LOKHANDWALA: The residents of
Lokhandwala have been facing a consistent
issue of sex workers standing outside Shabri
Lane, near Laxmi Industrial Estate. The
solution to this, according to local Corporator
Jyotsana Dighe, was to light up the lane with
new light poles. Despite having done this on
April 7, the power from the light pole at the
corner of the lane has allegedly been cut off by
the sex workers since two weeks, who use the
area to carry out their business smoothly.
The prostitution ring consists of several
eunuchs who are dreaded by residents to the
extent that now they are reluctant to cross the
street at night. The audacity of these eunuchs
has also risen; they now stand openly on the
main road without the fear of being busted by
the police. In addition to the Shabri lane or
otherwise popularly known as the SAB TV
road, they also stand on the Old Lokhandwala
bridge (near Costa Coffee). Their fearlessness
is evident by the fact that the nearest police
chowky is just 250 metres away from the
bridge. The nuisance has now become a
severe headache for the residents of
thousands of families residing in the area, who
are worried that the level of obscenity might
rise if they are not thwarted from spreading it.
In order to get requisite information on the
matter, our reporter pretended to be a
customer and approached the sex workers.
Quite astonishingly, it was discovered that this
cheap sex was availed as cheap as Rs.300 and
the plots were the only place they would carry
out their lucid obscenity clearly suggesting the
area has already been turned into an open-air
brothel. The lane has a motorcycle repair shop
at one corner and the un-lit light pole on the
opposite end and is flanked by two large
barren plots on either side at the opening end
of the street. Eunuchs use the shed of the
repair shop and the dark corner of the lane to

call out anyone who even glances at them,
where they begin their business as soon as
10pm when the street is still busy with
passersby and moving traffic on the road. The
empty plots on both ends are used to carry
their detestable deeds.

Dear Mr Nair, We came across
your message addressed to
respected members of the
Celebration Sports Club. You
started the message saying
that you were surprised to read
a news item in our esteemed
'Mumbai Messenger.'
On the one hand you say
that we don't sell a single copy. On the other
hand, you agree that you read Mumbai
Messenger. We wonder from where you purchase
or got hold of the issue. For the first time we
appreciate your honesty mentioning that you
never paid us any money or you are not aware of if
anyone else has also paid. We are sorry to state
that this honesty remained on paper for a few
lines only because in the middle of the message
you again stuck to your bogie of lies by
mentioning someone from Mumbai Messenger
demanded or asked for Rs.5 lakh. You further
mentioned you can provide proof of the said deal
which can be obtained from your office.
Unfortunately for you and your false claims, we
sent 11 different people to your office to see or
listen to the so-called proof but none from your
office could provide any. We give you another
chance to prove that malicious and false charge or
we will think that it is yet another charade carried
on by you.
Now, back to us not selling a single copy. We
would like to inform you that we mention Rs.4 as
our production cost, but provide the same free of
cost to all our esteemed readers, including you.
We are true to our motto of selfless and honest
service towards our readers and society at large.
We don't sell copies because we are not on sale or
for sale. However, we appreciate your efforts in
selling our copies to a large number of citizens in
our area of operation. We know that you posted
more than 4000 messages and took us to the
homes of all these people. By this noble gesture,
you have become the largest salesperson for our
publication.
We assure you that you will be adequately
rewarded for your services towards Mumbai
Messenger at our first anniversary bash. You will
be awarded the 'Best Salesperson' whether you
remain Honorary Secretary or not by that time.
But we will honour our commitment.

TRANSGENDERS FLEX THEIR SEX
YIN and YANG
We all carry a relative proportion of
yin(feminine)and yang(masculine) in our
consciousness and to understand the
relationship of yin feminine)and yang
(masculine) within which reflects your
relationship in outside world... Here
comes a wonderful workshop to make
you understand the dynamics of you
relationship.
Following the evening of May 11
when our photographers took
snapshots of eunuchs and pimps
carrying out their flourishing
business without any disruption at
around 10:30pm, Mumbai
Messenger contacted local
Corporator Jyotsana Dighe and
dictated the issue. “I have been
receiving complaints regarding the
same, following which I had
instructed the BMC Electricity
Department to light up the street
light again. But, I am skeptical if the
issue will be resolved as lighting up
the poles hardly seems the answer to
this problem,” answered Jyotsana
Dighe.
A local resident Rajesh Bijlani
says, “The streetlight is the only way
we can feel safe. It feels threatening
to walk on the road, especially post
10. Apart from being dark and dull,
the area is scary as eunuchs' line up
on the street. I have noticed a lot of
big-wigs come and pick these
eunuchs. How can such things be
tolerated on the main road, in a
respectable residential area? No one
dares to evict them. I fail to
understand the lack of action against
them. I can only be hopeful that
authorities sort this issue, with or
without the help of streetlights.”
When Oshiwara police station was
contacted they dusted the matter off
their shoulders by claiming the area
didn't lie under their jurisdiction.
Subsequently, Amboli police Station
was asked the same question and
they replied, “Yes, we are aware of
such nuisance in the area, and we
our team is regularly patrolling the
area but the sex workers always
return.”
If the police is aware of the
happenings around the area and
their frivolous attempts has led to no
solution yet only indicates the
inefficiency of our administration and
police. If the area is not cleared off
the sex workers soon, the negative
impact it would have on our children
would be colossal and irreversible.

main agendas for today's protest
which have been subsequently heard

are resolved.

ANDHERI: On May 12, Congressmen
along with their supporters and
residents gathered in strength
outside BMC's K-West Ward, Andheri
under the leadership of Corporator
Jyotsana Dighe to protest and propel
authorities to resolve the chief
concerns of the residents of ward 55
(Swami Samarth Nagar).
Leader of Opposition Bala
Amberkar, Corporators Jyotsana
Dighe and Vanita Marucha, Abdul
Rehman Sahib, and Social Activist
Vishwa Shah were present at the site,
amongst others. The protestors
shouted slogans, booing the
inefficient BMC and clamouring for
their issues to be resolved. The
agenda for the protest was to alarm
the BMC against the rising
encroachments on footpaths and
pavements, beautification of dividers
and sidewalks, cleanliness of the
streets and water shortage.
The event began at 10am with
protests and slogans, following which
the protesters pushed inside BMC
gates. The policemen at the gate
thwarted most of them, but Bala
Amberkar, Vanita Marucha, Jyotsna
Dighe and a few others were let in to
visit Ward Officer Parag Masurkar.
The meeting lasted for about 20
minutes, after which the
representatives came out.
“We have been persistently
pushing the authorities to solve the
encroachment issues since the last
two weeks along with water shortage
and cleanliness problems. But one
thing needs to be understood - it is
not only the responsibility of the
authorities, the common man is
equally responsible for these
problems. People themselves have
encouraged hawkers and vendors by
patronizing them. They too must be
accountable to punishment along
with the hawkers. Every resident
must fulfil these issues to solve the
conundrum. We cannot expect
miracles by sitting in our airconditioned offices,” commented
Social Activist Vishwa Shah.
“The footpaths are for the public
to use. They should be free of all
encroachments including 'Shakhaas'
of political parties. Another
significant problem that has come to
our notice is that the streets are also

the area is one of our main agendas.

adequate help from the BMC to
resolve issues and I condemn this.
Our problems have been heard by
Ward Officer Parag Masurkar and we
hope for better results,” quoted Bala
Amberkar.
Albeit the promises from
authorities have been made, the
residents seemed a little skeptical on
the effects of the protest. “It would
be better if the authorities are
brought on sites where changes
need to be implemented. They
should be made to see the
grievances of the public. But I cannot
say how effective this protest is going
to be in bringing about reforms

The encroachment of pavements
by illegal hawkers has become a
major headache for the residents of
Andheri and BMC officials as well.
Other prominent issues of the
residents here also are dirty streets,
which might spell health hazards for
the public once the Monsoon sets in.
The BMC's pre-monsoon
preparations have already begun but
much cannot be said about its
efficiency in executing its plans. For
now, the residents continue to dodge
the encroachers and make peace
with dirty streets and localities.

