East African Mission Promoters of the Brothers of Holy Cross thanks us for our donation to a Dispensary in Kenya. Monsignor thanks us for our generous remembrance in his Aug 23 Birthday Card.
Christ Renews His Parish
Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) women's weekend is scheduled for September
16th and 17th. THIS IS A FABULOUS PROGRAM AND YOU WILL BE VERY
BLESSED IF YOU ATTEND. Women arrive at Church Saturday morning of the
CRHP Weekend and spend the night Saturday, leaving Sunday afternoon before
dinner. It is a wonderful way to feel a part of the Parish, meet women who will become your friends, and get closer to Jesus. It is a time to be pampered, pray, listen
and have fun. Food is delicious and the weekend without charge. Call Kim Phillips (521-1856) if you are interested in attending, or know someone who would like
an invitation sent to them. I made my Christ Renews His Parish weekend back in
1985 and it was an awesome experience where I met women who are still my
friends today. CRHP is one of the reasons we have such a vibrant Parish. If your
husband would like to attend a Men’s CRHP Weekend October 21-22nd , call Brian
Talley (520-7390).

Brother John Bailanda
Our CCW was blessed to meet Br .John Bailanda who is a missionary in Africa. CCW Member Karen Muhlstadt
hosted Br. John’s June visit to FL. Br John was born in Uganda, and belongs to the Brothers of the Holy Cross. He
runs a Dispensary in Kenya which treats the poorest of the poor and many aids victims. He also uses donations to
help students in need of school fees, and families who need food. Our CCW hosted a small luncheon to welcome
Br. John on Fathers Day, June 18th . Those present gave about $500. Meeting a Missionary puts a human face on
problems faced by those outside of our country. We are grateful for Br. John’s visit and his ministry to God’s people.

Our Holy Father Speaks
This is an excerpt from Benedict XVI's address on
the solemnity of the Assumption to the crowds gathered
pray the midday Angelus.
“Mary is an example and support for all believers:
She encourages us not to lose confidence in the face of
the difficulties and inevitable problems of every day.
She assures us of her help and reminds us that what is
essential is to seek and aspire for "things that are above,
not for things on earth" (cf. Colossians 3:2). Immersed
in daily occupations, we run the risk of believing that in
this world, in which we are only passing by, is the objective of human existence. However, Paradise is the
authentic goal of our earthly pilgrimage. How different
From the Pastor’s Desk
Monsignor Caverly’s trip to Ireland with his
brother, Monsignor Patrick Caverly, VG, pastor of a
Parish in Altamonte Springs, had an added grace this
year. The Rector of the Irish Seminary in Rome invited
them for a weeklong trip to Rome. The Caverly’s were
“shown everything worth seeing”, including the Sistine
Chapel, Church of the True Cross, Subiaco (St Benedict), one of St. Francis’s monasteries, St John Lateran
(a magnificent Church), a Trappist Monastery, and a
visit to the Little Sisters of Jesus Convent. They also
met the Irish Ambassador to the Vatican. Monsignor
said “he came away with a feeling of gratitude for all
we Catholics have inherited. The Church has such a
wonderful tradition and it was a great honor to see what
has been handed down to us.”
The Caverly’s and the Irish Rector were seated in a
front row at Pope Benedict XVI’s weekly Wednesday
Address. At the end of the Address, our Pope personally greeted the Bishops in attendance, blessed the sick
and then walked over to where the Caverly’s were seated. Pope Benedict clasped Monsignor’s hands with his
two hands in a warm, humble and holy manner, looking
him straight in the eye. When Monsignor told him what
an honor it was to greet him, the Pope asked if the two
Caverly’s were brothers! How Divine Providence arranged this moment and what a true privilege for our
Pastor to touch the Vicar of our Church and bring that
blessing back to us.
This is not Monsignor’s first encounter with a Pope.
Monsignor also had the privilege of meeting Pope John
Paul II on three occasions- once, in 1979, concelebrating Mass 10 yards away from the Pope in Philadelphia,
again in Miami, and finally in Rome when Monsignor
accompanied Cardinal Hickey as part of the Serra Club
for Vocations.
Marian Festival

our days would be if they were animated by this perspective! It is what happened to saints. Their human existence witnesses that when one lives with one's heart
constantly directed to heaven, earthly realities are lived
in their just value, as they are illuminated by the eternal
truth of divine love.
To the Queen of Peace, whom we contemplate in
heavenly glory, I would like to entrust once again the
concerns of humanity in every place of the world tormented by violence. ...May Mary inspire in all sentiments of understanding, a will to understand and desires
for concord! [Translation from Italian original by ZENIT] ZE06081720
Thanks to our many CCW bakers, helpers, promoters, sacristans, musicians, rosary leaders,
Knights of Columbus, and Fr. Anthony, the
Third Annual Rosary Festival was a beautiful event with about 150 people attending
Mass followed by candlelight procession,
litany, blessing of Marian objects and reception. The St Raphael School children
brought items to be blessed at the 8
AM Mass as well. We are grateful so
many St Raphael parishioners honored
our Blessed Mother and her son, Jesus,
on the Feast of the Assumption.
So many CCW members and others
helped make this event possible! Helene

“I am so eager to begin my journey to Minneapolis
and NET Ministries. I have some mixed emotions because I will miss my parents, my brother, my
sister and all my friends. However, I have been preparing spiritually for this walk with the Lord and I feel I
am responding to His call.
We will begin with five weeks of intensive training
conducted by NET staff and clergy. Both Archbishop
Harry Flynn and Bishop Richard Pates will be joining
us to preside at special liturgies. The first two weeks
we will be at a Bible Camp in Amery, Wisconsin so
we can concentrate on deepening our faith and begin to
develop strong relationships with our teammates. Toward that end, I will not be bringing my cell phone or
computer with me while we are at camp so my ability
to communicate with all of you will be limited. After
our period of training, we will be assigned to one of 8
teams. I will let you know which team I am assigned
and where we are going.
Please know that you are in my heart and in my
prayers. I humbly ask you to pray for me as I begin the
time of discernment and service. Your kindness and
support mean so much to me. I will be home for 2
weeks at Christmas and look forward to seeing you at
that time. Andy Johnson”

From the internet:
The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a
small, uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God
to rescue him, and every day he scanned the horizon for
help, but none seemed forthcoming. Exhausted, he
eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect him from the elements, and to store his few possessions. One day, after scavenging for
food, he arrived home to find his little
hut in flames, and soon there was
nothing left. The worst had happened, and everything was lost. He
was stunned with disbelief, grief, and
anger. "God, how could you do this to me?" he
cried. Early the next day he was awakened
by the sound of a ship approaching the
island. It had come to rescue him.
"How did you know I was here?" asked the weary man
of his rescuers. "We saw your smoke signal," they replied. It's easy to get discouraged when things are going
bad, but we shouldn't lose heart, because God is at
work in our lives, even in the midst of pain, and suffering. Remember this the next time your "hut" seems to
be burning to the ground. It just may be a smoke signal
that summons the grace of God.

Christian Ways to Reduce Stress
Pray, go to bed on time, get up on time so you can start
the day unrushed, say No to projects that won't fit into
your time schedule, or that will compromise
your mental health. Delegate tasks to
capable others, simplify and unclutter
your life, less is more, get organized
so everything has its place. Allow
extra time to do things and to get to
places, pace yourself- spread out big
changes and difficult projects. Take
one day at a time. Separate worries from
concerns. If a situation is a concern, find out what God
would have you do and let go of the anxiety. If you can't
do anything about a situation, forget it. Live within your
budget; don't use credit cards for ordinary purchases.
Have backups; an extra car key in your wallet, an extra
house key buried in the garden, extra stamps, etc.

My young grandson called the other day to wish me
Happy
Birthday.
He
asked
me
how old I was, and I told him, "62." He was quiet
for a moment, and then he asked, "Did you
start at 1?"
After putting her grandchildren to bed, a
grandmother changed into old
slacks and a droopy blouse and proceeded to wash her hair. As
she heard the children getting
more and more rambunctious, her patience grew
thin. At last she threw a
towel around her head and
stormed into their room, putting them back to bed
with stern warnings. As she left the room, she heard
the three-year-old say with a trembling voice, "Who
was THAT?"
A grandmother was telling her little granddaughter
what her own childhood was like: "We used to skate
outside on a pond. I had a swing made from a tire; it
hung from a tree in our front yard. We rode our pony. We picked wild raspberries in the woods." The
little girl was wide-eyed, taking this in. At last she
said, "I sure wish I'd gotten to know you sooner!"
My grandson was visiting one day when he asked,
"Grandma, do you know how you and God are
alike?" I mentally polished my halo while I asked,
"No, how are we alike?" "You're both old," he replied.
A little girl was diligently pounding away on her
grandfather's word processor. She told him she was
√
PAGE 8
writing a story. "What's it about?" he asked. "I don't
know," she replied. "I can't read."
I didn't know if my granddaughter had learned her
colors yet, so I decided to test her. I would point out
something and ask what color it was. She would tell
me, and always she was correct. But it was fun for
me, so I continued. At last she headed for the door,
saying sagely, "Grandma, I think you should try to
figure out some of these yourself!"
Our five-year-old grandson couldn't wait to tell his
grandfather about the movie we had watched on television, "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea." The
scenes with the submarine and the giant octopus had
kept him wide-eyed. In the middle of the telling, my
husband interrupted Mark, "What caused the submarine to sink?" With a look of incredulity Mark replied, "Grandpa, it was the 20,000 leaks!!"
When my grandson Billy and I entered our vacation
cabin, we kept the lights off until we were inside to
keep from attracting pesky insects. Still, a few fireflies followed us in. Noticing them before I did, Billy whispered, "It's no use, Grandpa. The mosquitoes
are coming after us with flashlights."
A second grader came home from school and said to
her
grandmother,
"Grandma,
guess what? We learned how to make babies today."
The
grandmother,
more
than
a little surprised, tried to keep her cool. "That's interesting," she said, "How do you make babies?" "It's
simple," replied the girl. "You just change 'y' to 'i'
and add 'es'"
A Child’s Logic
A nursery school teacher was delivering a station wagon
full of kids home one day when a fire truck zoomed
past. Sitting in the front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog. The children started discussing the dog's
duties. They use him to keep crowds back," said one
youngster. "No, said another, "he's just for good luck."
A third child brought the argument to a close. "They
use the dogs", she said firmly, "to find the
fire
hydrant."

