Healthy Living with Anne McKinney Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection & Prevention Month Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is the main cause of skin cancer . UV radiation can also come from tanning booths or sunlamps. The most dangerous kind of skin cancer is called melanoma. The good news? Skin cancer can almost always be cured when it’s found and treated early. Communities, health professionals, and families can work together to prevent skin cancer or detect it early on. Make a difference: Spread the word about strategies for preventing skin cancer and encourage communities, organizations, families, and individuals to get involved. How can Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month make a difference? We can use this month to raise awareness about skin cancer and help people take action to prevent or detect it, both at home and in the community. Here are just a few ideas: Encourage families to adopt good habits together, like wearing sunscreen and limiting their time in the sun. Motivate teachers and administrators to teach kids about the harm of UV radiation and why it’s important to protect yourself. Identify youth leaders in your community who can talk to their peers about taking steps to prevent skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. The good news is that skin cancer can be prevented, and it can almost always be cured when it’s found and treated early. Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month. During the month of May, join us in taking action to prevent skin cancer and reduce the risk of UV damage. Stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Use sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. Put on sunscreen every 2 hours and after you swim or sweat. Cover up with long sleeves and a hat. Summer is Here! Making Memories with Carly The official day summer begins is June 20th; but if you ask me, summer begins when the heat overrides the cool breeze and your hand seems like the only spot for an ice cold beverage! Whatever makes you feel like welcoming the summer, please come join in the many activities we offer at Pine Valley! A new addition in June will be is called “ Treasure Stories”. Everyone is invited to share ANY item they have acquired that means something special to them and has a story to tell! Also, as this summer highlights various patriotic holidays, we want to honor June 14th with the History of Flag Day. I cannot thank you all enough for welcoming me with open arms! See you in the APR!!! ~ Carly Recipe Corner BLT PASTA SALAD Ingredients 12 ounces corkscrew-shaped pasta 1/2 cup milk 12 ounces lean bacon 3 medium ripe tomatoes, cut into chunks 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme 1 clove garlic, minced Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1/4 cup sour cream 4 tablespoons chopped chives or scallion greens 5 heads Bibb lettuce, quartered, or 5 cups chopped romaine hearts Directions Cook the pasta in a large pot of salted boiling water as the label directs.
