Hopefully everything has returned to normal for you and your families. During CCW’s hiatus during the summer, we continued our support of the SHIP soup kitchen, and supported the Knights’ blood drive by baking goodies for blood donors. Many thanks to Jo Anne Bixler and Diane Mihalow for leading those efforts, as well as the members who participated in them. Macy’s Shop for a Cause, one of our major fundraisers, also generated $435 for us. Thanks to all who staffed the ticket tables after masses, and to those who bought tickets. No one knows better than you, OUR MEMBERS, what a fantastic group of women CCW is! Please invite your friends to join us as a member, or at any of our upcoming sessions if they want to “try us out”! Here are some additional highlights that you can look forward to this fall: Monday, September 19 – Our first meeting at 7PM in the parish hall. Diane Traflet, Associate Dean of the Immaculate Conception Seminary at Seton Hall University, will speak with us about women saints. Diane has presented to us in years past and always done a great job. Members still fondly recall her presentations of Edith Stein and Therese of Lisieux. I am sure the saint she chooses as her topic this year will be equally fascinating! Sunday , September 25 – Our annual parish picnic. This year’s theme is Harvest Hoedown! Tickets available starting September 10 after all masses. Please come and enjoy the food, games, and fellowship. Monday, October 17 – Membership Meeting – Presentation by Learning Rx on how to train your brain to learn faster, easier and better. Great for both kids and adults – who wouldn’t benefit if their brains worked more effectively? Saturday, October 22 – Called to Outrageous Hope – A Women’s Morning Spiritual Retreat, 9AM – 12PM at Mount St. Mary House of Prayer in Watchung. Just listen to today’s news, and you know we are all called to have hope in Someone greater than ourselves! Doris Donnelly says that “Hope suffers the fate of the middle child. On either side of her are her two more popular sisters, faith and charity, leaving hope invisible, or ignored, and frequently misunderstood.” This topic will bring this middle child to the fore and emphasize how important and necessary hope really is, especially in today’s world. The day includes a talk, the viewing a portion of the movie, The Shawshank Redemption, and time for reflection, prayer and sharing. This promises to be an uplifting session – don’t miss it! Monday, November 14 – Our annual Jesse Tree meeting at 7PM in the parish hall. Help us prepare the Jesse Tree gift tags that enable our parishioners to provide gifts and a touch of God’s love to the needy during the Christmas Season! Monday, December 12 – Our annual Christmas Social at Luna Rossa in Pluckemin. Good food and drink, an always fun gift swap – what a great way to enjoy this special season! Before I close this note, I would like to thank Mary Allen for her many years of service to CCW and our parish. Mary is being transferred to Dallas by her company in September. She has been with us for 9 years, serving the last 6 as VP. She has been a key leader for our organization, chairing the Scholarship Committee, the Membership Drive and generally (and generously) doing anything that needed to be done. Mary, we have all been so blessed having you as our friend. We will miss you and wish you all the best. God bless you and your family in your move to Dallas! In Christ, Michele Save the date! Farewell Dear CCW Friends, At the beginning of the summer I learned that my position at AT&T had been transferred to the . headquarters location in Dallas, Texas and that I must move before the September CCW membership meeting. So I am writing this note to say good-bye and thank you for all of the friendships, spiritual enrichment and opportunities to join you in service to our community that I have enjoyed over the last 9 years. I will miss you all and fondly remember the good times that we have shared. If your travels ever bring you to Dallas please look me up. My email address will remain allen_20blossom@msn.com. Warm Regards, Mary Allen October Meeting Monday 17, 7:00pm Learning Rx Does your child have difficulty with schoolwork? Trouble reading or reading aloud? Poor comprehension? Difficulty paying attention or following verbal instructions? Would you like your child to have greater confidence and to learn and work faster, easier and more independently? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then this presentation is for you! Do you struggle to remember names? Do you have trouble remembering where you put things? Do you have difficulty maintaining your focus? Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed with the demands of managing your own or your busy family’s schedule? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then this presentation is for you! Do you care for a loved one who has suffered from a concussion, stroke or other Traumatic Brain Injury? Do you care for an elderly family member who is increasingly forgetful? Do you know someone who could benefit from improved attention and memory, faster processing and better mental clarity? