Elizabethan Times - Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire
Volume 28, 2013
Celebrating the Pennsylvania
Renaissance Faire's 33rd Anniversary!
The Pyrates Invade!
The year is 1588 and Mount Hope is once again welcoming Her Most Royal Majesty, Elizabeth Regina
Glorianna to Her favorite Shire! All is in readiness for Her Majesty as the village has prepared a wondrous
celebration in Her honor. Musicians, shopkeepers, jugglers, comedians, singers and villagers… all are in
readiness to greet the Queen.
But even as things in England are well, outside its borders
there is upheaval. In Ireland there is daily insurrection and
attacks. No ship or outpost is left untouched. Led by Red Hugh
O'Donnell the Irish Rebellion is growing by the minute.
England's Governor in Ireland, Sir Richard
Bingham captures Red Hugh during a battle and
brings him to England as a "gift" for the Queen.
The Queen is certainly pleased that the rebellion
has lost its leader.
Not everyone is pleased by Red Hugh's capture. The
Irish Pirate Queen, Grace O'Malley is on her way
to free him and bring him back to Ireland.
And nothing or no one will stand in her way.
Magical Merriment Parade – Join villagers, merchants and nobles as
we gather to escort Her Majesty in grand procession to the Human Chess Match.
Nippers are encouraged to come and lead the Queen in this parade guaranteed
to stop everyone in their tracks to watch as the
music makers, flags, floats and giant puppets
pass by. Come one, come all and experience
the fun of a Royal Parade! Parade will form at
3:40PM below Sir Jacob’s Garden.

Finale In Song – Join the Queen, Nobility,
Pyrates and Villagers as they come
together to revel in the day's festivities.
You will laugh, dance, sing and clap along
to the music and merriment that marks a
fond farewell to the day. There may even
be some surprises at this unforgettable
conclusion to a glorious day!
Storyline Shows
Stage Shows
Queen's Court – The day begins with
pomp and glorious fanfare as Her
Majesy, Queen Elizabeth I is welcomed
to the Shire of Mount Hope. But there
are pyrates afoot as Grace O'Malley
makes an appearance!
Whose Jest is it Anyway? – The Haves and
the Have Nots face each other in a noholds-barred, laugh-filled improvisational
comedy show. Bring your suggestions as
these village jokesters are prepared to
put them to good use. No two shows are
ever the same… thankfully!
Human Chess – Her Majesty, Queen
Elizabeth and the Pyrate Queen, Grace
O'Malley square off in this "friendly"
game of Chess. The stakes are high as
these two powerful ladies vie for control
of the game. Cheer as the characters take
up arms on the life-sized Chessboard and
defend their squares.
Pub Sing – Village musicians gather for
an informal musical get together that you
should not miss. Your favorites pop in for
a song or two as Demetrius the Minstrel,
Rowan and the Rose and a cavalcade of
others will tickle your musical fancy. Grab
an ale and sing along.
Combat Joust – Irish and English meet on
Bosworth Field to determine which Knight
will ride for their side as this competition
turns "explosive." Lances and shields,
swords and explosions… all will play a part
in this stunt spectacular. Come and cheer
on your favorite as they meet head-to-head.
Scallywags – The Faire's newest
sensation, the Scallywags, will have you
singing like a pyrate quicker than you
can say… "AARRGH!" These lovely lasses
of the high seas are bound to steal your
heart and treasure as they sing about life
on the wild ocean.
Ultimate Joust – Your heart will beat
faster as the horses and their riders
increase speed to meet in a spectacular
clash of metal and wood. The crowd
roars… Experience for yourself the most
wondrous of all spectacles! 'Tis something
you must see to believe!
*Rakish Rogues – Five rowdy men. Daring
songs. More merriment and laughter than
you can shake a stick at. Two completely
different shows for your entertainment
pleasure. See them both. You'll be glad
you did!
*Rakish Rogues and Sultry Sirens of Sin –
Need we say more? Very well, we will. Join
these two musical powerhouses as they
band together to bring their unique songs
and bawdy humor to all. Ask anyone, they
are a must-see!
*Sultry Sirens of Sin – These four bawdy
wenches will tickle your funny bone as
they sing about the lusty aspects of life
and relationships. Join the "ladies" for
two different shows today. You'll find
yourself singing along.
* Trial & Drench – Join Sir Francis
Walsingham and Sheriff Sir Justin Agonni
as they dish out their own brand of liquid
4
punishment to those that deserve and
perhaps those that do not. Comedy,
bawdiness and water make for an
uproarious time.