Our Holy Father Speaks
Encyclical Letter “Deus Caritas Est”
by Pope Benedict XVI to All the Lay Faithful
The Introduction:
1. “God is love, and he who abides in love abides
in God, and God abides in him” (1 Jn 4:16). These
words from the First Letter of John express with remarkable clarity the heart of the Christian faith: the
Christian image of God and the resulting image of
mankind and its destiny. In the same verse, Saint
John also offers a kind of summary of the Christian
life: “We have come to know and to believe in the
love God has for us”.
We have come to believe in God's love: in these
words the Christian can express the fundamental decision of his life. Being Christian is not the result of an
ethical choice or a lofty idea, but the encounter with
an event, a person, which gives life a new horizon
and a decisive direction. Saint John's Gospel describes that event in these words: “God so loved the
world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should ... have eternal life” (3:16). In acknowledging the centrality of love, Christian faith has
retained the core of Israel's faith, while at the same
time giving it new depth and breadth. The pious Jew
prayed daily the words of the Book of Deuteronomy
which expressed the heart of his existence: “Hear, O
Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord, and you shall
love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with
all your soul and with all your might” (6:4-5). Jesus
united into a single precept this commandment of
love for God and the commandment of love for neighbour found in the Book of Leviticus: “You shall love
From the Lips of a Child
These have to be original and genuine - no adult is
this creative!!
JACK (age 3) was watching his Mom breastfeeding his new baby sister. After a while he asked:
"Mom why have you got two? Is one for hot and one
for cold milk?"
STEVEN (age 3) hugged and kissed his Mom
goodnight. "I love you so much, that when you die
I'm going to bury you outside my bedroom window."
BRITTANY (age 4) had an earache and wanted a
painkiller. She tried in vain to take the lid off the bottle. Seeing her frustration, her Mom explained it was
a childproof cap and she'd have to open it for her.
Eyes wide with wonder, the little girl asked: "How
does it know it's me?
SUSAN (age 4) was drinking juice when she got
the hiccups. "Please don't give me this juice again,"
she said, "It makes my teeth cough." D I (age 4)
stepped onto the bathroom scale and asked: "How
much do I cost?"
JAMES (age 4) was listening to a Bible story. His
dad read: "The man named Lot was warned to take
PAGE 3
your neighbour as yourself” (19:18; cf. Mk 12:29-31).
Since God has first loved us (cf. 1 Jn 4:10), love is
now no longer a mere “command”; it is the response
to the gift of love with which God draws near to us.
In a world where the name of God is sometimes
associated with vengeance or even a duty of hatred
and violence, this message is both timely and significant. For this reason, I wish in my first Encyclical to
speak of the love which God lavishes upon us and
which we in turn must share with others. That, in essence, is what the two main parts of this Letter are
about, and they are profoundly interconnected. The
first part is more speculative, since I wanted here—at
the beginning of my Pontificate—to clarify some essential facts concerning the love which God mysteriously and gratuitously offers to man, together with
the intrinsic link between that Love and the reality of
human love. The second part is more concrete, since
it treats the ecclesial exercise of the commandment
of love of neighbour. The argument has vast implications, but a lengthy treatment would go beyond the
scope of the present Encyclical. I wish to emphasize
some basic elements, so as to call forth in the world
renewed energy and commitment in the human response to God's love. Read the whole letter online, or
get it from our Gift Shop. (http://www.vatican.va/

his wife and flee out of the city but his

TAMMY (age 4) was with her mother
when they met an elderly, rather wrinkled
woman her Mom knew. Tammy looked at
her for awhile and then asked, "Why
doesn't your skin fit your face?" A little boy
opened the big family bible. He
was fascinated as he fingered
through the old pages. Suddenly, something fell out
of the Bible. He picked up the object and looked at
it . What he saw was an old leaf that had been
pressed in between the pages. "Mama, look what I
found", the boy called out." What have you got there,
dear?" With astonishment in the young boy's voice,
he answered, "I think it's Adam's underwear!"

Fishing Trip Truths
Two avid fishermen go on a fishing trip. They rent all
the equipment: the reels, the rods, the wading suits,
the rowboat, the car, and even a cabin in the woods.
They spend a fortune. The first day they
go
fishing, but they don't catch
anything. The same thing happens on the second day, and
on the third day. It goes on like
this until finally, on the last day
of
their vacation, one of the men
catches
a fish. As they're driving home they're really depressed. One guy turns to the other and says, "Do
you realize that this one lousy fish we caught cost us
fifteen hundred dollars? "The other guy says, "Wow!
It's a good thing we didn't catch any more!"

world peace and the sanctification of families

for our yearly Convocation October 2- October 5.
Fr. Anthony
Dear Ladies!
All of you are a wonderful gift to me. It would be
difficult for me to be a priest without the love and
support of the 'Church Ladies'. You are my greatest
allies in the quest to bring about the Kingdom of
God. I want you to know how much I truly appreciate all of you. You defend me, encourage
me and inspire me with your
lives. I am blessed to have
such good witnesses of
Christ before me.
The month of October is
dedicated to the Queen of the Most Holy Ro- sary.
The Virgin always brings us to her Son. One day
when Jesus was speaking to a crowd of people a
woman cried out: "Blessed is the womb that bore
you and the breasts that you sucked". Jesus responded, "blessed rather are those who hear the
word of God and keep it!" The response is very similar to the response made by St. Elizabeth during the
Visitation, "blessed is she who believed that there
would be fulfillment of what was spoken to her from
the Lord."
Mary is a woman who believed in the Word of
God. She knew that God was faithful and what he
promised would come to be fulfilled. God does keep
his promises. Mary can teach us how to remain
faithful to the Word so that we fulfill our side of the
Eternal Covenant. The litany of praise begun by the
Angel Gabriel, celebrated by St. Elizabeth and con-
PAGE 5
tinued by the Unknown Woman lives on today in all
of you and in me. Pray the Rosary ladies. Pray for
peace. God will send this peace if we pray. Mary
Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, keep us in the
Word.

whispered to her mother, "Why is the bride
dressed in white?" "Because white is the color of
happiness, and today is the happiest day of her

⇒ A Sunday School teacher asked her

brothers and sisters?" Without missing beat one
little boy answered, "Thou shall not kill."

Our Angel Festival Mass at 7 PM had about 75 people present to honor St Raphael. Thanks to Bernadette
Bowles, Allen Barrett and Eileen Brady for the wonderful music. Joan Malone was sacristan and reader. Marja Beaufait was an altar server and also brought many
items for the reception. I know I’ll leave someone out
and I am sorry in advance, but there were so many
helpers and bakers, it was hard to keep track!! Thanks
to Celeste Brown, Kim Penman, Bernadette Bailey,
Mary Poulin, Michelle Cehula Fellows, Winnie Young,
Marty Foreman, Mary Lu Price, Molly Sanger, Cherie
Mainenti, Marlene D’Abramo, Maggie Moren, Lu Perrin
and Ethelynn Henderson for your help and yummy
baked goods. We had lots of leftovers, but our handy
new freezer in Meeting Room B meant we already
have items for Respect Life Nights Reception.

My Work Resume
My first job was working in an orange juice factory,
but I got canned: couldn't concentrate. Then I
worked in the woods as a lumberjack, but I just couldn't hack it, so they gave me the axe. After that I tried
to be a tailor, but I just wasn't suited for it, mainly, because it was a so-so job. Next I tried working in a
muffler factory but that was exhausting. I worked as a
pilot but eventually got grounded for taking off too
much. Then I tried teaching, but I couldn't make the
grade. I spent a few years as a Psychiatrist but everyone's problems drove me crazy. I wanted to be a
barber, but I just couldn't cut it. Then I tried to be a
chef--figured it would add a little spice to my life but I
just didn't have the thyme. I attempted to be a deli
worker, but any way I sliced it, I couldn't cut the mustard. My best job was being a musician, but eventually I found I wasn't noteworthy. I was a pretty good eye
doctor, but I could not stay focused on the job. I
worked a long time as a doctor. I gave it my best
shot, but I didn't have enough patients. Next was a
job in a shoe factory; but it never touched my sole.
The Energizer Battery Company hired me but then
expected me to keep going, and going, and going. I
became a professional fisherman, but discovered that
I couldn't live on my net income.
I managed to get a good job working for a pool
maintenance company, but the work was just too
draining. I got a job at a zoo feeding giraffes but I was
fired because I wasn't up to it. So then I got a job in a
gymnasium (work-out-center), but they said I wasn't
fit for the job. Of course, I tried being a secretary,
but it turned out not to be my type of work. My years
as an exterminator were pretty good, but I got tired of
the rat race. Next, I found being an electrician interesting, but the work was shocking even thought it
kind of turned me on. I was a gardener for a while,
but I didn't grow with the job even though I was racking in the money. My career as a comedian was a
stand-up success, but the critics thought I was a big
joke. After many years of trying to find steady work I
finally got a job as a historian until I realized there
was no future in it. My last job was working at Starbucks, but I had to quit because it was always the
same old grind.
Internet Advice From Kids
♥
How do you decide who to marry? You got to find
somebody who likes the same stuff. Like, if you
like sports, she should like it that you like sports,
and she should keep the chips and dip coming.”

before, and you get to find out later who you're
stuck with.”
What’s the right age to get married? “Twentythree is the best age because you know the person FOREVER by then.” “No age is good to get
married at. You got to be a fool to get married.” (6
year old boy).
How can a stranger tell if two people are married?
“You might have to guess, based on whether they
seem to be yelling at the same kids.”
What do most people do on dates? “Dates are for
having fun, and people should use them to get to
know each other. Even boys have something to
say if you listen long enough.”
”On the first date, they just tell each other lies and
that usually gets them interested enough to go for
a second date.”
What would you do on a first date that was turning sour? “I'd run home and play dead. The next
day I would call all the newspapers and make
sure they wrote about me in all the dead columns.”
Getting Old
♥
Just before the funeral services, the undertaker
came up to the very elderly widow and asked,
"How old was your husband?" "98," she
replied. "Two years older
than me." "So you're
96," the undertaker
commented. She
responded, "Hardly
worth going home,
is it?"
♥ Reporters interviewing a 104-year-old
woman: "And what
do you think is the
best thing about being 104?" the reporter asked.
She simply replied, "No peer pressure."
♥ The nice thing about being senile is you can hide
your own Easter eggs.
♥ I've sure gotten old! I've had two bypass surgeries, a hip replacement, new knees Fought prostate cancer and diabetes. I'm half blind, can't hear
anything quieter than a jet engine, take 40 different medications that make me dizzy, winded, and
subject to blackouts. Have bouts with dementia.
Have poor circulation; hardly feel my hands and
feet anymore. Can't remember if I'm 85 or 92.
Have lost all my friends. But, thankfully, I still
have my driver's license.