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then this presentation is for you! *********************************************************************************** ** We all learn or struggle to learn for a reason. Join LearningRx Warren’s Executive Director Marcia Douglas to learn more about cognitive skills and how they impact learning and performance in people of all ages. Cognitive skills are the basic mental thinking tools we use to process information of all kinds. They include attention, memory, logic and reasoning, auditory and visual processing, and processing speed. Learn more about these skills and how pinpointing and then strengthening deficient skills with one-on-one brain training can transform your own life or the life of someone you love. LearningRx is the leading provider of one-on-one brain training. This is not tutoring, and we do not work from standard worksheets or workbooks. We are more like a personal trainer for your brain. We use a variety of intense but game-like exercises and activities to strengthen your brain! We help people of all ages and abilities (anyone from 4 -104 years old!) to strengthen their mental skills in order to make things in school, work and life, faster, easier and more efficient. This will be a short, informative presentation followed by an opportunity to ask questions and try out some of our exercises to feel your own brains at work! This is not a sales pitch – just a chance to learn about an important topic and to give your brain a fun workout. CCW Scholarship Winners In 2011 the Blessed Sacrament Council of Catholic Women was very pleased to present our annual scholarship to two very deserving graduating seniors, Dennis O’Heney and Kate Wullert. CCW members who regularly attend the 10:30 Mass will recognize Dennis & Katie as long-time members of the music ministry. The scholarships were presented at the May membership meeting in the presence of their parents, Msgr. Prus, Patty Marshall, Danny Neff, and Frank Schifiano, for whose late wife, Ellie, the scholarship is named. We wish Katie & Dennis continued success as they begin their college careers at Boston College & Lafayette, respectively. SHIP'S GALLEY SOUP KITCHEN Well it was a long hot summer in the soup kitchen. We dispensed with our meatloaf lunch as it was too hot to turn on the ovens and heat everything. Plus it would melt all our volunteers. So we changed the menu to hot dogs, salad, soup, bananas and dessert. Thanks to the members who worked with me this July and August - Ann Meisenbacher, Michele Smith, Kathleen Ellsworth who baked some delicious cakes for the guests, Judie Stahl, Pat Lewis and former parishioners Rob and Donna Vandenbulcke. My niece Maureen Sessa also joined us in order to do some community service. This is her second summer with the soup kitchen. September will see the return of the meatloaf. Our supply is very low so if you can make a meatloaf for us, please bake it, wrap it in foil, freeze it and put it in a sealer bag and mark the date on it. Put it in the freezer at church. We can use donations all year long. Call JoAnne Bixler for more information. November Meeting Monday, November 14 at 7:00pm Jesse Tree Project! Our November meeting will again be our time to make the gift tags for our annual Christmas Jesse Tree project. The Jesse Tree project provides hundreds of Christmas gifts to local charities for their clients particulary the children. Examples of the charities we help are Catholic Charities, SHIP, the Jail Chaplaincy for the children of the prisoners and more agencies that can use our help. So everyone please come and enjoy this fun and rewarding activity of preparing the gift tags for the Jesse Tree. If you can, please bring your scissors and hole punchers. Then just relax, enjoy good company, munch on some yummy snacks and become part of the spirit of the Christmas season. See you all there! Don’t forget to bring your membership registration form & dues to the September 19th meeting or mail them to Mary Ellen Schleckser @ 1758 Merriam Dr., Martinsville, NJ 08836 Join Us on a Great Adventure Beginning in September, Blessed Sacrament will host another Bible Study – “The Great Adventure Bible Timeline”. The format consists of workbook guided home scripture readings, small group discussions and DVD instructions by Jeff Cavins, bible scholar. Given a choice between Tuesday morning or Thursday evening, this 24 session study will be offered in three-eight week segments with a month off at Christmas and Easter. It will start September 27 or 29 and end May 29 or 31 respectively. For more details or questions, call Barbara Hoff 908-647-5749 or Ro Bersch 908-470-0678 or find a registration form at the entrance to the church and in the church bulletin. Don’t be “put off” by the length of the study. Convenient arrangements can be made for missed sessions. Please consider joining us.