Shakespeare's Lovers – Ahh, love is
in the air… and on stage as some of
Shakespeare's most sweet and charming
love scenes are brought to life by the
villagers. Come and bask in the charming
glow of eternal love brought to you only
as the Bard can!
Bloody Best – Julius Caesar – It's back
by popular demand. One of the Faire's
favorite shows has returned in all its
glory. This year, Julius Caesar is skewered
as only the Faire can. Every drop of this
show will be shed for you, the audience,
so catch it today!
Mayor, May Not – Join Mayor Penburthy
and former Mayor Coddington as they
host a live advice column, ranging from
leadership to love, towne hall style.
Children's Shows
The Princess Fiona and the Dwarf –
The children of the Shire can expect a
wonderful tale of true love in this old Irish
fairy tale brought to life by the villagers.
Come and be a part of the magic!
The Royal Jester's Show – Have you
ever wondered what it would be like to
be the life of the party? Or to be called
upon to make a Queen laugh? Learn all
about the skills from the Queen's Jester,
Whipoorwill, herself!
The Super Fairy Tale Players – present
"The Case of the Mind Eraser" today.
Join in on the merriment as only the
Renaissance Faire can do, with this
original audience participation fairy tale.
Your children will love to see and hear this
story unfold… and you will too!
The Queen's Royal
Performers
Archery through the Ages - Bringing the
history of archery and its world-wide
appplication to life. We demonstrate not
only how English long bows and wood arrows
are made, but how and why they were such
effective tools and weapons of war.
Barby Holder - Traditional and original
songs and instrumental music—vocals,
guitar and hammered dulcimer.
Burly Minstrels - From wild instrumental
improvisation on medieval themes to
sweet traditional ballads, their music
leaves your toes tapping and makes you
want to sing along.
Circa Paleo - Embracing rhythms and
melodies that breach the boundaries of
region and era, Circa Paleo draws upon
varied global influences to bring unlikely
musical combinations to the here and now.
Circus Vagabonds - An exciting new age
circus troupe specializing in a variety of
skills including acrobatics, fire-eating,
stilt-walking, partner-balancing, live
music and interactive comedy/clowning.
Doc Volz - A comedic hypnotist, Doc Volz
brings an alternative asthetic-inspired
show featuring magical inventions with
steampunk-style experiments and machinery that inspires laughter and wonder.
Don Juan & Miguel - Don Juan, the gallant
and romantic Prince of Spain and his
ever faithful manservant Miguel bring a
rare blend of improvisation and variety
skills together to create one of the most
popular festival shows.
* Duo of Woo - Brodie and Schmitty
MacManly are the latest brothers from
the MacManly Clan, a family of Sword
Masters and Woo Masters Extraordinaire!
Come watch and learn from these two
Scottish brothers as they continue the
MacManly family tradition of wooing
the ladies and teaching the men how to
master their swords… and their swords!
Empty Hats - This band is full of energy
and will knock your socks off with
hilarious banter, amazing music, endless
talent and high spirits.
Fool Hearty - Family-oriented but funny
for people of all ages. Beautifully costumed
with well developed characters, they are
both a great photo opportunity and a
memorable experience for everyone!
Giacomo the Jester - Giacomo the Jester grew
up learning the trades of both his parents:
the arts of sorcery, juggling, ropewalking and
storytelling in music and song.
Harper Lee - Her Majesty’s Harper, MaryKate Lee, can be found throughout the
Shire playing Celtic, Traditional and
original music for all who pass her way.
* Looney Lucy & Ploppy - Looney Lucy
& Ploppy have three, count 'em three,
X-rated (that's a ten for the little nippers)
comedy shows. These shows are steeped
in double entendre and linger with odors
of innuendo.
Mad Mechanicals - It's like Shakespeare,
only entertaining! This zany acting
troupe takes the famous plays of William
Shakespeare and… tweaks them. Rubber
chickens give new life to the Bard's classics.
The Mud Squad - Three shows, three
completely different stories and three
idiots in the mud! “Splash Zone” seats
optional at the raucous shows that prove
children should stay in school!
Neidfyre - Neidfyre serenades on a fiddle,
singing with a genuine passion, Scottish,
Irish, English and Russian folk songs. She
infuses vivacity and sheer joy into her
love of music.
Noble Cause Productions - Specializing in
jousting, stage combat instruction, fight
choreography and horse stunts. Noble
Cause is continually striving to reach new
heights with breath-taking new shows!