Ladies Day Out was a huge success. We had women from Blessed Trinity, St Jude, Holy Family, Most Holy
Name, St. Paul, St. Mary, and St. Raphael Parishes. The 50 women in attendance had refreshments, fun and
workshops highlighting the work of the commissions - Church, International, Legislative, Family, Organizational and Community.
Thank you to all who attended and helped from St. Raphael’s - Fran Avenoso, Bernadette Bailey, Louise Barrett, Roseanna Costa, Ruth Mattick, Becky McBride, Ruth McDonald, Rosa Rodriquez, Dottie Santacaterina,
Dolores Smith, Mabel Sullivan, Rita Sullivan and Ethelyn Henderson.
From the Pastor’s Desk
Monsignor Caverly reminds us that November is the month of the Holy Souls. Our Church has always encouraged us to pray for the souls in Purgatory and they in turn pray for us. Monsignor thanks our CCW for the
generous gift of $3,500. “Because of the kindness of our parishioners, such as you, we are able to carry on
the Lord’s work that has been commissioned to us. Please be assured of a special remembrance in my daily
Masses and prayers, and may the good Lord continue to bless you in a special way.” St Raphael’s Card Party was a great success and Monsignor enjoyed seeing all those present. Monsignor wishes all the members
of St Raphael’s CCW a very blessed and happy Thanksgiving. We all have so much to be thankful for and let
us remember the men and women in our armed forces. May God bless them and watch over them.
Meals on Wheels Award by Winnie Young
Meals on Wheels celebrated its 40th Anniversary on Oct. 26 with an award banquet at the Carillon Hilton Hotel. Table #1 was reserved for the five Meals on Wheels Award recipients, which included our own Winnie
Young. The award recipients were seated with Honorable Gus Bilarakis, Jan, the director of Meals on
Wheels, and Mr. Lipscomb from Elder Affairs. The guest speaker was Debbie Reynolds.
Vern Rood, age 93, was an award recipient who had delivered meals for 5 different routes for years. He also
made sure people had a meal on the holidays at his own expense. The sign on his car says, “These wheels
deliver meals”.
As for Winnie, she has delivered meals for 31 years on several different routes. She says, “God does the
work and we get the credit.” Her daughter, Joann Bird, attended the banquet and snapped lots of pictures of
this momentous occasion. We are so proud of Winnie Young, charter member of our CCW.

Hello My Friends of St. Raphael CCW. It was my
privilege and honor to represent you as St. Petersburg Diocesan Council of Catholic Women president
at the FCCW (Florida Council of Catholic Women)
Conference in West Palm Beach, Oct. 26-29th. It
was a very successful and well-organized conference. The presidents from all the dioceses of the
state of Florida attended. The theme was:
“Instruments of Justice and Peace”. The host diocese
was Palm Beach Diocesan Council of Catholic Women. The FCCW President /Province Director, Jeannette Schaal, reminded us that we are called to be
peacemakers and that working together we can
make a difference in the world. A special treat was to
meet and hear Karen Hurley, President General of
WUCWO which is World Union of Catholic Women’s
Organizations. She served for five years as Vice
President and in leadership roles promoting the interests of Catholic women in the U.S. and world-wide
for more than 20 years. She is the first American to
hold this position. She reminded us that WUCWO’s
collaboration and dialogue with the Vatican is a gift to
women and to the Church which we must nurture and
care for. Myrna Wong spoke to us about Human
Trafficking and Diane Tugander gave information on
Farm Worker Justice/Migrant Workers. There was a
delightful skit on “Grandmothers of the Bible”. It emphasized that “God does not call the equipped, he
equips the called”. This skit showed how simple
women served the Lord. Ellen Bachman, NCCW
president, gave the keynote address “Living in a
Peaceful World”. Sheila Hopkins, Associate for Social
Concerns Florida Catholic Conference brought us up
to date on the latest legislative issues. She is a graduate of Florida State University and represents the
Bishops of Florida in public policy matters before the
legislative and executive branches of government in
such diverse areas as adoption, immigration, criminal
Card Party
What a wonderful afternoon we all had on Oct.28.
About 60 men and women attended the Fall Card
Party. Maggie Moren, Louise Barrett, Molly Sanger,
Margaret Peck, Winnie Young and Cheryl Murphy
prepared the luncheon -a salad bar, quiche and
homemade soups. Desserts makers were Bernadette Bailey, Dolores Smith, Ruth Mattick, Charlotte

Cherie Mainenti.
Card Party Chairman Roseanna Costa was everywhere at once- welcoming, cooking, cleaning and
picking up. Thanks to her committee: Dottie Santacaterina, Ethelynn Henderson, Peggy Hawkins,

justice, and many more. All of the speakers were well
qualified.
The liturgies are always inspiring. Most Reverend
Gerald M. Barbarito, Bishop of Palm Beach, greeted
each of us warmly and thanked us most sincerely for
all the work the woman do for the church throughout
the state of Florida. He told us we were essential to
the spreading of the gospel message. I am always
uplifted by our Bishops who so sincerely tell us of
their appreciation for all we do. It should encourage
us to keep on with all our outreach projects. The sessions began at 9:00 a.m. and ended around 4:00
p.m. We had ten to fifteen minute breaks. Rev. Clem
Hammerschmitt, Moderator of Palm Beach DCCW,
prepared an authentic German dinner for us. The
parish ladies helped serve, but he did all the cooking!
We are very blessed to have so many clergy who
support our councils and encourage us. Nine of our
past diocesan presidents were memorialized in the
program booklet. Our own Loretta Czyzewski and
Louise Haire were among them.
I hope you will continue to be proud of your membership in St. Raphael Council of Catholic Women and
will know that your membership is important to the
church. We are so fortunate, in this modern day, to
belong to a group of faith-filled, dedicated women
who reach out to care for those in our community and
for each other. Thanks for all you do!
Mary Carlomagno, Rita Sullivan, Peggy Nolan, Marlene D’Abramo,
Dolores Smith did a great job on the Opportunities (15) and Door Prizes (19): Thanks to Winnie
Young, Mary Montecki, Mona Lund, Ruth McDonald,
Ethelyn Henderson, Louise Barrett, Robin Ahlquist,
Roseanna Costa, Mary Driscoll, and several
“unknown” or “wish to remain anonymous” donors.
Thank you to everyone who pitched in to make
the day a great success. None of this would be possible without the fine ladies of our CCW and our
wonderful Monsignor Caverly who was out sweeping
before the card party to tidy up after the storm for
our guests!! We made $870.

CCW Member’s Sister Dies
Avalon Barretto, sister of CCW member Louise Halsmer and Aunt to CCW member Roseanne Halsmer,
died Oct 27. Avalon had moved to St Pete to be with
Louise and Roseanne after the death of Avalon's
husband a year ago. She bought a home in the same
park as Louise. Avalon became critically ill in February and fought back through a long hospitalization
and stay at Bon Secours. Avalon was able to go back
to her new home in St Pete before heading north to
sell her old home where she was found to have the
cancer that caused her death. Avalon will be missed
by all who knew her. Our prayers go out to her family
at this sad time.

Consider regular monthly marriage enrichment and
support through “Teams of Our Lady”. There will be a
couples information meeting in St Raphael’s Meeting
Room B on Sunday, November 12th, 2006 from 3:00
to 4:30 p.m. “Teams” meeting format, organization and
support materials will be discussed and veteran
“teams” couples will be on hand to witness and discuss
how “Teams” has worked to support their marriages.
Couples incur no obligation or commitment by attending this “information only” meeting. No RSVP necessary.
Living out the sacrament of marriage day to day
can be challenging for any couple; whether newly wed
or “seasoned” veterans. Since 1947 “Teams of Our
Lady” has been an internationally established lay
movement solely dedicated and designed to strengthen and support married couples under the patronage
of the Blessed Mother. “Teams” is officially recognized
by the Holy See as a lay institute under the Pontifical
Council for the Laity.
Local couples meet in their “Teams” one evening
per month in each other’s homes in turn. They share a
simple meal in friendship, share their monthly experiences and then reflect on scripture and share prayers
and intentions. Couples also share their individual efforts to pray and to improve marital spirituality and they
close the evening by discussing study material on the
subject of married life and shared faith.

