Alpay Center for Arts Education presents Keith Crown — The California Paintings, highlighting the artist’s production during his years in Southern California. Coastal scenes in oil, casein and watercolors of Manhattan Beach Pier, Redondo Beach, Palos Verdes Peninsula, LAX, Rosecrans Avenue, Standard Oil Refinery, (1950–1982), all stand as evidence of a rigorous work ethic. Crown drew inspiration from California’s beach cities, oil refineries, airports, congested piers, coastal sage scrub, and rolling seas. Everywhere he painted, Crown worked on-site outdoors from direct observation, maintaining that commitment throughout his 70 years of painting. Crown studied at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago and taught painting and drawing at the University of Southern California Roski School of Fine Arts from 1946 to 1983. The artist was a key figure in bringing post-war modernism to Southern California. More than 40 works are exhibited in the galleries, many for the first time. Peter Plagens, a long-time art critic for Newsweek and a former student of Crown’s, said in a review for Artforum, 1970, “Crown bullies through the natural restrictions on intensity and the traditional overtones of his medium and pulls off some of the best small paintings in my direct experience.” GALLERY HOURS: Monday–Saturday 10 a.m.–4 p.m., Sunday 1–4 p.m. artifacts 4 5 ons January 24–March 16, 2014 Opposite: “Sun Shafts Through Cloud Cover,” casein, 1959, 30" X 22" Left: “Rosecrans Manhattan Beach,” watercolor, 1977, 30"X22" Below: “Redondo Beach Pier with Fisherman,” casein, 1955, 22" X 30" The exhibition is organized by Palos Verdes Art Center / Beverly G. Alpay Center for Arts Education presents Don Crocker: Colors of Twilight. The paintings reflect the ambiguous conditions of light just before nightfall. This exhibition is the first comprehensive survey of the artist’s work. The paintings reveal the artist’s personal and intimate relationship to the landscape of Palos Verdes Peninsula and beyond. After a career lasting more than 40 years as a lawyer, Crocker took up plein air painting in 2000. Crocker was inspired by a family camping trip to Anacapa Island, one of California’s Channel Islands, and sought to capture the memories of this experience using paint from a basic 10 color acrylic paint set. From this experience, the artist’s painting career was born. More than 35 works will be shown in a stunning installation designed by artist Doug Meyer. Exhibition Catalogue The exhibition is accompanied by a 68-page catalogue, Don Crocker: Colors of Twilight, published by the Palos Verdes Art Center. Published on the occasion of this exhibition and produced in collaboration with the artist, the catalogue is filled with a selection of recent work and rare photographs of the artist and his family. Illustrating a particularly tender story of the artist’s passion and relationship to land as subject, it is replete with fascinating discoveries of the spirit of plein air painting. The catalogue will be available to purchase at $19 per catalogue; PVAC members, $14. Exhbition artwork available for purchase. “Incoming Fog, LA Basin,” oil on panel, 11"x14" Ad created by Doug Meyers 2014 Homes Tour Extraordinaire Friday and Saturday, April 11–12, 2014 Homes Tour, Luncheon, Boutiques and Collectibles Enjoy driving around the City of Palos Verdes Estates touring three distinctive 1920s historic homes!
