Despite a superb opening from a patched up Leigh Centurions it was Batley Bulldogs who
made home advantage count to take third spot in the Co-operative Championship outright
with seven tries and a 42-20 victory.
It could have been so different had Leigh not had a try wiped off with eleven minutes remaining
when Matt Gardner was hauled back for a forward pass as he flew in at the corner. The centre then
saw another try go beyond him when he couldn't take a difficult pass. At that stage, Leigh trailed just
20-30 and looked a good bet to claim points as they attacked down the infamous Mount Pleasant
slope only for the Bulldogs to score two tries in the last five minutes to add a lopsided look to the
score
Leigh's endeavour saw them take an 8-0 advantage as they dominated the opening twenty minutes
before four tries in the final twelve minutes of the half saw the Bulldogs grab a foothold as they
used the considerable advantage of the slope to drive Leigh back and take a 24-8 lead into the break.
Leigh scored a well worked opener after only nine minutes as Rob Parker flicked the ball out and
Martyn Ridyard, Ryan Brierley and Gregg McNally spread play right for Stuart Littler to send Adam
Clay in at the corner. Ridyard missed the kick and Leigh held their nerve and their line and denied the
Bulldogs two scoring opportunities before striking again when Bob Beswick kept the ball alive and
Ridyard sent Brierley haring through a gap to claim his 19th try of the season. Both teams looked well
matched before the Bulldogs brought on Alex Walmsley and Keegan Hirst and their extra size helped
Batley to good field position, allowing halfbacks Ben Black and Gareth Moore to shine.
In contrast, the Centurions lost the influential Beswick to injury and their bench could not regain
momentum despite best efforts. Paul Mennell, Adam Scott and two tries from the lively Gareth Potts,
all goaled by Moore set the half-time position of 8-24 and the Bulldogs then had the early spoils in
the second half with Moore booting a penalty.
To their credit, Leigh fought back and a humdinger of a contest developed as Andy Thornley, making
his second debut for the club, crossed for a try before Dean McGilvray snapped up a deflected pass
to ground another score. Both were goaled by Ridyard but just as Leigh looked set to take control an
uncharacteristic error from Stuart Littler was snapped up by Moore and the Bulldogs halfback ran
thirty metres to make it 30-20.
Gardner saw his two chances go begging and the Bulldogs finished the game as Mark Applegarth
supported to go under the sticks before Gregg McNally and McGilvray crucially delayed on a Moore
kick and Jon Campbell ran through for Moore to boot his seventh goal to condemn the Centurions
to defeat.

Who can stop Rovers?

FEATHERSTONE Rovers chalked up a ninth straight win in
reaching the Northern Rail Cup final last week – are they
marching towards a clean sweep of trophies this year?
Daryl Powell’s side have already claimed the title of European
champions with their win over Pia Donkeys in the Anglo-French
Challenge, and are now top of the Championship and in the NRC final.
Rovers have been the best team at this level for the last two and a
half years now, and had it not been for Halifax’s brilliant, unforgettable
comeback in the 2010 Grand Final, they could have been back-to-back
champions.
Earlier in the year people questioned if they were losing their cloak of
invincibility when they suffered 60-point home defeats to both Fax
and Sheffield.
But they came amidst Featherstone’s brilliant Challenge Cup run, which
saw them beat local rivals and then push Wigan Warriors close in two
thrilling ties.
Since that home Halifax defeat they have won nine games in a row,
including exacting revenge on Karl Harrison’s side in the return fixture
on Premier Sports recently.
Another television appearance saw them brush aside an admittedly
weakened Leigh Centurions in the NRC semi-final last week – so who
can halt this run now? Of course, Fax, Leigh, Batley and Sheffield will
all fancy their chances of toppling Featherstone on the day, but Rovers
do look a cut above at the moment.
They have tightened the defence that shipped all those points at home
to Halifax and the Eagles – in fact if you take those two matches out

everyone else should, in the words of Stevo, put their cues on the rack.
But Rovers are the Championship benchmark again at present – and it’s
up to everyone else to start closing the gap again and preventing a
clean sweep of silverware come the end of the campaign.