Stem Cell Research - Good or Bad?
by Maggie Moren
Is the Church against stem cell research? The answer is “No”. Within the last couple of years we
have been bombarded with the marvels in medical
science of stem cells and the general public still remains confused regarding this issue.
There are two very distinct types of stem cell research- adult stem cells (which includes umbilical cord
stem cells) and embryonic stem cells. The Church is a
big proponent for adult and umbilical cord stem cells
research but not embryonic stem cell research. Scientists have made remarkable progress in treating diseases using adult and the umbilical-cord stem
cells. Now we hear from the media that embryonic
PAGE 5
stem cells will cure everything. To date, there have
been no cures with embryonic stem cells which reproduce often into tumors and every time an embryo is
used, a living child is killed as life begins at conception.
WE must not become confused by the new terminology. “Embryo” is now referred to as “blastocyst” or
“zygote”. Instead of using the term cloning, you may
now see SCNT--somatic cell nuclear transfer which
means; the nucleus of a body cell is placed into an egg
that has had its nucleus removed. Another term to be
aware of is ANT-OAR--”altered nuclear transfer,” or its
variant “oocyte (egg) assisted reprogramming which
we will be hearing more of in the near future.
Missouri, which is a pro-life state has an amendment on their ballot (and will be a part of their state
constitution if it passes) which purports to ban human
cloning, but the amendment has been cleverly worded
so that the voters think they are voting against legalizing cloning, instead under the definition of cloning ,
(page 5 of the amendment) cloning embryos is actually
permitted, if they are to be killed and used for stem cell
lines. Under the Missouri initiative, the crime is implanting that embryo in a woman’s womb, but it would
allow for any other kind of experiment. Not only is this
morally wrong but the tax payers are the ones who will
be paying for this.
New Jersey already has a law that allows a cloned
embryo to be implanted into a woman’s womb to obtain fetal tissues and it makes a crime to allow the
cloned fetus to be born.
We Catholics along with other Christians and those
who believe in the right-to-life, must be opposed to human cloning and human genetic engineering. We can
not let our federal or state government fund this type of
research. These ANT-OAR proponents can end up
redefining the human embryo, accepting human cloning and redesigning the human species by altering the
human genome. The danger is real and we must be
aware.

From the Internet
The 98-year-old Mother Superior from Ireland was
dying. The nuns gathered around her bed trying to
make her last journey comfortable. They gave her
some warm milk to drink but she refused. Then one
of the nuns took the glass back to the kitchen. Remembering a bottle of Irish whiskey received as a gift
the previous Christmas, she opened and poured a
generous amount into the warm milk. Back at Mother
Superior's bed, she held the glass to her lips. Mother
drank a little, then a little more and before they knew
it, she had drunk the whole glass down to the last
drop. "Mother," the nuns asked with humility, "please
give us some wisdom before you die." She raised
herself up in bed and with a pious look on her face
said, "Don't sell that cow."
WHITE LIE CAKE
Internet find by Claudia Soucy
Alice was to bake a cake for the CCW, but she remembered it the morning of the bake sale and after
rummaging through cabinets, found an angel food
cake
mix. When Alice took the cake from the
oven, the center had dropped flat and
the cake was horribly disfigured.
There was no time to bake another
cake. Being inventive, she looked
around the house for something to
build up the center of the cake. Alice found it- a roll of toilet paper. She
plunked it in and then covered it with
icing. Not only did the finished product look beautiful,
it looked perfect.
Before she left the house to drop the cake by the
church, Alice woke her daughter and gave her some
money and specific instructions to be at the bake sale
the moment it opened at 9:30 AM to buy the cake and
bring it home. When the daughter arrived at the sale,
she found the cake had already been sold. The next
day, Alice promised herself she would try not to think
about the cake and would attend the fancy luncheon/
bridal shower at a prominent Church member’s
home. The meal was elegant, and to Alice's horror,
the cake in question was presented for dessert! Alice
felt the blood drain from her body when she saw the
cake! She started out of her chair to tell the hostess
all about it, but before she could get to her feet, the
mayor's wife said, "what a beautiful cake!" Alice still
stunned, sat back in her chair when she heard the
hostess say, "Thank you, I baked it myself." Alice
smiled and thought to herself, "God is good."

When God created the dog, He said: "Sit all day
by the door of your house and bark at anyone who
comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life
span of twenty years." The dog said: "That's a long
time to be barking. How about only ten years, and I'll
give you back the other ten?" So God agreed.
Next, God created the monkey
and said: "Entertain people, do tricks,
and make them laugh. For this, I'll
give you a twenty-year life span. "The
monkey said: "Monkey tricks for twenty
years? That's a pretty long time to perform. How about I give you back ten
like the Dog did?" And God agreed.
God then created the cow and
said: "You must go into the field with the farmer all
day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and
give milk to support the farmer's family. For this, I will
give you a life span of sixty years. "The cow said:
"That's kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. How about twenty, and I'll give
back the other forty?" And God agreed.
Finally, God created man and said:
"Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your
life.
For this, I'll give you twenty
years."
But man said: "Only twenty
years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the
forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave
back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes
eighty, okay? "Okay," said God, "You asked for it."
So, that's why the first twenty years we eat, sleep,
play and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years,
we slave in the sun to support our family. For the
next ten years, we do monkey tricks to entertain the
grandchildren. And for the last ten years, we sit on
the front porch and bark at everyone.

The Buzzard, the Bat & the Bumblebee
If you put a buzzard in a pen that is 6 feet by 8 feet
and is entirely open at the top, the bird, in spite of its
ability to fly, will be an absolute prisoner. The reason
is that a buzzard always begins a flight from the
ground with a run of 10 to 12 feet. Without space to
run, as is its habit, it will not even attempt to fly, but
will remain a prisoner for life in a small jail with no
top.
The ordinary bat that flies around at night, a remarkably nimble creature in the air, cannot take off
from a level place. If it is placed on the floor or flat
ground, all it can do is shuffle about helplessly and,
no doubt, painfully, until it reaches some slight elevation from which it can throw itself into the air. Then, at
once, it takes off like a flash.
A bumblebee, if dropped into an open tumbler, will
be there until it dies, unless it is taken out. It never
sees the means of escape at the top, but persists in
trying to find some way out through the sides near the
bottom. It will seek a way where none exists, until it
completely destroys itself. In many ways, we are like
the buzzard, the bat, and the bumblebee. We struggle about with all our problems and frustrations, never
realizing that all we have to do is look up. Sorrow
looks back, worry looks around, but faith looks up.
Subject:Water or Coke
WATER: We all know that water is important, but I've
never seen it written down like this before.
a. a. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.
(Likely applies to half world pop.)
b. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so
weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.
c. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.
d. One glass of water shuts down midnight hunger
pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a
U-Washington study.
e. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
f. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses
of water a day could significantly ease back and
joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
g. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy
short-term memory, trouble with basic math,
and difficulty focusing on the
computer screen or on a printed page.
h. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily
decreases the risk of colon cancer
by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of
breast cancer by 79%, and one is
50% less likely to develop bladder
cancer.

Are you drinking the amount of water you should every day?
COKE No wonder coke tastes soooo good:
1. In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol
carries two gallons of Coke in the trunk to remove
blood from the highway after a car accident.
2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of coke and
it will be gone in two days.
3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the
toilet bowl and .......Let the "real thing" sit for one
hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.
4. To remove rust spots from chrome
car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a
crumpled-up piece of Reynolds
Wrap aluminum foil dipped
in Coca-Cola.
5. To clean corrosion from car
battery terminals: Pour a
can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.
6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying
a
cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to
the rusted bolt for several minutes.
7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a
can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the
ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for sumptuous brown
gravy.
8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of
coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent,
and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola
will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean
road haze from your windshield.
FYI: (for your information)
1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid.
Its Ph is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about 4 days.
2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate), the
commercial truck must use the Hazardous material placards reserved for highly corrosive materials.
3. The distributors of coke have been using it to
clean the engines of their trucks for about 20
years!

St. Raphael Catholic School….ThankYou!
On behalf of the St. Raphael Catholic School community, I would like to thank you for your generous donation of
$250.00 to the Catholic Foundation Match Grant Program. Your generosity will be used to help pay tuition for those
students whose families value a Catholic education, but cannot afford the full tuition. “In generous spirit pay homage to
the Lord: be not sparing of freewill gifts. With each contribution, show a cheerful countenance and pay your tithe in the
spirit of joy. Give to the Most High as he has given to you, generously, according to your means. For the Lord always
repays, and he will give back to you sevenfold.” (Sirach 35:7-10) It is people like you who make St. Raphael the wonderful community it is. We are all very blessed to be a part of this wonderful school and church. We truly appreciate
your kindness. May God continue to bless you and your families. Peace be with you. Your partner in faith education,
Miss Valerie Wostbrock, Principal, St Raphael’s School.
From the Pastor’s Desk
Monsignor Caverly was deeply saddened by the loss of Bishop Thomas Larkin. Monsignor had known him for over 40
years. They first met in Jacksonville where “Monsignor” Larkin was Pastor at Christ the King Parish and “Fr.” Caverly
was an Associate Pastor at San Jose Parish. Monsignor Larkin invited Fr. Caverly on occasion to say Mass at his Parish.
During this period, our Monsignor Caverly got to know Bishop Larkin’s mother and sister, Clarice. Later, when both
Bishop Larkin and Monsignor Caverly were stationed in the Diocese of St Petersburg, they continued their friendship.
Whenever Monsignor Caverly’s mother and sister visited from Ireland, Bishop Larkin would have them over for dinner.
Bishop Larkin flew to Ireland for Monsignor Caverly’s mother’s funeral. Bishop Lynch invited Monsignor Caverly to
concelebrate within the sanctuary at Bishop Larkin’s funeral Mass along with the Bishop and other Priests who were
close friends of Bishop Larkin.
On a happier note, Monsignor also concelebrated the blessing of the new altar and baptismal font at St Paul’s Church on
Nov 25th. Monsignor Caverly was stationed at St Paul’s in 1968 as an Associate Pastor. St Paul’s Church spent about
$600,000 to redecorate the interior. They refinished the original pews and refurbished the Stations of the Cross. The
pews were rearranged, and there is a new crucifix carved by the artist who carved our St Raphael Crucifix.
Lesson on Worms- from the Internet
Father decided that a visual demonstration would add emphasis to his Sunday homily. Four worms were placed into
four separate jars. One worm was put into a container of alcohol, another into a container of cigarette smoke, into a
container of chocolate syrup and the fourth worm was put into a container of good clean soil. At the conclusion of
the sermon, the Priest reported the following results: The worm in alcohol - dead! The worm in cigarette smoke dead! The worm in chocolate syrup - dead! The worm in good clean soil - alive! So the Priest asked the congregation, “What can you learn from this demonstration?” someone in the back row quickly raised her
hand and said, "As long as you drink, smoke and eat chocolate, you won't have worms!"

