Merry Month of May
In Northern climes,
the month of May has long been associated with winter’s end.
Our relief at the sun’s return, relief from indoor confinement,
the gift of a blooming branch, profound longing, and the budding of love
are all traditionally linked to May in our collective consciousness.
And all are featured in the music that we bring to you in this concert.
In this choral recital, folk songs and folk-like songs predominate.
Whether traditional or by known composers, their musical simplicity
not only lends strength to to the seasonal poetry,
but also represents the newness of the season’s gifts.
You’ll also hear madrigals and part-songs from four centuries,
as we join the generations that have welcomed spring with song.
After our especially long winter of 2008,
we invite you to anticipate with us the pleasures of the coming season.

We rehearse Monday nights at Moscow High School in Moscow, Idaho from
the end of August through the first week of May.

This concert
marks the end of our five years with Dr. John
Weiss as IWCC’s Music Director and Principal
Conductor. John first came to us in the spring of 2003, conducting our
rehearsals and May concert as part of his audition. His dedication to quality
music production earned him the offer to serve the Idaho Washington Concert
Chorale in the capacity he now exits.
To say that John is unique is an understatement. From the beginning John
has challenged us with new and unusual approaches, taking us further on
our journey toward excellence. For those of us who have had the pleasure
of listening, the “proof is in the pudding” as John likes to say. More beautiful
pianissimos, higher quality fortes, greater attention to musical detail, and more
consistent production of quality performances can all be heard in the results.
We asked John to give us more difficult repertoire, so he did. In turn, he
challenged us to increase our level of excellence when doing easier repertoire.
We endeavored to meet his expectations. All of these experiences are unique to
our time under John’s direction.
One of John’s favorite subjects is how wonderfully the chorale has grown in its
ability to make beautiful sounds compared to five years ago. It is obvious that he
is proud of this accomplishment. We are too, John, and we thank you for your
hard work and dedication. We thank you for sharing all of your uniqueness with
us. We are better for it.
May the road rise to meet you, John. May your travels be filled with success and fond
memories of our journey together. Our sincerest gratitude goes with you,

John Weiss, Conductor
Currently
assistant professor of music at Washington State University,
John Weiss earned a Bachelor of Music degree in music
education at Boston University’s School for the Arts, a Master of Fine Arts
degree in choral conducting at the University of California, Irvine, and a Doctor
of Musical Arts degree in choral conducting from the University of Arizona.
Past choral groups under his direction have won numerous first prizes at
state, regional and national competitions. He has been a guest clinician and
conductor at MENC regional and state conferences in Massachusetts, Vermont,
and Oregon, and choral director for North American Music Ensembles’ 1991
European tour.
As a bass, Dr. Weiss was a Metropolitan Opera Regional Finalist and won First
Prize in the Associazione Lirica Italo-Americana Mario Del Monaco Voice
Competition. He has performed leading and supporting roles with Boston Lyric
Opera, Indianapolis Opera, Ash Lawn-Highland Summer Festival, Raylynmor
Opera, Commonwealth Opera, Longwood Opera, Vermont Opera, Oakland
Opera, and Sacramento Opera, and also soloed for such organizations as the
Harvard-Radcliffe Chorus, College of the Holy Cross Choirs, and the Oakland
Chamber Orchestra and Oratorio Society. Some of his favorite roles include
Leporello in Don Giovanni, Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof, Mustafa in L’italiana
in Algeri, Alfie Doolittle in My Fair Lady, Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte, Colline
in La Bohéme, Bartolo in Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Sir Joseph Porter in H.M.S.
Pinafore. In May 2005, he sang the role of Sparafucile in Rigoletto with Granite
State Opera in New Hampshire. Dr. Weiss presented a recital at WSU on January 16, 2007, and performed the same program
in Chattanooga, Tennessee and Mobile, Alabama.
The University of Arizona nominated Dr. Weiss’ doctoral research, Operatically Trained Singers in the Collegiate Choral Rehearsal,
for the Julius Herford Award sponsored by the American Choral Directors Association. An article based on this research
appeared in The Choral Journal, August 2002 and he presented his findings at the Second International Physiology and
Acoustics of Singing Conference in Denver in October 2004. Last spring he presented the same research at the Washington
Music Educators Assoc. State Conference in Yakima, and at the American Choral Directors Association NW Division
Convention in Portland.
Elena Panchenko, Accompanist
originally from Ukraine, studied
Elena
Panchenko,
at the Moscow Conservatory,
where she earned her degree in piano performance, music
history and music theory. She served as the Musical Director of
the Penn State Opera for four years and performed the debut
of two new operas, including Mrs. Satan, an opera about the life
of the first woman presidential candidate, Victoria Woodhall.
Working extensively as an accompanist and church musician,
Elena has performed with groups as varied as a children’s dance
group to such well-know musicians as Francis Orval and David
Shifrin, clarinetist and Music Director of Chamber Music at
Lincoln Center. In addition to Elena’s duties with the chorale,
she is also the Music Director at St. James’ Episcopal Church
in Pullman. Elena’s family includes her husband, Alex, WSU
Math Professor and former Ukrainian rock star (as is Elena);
her son Ivan, a student at UW; and their dog, Tasha.

Chorale Member Profile
(Soprano I) has
been singing as
long as she can remember, first with her family and then with a children’s choir
school in her hometown of Glens Falls, New York. It is a passion that she has
continued personally and professionally throughout her life. As a student at
Bard College, Paula was drawn to major in voice by the folk movement of the
1960s, which in turn led her to early ballads and Renaissance part singing.
These remain among her favorite musical styles (though she also confesses a love
of Baroque coloratura solo music, saying “There can never be too many notes!”)
Paula earned a library degree at Syracuse University, followed by a second
master’s degree in theatre at Kansas State University. While at Kansas State,
she performed with a madrigal group and also worked as a music librarian.
Paula moved to Pullman in 1984 and, until her retirement this past December,
was the music subject specialist for the WSU libraries; professionally, Paula
has also been a very active member of the national Music Library Association.
During the 1990s she earned another master’s degree in music history from the
University of Idaho. In her 24 years in Pullman Paula has sung with The Gentle
Season madrigal group, the Carliol Consort, Tapestry, the WSU Madrigal
Singers, the NW Bach Festival, WSU faculty chamber ensembles, and has
done extensive solo work—in addition to singing with the Chorale. The Chorale
and our audiences have also benefited from Paula’s insightful program notes
in the past two seasons. Since 2005, Paula has added to her understanding of
Renaissance sacred music by participating in the Tallis Scholars Summer School. This May Paula and her husband Paul Brians,
himself a strong advocate and supporter of arts in the Palouse, will be moving to Bainbridge Island, where Paula plans to continue
singing with local groups. The Chorale wishes them both well in their move and knows that Bainbridge Island will be the richer for
their contributions to the music and art of their new community!
