The apple tree becomes an allegorical symbol for the presence of Christ, surpassing anything in the natural realm. Michael Praetorius published most of his works between 1616 and 1625 in Hamburg as a fivevolume collected edition. He wrote masses, magnificats, motets and some organ music. Psallite (a translation of the Latin is in this program) is a traditional “macaronic” piece – that is, it contains two languages, Latin and English (the original “other” language being German). It exudes the great joy of the baby in the manger. A Babe is Born was composed by William Mathias (b. 1934). The musical and literary heritage of Wales has contributed substantially to Mathias’s development as a composer. His works include orchestral, choral, chamber, and vocal music. The present work also uses the “macaronic” approach (see Psallite, above). Translations of the Latin used in this piece are included in the program. The Magnificat has been attributed both to Francesco Durante and to his teacher, Giovanni Pergolesi, both being contemporaries of Johann Sebastian Bach. But no matter who receives the credit, the work is a splendid encapsulation of the Baroque spirit. In less than twenty minutes, one hears grand choruses, finely crafted solos, and spirited string writing. It is a goal of this performance to create an historically accurate rendition, while at the same time, demonstrating Our Business Supporters the work’s wonderful zest and joy. All the string players are either students or residents of the Palouse region. You will find translations of the Latin text (Luke 1:46-55) in this program. Child in a Manger, Donkey Carol, King Jesus Hath a Garden, and Jesus Child were composed by John Rutter (b. 1945). His compositional career has embraced both large and small choral works, two children’s operas, and music for television. He has written for such groups as the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble and the King’s Singers. His Requiem (1985) and Magnificat (1990) have been performed many times around the world, and numerous recordings of his music are available. Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day by John Gardner (b. 1917) was published in 1966. Because of changing meters within the work, it takes on a spirited forward motion and reveals a delightful choral setting of this familiar Christmas text. Decagon Devices, Inc. We measure the World! The arts are part of our community and our lives. Decagon is pleased to support the Chorale during it’s third season. We wish you success in all your performances. DECAGON DEVICES, INC. Pullman, Washington USA 509.332.2756 www.decagon.com Birthday Carol by David Willcocks uses traditional Christmas texts from the second chapter of Luke’s Gospel. You will recognize references to the shepherds, the angel hosts and the babe in swaddling clothes. It is also our final example of a “macaronic” text— Latin and English with the familiar, “Gloria in excelsis, Deo! “(Glory to God in the highest). We hope your spirits have been lifted this evening and that you have a safe and memorable holiday. Thank you for coming.