from a proper person.”
Kamal Ahuja, Secretary of the Federation said, “Shekhar Satoskar made an
illegal federation. When the redevelopment started, they didn't follow any
rules, no AGM was conducted. They took signatures from each society and
submitted the redevelopment documents to Parvez Developer. Whoever
opposed, fake allegations were made against them. There were two
federations - one which consisted of these people, who weren't doing
anything. The other federation of Mohan Tendulkar terminated the builder.
These two federations then started fighting. The Court then ordered to choose
any one. A staff of 40 people came from High Court and carried out an election
on Oct 2, 2013 wherein we got selected by the residents. Then the builder
approached us and said that we wanted to continue the termination. We
applied to Court that the redevelopment is stuck since many years, so the
Court gave an order to go ahead with a new tender and to not appoint a builder
but shortlist it and present it in Court. The old builder is provoking these people
to disturb our meeting. Our house is stuck since 8 years. We are following the
Courts order. The agreement also which they had, was not registered. These
people have Vijay Rathore, Shekar Satoskar and Uday Matkar for forging
documents. They have come here to disturb the meeting and create drama in
front of the MLA. We want a proper house now. We have filed NCs, FIRs against
these people but the police doesn't take any action. These people launch false
complaints against us and threaten us. Even PI Gaikwad is involved with them.”
The society being in a prime location is on the hit list of big builders as the
rates would be soaring high once the redevelopment takes place.
Residents caught in
Redevelopment Fix
Residents hoping to get bigger flats are in a dilemma over constant
delays in their redevelopment project.
MLA Bharti Lavekar attended the meeting at HVPS
School auditorium, Oshiwara
Shrutika Sukhi
OSHIWARA: Nearly 350 residents of Oshiwara Mahada
Gaodevi Complex Co-op Housing Association are suffering
since almost 8 years because their society is not
undergoing redevelopment, as promised. Also, many
families are refraining from selling flats since they are
looking forward to bigger and better flats.
One of the residents, Sunit Razdan said, “Many of us
have been living in small houses and since the society was
supposed to go for redevelopment, we have just been
waiting for bigger flats. Our children have grown. It is
difficult to accommodate in a one-bedroom flat now. Few
residents have made a room out of the kitchen space,
while others have not since it is sheer waste of money if
the redevelopment takes place.” Many senior citizens who
have been hoping for bigger flats have lost hopes. They
feel their dreams of living in a bigger apartment won't
come true.
Another resident Surbhi Shweta said, “There almost
350 members and amongst them only 5-6 people are
against redevelopment. They are with the previous
builder who had promised us 7 years back. Everyone was
patient then, but now we just asked the new developers to
give us a basic idea of what they can offer us. They are
offering us better than what was offered to us earlier. So
now we just want the redevelopment to start.”
Another resident Sukirti Kandpal said, "The complex is
not a position to house so many people. The lifts are bad,
the approach is bad, at a lot of places, the cement has
come out. Right outside my house, the ceiling has fallen
off. We can't even renovate the house as we are not sure
when it will go for redevelopment and the houses are not
even strong enough that any renovation can take place.
Any new developer has their own share of issues. We can't
stay in our own house and are awaiting redevelopment."
With regards to solving the issue, on May 10, two
builders, Shirke and Rustomjee, presented their
redevelopment tender in front of the society at HVPS
School auditorium, Oshiwara. The Chief Guest at the
gathering was MLA Bharti Lavekar.
One of the residents who opposed this presentation,
Actor-Model Survi Chatterjee said, “I have a flat here. In
the year 2013, two members were selected from every
society - there were in all 10 members. Kamal Ahuja and
Subhash Patel, non-members also became members.
Without anyone's approval they became Secretary,
Chairman and Treasurer respectively, and started carrying
out illegal activities. Me and the others, who are
members, opposed this move. The other people
demanded a tender, whereas we opposed the tender as
the case is already going on in High Court and we are
awaiting the verdict. So now that they are finalizing the
tenders, we have doubts. Even we are association
members, but we were clueless about this all the time.
Who elected the builders? How can defaulters make a
choice? I want the redevelopment, but in a proper, legal
way. The High Court has said that you can call a tender,
but can't open it.”
There were arguments between the members of the
community and residents. People opposed the
programme and did not let it complete. MLA Bharti
Lavekar said, “I am here to resolve the dispute as the
people have requested me to do so. I have no views on
this issue.”
Another opposing member, Anand Patil said, “A tender
notice was not given to any society. OMC was appointed
without the knowledge of any society. Out of 10 elected
members, only 4 are active and they formed their own
independent association without consulting other
members. Elections, builders matter, everything is
pending in Court. As per orders, members cannot finalize
the tenders. When the tenders would open, all the
builders would be informed. In the other order, division
bench of this Court has kept the issue open - whether
election is directly by the Judge could be ordered; not in
the provision of Sec 77A. We want redevelopment, but
THE CASE
There were 6 societies and every society representative had decided in the
general body meeting that they wanted to opt for redevelopment as the
condition of the building was very bad. The rules of MHADA and
Government of Maharashtra were flouted. Under the table money was
allegedly given by a few and they appointed a builder. During this time, in
2010, an agreement took place, which was not registered, and on the basis
of that, Builder Parvez Damania started his trade and sold flats. He kept
taking money from others to make profits and didn't build people's houses.
In 2013, the society then passed a resolution and terminated him. He
challenged the termination and moved High Court; the case is still on.
During this time, members took permission of the Court to appoint a
builder. However, the Court gave an order that the society can't appoint a
builder but could go ahead with the tendering process. Out of 13 builders,
3 were shortlisted. The society was then to choose a preferred developer
and present him in Court.
RTO 'consultants'
flex their muscles
Aim to coordinate with agents across the
state, sitting outside the Andheri RTO
Mumbai Messenger Correspondent
FOUR BUNGALOWS: RTO agents are taking the Transport Commissioner's
crackdown on them head on and have formed a union at the Andheri
transport office. They claim they are representatives of vehicle owners and
will “fight the administration” as a combined force.
Ever since Mahesh Zagade, the new Transport Commissioner, took over in
December last year, he has cracked the whip on agents in his attempt to rid
the RTOs in the state off them.
This had irked the agents as well as Transport Minister Diwakar Raote,
who had questioned Zagade as to how he could define who an 'agent' is.
Sensing the political opportunity, the local unit of the Shiv Sena sprung
into action and mobilised agents into forming one entity. Sena's Jaywant
Parab led the efforts. The union of RTO agents, called Vahan Malak Chalak
Pratinidhi Sangh (Vehicle Owners Drivers Representative Association), was
inaugurated at the Andheri RTO on May 5. It was at this function that the
union asked all agents to refer to themselves as consultants. There are nearly
1 lakh such agents in the state, and, according to the newly formed union,
82,000 have already signed up as members. Baba Shinde, the President of
the association, claimed that it was only because of Zagade that no classified
working-class like agents had come together.
“We are representatives of vehicle owners, at the RTO; so we are not
agents. The aim of the union is to coordinate with agents across the state,
sitting here outside the Andheri RTO,"'said Shinde

BMC launches
anti-mosquito
drill
Gajendra Goswami
ANDEHRI: The BMC's pre-monsoon
preparations are on a high rise. In an
initiative to ensure public participation
in bringing down health hazards, it is
set to pick volunteers from the public
to detect mosquito breeding spots
and curb vector-borne diseases.
According to civic officials, the BMC
is set to train volunteers to find
mosquito breeding spots and take
requisite action to tackle the issue.
Workshops for citizens have already
been conducted in eight wards, in the
area of Colaba, Andheri, Bandra and
Byculla among others. This is the first
time the BMC is conducting a
mosquito-detector training
programme following last year, when
60% of the breeding spots were
revealed to be found in high rises
compared to 40% in the slums after
which BMC officials wrote to residents'
association and housing societies
urging them to appoint 'mosquito
breeding detectors' in their localities.
The programme is to be carried out in
two parts, i.e. - theoretical and
practical. While the theoretical
training had already commenced
since April, showing residents
powerpoint presentations. The
practical training is to begin once the
monsoon kicks in.
The move is set to bring
awareness among the residents and
realize them of their duties in ensuring
cleanliness and a disease proof
locality. The Corporation's decision
comes in the backdrop of last year
when city residents refused to cooperate with the civic officials and
denied entry to insecticide
department staffers for surveying
various spots following which the BMC
has now decided to rope in the
residents themselves to tackle the

Programme to be carried out in two parts theoretical and practical
problem. The BMC has proposed to let
residents of each society, chawl and
slum colony to appoint at least five
members each to work as mosquito
breeding detectors. Names of the
detectors will be registered with the
insecticide department of the BMC
ward office. The corporation will also
train pest control agency, if the society
has appointed any, if need be.
The BMC is set to share a list of the
breeding spots it found in its last
year's drives with voluntary detectors
which are to be inspected on a weekly
basis by the civic employees as well.