Youth Group by Kim Phillips
Thanksgiving Dinner was well attended with about 50
meals served. Many youth group members participated by serving meals, recognizing the need to serve
our community on this day of thanks. All proceeds
from the dinner (about $100) will be donated directly
to our parish St. Vincent de Paul ministry in order to
help those who are most in need. As always, Celeste
Brown cooked the fabulous meal, which was delicious.
The garage sale was a great event and youth group is
very appreciative of all the items donated. The sale
was a great way for those who are attending either
summer camps, or March for Life, to work and earn
money for their trips.
Cookie Dough was a wonderful fundraiser, especially
for a first time event. Youth offered freshly baked
cookies after all of the masses for two consecutive

weekends. Thank you to all who purchased! Funds
gained will go toward supporting the youth group
program, as well as for those attending any of the upcoming trips. Cookies will be delivered the first or
second week of December.
A spaghetti dinner will be held on Sun, December
3rd, after the 5:30 PM. Mass. Tickets are
only $5.00 or $20.00 maximum per family. This is a wonderful opportunity to
start off this special Advent Season
with our parish community. All proceeds will benefit those who will be
attending the March for Life trip in January. In addition, the Youth Group will
begin selling beautiful Christmas tree ornaments, inscribed St. Raphael's Catholic Church - 2006, beginning next weekend. Cost is only $10!
Christmas Traditions
From Marty Foreman - She’ll be making ornament cookies with whole wheat flour that her the grandkids
will help bake and 'frost' with crunchy peanut butter and sprinkle with birdseed. Then they’ll tie the cookies
onto the trees with strings for the wildlife.
From Theresa McCormick, who is our webmaster- “My fondest memories as a child are singing around the
Christmas tree... When I moved to St. Pete with husband and 4 children, my parents, Janet & Bill Swengros,
lived a few blocks from us and we continued our traditions of singing, only Florida style. My parents were
members of the St. Pete Power Squadron and they did Christmas caroling on decorated boats through the canals of Venetian Isles. We would have 3-4 good songs and then a bunch of songs we that would end up with 'la
- la - la' and humming because we forgot the words! So I started assembling Christmas
song lyrics for our caroling which I have posted on the web- http://florida-family.net/
christmas.html. You can print out copies so your family can have fun by singing
around the Christmas tree!
From Rosa Rodriguez- “In my country, Costa Rica, on Dec. 24 children go to bed early
so that the Child Jesus can bring toys and place them under their beds.
(We don’t have St. .Nicholas or Santa Claus.) On the 25th the children wake up looking under their beds to
find the presents. Most homes have a room assigned for the Nativity because the statues of St. Joseph,
Mary and Baby Jesus are life size including the donkey, cow and camels. People go from house to house singing carols. Christmas dessert is "drunken cake”- a solid pound cake smothered in rum.”
From Michelle Cehula Fellows- “My Maternal Grandmother was 100% French. In honor of my French Grandmother, I learned a beautiful Christmas song. “Il est Ne, Le Divin Enfant” (translated, He is Born, The Divine
Infant.) I leaned this song, in my French I Class, in Warren, Ohio. Years later; my son, Michael David,
brought home a song book, with this song in it. I sang this song for my French Grandmother on Christmas
Eve, all in French, with a French accent. When I first sang it to my mom, via long-distance phone, she
wept. My French was perfect, and my Nany loved the song. Her name was Madame Paule Balme Mastini.

Mary Maroney, past President of St Paul’s CCW, died
Nov 7th. She is now home with the Lord and in His
arms and Our Blessed Lady whom she loved so
much. All have been privileged to have had an inspiration such as Mary to minister to us about redemptive
suffering. Mary fought breast cancer for six years. She
will be dearly missed.
Bishop Larkin Dies
Bishop Thomas Larkin died Nov. 4 after a long ill-
ness. Bishop Larkin was the second Bishop of our diocese. He was born 3/ 31/23 and was ordained a priest in
1947 in Syracuse, NY. He responded to a need for
priests in FL and was Assistant Pastor at Holy Family
Parish, North Miami from1950-54, Pastor at Christ the
King, Jacksonville from 1954-67, and Pastor at St. Cecelia Parish, Clearwater, from1967-79. He was ordained
a bishop for the Diocese of St. Petersburg by former
classmate and personal friend, Pope John Paul II, in
Rome, May 27, 1979. Bishop Larkin retired November
28, 1988. Bishop Lynch writes, “For close to 10 years,
Bishop Larkin led the diocese through an unprecedented
expansion of parishes and facilities. He was always witty in his homilies, usually beginning with a story of his
own ministry here in Florida. Deeply devoted to his
brother priests, from whose ranks he had risen, he was a
co-author of the first book on priestly ministry in the
PAGE 4
post-Vatican II period, “As One Who Serves”, published by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops.”
His body was received into the Cathedral of St
Jude’s in a beautiful ceremony on Nov. 8 at 2 PM. 18
members of the DCCW Board were present, as well as
many priests, diocesan personnel and lay people. After
the service, Bishop Lynch stood by the open casket to
greet all those who had come to pay their respects until
the Night Prayer Service at 7PM. Mass on the 9th was
broadcast on Spirit FM. The eulogies and homilies
were delivered by those who had known Bishop Larkin
for many years and revealed how Bishop Larkin loved
God’s people and was a pioneer in the Catholic Church
in FL. In his childhood, Bishop Larkin and his family
visited the St. Joseph's Oratory in Canada, and Blessed
Andre Bessette predicted the little child would one day
be a Bishop. Bishop Larkin will be buried with his parents in NY State. He is survived by his sister, Clarice.

United States Consecrated
On November 11, Archbishop Pietro Sambi, Holy See Nuncio to the US, renewed our country’s consecration to
our patroness, the Immaculate Conception with this prayer:
“Most Holy Trinity: Our Father in heaven, who chose Mary as the fairest of your daughters; Holy Spirit, who
chose Mary as your spouse; God the son, who chose Mary as your mother; in union with Mary, we adore your
majesty and acknowledge Your supreme, eternal dominion and authority.
“Most Holy Trinity, we put the United States of America into the hands of Mary Immaculate in order that she
may present the country to you. Through her we wish to thank you for the great resources of this land and for
the freedom, which has been its heritage. Through the intercession of Mary, have mercy on the Catholic
Church in America. Grant us peace. Have mercy on our President and on all the officers of our government.
Grant us a fruitful economy born of justice and charity. Have mercy on capital and industry and labor. Protect
the family life of the nation. Guard the precious gift of many religious vocations. Through the intercession of
our mother, have mercy on the sick, the poor, the tempted, sinners – on all who are in need.
“Mary, immaculate virgin, our mother, patroness of our land, we praise you and honor you and give our country and ourselves to your sorrowful and Immaculate Heart. O’ Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary
pierced by the sword of sorrow prophesized by Simeon save us from degeneration, disaster and war. Protect us
from all harm. O’ Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, you who bore the sufferings of your son in the
depths of your heart be our advocate. Pray for us, that acting always according to your will and the will of
your divine son, we may live and die pleasing to God. Amen.”
WHITE LIE CAKE
Internet find by Claudia Soucy
Alice was to bake a cake for the CCW, but she remembered it the morning of the bake sale and after rummaging
through cabinets, found an angel food cake mix. When Alice took the cake from the oven, the center had dropped
flat and the cake was horribly disfigured. There was no time to bake another cake. Being inventive, she looked
around the house for something to build up the center of the cake. Alice found it- a roll of toilet paper. She plunked
it in and then covered it with icing. Not only did the finished product look beautiful, it looked perfect.
Before she left the house to drop the cake by the church, Alice woke her daughter and gave her some money and
specific instructions to be at the bake sale the moment it opened at 9:30 AM to buy the cake and bring it home.
When the daughter arrived at the sale, she found the cake had already been sold. The next day, Alice promised herself she would try not to think about the cake and would attend the fancy luncheon/bridal shower at a prominent
Church member’s home. The meal was elegant, and to Alice's horror, the cake in question was presented for dessert!
Alice felt the blood drain from her body when she saw the cake! She started out of her chair to tell the hostess all
about it, but before she could get to her feet, the mayor's wife said, "what a beautiful cake!" Alice still stunned, sat
back in her chair when she heard the hostess say, "Thank you, I baked it myself." Alice smiled and thought to herself, "God is good."
Wisdom
The 98-year-old Mother Superior from Ireland was dying. The nuns gathered around her bed trylast journey comfortable. They gave her some warm milk to drink but she refused. Then
one of the nuns took the glass back to the kitchen. Remembering a bottle of Irish whiskey
received as a gift the previous Christmas, she opened and poured a generous amount
into the warm milk. Back at Mother Superior's bed, she held the glass to her lips. Mother drank a little, then a little more and before they knew it, she had drunk the whole glass
down to the last drop. "Mother," the nuns asked with humility, "please give us some wisdom before you die." She raised herself up in bed and with a pious look on her face
said, "Don't sell that cow."

