LEADERSHIP REFLECTION:
Come follow me and I will make you fishers of
people:
Mark 1:16-18
As you talk with your child about their schooling it is
an interesting exercise to talk to them about their
Religious Education lessons (or RE as it is better
known). Their responses will vary I’m sure. In some
ways you would expect a range of responses like you
would get from most subjects “I love Maths, Science
is ok, English is boring… etc”. From this we can
conclude how engaged our child is at a particular
time. However, reflecting upon their response to ‘RE’
really requires a different, perhaps even more
attentive level of listening.
Catholic schools have always taught Religious
Education as a subject. In listening to our responses
as parents therefore, it could be easy to just shrug
our shoulders and say to our kids ‘”Well it’s part of
going to Catholic College so you just have to live with
it”. However, if we are to be true to ourselves as
Christians we know that’s there’s much more to the
story.
Just as Jesus spent much of his ministry time with a
small group of disciples ‘fishing for a deeper, more
courageous, genuine response’ ( known as
discipling), we too, as a school provide many more
opportunities both outside of and within formal RE
time ‘fishing for a deeper response’. Recent
examples of this have been the Year 10 Youth
Ministry students leading a Retreat for Grade 4
students. The theme of the Retreat was bullying with
the Year 10 students using music, drama, sharings,
games, small group work and prayer to convey their
message.
This coming Friday, Year 10 Youth Ministry students will lead another Retreat for 50 primary students who are
preparing for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, in a way which is both dynamic and relevant for their younger peers.
Last week, Year 11 Remar students spent a week in Condobolin, NSW, working with a local primary school with
whom we have built up a great relationship over the past 8 years. As part of the week, the students worked
alongside teachers in classrooms, ran a leadership day for the Grade 6s, painted designs on the courtyard, built a
new sandpit, marked and tagged 400 sheep and even managed to build a ‘5* chicken coop’ for the primary
students to enjoy. Each day would begin and end in prayer and the theme of the week was ‘living simply with
humility and solidarity’. There is so much learning that goes on within each of these experiences. Often students
are stretched in sharing their talents, invited to take risks, and challenged to step up and take responsibility. The
learning that each of these experiences provides may not be measurable by more traditional means, but surely the
level of engagement, of enthusiasm, of fun, of participation, of desire to serve others, and of a deeper faith
experience says it all.

It is the middle of Week 7 and Term 3 is flying by and from me for this edition of the Newsletter, there are a few
congratulations as follows:
•
to the Library staff on a very successful Premiers’ Reading Challenge. During lunch at the Arts Centre last
Tuesday, Years 7, 8 and 9s who participated in the reading challenge had a pizza lunch with Certificates
handed out to over 125 students. Beginning in Term 1, these students had read over 15 books each with a
select group reading over 50 books each and receiving a $20.00 gift certificate from Dymocks. Well done to the
Library Staff for facilitating the Challenge and to the students for their response;
•
to the Year 8 students on completing their interviews and “chat” with me over the last six days. The students
were engaging and entertaining. One answer among many when asked, “What do you like about Year 8?” their
response was “the teachers!”;
•
to Rob Horner and Josie Lindner and our Year 11 Remar students who had an immersion week in Condobilin
last week. Fr Dennis at the 8.30am Mass on Sunday, 19 August blessed them on their way and they returned
this past Saturday. Fr Dennis commented that they were being “Bread” for others as he expressed his thoughts
on Chapter 6 in John’s Gospel. Well done to all those who attended;

to the Year 12 Leadership Team for facilitating the Assembly for us on Wednesday, 29 August.
•
to Mark Knobel, Emily Bouwhuis and all the staff and students for a fantastic Athletics Carnival on Tuesday,
28 August. The spirit among the communities and the whole school was up-beat and positive;
•
to the Year 9 staff for their preparation of the Year 9 camps which go over two weeks in the Grampians
beginning this coming Monday. They have worked consistently in preparing what should be a rich and
rewarding experience for the Year 9 students. We wish them well;
•
and to all the Learning Mentors and students as they completed our Course Counselling in preparation for
electives and subjects for 2013. It is a very important process for us all.

Spanish donuts and nachos for sale to raise money for The Murray Valley Sanctuary Refugee Group. Prices

There will be a Mass, special guest speaker Dawn McKay, a free pizza lunch in Communities followed by the Staff
versus Year 12 students soccer match and of course the star-studded talent quest!
The day is set to be another fun-filled celebration of the wonderful things Catholic College has to offer.