Emotional Drama at
demolition drive
Residents of illegal structure threaten and curse society members of
Bonanza Residency
Shrutika Sukhi
S.V. ROAD: On May 9, demolition
work took place outside Bonanza
Residency, on S.V.Road. The first
floor of the old structure, which was
constructed against the wall of
Bonanza Residency was broken by
BMC officials. The society members
of Bonanza had been trying to get rid
of the said illegal structure since the
past four months.
Before the officials could arrive,
there was chaos by the people who
lived in the illegally constructed
house, who started threatening
and cursing the society members of
Bonanza Residency. A resident
shouted, “You will be cursed for
breaking someone else's house.”
Rahim Shaikh, a relative of one of the
residents said, “Within one week I'll
get the house back.” He also told this
correspondent rudely, “Spoiling a
poor man's life, won't do you any
good. I won't let this demolition
happen.” He lamented, “We have
been staying here since the year
1943. The building came up in the
year 2000. The gate of the building
wasn't even there. We have
pictures. Few months back, the wall
of a house was demolished, which
can be seen. Now they are breaking
such an old house, it's wrong.
Yesterday the BMC took away the
booster from the society. Water theft
has taken place, but no action has
been taken. Couples come outside
the society and get cosy with each
other. This is not objected to. But if
we occupy space outside our homes,
it is a problem for people. I had told
them that if this is illegal, I will break
the structure myself, but if one tells
to break someone's house, I can't
do that! We have filed an RTI and
hope to get proof against the society
then.” Saleem Khan another resident
said, “I've been staying here since
1962 and since the society has come,
the people have been troubling us.”
After the BMC officials and police
arrived to carry out demolition work,
the residents pleaded them not to do
so and told them that they have all
legal documents. The officials
ignored them and carried on with
their work. The people continuously
kept saying that the building was an
old one. Iqbal, a resident of the old
building threatened to break the
houses of the residents of Bonanza
Residency. Rahim also yelled, “We
shall take this matter to the
Corporator. After some time when
talks didn't work, Rahim Shaikh
called Bipin Kharade, a BMC official to
talk to the person carrying out

demolition work. Rahim ordered
the BMC workers to stop the work,
when N.B. Sawant told them not to
stop and that they were ready to face
the consequences. Even a balcony
was welded against the light pole,
which was taken off.
Najma said, “Four generations of
ours have been born here. My
mother, me, my son and now his
children. That time, the building
wasn't even here. The BMC has
broken this place thrice earlier.
Yesterday, when the BMC took their
illegal motor, they again called the
BMC to break our house.”
BMC officer Bipin Kharade said,
“Almost a month back we had
demolished a wall of the house, but
they constructed it again. The
ground floor house is old and legal
but the first floor is illegal.” Another
BMC official N.B.Sawant echoed,
“They had permission only for the
house which was down, but they did
not take permission for the level
above.”
One of the residents of Bonanza
Residency said, “Since February we
were trying to get rid of the place that
they had constructed, but at times
either the BMC wasn't available or
the police, for protection. Today we
made sure that everything was in
place. They trouble us a lot, abuse us
and even threaten us. These people
also sit around making lot of noise till
late at night.”

YOUR VIEW
Students v/s Suicides
Depression among students is not new. The death of 21-year-old IITian
Jitesh Sharma has coerced us to confront the issue yet again. The building
pressure to secure a well-paid job by getting high grades has not merely
degraded the quality of education, but has also forced students into
depression. Even after securing excellent grades, students fall short of
getting admission into desired universities. Student suicides raise questions
not only over our education system but also how we as a society have failed
to counter this problem. This is what local residents had to share with
Gajendra Goswami on the issue...
PHOTOS/DIKSHA
NAVED AKHTAR, 20:
Most of the youth cannot tackle pressure. The rules and
regulations, peer pressure, parent pressure is just too
much. A lot of people cannot face failure and suicide
becomes an easy way out. But one can also blame it on
the system.
VARUN VOHRA, 15:
I am in class 12 now, and taking coaching for IIT-JEE
entrance exams. I agree that that everyone undergoes
pressure and stress but our decisions pave the way to our
future. Students entering this field must also be prepared
to deal with pressure.
DEEPTI JOSHI, 16:
Everyone around us keeps instructing us to study.
There's too much pressure. Sometimes we're so busy
studying, that we forget to even eat. Everything is
competitive and if you lose in the competition, you've
failed and nobody likes failing.
SAARA, 17:
I've just completed my 10th exams and I notice that our
education system is based only on grades. We are taught
to score better grades, whereas teachers should actually
be preparing us for life. Transparency with parents is the
only way to avoid depression.
ROHINI, 50:
Spirituality can be used to deal with the problem. A lot
of time parents pressurize their children, which leads to
depression. Children are not brought up how to think
and feel appropriately. Everything has come down to
actions. Feelings have been vindicated, which has led to
such serious circumstances.
ASHUTOSH, 22:
The pressure from parents is the most common reason.
A lot of problems are inter-related and so a lot of times
the problem becomes too big, even before it is assessed.

Tourism Ministry organizes
Cinematic interaction
Mumbai Messenger Correspondent
JUHU: On May 8, the Ministry of
Tourism-Government of India organized
a cinematic interaction with production
houses from the entire MediaEntertainment at the J.W.Marriott. The
speakers of the event were Girish
Shankar, IAS-Addl. Secy, Ministry of
Tourism, Govt. of India and Dr Gulshan
Sharma and DG-ICSI-Int Chamber.
The media entertainment industry
has tremendous potential to give a boost
to Indian economy, promote Indian
Tourism and generate large foreign
exchange, direct and indirect
employment opportunities for the
untapped existing potential in our
country and many more avenues.
Nowadays, film makers have been smart
enough to capture the Indian audience in large numbers by
laying bare the hard lifestyle of the common man, although
such realistic movies don't influence the travel and tourism
sector directly, some scenes manage to capture the eyes of
travellers, promoting them to travel to India later on.
However most of the production houses move out of
country due to various hassle in getting clearance, lack of
single window clearance and agency taking overall
responsibility to help the entire industry through Ministry of
Information and Broadcasting, Ministry of Culture, Ministry
of Defence, take up financial incentives through Ministry of
Finance and State government concerned departments,
etc. The Ministry of Tourism, through ICSI- will be showing
entire Indian Cinematic Tourism from 26-28th of June in
Mumbai with all state tourism departments' participation
and explaining what all they would be offering.
Ignorance is 'bliss' for the BMC
BMC delays refund of property tax indefinitely; blames software issues
Gajendra Goswami
ANKLESHWAR BALA, 48:
I come from Gujarat and even after being an industrial
and relatively developed area, there is unemployment.
Students somehow secure jobs, but are underpaid. So,
even after such expensive education, if there are no jobs,
then the options left with them are very few. Naturally,
such thoughts pop in their mind.
ANKIT TAGGAD, 23:
Accepting failure is the key to not falling into this trap.
A lot of students don't feel secure about their future and
even little disappointment can lead to depression.
Staying strong in adversaries is very crucial.
SUMIT BHOJWANI, 42:
It is very difficult to gauge a depressed child. Pressure to
perform and deliver, or relationship issues or doing
something which they don't necessarily enjoy can push
students into such a phase. Communication with parents
is very important.
LOKHANDWALA: The BMC might have gone electronic with
its new mobile application, but its services still remain substandard. This time, it were the members of Cosmos
Society, Lokhandwala who were on the receiving end of its
ignorance. Sanjay Parashar, member of Cosmos Cooperative Housing Society narrated the series of events
incarnating the BMC's sheer negligence and poor service.
On March 16, 2015 when the Society Mnager Vitobha
Godkar visited the BMC office to pay the property tax on
behalf of the society, he was told that their property tax for
the period 1/04/2013 to 13/3/2014 was due. Vitobha
protested, claiming the payment had already been made.
On checking the BMC records, no evidence of the payment
was found. Subsequently, the payment was made to the
BMC on the same day. The confusion cleared when Vitobha
produced the payments receipts issued by the BMC to
Cosmos Society confirming that Cosmos had paid their tax
through cheques dated 21/09/2003 and 08/03/2004 for
Rs.93,770 and Rs.94,000 respectively drawn on Oriental
Bank of Commerce (Lokandwala branch) along with a
notice charge of Rs.50. The receipts for the same were
issued to Cosmos Society on 28/09/2003.
“We wrote a letter to the BMC claiming our tax refund on
September 7, 2014 and even after assurance from the
officials we haven't received the refund yet. Over 6 months
have passed since then. The only request we put forth to
the BMC is to accelerate the status of our request and
complete the refund process,” said Parashar.
After contacting BMC officials it was discovered that this
isn't the only case where refund is still pending. ”The
refunds have been sanctioned through the computer
software and are pending because we haven't yet received
this software from the BMC head office. The software is
developed by a company called ABM and is to be issued by
New Tax Sale department in Byculla,” informed a civic
official from the BMC Tax Refund Department.