When God Created…
by Bernadette Bailey
When God created the dog, He said: "Sit all
day
by the door of your house and bark at anyone
who comes in or walks past. For this, I will
give you a life span of twenty years." The
dog said: "That's a long time to be barking. How about only ten years, and I'll give
you back the other ten?" So God agreed.
Next, God created the monkey and said:
"Entertain people, do tricks, and make
them laugh. For this, I'll give you a twentyyear life span. "The monkey said: "Monkey tricks for
twenty years? That's a pretty long time to
perform. How about I give you back ten
like the Dog did?" And God agreed.
God then created the cow and said: "You
must go into the field with the farmer all
day long and suffer under the sun, have
calves and give milk to support the
farmer's family. For this, I will give you a life span of
sixty years. "The cow said: "That's kind of a tough life
you want me to live for sixty years. How about twenty,
and I'll give back the other forty?" And God agreed.
Finally, God created man and said: "Eat, sleep, play,
marry and enjoy your life. For this, I'll give you twenty
years." But man said: "Only twenty years? Could you
possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave
back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog
gave back; that makes eighty, okay? "Okay," said God,
"You asked for it."
So, that's why the first twenty years we eat, sleep, play
and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years, we slave
in the sun to support our family. For the next ten years,
we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And for the last ten years, we sit on the front
porch and bark at everyone.

.."Teach the children! Teach them the old meaning of
Christmas. The meaning that now-a-days Christmas has
forgotten."
-Santa reached in his bag and pulled out a FIR TREE
and placed it before the mantle. "Teach the children that
the pure green color of the stately fir tree remains green
all year round, depicting the everlasting hope of mankind, all the needles point heavenward, making it a symbol of man's thoughts turning toward heaven.”
-Out of his bag he pulled a brilliant STAR. "Teach the
children that the star was the heavenly sign of promises
long ago. God promised a Savior for the world, and the
star was the sign of fulfillment of His promise."
- Out of his bag he pulled a CANDLE. "Teach the children that the candle symbolizes that Christ is the light of
PAGE 7
the world, and when we see this great light, we are reminded of He who displaces the darkness."
-Out of his bag he removed a WREATH and placed it
on the tree. "Teach the children that the wreath symbolizes the real nature of love. Real love never ceases. Love
is one continuous round of affection."
-He then pulled from his bag an ornament of HIMSELF.
"Teach the children that I, Santa Claus symbolize the
generosity and good will we feel during the month of
December." ----He brought out a HOLLY LEAF.
"Teach the children that the holly plant represents immortality. It represents the crown of thorns worn by our
Savior. The red holly represents the blood shed by Him.
-"Next he pulled from his bag a GIFT and said, "Teach
the children that God so loved the world that he gave his
only begotten Son. Thanks be to God for his unspeakable gift. Teach the children that the wise men bowed
before the Holy Babe and presented him with gold,
frankincense and myrrh. We should always give gifts in
the same spirit of the wise men."
-Santa pulled out a CANDY CANE and hung it on the
tree. "Teach the children that the candy cane represents
the shepherds' crook. The crook on the staff helps to
bring back strayed sheep to the flock. The candy cane is
the symbol that we are our brother's keeper."
-He reached in again and pulled out an ANGEL. "Teach
the children that it was the angels that heralded in the glorious news of the Savior’s birth. The angels sang 'Glory to
God in the highest on earth peace and good will toward
men."
- I heard a soft twinkling sound, and from his bag he pulled
out a BELL. "Teach the children that as the lost sheep are
found by the sound of the bell, it should ring mankind to
the fold. The bell symbolizes guidance and return."
-Santa looked back and was pleased. He looked back at me
and I saw that the twinkle was back in his eyes. He said,
"Remember, teach the children the true meaning of
Christmas and do not put me in the centre, for I am but a
humble servant of the One that is, and I bow down to
worship Him, Jesus Christ our Lord, our God."

From the Pastor’s Desk
Monsignor Caverly wishes each and every one of you a Happy New Year. The crowds at the Christmas
Masses were really outstanding, especially at the 4 and 6 PM Christmas Eve Masses attended by many
young families. In fact all the Masses were well attended except the 11:30 AM Mass which was in
the middle of a rain storm. The Masses on New Year’s Day were also well attended. This is very
edifying for a Pastor to see so many of his parishioners attending Mass!
Our St Raphael School is open after the holidays and doing well. We hope for increased attendance in the coming year. Plans for the old Church are moving ahead as a team of several parishioners are
working with the architect who is planning a chapel, classrooms and a Youth Room. We will be having a stewardship drive beginning in late January or February.
From Father Anthony
After the Christmas Masses were complete at St. Raphael’s, I drove over to Pinellas Jail and celebrated
Christmas Mass for the men who were incarcerated. It was a joyful penance I offered to the Lord. The time
spent with them was like time spent with the Lord.
As Roman Catholic Christians we are against the death penalty unless it is the only effective way of defending human lives against the unjust aggressor. (CCC 2267). But
due to the sufficient and non-lethal means which are available to defend and protect
people’s safety, most often the death penalty is unnecessary. The Church stands by
this doctrine reminding us that while the state renders the unjust aggressor incapable
of doing further harm while they are incarcerated, the state has not taken away from them
the possibility of redemption. Many times men do take the time to discover for themselves Jesus Christ. Not
all criminals are in jail and not all criminals are unholy.
Personally, I find this an important asset to my faith. Jesus Christ came to give life, not to destroy life. But
so often as a Church, we find it easy to dictate as to how society should be run while we do nothing to bring it
about. Do we walk the talk or simply talk – blah blah blah!
There are only three priests in this county who are willing to give up an hour or so a month to celebrate
Mass for the men in prison. If the Church is so concerned about keeping criminals alive so that they can be
redeemed, then where is the Church in this redemption process? How can we expect these men to be redeemed without the Church? These men need to be catechized and forgiven. They will determine how much
of a reward we receive in case we have forgotten, “When I was in prison, you visited me.” Matthew 25.36.
There is no greater gift that can be given then love.

Migrant Report by Rosa Rodriguez
On behalf of the migrants from Ruskin, thank-you to all who donated clothes, toys, and books for Christmas. Since we
had over 30 big bags, it took the social worker two trips to transport all the items. Thanks, too, for all the Thanksgiving
donations you gave at our November meeting and to me privately. I went Thanksgiving shopping for the migrants with
their social worker. We spent $300+ on groceries including 7 turkeys. The migrants had a dinner and each family received a bag of groceries to take home. The turkeys were given away by a free raffle and everyone went home happy!
We asked our students what they love about St. Raphael Catholic School:
“We like SRS because we learn a lot, we have great teachers, we go to Mass, we have fish fries, we have a fun playground, St. Raphael is the patron saint of medicine and it
makes me feel safe, we have 30 minute lunch time. It is
fun, I like the classroom jobs, we receive a blessing from
the priests, we learn about saints. It is special because everyone is nice and kind. I like recess and the balls we get to
use! Because my teacher is always so happy, she even
makes math fun. You get to see and play with your
friends, especially kickball. I like my Principal. The beautiful carpet, the sturdy fences and playground are great.
The faculty represents the love we have for God. I know
what will happen next, where I feel safe and secure. It’s
where 51% of my friends reside, where I grow with and
through faith and love, and where I learn to come closer to
Jesus. St. Raphael means to me FUN, period! It’s so great
to learn math, reading and so on in the most exciting way
possible. We are a family and children of God. We are a
holy and peaceful school, and our staff is the best! There is
something for everyone! Student council, Jr. and Sr.
Band , Choir, Sports. The Choir sings so well! We all love
to be in the choir. It does not matter if you have an average
voice; it matters that we are praising Him and singing for
joy. God loves to hear our voices. Remember another way
of praying is singing! I love St. Raphael so much because
of all the stuff we do here. Like the sports and even
church. I love singing in church. Our church is the BEST.
Ok, back to the sports, our coach is the BEST of all. He
might be in a wheelchair, but he works us hard. Everyone
is really nice and no one makes fun of others. The teachers
really take time to make sure you understand what they are
teaching. I have only been going here for three days. I love
going to SRS because I’ve been going here since 1st grade
and I get to see my best friends everyday. The teachers
here are so great and they are always so poised. I really
love the music program here. Also the after school sports
are fun and it motivates kids to get good grades. The best
thing about SRS is getting to know our God better. It is
true we are #1. I love how each teacher knows my name
and knows a little something about me, and I love having
friends whom I can count on. I also love having a good
school that I feel protected in.”

Community Concerns by Rosa Rodriguez
On Compassion - some people say that compassion is a quality, others say that it is something you
are born with, but I think that compassion is something all of us have just there, in us. Sometimes
we are so busy, that we do not see who needs our
compassion. Jesus, when He walked with the Apostles preaching, had compassion for everyone including the people with leprosy.
We are so blessed that we have enough and more,
so it is fulfilling to share and give those who appreciate our handouts.
Internet Humor
A little boy, about 10-years-old, was standing before
a shoe store on the roadway, barefooted, peering
PAGE 4
through the window, and shivering with cold. A lady
approached the young boy and said, "My, but you're
in such deep thought staring in that window!" "I was
asking God to give me a pair of shoes," was the boy's
reply. The lady took him by the hand, went into the
store, and asked the clerk to get half a dozen pairs of
socks for the boy. She then asked if he could give her
a basin of water and a towel. He quickly brought
them to her. She took the little fellow to the back part
of the store and, removing her gloves, knelt down,
washed his little feet, and dried them with the towel.
By this time, the clerk had returned with the socks.
Placing a pair upon the boy's feet, she purchased him
a pair of shoes. She tied up the remaining pairs of
socks and gave them to him. She patted him on the
head and said, "No doubt, you will be more comfortable now." As she turned to go, the astonished kid
caught her by the hand, and looking up into her face,
with tears in his eyes, asked her . .. "Are you God's
wife?"
A Special Promise
It was the day AFTER Christmas at a church in San
Francisco. The pastor of the church was looking at
the manger scene, when he noticed that the
baby Jesus figure was missing
from the cradle. He immediately turned and went outside
and saw a little boy with a red
wagon
walking
down
the street. And in the wagon,
was the figure of the infant Jesus.
So he walked up to the boy and said, "Son, where did
you get that little baby Jesus that's in your wagon?"
The little boy replied, "I got him from the church."
And why did you take him?" asked the pastor. The
little boy replied, "Well, about a week before Christmas, I prayed and I told Jesus if he would bring me a
red wagon for Christmas, I would give him a ride in
it!”

