Neighborhood Council Newsletter FEBRUARY, 2015 ResedaCouncil.org Facebook.com/RNC.FB DRIVEN BY NANCY SWEENEY’S MEMORY, RELAY FOR LIFE IN RESEDA 2015 PLANNING KICKS OFF As a community, cancer has had a profound impact on Reseda. Losing Nancy Sweeney to the terrible disease has been a difficult loss for the neighborhood, particularly in light of her strong leadership in growing what has become Reseda’s largest annual community event. Relay for Life returns this year to Cleveland High School on Saturday June 6, 2015. The Event Leadership Team assembled for the first time this month noting that this year’s Relay takes on even greater significance and the goals to raise funds and awareness have been escalated. Team sign-ups are now open! Any business, block, organization or any other collaboration of individuals are encouraged to get started now. To ART GALLERY OPENS ON SHERMAN WAY start your team just go to RelayForLife.org and type in Reseda or 91335 in the event finder and follow the prompts. Or, email this year’s event chair Adrian Noll at ResedaRelay@gmail.com UPTICK OF PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT CONTINUES THROUGHOUT RESEDA As Reseda revitalization escalates, Reseda NC Planning and Land Use Committee (PLUM) provides another opportunity for our community to weigh in on some of the proposals at a meeting held on Thursday February 26th, in the Ann Kinzle Room, West Valley Police Station. For consideration are a senior center development proposed for 6724 Amigo Ave., a new restaurant at 18434 Vanowen St. plus a request from 7-11 to allow liquor sales at two locations, converting the oil and lube next to the Post Office to a Car Wash. 11:11 A Creative Collective, the ‘Best Arts Organization in the Valley’ (according to LA Weekly) moves into a new location and continues the streak of professionally curated, boundary pushing visual arts exhibits at their new Traveling Gallery at 18343 Sherman Way in Reseda, Ca. The new location's grand opening exhibit began February 7th from 7-11pm, featuring over 100 local artists who have created artwork inspired by the San Fernando Valley skateboard culture and artwork on skate decks. This collaboration show between 11:11 ACC and skate apparel company, Val Jerks - based out of Canoga Park, is supported by the Reseda Renaissance, an arts activism group and sponsored by 818 Brewing, Canoga Park, who will be providing their most popular 4 styles of craft beer brewsproceeds benefitting 11:11 ACC. ‘Gracias Por Nada - The SFV skate Culture’ features over 200 pieces of artwork including painted skateboards, sculptures highlighting the valley’s best skateboard spots, and artwork for and by participants in the skateboard culture. With participation by many of the valley’s best tattoo artists, professional skateboarders, and some of SFV’s top emerging artists, ‘Gracias Por Nada’ is a reaction to the fact that the Valley skate scene never quite got the attention that our over-the-hill counterparts have. To them we say, “Thanks for nothing!” Presented by the burgeoning Art Collective, the traveling gallery features an exclusive selection of art retail as well as expertly curated art installations and exhibits. The Reseda traveling gallery has become an alternative art space and venue which hosts regular music events and concerts, open mic and poetry readings, workshops, classes and sketch drawing events as well as a local hub for artists and art lovers to convene, collaborate and create. Regular business hours are Friday & Saturday 1-9pm and Sunday 1-7pm with extended hours for special events. The Gallery will also play host to the Reseda Fun-A-Day show to launch in March. More information at www.ResedaRenaissance.com 11:11’s vision is to help the San Fernando Valley become a strong and independent artistic community that will develop as a thriving and accessible destination for those seeking an innovative and unique culturally enriching experience. This is a great chance NURSING SCHOOL The Annenberg School of Nursing is now accepting applications for all three of its nursing programs: vocational nurse, nurse assistant, and home health aide. The vocational nurse (VN) program is designed to prepare students for the NCLEX-PN® licensing examination. The 12-month, full-time program includes classroom and skills lab instruction as well as clinical training at local hospitals and other sites. The program is approved by the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT) and accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). Beginning in October, ASN will host Open House events to provide comprehensive information about the VN program. The next Open Houses are scheduled for February 3rd and February 17th. Classes start April 2015. The 22-day nurse assistant (NA) program focuses on all aspects of patient care. The program is designed to prepare students for passage of a state certification examination. The home health aide (HHA) program trains students to help people who are elderly, disabled, chronically ill, or cognitively impaired. Home health aides assist with activities such as bathing and dressing, and provide other services, such as light housekeeping. The five day (40 hours) program will meet Monday through Friday from 6:45 am to 3:15 pm. Enrollment for ASN’s nurse assistant and home health aide programs are ongoing. The Annenberg School of Nursing is a program of the Los Angeles Jewish Home and is located on the Home’s Hirsch Family Campus in Reseda. All programs feature small class size and low tuition. Interest-free deferred loans are available for those who qualify in the vocational nurse and nurse assistant programs. In addition, financial aid is available to those who qualify. For more information about programs at the Annenberg School of Nursing, please contact Cindy Thomas at 818-757-4431 or visit our website at www.asn.edu. KEEPING UP WITH RESEDA NEWS ON THE INTERNET In this day and age, more and more stakeholders are getting their news from social media as opposed to sitting down and enjoying a printed newspaper or newsletter. In keeping with that trend, this newsletter is now ava il ab l e t o b e r e ad on li ne at www.resedacouncil.org by clicking on either the English or Spanish Newsletter link. For more frequent news our weekly newsblast is available by email. Not to mention a calendar section that lets you know about local meetings and events so that you can attend. Join us on Facebook at facebook.com/RNC.FB Another way to keep connected in the neighborhood is to sign up on NextDoor.com and sharing important information with the people who live in your immediate neighborhood. A well-connected community is a safer community. Keep in touch! BUSINESS SHOPRESEDA ENTERS 4TH YEAR We established the SHOPRESEDA Card on Shop Small Saturday in 2011. The purpose was to encourage Reseda Stakeholders to spend a good portion of their shopping monies at the many small businesses that populate the Reseda Community. In addition, when you spend your money in Reseda, a good portion of it stays here or is returned to the community (approximately 45 cents of each dollar) while spending it elsewhere allows that money to go elsewhere. Go into any store in Reseda and show your SHOPRESEDA Card and ask if they honor it with a discount. More than 200 do. You can find out which ones at www.resedacouncil.org.