Speaking about the app, a

of the university was inevitable.
“Students do not visit the university

students have smart phones with
internet connectivity it was decided
to have an app for their benefit,” said
the spokesperson.
Students said that it was high

moving with the times. A former
student and Andheri resident Manoj

always dependent on the college to
inform us about decision taken by the
university. At times due to

an ideal solution to the problem and
allow students to be updated as soon

unique style of contestant selection which would be done by blind

other cities, the Punjabi star is committed to coach voices
for the show. The controversial singer has much recently

new music to the industry and I enjoyed working with him. He's

“The day I feel I have got what I
wanted, I will quit the industry”
RMAN JOSHI
Sharman Joshi is well known for his outstanding roles SHA
in some big hits like Style, Rang De Basanti, Golmaal,
Life in a Metro, 3 Idiots and Ferrari Ki Sawaari. He will soon
be seen again in 'Ishq Censored' along with Mallika
Sherawat. Here are some excerpts of his conversation with
Kritika Sharma about his journey and much more...
One word that describes you...
Cool...
As your parents were already in theatre, was acting
your first dream?
Yes, I have dreamt of becoming an actor since childhood.
SWATI SHARMA'S
reaches new heights
She hails her father's courage and faith in her, for her
thrilling success
Gajendra Goswami
The Bollywood music Industry is not short of talent – very often, unknown
faces pop up from oblivion to leave us awestruck with their mesmerizing
talent. Swati Sharma, the voice behind 'Banno' from 'Tanu Weds Manu
Returns' is no exception to this case.
Swati hails from Muzzafarpur, Bihar and came to Mumbai two years back
along with her father, who she said left for Delhi (where he works) after a
month and from there on, she started living with her maternal grandmother. “I
looked for links online on social networking sites and started gathering
contacts,” she recounts when asked how 'Banno' came her way. “I was giving
auditions regularly and one fine day I got a call to sing 'Banno.' By then, I had
no idea the song would be selected for 'Tanu Weds Manu Returns' and will be
shot on national award winning actress, Kangna Ranaut. It was only two
months later that the news reached me” she confesses in a flat voice.
When asked on when she realized she wanted to pursue music she answers,
“When Adnan Sami released his album 'tera chehra,' I started to parody his
voice. I found my voice similar to his, which was certainly far from the truth,”
she amuses herself and continues, “this childish epiphany introduced me to
singing. Not long after that, my father convinced me to pursue music as career
and from there on there was no looking back. I learned my primitive lessons of
music from my father and later I started training professionally under the
guidance of my guru Pankaj Maharaj.” But neither Adnan Sami nor Pankaj
Maharj is the inspiration, which she finds in her little sister, Shikha. “She is
hearing impaired, and nor can she speak. I saw the beam of my dreams in her
eyes and she became my motivation to succeed.”
Swati went on to take Sangeet Visharad from Chandigarh University's
Pracheen Kala Kendra and recorded several devotional songs before she
became a Youtube sensation with her single 'Kyu Kho Gaye,' composed by a
popular Pakistani band, Raeth. “I was performing on stage since school and
later I travelled to Delhi, Rajasthan, Lucknow and several other places to
record devotional albums before coming to Mumbai,” Swati mentions
humbly. This isn't surprising. She made such thrilling success all by herself.
She trains with dedication and is resolute to achieve her dreams in more than
one way. She hails her father's courage and faith in her for her thrilling success.
‘Banno' is a song with flamboyant lyrics and obstinate clamour. It is a song
which perfectly suits her personality. She is just 21 years old, and yet there are
mightier projects in the pipeline for her. She has signed six songs for Rajiv
Ruia's 'Direct Ishq' and songs with Ash King and Nikhil D'Souza in Natalia
Janoszek starrer 'Flame.' Swati is deeply moved by Banno's success but insists
on remaining grounded. Her idols are Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle and
Rihaana and has a long way to go in the industry.
Apart from your parents, what motivated you to
act?
It was the first time when I stepped on stage. I felt good
about myself. I felt connected with the audience. I felt great
about my performance and got good feedback. All these
things motivated me.
You became popular with your very first movie
'Style.' How was the journey post that?
The whole journey had its own challenges, which were very
interesting because life without challenges will be very
boring for me. It had many ups and downs, but I enjoyed
both.
You are mostly loved by the audience for your
comic roles. Is comedy the genre you always
wanted to enact?
I have done many comic roles and people have appreciated
me. But my career has not come to an end yet and I want to
have all round challenges for me. I believe that when I have
put my hard work into a movie and people find it
entertaining, then whichever genre it is, I would be happy
to do it.
You have done more second lead roles till date. Was
it something you have chosen or becoming a lead is
your preference?
I have been getting lead roles a lot now. It's not important
whether you do a lead or second lead. It's true that anyone
would love to do a lead role and take all the responsibility of
leading a movie which is very exciting. Ferrari Ki Sawari
opened the gates of lead roles for me. I do good work only
for myself. So whatever role it is, if I feel liking doing
something I just go ahead and do it. Sometimes it may not
turn well and sometimes it may.
Out of all your movies, which was the most
challenging role?
I don't feel anything challenging has come my way yet.
Was there a time you realised that you got all you
wanted?
I have never felt that way. The day I do, I will quit the
industry.
What have been your highest and lowest points till
date?
For me it's all a state of mind. My happiness is not derived
from factors such as my career, money, etc. My happiness
comes from other things, which if are in place, make me
happy. I don't get de-motivated by failures. I believe in hard
work and even if a failure takes places, I hold myself
responsible for it. I celebrate both, the highest and lowest
points of life.
A message for aspiring actors...
I want to tell all of them that this industry is not as
glamorous and easy as it seems. You need to put
your hard work into it and come prepared for
everything and not just fame.
Huma Qureshi roots for budding designers
Huma Qureshi recently was in Chandigarh for the
Blenders Pride Magical Nights. Huma walked the
ramp for aspiring designer Nitya Bajaj. Before the
show she also got a chance to interact with the
others designers who were presenting at the show.
Huma briefly went through their collection and
interacted with them. They shared details of their
collection with Huma and also spoke about varied
things they have been doing. Huma quite liked their
work and is keen to go back and check their entire
collection.
Huma was really impressed with their work and
was surprised on how Bollywood has not tapped into
this market. She feels there is a lot of potential of
budding designers in other cities and she wants to
try and encourage their work.