Paolo Garbanzo - Paolo Garbanzo dazzles
audiences with a juggling and fire-eating
show not to be missed, performing
amazing stunts while keeping the
audience laughing throughout the show.
Pastimes - A Medieval/Renaissance
music consort, exploring and performing
music and dance from the Middle Ages
to the Renaissance on authentic period
instruments and in historical costume.
Righteous Blackguards - Righteous
Blackguards
irreverently
perform
traditional Celtic Classics, Sea Shanties
and even some modern hits.
Rowan and the Rose - Join Rowan the
Bard and Rose McGann as they sing songs
of adventure and love, songs of the tavern
and songs of "those really interesting bits
of history that you never learn in school."
Royal Falconer - Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire’s Royal Falconer, Ash Cary
will be on hand at the Aviary next to
Endgame Stage displaying his majestic
birds of prey including falcons, an Eagle
Owl and more.
Sir Isaac Fawlkes - Not your usual idea
of a magician. He combines outrageous
comedy and unusual magic to create a
hysterical show that leaves audiences in
tears of laughter.
Tartanic - Imagine one dancer, six drums,
six drones, 18 notes, fast fingers, high
comedy, flying bagpipes, death-defying
stunts and scorching hot music played at
over 120 beats per minute with driving
speed and high-volume—all brought to
you by five men without pants.
Tilda Morning - This violinist can be
found throughout the Shire using her
musical powers during Peasant Dance or
separately serenading you on the streets!

A Symbol of the Shire Because so many of our honored guests attend the Faire in
costume, we have a tradition of adorning our cast with a Queen's Favor so they may easily be identified.

13 Glorious Weekends…
So Many Reasons To Return
The Grande Arrival!
Aug 3-4 • Join the Shirefolk and our
beloved Majesty, Queen Elizabeth
Regina Glorianna, as we swing wide
the Castle Gates and kick off our 33rd
glorious season of the Pennsylvania
Renaissance Faire.
Time Travelers
Aug 10-11 • The soothsayers have forseen a
chronological convergence of time travelers, doctors,
treckers of stars, the steam-punkified, slayers and
many more of the fictions of science as they gather
upon the Shire of Mount Hope.
Chivalry &
Romance
Aug 17-18 • Dedicated to
the romantics of all ages!
Knights and Rogues, Ladies
and Wenches, even Queen
Elizabeth are all in the mood to woo and be wooed.
Perhaps you will find your love here upon the Shire…
Pyrate Invasion
Aug 24-25 • There comes a time in most men's lives
where they feel the heed to raise the Black Flag. Let
out a hearty "ARR" and allow your inner pyrate to
set sail for the Shire of Mount Hope.
Children's Fantasy
August 31, September 1-2 • Her Majesty proclaims a
3-day Faire weekend dedicated to Her biggest fans, the
nipperkins! Three full days of 16th Century fun and
frivolity for kids of all ages. Bring your child and the
child inside and have a day of play.
Heroes of the Realm
Sept 7-8 • Her Majesty honors all active
military, reserve, police, firefighters, emergency
medical technicians, members of veteran
organizations and their immediate families with
a special admission price with valid service ID.
14
Pyrates Return
Sept 14-15 • The Shire is
swarming with rascals and rogues
as Pyrates return to share salty sea
tales. With treasure hunts and pyrates
gold to plunder your little sailor might
get hooked on the Pyrates' Life!
Scottish & Irish
Sept 21-22 • Share in the Celtic pride
of pipers, Highland games, Scottish
wares and foods, music and Highland
dancing, sheepherding and lots o'
those bonnie lasses and kilt-clad
boyos!
Oktoberfest
Sept 28-29 • Raise a stein to
German heritage with micro-brewed ales from the
Faire's very own Swashbuckler Pub, the authentic food
and dance of the Germanic nations… and don't forget
your lederhosen!
Wine Harvest
Oct 5-6 • Celebrate the time-honored tradition
of the wine harvest, commemorating the first
step toward the finished bottle. Free sampling
at Bacchus' Retreat will serve to help you
discover your favorite!
Halloween Daze &
Spooky Knights
Oct 12-13, 19-20, 26-27 • Three weekends of
mystery and mayhem as spooky creatures of
every variety haunt the Shire. Join the good
Shirefolk of Mount Hope for a grand All
Hallow's Eve celebration—complete with tricks
and treats for children of all ages. Dress in your
favorite costume for fun and prizes!