Papal Message for World Day of the Sick
Here is an excerpt from Benedict XVI's message for the
World Day of the Sick, to be observed on Feb. 11, the
principal venue being Seoul, South Korea.
Dear Brothers and Sisters, ...Once again the Church
S T . R A P HA E L' S C O U NC I L O F C A T HO LI C WO ME N
turns her eyes to those who suffer and calls attention to
the incurably ill, many of whom are dying from terminal
diseases. They are found on every continent, particularly
in places where poverty and hardship cause immense
misery and grief. Conscious of these sufferings, I will be
spiritually present at the World Day of the Sick, united
with those meeting to discuss the plight of the incurably
ill in our world and encouraging the efforts of Christian
communities in their witness to the Lord's tenderness
and mercy....The Church wishes to support the incurably
and terminally ill by calling for just social policies
which can help to eliminate the causes of many diseases
and by urging improved care for the dying and those for
whom no medical remedy is available...Here I would
like to encourage the efforts of those who work daily to
ensure that the incurably and terminally ill, together with
their families, receive adequate and loving care... Many
such individuals -- health care professionals, pastoral
agents and volunteers -- and institutions throughout the
world are tirelessly serving the sick, in hospitals and in
palliative care units, on city streets, in housing projects
and parishes. ...I now turn to you, my dear brothers and
sisters suffering from incurable and terminal diseases. I
encourage you to contemplate the sufferings of Christ
crucified, and, in union with him, to turn to the Father
with complete trust that all life, and your lives in particular, are in his hands. Trust that your sufferings, united
to those of Christ, will prove fruitful for the needs of the
Church and the world. I ask the Lord to strengthen your
faith in his love, especially during these trials that you
are experiencing. It is my hope that, wherever you are,
you will always find the spiritual encouragement and
strength needed to nourish your faith and bring you closer to the Father of Life. Through her priests and pastoral
workers, the Church wishes to assist you and stand at
your side, helping you in your hour of need, and thus
making present Christ's own loving mercy towards those
who suffer. ...From the Vatican, 8 December 2006.

be joining “spiritually” with those who are up in Washington D.C. walking for the end of Roe vs. Wade. Although
we are unable to be in Washington DC physically, we can
be there as a strong prayerful community in spirit. Fr. Anthony will hold this special prayer service. 34 candles,
each representing one of the 34 years since Roe vs. Wade
has been legalized, will be placed in front of the altar. There will be readings from the Gospel, a brief homily, silent prayer in front of each candle, and a red rose laid

Focus 11
Each February for the past 6 years, the Diocese of St. Petersburg has sponsored the FOCUS 11 Vocation Project.
This high energy initiative focuses on High School Juniors
(11th grade) the first day and then 6th graders (11 year olds)
the next two days. It has proven itself to be a great success. When we began this program, we initially targeted
only those students in Catholic schools. The last several
years we have expanded these days to include students
outside of Catholic schools. We expect over 1100 sixth
graders to participate in this year’s 6th grade days and over
500 junior to be present on the 11th grade day. We need
help baking cookies for those 1600+ kids. Call Louise
Barrett at 821-2561 for details.
Pontifax Day of Prayer

all people who are incarcerated: That they will find
ways to rebuild their lives, and that they will be offered opportunities to begin again.

Rosary Makers by Janet O'Grady
I have been asked by father Leo Flynn (missionary in
Nigeria) to send pictures of the children making rosaries so he can acknowledge them in his World missionaries magazine. Father Flynn is in charge of the
Rosary crusade in Nigeria and he has ten centers
which are homes where young children gather each
morning at 7 am and are taught how to say the Rosary
along with other basic prayers and catechism. As
they grow older they join Baptism and First Communion classes. Father Flynn also has a morning
Mass for all unborn and aborted children.
Thank you Janet and your CCD Class for making rosaries for the Missions. Ruth Mattick reports that this

School News
Catholic School week was a huge success. Student
alumni from St. Raphael School spoke at the weekend
Masses about how their experiences have guided their
future. There were guided student tours on Sunday and
the school made a giant “St Raphael’s Times” newspaper displayed at the church entrance. Monday was Community Appreciation Day. Students had a Vocabulary
Parade (where words are transformed into costumes), a
St. Pete Police Canine Unit presentation and a St. Pete
Fire and Rescue presentation. Tuesday was Priest Appreciation Day. There was an All-School Rosary presented by our Student Council in the new Church following 8:00am Mass and Spiritual Bouquets were presented to each Priest from every class. On Wednesday,
the school celebrated Parent Appreciation Day. There
was a treat for all parents who come through the morning car line. The students made a “newspaper hat” to
wear today to “spread the good news”. Thursday was
Student Appreciation Day. Students wore this year’s

Fr. Mike Smith Installed as Pastor
in Citrus County by Jane Winstead
Fr. Mike Smith was installed as pastor January 27 at
St. Scholastica Catholic Church in Lecanto by Bishop Lynch. This was truly a beautiful occasion to witness. There was excitement in the air by everyone
who attended. There were several priests, deacons,
Knights of Columbus honor guard and parishioners
packed the large church. Fr. Mike’s mother and
niece also attended. The beautiful music and songs
from the choir filled the church.
The ceremony
touched all of our hearts. Wendell and Jane Winstead
and Dan and Carol Ann Bates were honored to be
there to see Fr Mike and to let him know that all his
friends from St. Raphael’s are praying for him.
After the ceremony all were welcomed to attend the
reception in the Pope John Paul II School cafeteria.
The reception hall was filled with good food, music
and decorations. The young children made a special
area for their special cards and homemade signs to
congratulate Fr. Mike. One large sign read, “We’re
So Glad You’re Here!”
Fr. Mike greeted Wendell and Jane and Dan and Carol Ann. Jane presented Fr. Mike with a 92-page
scrapbook photo album capturing the memories of
his years at St. Raphael’s, 2000-2004. He was delighted to have received such a special gift.
St. Scholastica Catholic Church parishioners will be
blessed to have Fr. Mike Smith as their Pastor.
If anyone would like to send Fr. Mike a card to congratulate him, the address is:

“I wish, therefore, to commend your promotion of the Sacrament of Penance. While this Sacrament is often
considered with indifference, what it effects is precisely the fullness of healing for which we long. A newfound appreciation of this Sacrament will confirm that time spent in the confessional draws good from evil,
restores life from death and reveals anew the merciful Face of the Father.” Address to the Bishops of Western
Canada, October 9, 2006.

April Papal Intentions
General: That, allowing himself to
be enlightened and guided by the
Holy Spirit, every
Christian may answer
enthusiastically and faithfully to
the universal call to sanctity.
Mission: That the number of
priestly and religious vocations
may grow in North America
and the countries of the Pacific
Ocean, in order to given an
adequate answer to the pastoral
and missionary needs of those
populations
Here is an except from Bishop
Lynch’s homily at the Chrism Mass.
“Dear sisters and brothers, …I wish
to invite you to a re lection on a
very familiar Gospel, the journey to
Emmaus…the signi icance of this
passage… for our diocese as we
prepare later this year to formally
and of icially begin a signi icant
effort to teach, understand and
embrace once again the Eucharist as
the “source and summit” of our
lives. Place yourself for a moment, if
you will, in the position of the two
disciples. Assume for a moment that
our journey begins at the doors of
this
Cathedral…envision
accompanying me on a walk. What
might we talk about? What might
we share with each other? …. There
would be a lot we could possibly
talk about on our walk. But would
any of us, walking seven miles
today, likely speak of that special
moment when Jesus, body and
blood, soul and divinity took his
dwelling place within us? Would
any of us, priests, deacons or people
CCW Newsletter
of God rhapsodize about that
moment when in our very midst
bread and wine, by the action of the
priest and the prayer of the Church,
were transformed into Christ
Himself? Would we say and talk
about how we recognized him in the
breaking of the bread? And would
we discuss on our journey just how
our lives have changed as a
consequence of his brief stay within
us. In the Eucharist Pope Benedict
XVI reminds us that Jesus, “draws us
into himself….and the substantial
conversion of bread and wine into
his body and blood introduces
within creation the principle of a
radical change, a sort of ‘nuclear
ission’…which penetrates to the
heart of all beings….” (Sacramentum
Caritatis, page 17)
Nuclear ission – an almost atomic
power to become Christ, to speak
like Christ, to bring Christ to the
world. Aware of this, how could our
conversation… focus on anything
other than what we might do in the
present and future to hear, worship
and share the Lord, with one
another and with the world.”