SENIOR BOYS AFL – SUN COUNTRY CUP CHAMPIONS
On Wednesday, 15 August, the Senior Boys AFL team played in the final of the Sun Country Cup Grand Final for the
first time since 2009 against Kyabram Secondary College at Kyabram. The game was played under AFL standard
lighting at the Kyabram Football Ground in front of a crowd of about 200 locals.
Catholic College started the game strongly, kicking three goals, three points to one point in the opening quarter
despite losing Flynn Woodhouse with an ankle injury. The awesome start to the game ended up proving the
difference between the two teams. However, when the lights took effect both teams struggled in the slippery
conditions, with both teams unable to score a goal in the second quarter but kicking nine points between them. After
halftime Kyabram looked a far more determined team and outscored Catholic College by two goals to one and were
full of voice and run. In a very tight last quarter both back lines dominated with the ball continually rebounding
between both half back lines. Our back line stood tall and we were able to apply enough pressure on Kyabram to
force them into making basic skill errors which cost them goals and eventually the game. Brandon Phillips took some
telling marks in the last quarter and teamed with Rhys Evans who played a strong game off the half back flank.
Unfortunately Michael Pengally coped a heavy knock at the start of the last quarter and was unable to participate
further in the game.
In the end Catholic College held on and won the game by seven points, our first Sun Country Cup Win since 2007.
Thank you to all the boys who travelled across for the game and played and participated in the event. Thank you
also to Mr Heinrich who gave up his evening to help out the team.

COMPETITION FOR SCHOOL MAGAZINE COVER - DUE FRIDAY, 12 OCTOBER
This competition is open to all students in the College. Any students interested in submitting their design/s need to
obtain the specifications sheet from Jane Powles. The design must be aesthetically pleasing, dynamic and reflecting
aspects of school life. It may be manually scanned and then completed on the computer or produced solely by using

BATTLEFIELDS TOUR - 2013
The Battlefields Tour is an overseas trip commemorating Australia’s efforts in World War I and II providing the
opportunity for students to experience international travel with an educational focus that makes the sacrifices of
Australia’s soldiers a reality. The tour also provides the opportunity for students to be immersed in the rich culture
and history encountered throughout Europe. The dates for this excursion are 30 March to 10 April 2013.
The tour begins in London where students have an opportunity to explore this historic capital. From London the tour
heads to the Belgian city of Ypres, travelling via the Eurostar train. The Ypres salient witnessed some of the fiercest
fighting of WWI. From Ypres the tour heads south into France and the city of Amiens. Amiens is the city Australian’s
fought to defend in the Somme region of the Western Front. The tour concludes with three days exploring Paris
before departing for Melbourne.

LIBRARY NEWS
Last week was ‘Book Week’ and it was again an outstanding success in the Library. The week began with the
release of many new books, which have been borrowed heavily.
This was followed by ‘The Premiers’ Reading Challenge’ Achievers Lunch on Tuesday, which was the highlight of
Book Week. An amazing 125 students completed the Challenge and were rewarded with lunch and their Certificates
presented by our Principal, Dave Seiter.
The students are very enthusiastic about this lunch and an invitation to it is much sought after. This year an
outstanding 3,885 books were read and a further 24 students received Certificates for reading over 10 books. In
addition, 15 students received book vouchers for reading over 50 books. Congratulations to all students who
participated in the Premiers’ Reading Challenge. Well done!
Thursday was the ‘Literacy Morning Tea’ for all staff which was held in the Library and hosted by both the English
Department and the Library. As well as home made delicacies, a quiz was conducted by the English KLA and new
adult books were on display for borrowing.
This week at Assembly the winner of the ‘Victorian Premiers’ Reading Learning Community Challenge’ was

announced. Hollows finished in 6 place with 384 points, followed by Gandhi on 410, in 4 place da Vinci on 627 and

3 being Malone on 638. After leading the Challenge for most of the year, MacKillop fell short on 682 points and was
overrun by Chisholm on 863 points.

Students who received 50+ Certificates and Vouchers
NATIONAL SOLAR SCHOOLS PROGRAM - SOLAR PANEL INSTALLATION
On Friday, 20 July the installation of 80 solar panels was completed across the roof of our Technology Building
(T-Block). The 15 kW PV array system was installed courtesy of the $50,000 grant our school was able to secure in
late 2011 from the Federal Government. The system will provide a significant amount of the electricity used in
T-Block and will save Catholic College $7,000-$8,000 per year on our electricity bills.
By taking these funds, we have committed to promoting the importance of responding to climate change and
investing in renewable energy throughout our school community. The Environment and Sustainability Leaders met
with the installers and are working on ways they can promote this development to our student body at the next whole
school assembly. They will also focus on promoting ways we can continue to reduce our school's carbon footprint.
Data logging equipment installed with the panels will feed into a website that can be accessed by students at
Catholic College with details about energy production, weather data and energy use. This will be shared with the
school community soon and we will look for ways to make this visible across the school.
A big thank-you to Tony Holt, Nick Mesec and Paul Dullard (Sandhurst CEO) for all their assistance with this project.

Wodonga Council employs staff to supervise children at 19 school crossings across Wodonga.
The Council is currently looking for staff to fill casual positions as School Crossing Supervisors between 8.00am to
9.30am and 3.00pm to 4.00pm, Monday to Friday, during school terms. The rate of pay starts at $20.16 per hour,