INNER PEACE
the way to bliss!
Set yourself free from all pain
Pain of any sort is an indication of
guilt. Chronic pain comes from chronic
guilt, often so deeply buried that we
are not even aware of it anymore.
Guilt is a total useless emotion. It
never makes anyone feel better nor
does it change the situation.
There are many misconceptions
about guilt. Guilt is a feeling that
follows a perceived “wrong doing” or
“bad” for what we become conscious
of we did. Feeling guilty means we are
giving a message to the Universe that
we have done something wrong and
so we need punishment and we
punish ourselves by creating pain in
our life. There are many myths about
guilt that often limits our lives and
make us miserable.
The first and the biggest myth is
that feeling guilty can protect us from
being punished. In fact, guilt is an
unconscious, “I owe you” for
punishment. When we feel guilty, we
attract punishment from the world
and also we create for ourselves and
we feel as though we've never been
sufficiently punished. How do we self
punish? We punish ourselves by doing
something we believe we shouldn't do
or that is wrong to do. Interestingly
many times we don't do anything in
actions, but have some thought and
we start feeling guilty for it and get
hooked on to the thought and this
happens because we believe even to
think a thought was a sin and now
punishment from outside world is
unavoidable. So we punish ourselves
in order to prevent the receiving and
still create the punishment from
outside too.
The second myth about guilt is
that it prevents us from repeating the
wrong doing, still that's a lie. Feeling
guilty frequently triggers us to do, or
continue doing the exact same thing
that we believe we've already done
wrong- again as self-inflicted
punishment. Guilt is one of the cause
of the actions that we later regret. A
simple way to break this cycle is to
either decide you have punished
enough or simply let go of the wanting
to punish yourself for the thought or
deed. If you find yourself in a guilt

loop than let go of wanting to do it
again or simply notice what is
happening and welcome the feeling
that are motivating the behavior, this
will start breaking the pattern. If you
are blaming yourself for someone else
actions of going beyond the limits,
remember it is not your fault even
though it feels that way.
Also let go of wanting to blame
yourself for other person's mistakes.
Now is the time to set yourself free
from all the punishment. Your
“sentence” is now over, so let yourself
free from the prison of punishments.
The only way to set you free is accept
what happened or happening or what
you doing, take responsibility and
forgive yourself. Forgiving is only
giving up, letting go. You are lovable
just because you exist. You are a child
of god so stop punishing yourself,
release all the pain and start forgiving
and loving yourself from today.
Review of 'Oh Calcutta'
The theory that an eating
joint frequented by the
locals, are the must visit
places if you want to eat
good food. For example,
if a Chinese restaurant is
frequented by Chinese
people then that is the
place visit for a good
Ananya Banerjee
Chinese meal.
I was wondering about this theory when I went to “Oh
Calcutta” for lunch the other day. Being a Bengali, walking
into a restaurant offering the cuisine which I grew up with,
will the place offer me anything different or worthwhile at
all?
“Oh Calcutta” offers food essentially from Kolkata , and
is primarily Bengali food.
We ordered for starters, bhetki fish fry
(they claim their bhekti is flown from
Kolkata directly - the Bengali obsession
of sweet water fish is a known fact and
the best place to get it is none other than
Bengal). The fish fry along with the
kashundi (a mustard dip) was excellent.
Also ordered as a starter, kankra
chingri bhape. It is an innovation of Oh
Calcutta. This dish is perhaps the only
dish other than the boneless Ilish (Hilsa
fish), I will go back for. As the name says,
morsels of kankra (crab) and chingri
(shrimp) coated with mustard paste and
(bhape) steamed in banana leaves
makes it a divine tasting appetizer. This process similar to
making a 'macher paturi' (steamed fish in banana leaves).

They do have another signature dish 'boneless ilish or
hilsa in mustard sauce' which I just spoke about where the
most tedious job of deboning the tastiest and bonniest fish
in the world is done by them. Yet the mustard sauce doesn't
pack as much punch as a sorshebata (mustard paste) done
at home. The complimentary appetizers like alukabli
(somewhat like a aluchat) , tomato poda and bori bhaja
were served. All were reasonably tasty.

But disappointing was govindobhog rice, which had no
aroma (a special aromatic short grain rice from Bengal
popularly known for its aroma. For instance, if govindobhog
is cooked at home the whole house smells of it). A very
mediocre mung daal with jhuri alubhaja, came alongwith
the rice. The alubhaja (potatoes cut like straws and deep
fried. Regarded as a comfort food when had with daal and
rice) was stale.
Mocchar ghonto (banana blossom
preparation) was made well but lacked salt.
As for the dessert, Nolengurer ice-cream was very well
done though I had tasted a better version elsewhere. The
nolen-gurer sondesh (sandesh with datejaggery) as was reasonably fresh.
My verdict. The place has great
ambiance. Rabindrasangeet playing at
the background. Popular Bengali novels
and literature formed décor of the place.
But I was convinced about one thing and
that saddens me a great deal, that the
Bengali food we grew up, are not cooked
by the modern generation anymore.
That's the reason they have to eat in a

there is no comparison really. A normal
Bengali home cooked meal will be far
superior to what you can eat in any
restaurant. Oh Calcutta is no exception. Hence in spite of
our pockets being lightened considerably, (without alcohol
and mocktails, the bill was Rs 8000 for 5 persons), And the
food could not touch our heart, though the price did.
So still wondering the theory of Chinese going to a
Chinese restaurant will hold true or not in this case.
Definitely not for people who can cook decent Bengali food
at home. But surely for people who want to delve into a bit
of nostalgia and definitely for people who are non-Bengalis
wanting to try this fabulous cuisine of East.

Relish Arabian
food at Marhaba
Mewati Sitaram
If Arabian food is on your mind, all you need to do is head to Grand
Sarovar Premiere hotel, a five star hotel located on S V Road Junction at
Goregaon West. It has open air terrace Arabic restaurant, 'Marhaba,'
meaning 'welcome' in Arabic. Marhaba is a good choice for Arabic
cuisine not only due to the food itself but also for the beautiful view that
surrounds the restaurant where foodies can relish an Arabian
experience.
When looking at a restaurant in terms of menu selection, location and
price, Marhaba scores top marks. Open Skies, Dazzling Moonlight and
Humming waterfalls make for a romantic setting at this lovely newly
open restaurant. A quiet romantic spot next to the waterfall or an action
table right near the Live Station, Marhaba is where the "beautiful
people" will flock for fabulous Arabic Cuisine, fine wines, exotic
drinks, friendly service and to have a whole new Arabian experience.
Marhaba offers exquisite traditional Arabic cuisine from Mezzeh
such as Tzatziki, Falafel and Sambousek cheese to Main Course in the
form of Shistaouk, Samak Bil Tahini, Paneer Touk, Gambari Mishwee
and a lot more.
Ajoy Balkrishna, General Manager Grand Sarovar Premiere Hotel
says, “People do not mind travelling to far areas to have an authentic
experience. Arabian food is public choice which is gaining popularity in
Mumbai too, thanks to their travel abroad. They enjoy when they get to
eat authentic cuisine here. The highlight of Arabian food is that it is
mildly flavoured.”
“The Arabic cuisine is one of the most soughtafter cuisine, gaining momentum all over. We
serve nothing but the finest authentic Arabic
cuisine in Marhaba. All our food is made with high
quality ingredients. All our sauces are made inhouse using traditional recipes. The guests are
globe trotters and know real taste so we are here to
serve them the best,” says Executive Chef
Kamlesh Rawat. So, the next time you are in
Goregaon and crave for enjoying an Arabian meal,
you know where to go.