Lenten Mini Retreat
New Members
58 CCW members had a beautiful Lenten Retreat on March 4th. Rosary was followed by
Mass with Fr Gonzalez as presider, Marja Beaufait
as cantor and Eileen Brady as organist. Monsignor
Caverly gave us his blessing and off we went to St
Therese in car pools. It was cloudy and cold, and
there were a lot of us, so for space purposes, we
met in the School of the Immaculata for a continental breakfast. St Therese was so hospitable- they
were warm, generous and truly loving, welcoming
us with open arms.
Fr Alexis, a Byzantine Rite priest who is a chaplain at Georgetown law school, was our guest
speaker. His topic was refurbishing the image of
God.His irsttalkhelpedusseehowweourselves
are made in the image of God, and to re lect on
what we show that is in God's image and how we
see God's image in others. The second re lection
was about how we perceive God, and consequently,
howwere lectGodtoothers.FrBobEvancho,the
pastor, spoke to us about the Byzantine rite and
surprised us with his humor. On a very happy note,
we ate lunch together and then, sadly, we parted to
go home once again. It had been a wonderful half
day retreat and we felt as if we had been on a journey to heavenly places. St. Therese is a beautiful
Church, built to remind us of heaven. We were with
each other and the lovely ladies of St Therese's and
we thought and re lected on our loving God who
desires us completely to be His forever!!! Thanks
to all who were able to participate and St Therese’s
Church who was so hospitable.
We welcome our new members- Ava Abner, Ursula
Abner, Jeanette Abramo, Judy Birins, Andrea Bulger, Michelle Foerster, Fran Clendenin, Marie
Leuchs, Pat Mackey, Toni Matthews, Linda Mims,
and Mary Simoneau. We treasure your decision to
join ranks with St Raphael’s Council of Catholic

Youth Group by Kim Phillips
The annual Bunny Breakfast was a fun
event, complete with pony rides,
bounce house, and the ever important egg hunt. Due to the varied
spring break schedules of different
schools, the event did not quite cover
its own expenses, falling short by approximately $100. Our wonderful Youth DirectorJessieFreemanhopesto indawaytocover
the shortage since all Youth Group events must
cover their own costs.
High schoolers from both St. Raphael's and St.
Jude's had the opportunity to spend a Palm Sunday weekend together, praising God and deepening their faith. The two groups traveled to Good
Counsel Camp for a wonderful retreat and returned home physically tired but spiritually renewed. Junior high students will soon attend their
own mini retreat where they too can spend time
having fun in a faith centered environment. These
weekend trips, as well as the summer camps, that
our Youth Group makes available to these young
people are a huge blessing in a time when our
youth are faced with so many negative choices.
Kids and fun is pretty much expected but many of the youth have also been hard at
work, rehearsing for the upcoming Passion
Play. Students have set aside other actives in order to give their all to this important parish
event.
Fundraising has been put on hold during this
holy season but youth hope to come up with additional methods of raising funds in order to pay for
those expensive summer camp fees. If anyone
would like to make a donation to the Youth Group,
contact Jessie Freeman.

The Chrism Mass on Holy Tuesday at the cathedral was beautiful. Bishop Lynch emphasized the
importance of the Eucharist and will begin a three
year program encouraging all Catholics in the Diocese to become more aware of the gift of the Eucharist and what the Sacrament means in transforming our lives. The Pope Recently issued
“Sacramentum Caritatis”, a document on how vital
the Eucharist is in the life of the Catholic Church.
The Eucharist- the Real Presence of Jesus- is the
great treasure of our Church. We hope more nonCatholics will appreciate the gift of the Eucharist
and be received into full Communion.
Our congratulations go to Maggie Moren who
was awarded the 2007 Handmaiden of the Year by

♥ From Member Rosa Rodriguez - In my country,
Costa Rica, my mom prepared food for Holy Week
the previous week because no one worked in or
out of the house during Holy Week. We 10 children had no movies or music in the house. Mom
told us about the passion and we prayed the Rosary. The whole week we were in mourning and
went to Church for all the services. On Holy Friday, a big cruci ix was placed ontheAltar loor

CCW Member Easter Traditions:
From Julie Musselman - Remember your godchildren or god-parents with a card at Easter. It is a
nice way to let your god-children know you are
praying for them, to give them spiritual insight or
even a religious gift. It is also a great time to remember your god-parents and send them a card to
thank them for their prayers for you and any religious training they have provided you over the
years.
Lent is a great time to remember our own baptism and our children's baptisms. If you still have
the baptismal candles, get them out and have them
at the dinner table and teach your children about
the sacrament and how important it is to be a child
of God. This is not just for young children- our
teens, twenties and beyond can all be catechized.

♥ Ruth Mattick had a miracle happen to her last
month. Forty-three years ago, she was in a car
accident and suffered a whiplash injury. Since
then, she had constant headaches-sometimes,
going into a migraine. This past Christmas, her
daughter gave her a gift certi icate to a chiropractor. Reluctantly, she went, thinking this was
just a waste of money. Upon her irst visit, the
bone in her neck that was causing all of her pain
was put back in place. No more pain! It’s amazing. Thank God.

Forward in Faith
Forward in Faith is a stewardship program that
allows us to actively commit to a life of gratitude
and responsibility, and to thank God for his endless
gifts. We have begun work to raise $3.25 million
over the next three years and to be better stewards. Our current debt is almost $3million, mostly
the mortgage on our new church. The balance in
our savings account to meet the monthly payments
will be depleted later this year. Our offertory is
insuf icient to pay both our annual operating expenses and our mortgage payment. We need money to eliminate or reduce this debt, make capital
improvements, support current and new parish
ministries. We need 100 volunteers to make calls
to every household in our parish, about 15 calls
each, three times. You will not be asking for money. The calls are to remind parishioners to pick up
information packages or encourage participation at
an event. If you can help or want more information, please call Linda Champion at (727) 5208662 or EnlistmentSRC@aol.com. Training sessions for callers are being held at 11 AM and 6 PM

God wants spiritual fruit, not religious nuts.
♥ Dear God, I have a problem, it's Me. Growing old
is inevitable- growing UP is optional. There is no
key to happiness. The door is always open. Silence is often misinterpreted but never misquoted. Do the math and count your blessings. Faith
is the ability to not panic. Laugh every day, it's
like inner jogging. If you worry, you didn't pray.
If you pray, don't worry. As a child of God, prayer
is kind of like calling home everyday. Blessed are
the lexible for they shall not be bent out of
shape. The most important things in your house
are the people. When we get tangled up in our
problems, be still. God wants us to be still so He
can untangle the knot. A grudge is a heavy thing
to carry. He who dies with the most toys is still
dead. Have a great day!!! The SON is shining and
He can certainly use you!
♥ A passenger in a taxi leaned over to ask the driver a question and tapped him on the shoulder.
The driver screamed, lost control of the cab,
nearly hit a bus, drove up over the curb, and
stopped just inches from a large plate glass window. The driver said, "I'm sorry but you scared
the daylights out of me. Today is my irst day
driving a cab. I've been driving a hearse for the
last 25 years."
♥ A little boy was in a relative's wedding. As he
was coming down the aisle, he would take two
steps, stop, and turn to the crowd. While facing
the crowd, he would put his hands up like claws
and roar. So it went, step, step, ROAR, step, step,
ROAR, all the way down the aisle. As you can imagine, the crowd was near tears from laughing so
hard by the time he reached the pulpit. When
asked what he was doing, the child sniffed and
said, "I was being the Ring Bear."
♥ One Sunday, a young child was "acting up" in
Church. The parents did their best to maintain
some sense of order in the pew but were losing
the battle. Finally, the father picked the little fellow up and walked sternly up the aisle on his
way out. Just before reaching the safety of the
foyer, the little one called loudly to the congregation, "Pray for me! Pray for me!"
♥ One particular four-year old prayed, "And forgive us our trash baskets as we forgive those
who put trash in our baskets."

A little boy was overheard praying: "Lord, if
you can't make me a better boy, don't worry
about it. I'm having a real good time like I am."
My grandson was visiting one day when he
asked, "Grandma, do you know how you and
God are alike?" I mentally polished my halo
while I asked, "No, how are we alike?" "You're
both old," he replied.
A woman was trying hard to get the ketchup
out of the jar. During her struggle the phone
rang so she asked her 4-year-old daughter to
answer the phone. "Mommy can't come to the
phone to talk to you right now. She's hitting the
bottle."
A little boy got lost at the YMCA and found himself in the women's locker room. When he was
spotted, the room burst into shrieks, with ladies
grabbing towels and running for cover. The little boy watched in amazement and then asked,
"What's the matter, haven't you ever seen a little boy before?"
While taking a routine vandalism report at an
elementary school, I was interrupted by a little
girl about 6 years old. Looking up and down at
my uniform, she asked, "Are you a policeman?"
"Yes," I answered and continued writing the report. "My mother said if I ever needed help I
should ask the police. Well, then," she said as
she extended her foot toward me, "would you
please tie my shoe?"
It was the end of the day when I parked my police van in front of the station. As I gathered my
equipment, my K-9 partner, Jake, was barking,
and I saw a little boy staring in at me. "Is that a
dog you got back there?" he asked. "It sure is," I
replied. Puzzled, the boy looked at me and then
towards the back of the van. Finally he said,
"What'd he do?"
While working for an organization that delivers
lunches to elderly shut-ins, I used to take my 4year-old daughter on my afternoon rounds. She
was unfailingly intrigued by the various appliances of old age, particularly the canes, walkers
and wheelchairs. One day I found her staring at
a pair of false teeth soaking in a glass. As I
braced myself for the inevitable barrage of
questions, she merely turned and whispered,
"The tooth fairy will never believe this!"

by Erma Bombeck
I would have gone to bed when I was sick instead of
pretending the earth would go into a holding pattern if I weren't there for the day. I would have
burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose before it
melted in storage. I would have talked less and listened more. I would have invited friends over to
dinner even if the carpet was stained, or the sofa
faded. I would have eaten the popcorn in the 'good'
living room and worried much less about the dirt
whensomeonewantedtolighta ireinthe ireplace.
I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather ramble about his youth. I would have shared
more of the responsibility carried by my husband. I
would never have insisted the car windows be
rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just
been teased and sprayed. I would have sat on the
lawn with my grass stains. I would have cried and
laughed less while watching television and more
while watching life. I would never have bought anything just because it was practical, wouldn't show
soil, or was guaranteed to last a lifetime. Instead of
wishing away nine months of pregnancy, I'd have
cherished every moment and realized that the wonderment growing inside me was the only chance in
life to assist God in a miracle. When my kids kissed
me impetuously, I would never have said, "Later.
Now go get washed up for dinner." There would
have been more "I love you's" More "I'm sorry's."
But mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize
every minute...look at it and really see it . . live it and
never give it back.