Every year Rugby League and probably
every sport for that matter has a ‘silly
season’. Right now seems to be that time
for Rugby League.
‘Silly season’ is just an expression, but it seems
fitting because it’s really difficult to put your
finger on exactly what it’s supposed to mean
as it means a lot of things. Let’s take a good
look at what might be behind this expression.
Some teams have consolidated their play-off
hopes while others chase frantically for the
opportunity, and further time is running out.
Desperation pursues one, while complacency
might dog the other. Clubs begin to realise
after 18 odd rounds where exactly they are
positioned both on and off the pitch and
those stats very rarely lie.
Gate numbers are down, results are
inconsistent, disharmony around the club is
gaining traction, unrest seeps in and rebellion
lingers. Ok, this might seem a little over
stated, but you get my drift. Additional to all
this is the RFL regulation round, mid-season
transfers, the player’s managers’ freedom to
speak to other clubs, not to mention the odd
coach declaring their intention to jump ship.
All this stuff is nothing new, just the same way
you will have those who stand at the top of
the table and those fighting to avoid coming
last, however it has always stood out to me
how easily we justify it, or even worse, ignore
it. For me, the next few weeks will tell me
who has the right ingredients to be there at
the final dance. Most of it comes down to
discipline and not the sort that simply says
‘don’t give away penalties’ or ‘the team who
can hang on to the ball the most wins’.
I’m talking about the element that asks bigger
questions of ones’ mental capabilities. Like –
“what team is going to hang onto a game at
the 60th minute and which one’s going to
fold?”
The teams who can hold on to the toughness
of a season even when it appears their
position on the table is safe or not, but they
go about their business with commitment,
precision and selflessness - that’s the
discipline I’m referring to.
It’s not so easy to place stats on this type of
effort like it is to count the number of drop
balls a team made in a game, but it’s the type
of growth that will set a team apart. It’s the
stuff that regardless of the result, everyone
walks away feeling in some way stronger, and
no matter what, it will give you what you
were looking for in the long run.
And if you’re a team who can’t make
playoffs there’s still every reason to build
for the future by getting better at this
tough stage of the season. “It’s not always
the fastest or the strongest that wins but
sometimes the one who says I can!”

The Legacy Event Series differentiates itself from other events
as we do not charge charities a ‘partner fee’ in addition to
participant entry fees. This means that funds raised go directly
to the charity, club or voluntary group.
The Legacy Event Series is all about allowing the public to leave a

Following the deluge last Friday it
seemed doubtful that Easts first team
game at Saddleworth would go ahead
but a morning inspection passed the
pitch as playable although line markings had to be redone. Danny
Kilshaw opened the scoring with just three minutes elapsed,
Lyndon Robertson fresh from BARLA Great Britain Cougars
BARLA Jubilee Tour of Jamaica crashed through for two tries
before the twenty minute mark. Kerrod Selmes converting all
three for an 18 nil lead. Saddleworth responded on the half hour
with a Dave Stanley try, converted by Kiel Lancashire. H.T.
Saddleworth 6 East 18.
Two minutes after the break Ben Wood crossed for the home side,
the kick closing the gap at 12-18. A try saving intercept by Mark Kay on
50mins caught the home team on the back foot, Dainty crossing to
increase the lead to 12-24. Again Saddleworth replied through Steve
Kiss, Lancashire adding the kick. Back came East with two tries from
Alex Robson and one from Selmes who converted all attempts for 7/7.
to make it 18-42 with ten to go. East slackened off in the last five
minutes allowing Langham and Holden in for converted tries but the
result was never in doubt. East winning 30-42.

The initiative began in the mid-2000s and initially spread at the upper
echelons of sport across Europe before really taking root in the Uk
and particularly the north west through the work of HM Partnerships
and the buy-in from Liverpool FC. However Wigan Borough is unique
in that a significant number of amateur clubs have been forwardthinking enough to want to play their part, prompting the launch of a
programme which will drive the whole Healthy Stadia / Clubs initiative
forward in the borough over the coming years.
One key element of the programme is that it isn't about doing away
with pies and pints - although my readers tonight might not have any
problem with the extermination of the former - but more about
recognising what good work the clubs currently do to promote the
health and wellbeing of their visitors and members, and making what
changes they can, where necessary.
This can be through programme articles highlighting local health
programmes and campaigns, changing the after-match food to a more
healthy-eating option or providing exercise sessions for parents while
their children are at a training session.
The programme is something the local community clubs feel
passionately about, and we are proud to be part of the only Healthy
Stadia network that has amateur clubs showcased on the same stage
as the professional heavyweights.
Sunday featured the National Youth team in the Challenge Cup semifinal action against East Leeds, a bruising encounter, Leigh East running
out comfortable winners 31-12. After the game the spectators were
entertained by East Ladies and Miners on the 3G pitch, East winning
50-24.
This Saturday the big match at Ledgard Avenue is East against Miners
in the second round of the Tier 3 cup. K.O. 2:30
As always there will be a number of Junior games on Sunday from 10:30
in the morning, finishing with the Youth team facing Wigan St Judes
K.O. 1:30.

Martyn Ridyard’s scoring burst of 40 points (5 tries and 10 goals) in the
last two games has propelled him to within fifteen points of the 200
mark for the season. Martyn has only missed four kicks, out of 36
attempts in his last seven games. That’s an incredible 89% success rate.

Ryan Brierley has also scored five tries in the last two games, and is now way
out in front in our try scoring list with 17. What makes that total all the more

The Championship try-scoring chart, in the Sheffield programme, remarkably