Karkare wanted to
leave the force
Hemant Karkare, the decorated IPS officer, could have
been alive today had he quit the IPS last year.
My association with Karkare goes back to 1986. He was
a quiet but strong person. He believed in systematic
policing and strived hard to sort out problems faced by his
colleagues and friends. The frequency of our meetings
increased after he was posted with Intelligence Bureau.
Later, he was posted in Vienna and I was based in UK.
But we kept meeting and talking over phone. The bond
further strengthened when I returned to Mumbai in 2005.
Late last year, he called me and said that he wanted to
discuss something personnel. The next day we met and he
made a shocking statement: he said he was thinking of
resigning from the IPS. He had a handsome offer from a big
Priyanka had to see a counsellor. Her husband
and she married for love against the wishes of their
families. The objections were merely prejudices, so
they had no real reason to obey. It wasn't as if
Priyanka did not look pretty, was not educated or not
from the same background. Priyanka and Ajay went
ahead and did the deed – until death do us apart.
Today a few years and one child later, they are
practically on opposite sides of the fence about tiny
idiosyncrasies, which can get to be a loadful. Ajay
has a problem with keeping appointments at work if
he stays out late at night. Yet he meets up with
friends on weeknights / weekends and sleeps
through the ensuing day. They both have to reach
work and the child has to be sent to school in the
mornings. He stands a chance of being demoted or
worse, loses his job. The child keeps asking why her
father sleeps when she comes home from school,
which is hard to explain without telling the child
about the late nights, the drinking, etc the father
indulges in.
On weekends, Ajay just lazes around the house,
does not want to go out anywhere or do any chores.
It was not like that when they were courting each
other. All that he wanted was to be with Priyanka
each waking moment and Priyanka was so used to
that kind of availability and attention that its become
a lonely trip for her now.
Priyanka feels weekends should mean spending
more time with the child in activating atmosphere so
they all get a break together. That would mean a
picnic maybe, or a movie. That's not agreeable to
Ajay because he wants to rest out the long week by
staying at home in bed, watching TV.
It has genuinely come to that. Couples, who
wanted to give everything they ever had to each
other when they met, have reached such levels of
selfishness that simple give and take has become
impossible without the retraction of a third party.
Life in a Metro
That may be a fried, a family member or a counsellor.
Selfishness is of three levels – one is, you scarcth
my back, but I won't scratch yours. Shobha and her
husband are struggling in their relationship, both of
them feeling trapped. She goes to work, handles the
house, drops the child to school, does the groceries,
etc. Gaurav truly believes his only job is to be able to
bring home a pay cheque. He will never stay awake
when the child wakes up with a bad dream, he will
never take a leave if his wife needs him around.
Shobha feels that she is pulling a cart, which has only
one wheel and its back breaking.
The second level of selfishness is that the parties
involved will not share each other's emotional
distress or joys. Raja Srivastava lost his only brother.
His wife had fixed a night out with her friends who
had come from abroad. It was Raja's brothers prayer
ceremony but Sonia insisted that after the ceremony
they must go out. It would break the onslaught of
events and pain for both of them. Today Raja feels it
was her obsession with herself and her need to party
that was the real reason that she wanted to go out
then.

The bail,
jail propaganda
How many of us have never used money/power/status
to get things done?
Everything, the big debate, the
chaos, the tweets, the propaganda all just seems pointless. Personally
speaking, I feel before we start
pelting stones at others, let's take a
look at our own glass houses.
How many of us have never used
money/power/status to get things
done? Especially involving
government offices? How many of
us have not bribed babus and waiters
because we were too busy being
moralists and holier than thou, to
actually wait in the queue? How
many of us have never bribed a
traffic police constable when we
jumped a signal? How many of us
have never paid extra to stand in VIP
queues at big Temples?
media company, he said. I told him
I was of the opinion that he should
not quit, at least for the time being.
He felt relieved, dropped me at Baljeet Parmar
office and left for his job.
We always had an underlying understanding not to
reveal anything about our discussions to any one. But, this
time, I called up the then DGP, PS Pasricha, and told him in
confidence to talk to Karkare and prevail upon him to stay
put in the police force.
Today, when Karkare is no more, somewhere deep
down my heart, I feel guilty of pressuring him to stay in
uniform. If he had resigned as he wished he could have
been alive.
Let's address the core issue now.
Money/power buys us comfort and
after all, what we really want to do is
lead a comfortable life. I see hourlong debates happening on the issue
by big-shot lawyers, judges and
celebrities, preaching morality and
how the system is flawed, when
ironically they'll use the same
money/power and preferential
treatment, which they condemn on
national television to get away with
anything.
The rich and powerful influence
the judiciary and political system all
over the world, nothing India
specific as being projected by many.
But also consider the judiciary
should not ever get affected by
This may sound callous to you, but this incident
has actually happened to these two. The third level
of selfishness is when one partner will not let the
other evolve or share the fruits of his/her evolution
with him.
Not allowing the spouse to get a new job, or
accept a promotion because it would mean a kick to
the deep seated ego of the other would be indeed
unfair on part of any one. To refuse to take over
responsibilities for a while if the other wants to do a
PhD or go off to Vipassana. Sacrifices made while the
going was rough and desertion when the going is
good is an extreme example of the same syndrome.
This is a pattern seeping into the dynamics of
most relationships…whether married or not. The
effect is that men and women are unhappy with their
partners after a while. This is because as a class of
people we seem to have forgotten what it is to share,
to give! However, the deeper effect is the legacy we
are building for ourselves. Our children, our
perceptions and our hereafter. Though they seem
eternal, they will all come back in our face as soon as
the means are gone.
public view or media trial. Most of us
are also prejudiced most times, when
it comes to celebs like Salman Khan.
This kind of mental state prevails
too, without actually knowing the
facts of the matter. I am not saying
Khan is not guilty, all I am saying is
that he has done everything that we
would, were we in his position. He
has the freedom to hire any lawyer,
give any amount of money as fee and
fight for his case.
The sorry state of affairs is
nothing new. It was happening
before and will continue to happen.
Salman Khan or for that sake any
other big name is just peripheral with
respect to this issue. Just because the
name of a big superstar was linked to
this case, it was blown out of
proportion by the media, and all of a
sudden everyone started blaming the
system and pointing fingers.
I once heard of a case: A small boy
once stole Rs.200 because he was
hungry and needed to buy food. His
bail was set at Rs.10,000. It has been
17 years and the case file is still
rotting somewhere in the ramshackled offices of the legal-aid
lawyers. No one is even bothered!
Just because there was no celebrity
involved here.
So who is to be blamed for this
miscarriage of justice? I think it is the
Indian judiciary system. It took them
13 years to convict someone and just
3 hours to set him free. And what
happens to the same judicial system
when a commoner claims bail? The
issue is that why does the same
judicial system which fears that an
innocent person may get convicted
as in case of Salman, does not
reciprocate the same fear in case of a
common man?
Of course, how quickly the
sentence was suspended, a lot of
rules were broken, a lot of money
exchanged hands and yes, there is
inherent injustice which took place
here. But the fact of the matter is the
age old adage that the system needs
to be changed. The case is prejudice.
It would be wrong to conclude
anything based on ones perception.
Questioning the judiciary points out
one's weakness of being Indian, if
not Being Human.

Dear Editor,
I am a resident of Lokhandwala and
I was happy to see that you have
covered the mangroves issue in
your paper. Mangroves are very
important to maintain an ecological
balance. The place where they are
now is becoming a dumping ground
and many people have vested
interests. I am glad that the residents
are understanding the importance of
the mangroves and taking a step to
save them. Mumbai Messenger,
being a local paper is giving this
issue an importance which is a good

issue till it's resolved.
Keep up the good work,

Thank you so much for doing a

because of my busy schedule, I had
completely forgotten about it. It
struck me after I read the article in
your paper and now I have quite
some time to plan something really
special for her. In fact yours is the
only paper where I saw anything
pertaining to the day. I think rest of
the papers will put up something on
Sunday only and I wouldn't have
got any time to plan things. Thank
you once again!

To the Editor
I have completed my 12th exams.
My results will be out soon and I
was just wondering about studying
abroad. I did think of looking up the
Internet for details as no one in my
family has knowledge about
overseas education. I felt really lazy
to search the internet, and it was
only 2-3 days later, when my dad
showed me this article on overseas
studies from your newspaper. All
my queries were answered. Now I
have some basic knowledge and I
shall give it a shot. Such educationbased articles really help. Thank
you!

You may hit the gym regularly to build muscles, you may adhere to a strict diet
plan to lose weight, you may run miles to tone your body or do yoga to keep up a
healthy body and mind, but if do not sleep well, all of the above is nothing but
sheer waste of time.
The importance of sleep to our body and mind is obvious. Deficiency of sleep
can cause instant damages (such as car crash) or it can harm you over time. For
example, ongoing deficiency of sleep can raise the raise the risk of some chronic
diseases. We spend one third of our lives sleeping, this article explores the
reason behind it.
Physical Health: Sleep is involved in the healing and repair of our heart and
blood vessels. Therefore, deficiency of sleep is linked to increased risk of heart
disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and stroke. Lack of sleep
also increases the risk of obesity. Sleep also supports healthy growth and
development. Deep sleep triggers the body to release the hormone that
promotes normal growth in children and teens. This hormone also boosts muscle
mass and helps repair cells and tissues in children, teens, and adults. Sleep also
plays a role in puberty and fertility. Our immune system relies on sleep to stay
healthy which can be hampered by an ongoing sleep deficiency. Quality sleep at
night helps to function efficiently throughout the day. People who are sleep
deficient are less productive at school and work. They tend to take more time
and make more mistakes. Lack of sleep can also cause micro-sleep - brief
moments of sleep that occur when one is awake. Micro-sleep cannot be
controlled and may lead to severe hazards including life-staking accidents. In this
way, sleep cannot only be harmful on a personal basis but can also cause largescale damages.
Mental Health: A good night's sleep is essential for physical and
psychological growth. When we wake up, all parts of our body wake up with us.
But when we sleep, not all parts of our body sleep. While asleep, our mind
prepares itself for the next day. It forms new pathways to help us learn and

Fads come and go, but jogging has

quality of life. The benefit of jogging is
that it can reduce your risk of
developing a host of diseases. Among these is heart disease since your
cardiovascular system since gets a great workout with this exercise. Jogging
helps to keep high blood pressure at bay. One mechanism it activates is the
lowering of LDLo r the “bad cholesterol” in your blood as you do vigorous
exercise such as jogging.
2. Jogging Helps Prevent Some Cancers: Researchers strongly agree that
jogging is helpful in the prevention of some cancers. This is achieved by the
better oxygenation of the entire body while we are jogging. Cells that do not get
adequate supplies of oxygen have been known to mutate more vigorously, often
turning malignant. Jogging increases the supply of oxygen to all parts of the
body, helping prevent some cancers.
3. Jogging Helps Keep Infectious Diseases at Bay: Jogging also strengthens
the immune system remarkably well. There is strong evidence that aerobic
exercise helps promote the stimulation of macrophages or bacteria fighting cells
and lymphocytes that fight infections thru the immune system. Having these
cells circulate systemically helps boost our over-all immunity to stave off several
infectious diseases, such as the common cold and flu which are viral diseases,
and some bacterial infections.
4. Jogging Wages War with Diabetes: A sedentary lifestyle and being
overweight has been shown to directly increase your risk of developing diabetes.
Adopting jogging and a healthy lifestyle can prevent you from acquiring this
debilitating condition.
5. Improved Mental Fitness: Jogging also benefits our mental health. Being
in shape gives us a better sense of confidence and self esteem. You are also able
to improve your over-all demeanour since jogging helps release the feel-good
hormones called endorphins.
6. Combat Stress with Jogging: Jogging is very helpful when it comes to
fighting stress. It helps put you in a more peaceful state of mind and helps
promote an upbeat attitude. Jogging or running on a treadmill can give
immediate tension release by helping the release of brain chemicals that have a
calming effect on our emotions.
7. Jogging Helps you Lose Weight: The benefits of jogging for women and
men is that it almost has no equal with regards to weight regulation. It is
estimated that you will burn roughly around 150 calories for every mile that you
go jogging.
remember information. Sleep helps one pay attention, make decisions and be
creative. Deficiency of sleep may lead to impulsive behaviour, mood swings,
depression and suicide. A good night's sleep accelerates mental and emotional
well being. The amount of sleep varies as per the age of a person. While
newborns are recorded to sleep for 16-18 hours a day, an adult requires 7-8
hours a day. Similarly, school going children and teens are recommended to sleep
for at least 9-10 hours a day. The number of hours also depends on individual
requirements and labour. If you sleep more than 8 hours a day and still don't feel
rested, you should consult your doctor. Some people sleep more on their days off
at work, which affects their sleeping pattern. This can upset body's sleep-wake
rhythm. Sleeping is as important as staying awake.
All about Retinoblastoma
Dr. Sarvesh Tiwari
World Retinoblastoma awareness week is being
celebrated worldwide. India being home to one of the
largest population of kids suffering from this cancer, it
is imperative that awareness be created regarding this
tumour which comprises 3% of all cancers occurring in children younger than 15
years.
Retinoblastoma is a cancerous tumour of the Retina, the light sensitive
layer of the eye that captures and sends images to the brain. It is the most
common type of eye cancer in children affecting 1 in 15,000 to 1 in 18,000 live
births. Studies from India show a two- to three-fold higher incidence of tumours
of the eye (majority of which will be retinoblastoma in children <15 years of age).
Also, while over 95% children with retinoblastoma survive in the developed
world, only 50% of children with retinoblastoma do so in developing countries
due to a delay in presentation and consequently, a greater number of cases with
the tumour spreading outside the eye.. Untreated, retinoblastoma is almost
always fatal; therefore, early diagnosis and treatment is critical in saving lives
and preserving visual function.
What is the cause?
During the early stages of Retinal development in the womb, cells called
retinoblasts that divide into new cells, stop dividing at a point and develop into
mature retinal cells. However if this process goes haywire, instead of maturing
into special cells, some retinoblasts continue to divide and grow out of control,
forming retinoblastoma. There is a genetic component to retinoblastoma.
Children born with a mutation in the RB1 gene usually develop retinoblastoma in
both eyes (known as bilateral retinoblastoma), and there are often several
tumours within the eye (known as multifocal retinoblastoma). It also usually
occurs at a younger age than kids without the mutation and affect 30% of the
kids with the condition. This is called hereditary retinoblastoma. The remainder
70% of kids who develop the condition have no family history of the disease, and
will usually get it in just one eye, with much less risk of developing
retinoblastoma in the other eye. This is called unilateral retinoblastoma.
How Can I Tell If My Child Has Retinoblastoma?
The diagnosis of retinoblastoma is usually made after signs of the disease are
noted by the parents or paediatricians. Parents often notice A cloudy white pupil,
which might look silvery white or yellow in bright light, is often the first sign of
retinoblastoma seen in around 60% of patients. This is called leukocoria, or "cat's
eye reflex.
Other characteristic symptoms which should not escape attention include
•
Crossed eyes or "wandering" eye, known as strabismus
•
Decreased vision in either or both of the eye
•
Different-colored irises in both eyes
•
Pupil appearing large in size or reddish in colour with eye pain
Many of these signs are common side effects of other eye conditions, and
may not necessarily indicate retinoblastoma, however it is always safe to
promptly consult an Ophthalmologist in case you notice any of the above signs.
Besides eye imaging other tests like CT scan, MRI, Bone scan ultrasound may
be required to detect the spread of the tumour.
Is Retinoblastoma treatable?
Retinoblastoma detected at an early stage has very good cure rates.
Retinoblastoma is a very chemotherapy sensitive tumour, and which is now being
used as the first line therapy for children with this malignancy. Chemotherapy can
be given to the children via intravenous, intra-arterial or by an injection directly
into the eye. Apart from Chemotherapy radiation therapy cryotherapy and
Photocoagulation therapy are also used in the management of retinoblastoma.
Overall, more than 9 in 10 children with retinoblastoma are cured. The chances
of long-term survival are much better if the tumour has not spread outside the
eye.

Volvo XC90
redefines Luxury SUV
Mumbai Messenger Correspondent
ANDHERI: Months of speculation ended on May 12 after
Volvo Auto India revealed its all new Volvo XC90, delivering
on its promise to introduce a visually striking, premium
quality seven-seat SUV with world leading safety features,
new powertrain technologies, an unrivalled combination of
power and fuel efficiency and a superlative interior finish.
The new XC90 will be available in D5 Inscription and
Momentum trims, 2.0L cylinder, automatic 8-speed AWD
with 225HP and a whopping 470Nm torque. Priced at 77.9
lacs (Ex-showroom, Mumbai without Octroi) for Inscription
and at Rs.64.9 lacs (Ex-showroom, Mumbai without Octroi)
for Momentum, the Volvo New XC90 can be pre-ordered.
Tomas Ernberg, Managing Director, Volvo Auto India
said, “The wait is finally over now. With the all-new Volvo
XC90, we are not just launching a car, but re-launching our
brand. An example of Volvo-by-Volvo, the new XC90 marks
the beginning of a new chapter for Volvo cars, capturing its
future design direction, incorporating its own range of new
technologies and utilising its new Scalable Product
Architecture (SPA). The XC90 paves the way for a portfolio
of exciting cars to come in the following years. Truly
Scandinavian in its body and spirit, the new XC90 comes
with the Volvo badge of world-class safety assurance. The
exterior and interior carries a strong connection with the
key elements of the Swedish lifestyle: the generous space,
the celebration of light and the focus on well being.”
Why social sharing is
important for Business?
Mumbai Messenger Correspondent
Unless you've been living under a rock for the last several
years you know that social media has exploded onto the
digital landscape. According to a company who ranks
web traffic, three of the top ten most globally visited sites
are social. Topping the list are Facebook, Twitter and
LinkedIn, with the social video-sharing platform You
Tube in the mix as well. The rest of the list is comprised of
search engines and Wikipedia. Social media is great for
marketers, but why should you and your employees be
using social media?
Brand building: One of the top reasons for getting
involved in social media is a selfish one. Just like the
company you own or work for, you have abrand of your
own, a personal brand.
Building your personal brand is additive to your
current company's brand and demonstrates your
knowledge and strength to future companies, not to
mention the opportunities that can be created by
developing your network. Creating a dialog around topics
you're interested in and sharing content related to those
topics can help you to gain a following as a thought leader.
Additionally, employers are increasingly looking to social
media as part of the vetting process for potential new
hires. Developing a strong personal brand can add
credibility to your experience.
Impact For Your Company: As the search engine
landscape constantly changes and engine algorithms are
continuously refined, one signal is clear: user engagement
is of the highest value. Sharing more of your company's
content means more visits, engagement, and link-sharing
from others in your network. As you share more, the
domino effect ensues. You share more, then your network
will share more, assuming you are spreading relevant
content. If you can get your network's network to share,
that's how content goes viral- the gold medal of content
sharing. Think of it like a chain letter, one letter forwarded
on to ten people and the numbers start to grow
exponentially. Sharing creates links, clicks, visits, brand
impressions and engagement, all of which lead to a
positive impact for your company.
Ice Breaker For Sales: If you're in the sales business
(and aren't we all really?) social sharing and network
building can also bring some unexpected surprises your
way. Social channels are a great way to connect with your
prospects and research their needs. If they're asking their
networks for recommendations on a product or service,
you can send them a link to help in their search and begin
to build that trust and rapport. Once you've engaged with
them, they may see something you post or share,
reminding them to reach back out to you or start up an ice
breaking dialog that will lead to you a closing sale.
Some Tips To Get Started:
• Don't try to be everywhere. LinkedIn is the best place
for business connections, followed by Twitter. Facebook
is often more about friends than business contacts, but I'll
bet your Facebook friends are involved in some level of
business and are interested in related topics too. Start with
those top three and later you can move on to others.
• Don't just spam out link after link. You need to
establish yourself as an authority on a topic of interest and
bring a human element to your posts. One of the best
things about Twitter is that you can send an "@" message
to anyone. Start up a conversation with someone else of
influence. Retweet and share the posts of those you
follow, and respond back to them.
• Finally, make social media a habit. You don't need to
invest a ton of time, so start with 15 minutes a day. On
LinkedIn, people are most active at the start and end of the
workday. Conversely, on Twitter, the best time to create
reach is between 1:00 to 3:00 PM.

HOROSCOPE
PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar
20): Incidental expenses
and disharmony in
personal life may bother you. To
add fuel to the fire, planetary
movements could block the inflow
of money for you. Hence, you are
likely to be in a tight spot
monetarily. Business-people may
get a nice chance to strike a
lucrative deal, but they too may
get only apart of their payment.
ARIES (March 21 to April
20): A close person's
indifference may put you
in a bad mood, as the week begins.
Learn to let go of such issues, as
they usually tend to be temporary.
However, if conflicts with spouse
seem to be going out of control, sit
down and try talking it out.
Communication may be more
aggressive than usual, towards the
weekend.
TAURUS (Apr 20 – May
20): Career-related issues
are likely to remain your
main concern. If you are in a job,
you may be entrusted with some
important assignment, thanks to
your impeccable record. Relations
with friends shall improve. They
may lend a helping hand to
support your actions. Remain
cautious regarding money
matters, as sudden expenses
could lead to a financial crunch.
GEMINI (May 21 – Jun
20) : The positive
influence of benevolent
Jupiter will enable you to get
through the tough times, also
inspiring you to work harder.
Besides, your boss or seniors may
now pat you on the back for your
sincere efforts. You shall feel
relieved on the personal front, and
will get to spend a pleasant time
with your near and dear ones.
CANCER (Jun 21 – Jul
22): You shall now be able
to cast off your
discontentment and give top
priority to your work, due to the
positive influence of Jupiter. Be
happy, this is the right time to
change your job, as the luck is on
your side. Post mid-week may not
be good news for business gains.
However, ones dealing with
overseas customers stand to gain.
LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22):
Health of your spouse or a
loved one may decline,
during this week. In case of
conflicts, do consider others'
viewpoints, and remain composed.
The optimistic orientation and
guidance of your seniors shall
simplify your tasks. Freelancers
can look forward to receive ample
work. This is also the right time for
those in a love relationship.
VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sep
22): Employed ones may
face some difficulties.
Reluctant to interact frankly with
anyone, you may seek solitude.
Some problems on the marital
front could also bother you around
the mid-week. You may face minor
health problems. Businesspersons,
though, shall be relatively happy
due to rise in sales, yet the profit
margins may remain thin
LIBRA (Sep 23 – Oct 22):
There is a possibility of
getting injured
accidentally. Planetary position
could also lead to tough times on
the career front. You should
ponder to find the key to solutions
to your problems. Freelancers
might face a hard time, though,
due to fre que nt change s
demanded by their finicky clients.
Financially, you will need to take
care.
SCORPIO (Oct 23 – Nov
21): You shall now give
top priority to your
domestic sphere, spending more
t i m e i n r e fu r b i s h i n g a n d
redecorating your residence.
Employed ones shall now be able
to put up an excellent
performance. You may also
manage to shoulder higher
responsibility. Businesspersons
shall be happy to receive orders
from renowned companies.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22
– Dec 21): You must
control your temper, and
refrain from entering into any
controversy. Your mood may
remain somewhat foul on more
than one occasion. You may find it
tough to maintain your position or
congenial atmosphere at the
professional as well as personal
front. Employed ones might have
to work strenuously to complete
tasks.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22 –
Jan 19):Domestic and
monetary issues may
remain your major area of focus.
Your family requirements may
increase, and you may end up
spending a part of your savings to
keep a loved one in good humour.
Try not to stress much, as this will
be a passing phase. Set aside
sufficient amount of money for
unforeseen expenses in your
budget.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20 –
Feb 18) : You may revert
to your inherent attribute
of remaining aloof, rebellious and
autonomous. You shall also try to
forget all the unpleasant
experiences of the past, and have
a strong desire to search a quiet
place, to get inner peace and
restore tranquillity in your life.
Employed ones may now be
inclined to look for a better job.
