Maybe more than any of his previous albums,
Xavier Rudd’s Dark Shades of Blue is a balance
of darkness and light. That’s what the Australian
singer-songwriter/one-man band/didgeridoo
virtuoso hears in the disc.
Produced by Rudd and mixed by Joe Barresi
(Tool, Queens of the Stone Age), Dark Shades of
Blue finds Rudd at his most assertive, heavy and
psychedelic. Dusky and cool, the disc’s guitardriven jams expand on a sound only hinted at on
previous releases, as distortion often supplants
the pretty jangly guitars heard on earlier work, like
2007’s White Moth. While Rudd’s signature
didgeridoo remains, along with the myriad of
instruments and voices featured on other records,
the results are less “world music” than they are the
makings of a truly global record. The disc’s
opener, “Black Water” emerges from a “Voodoo
Chile”-like beginning, before rising and falling like
a mighty sonic wave. The title track is equal parts
tempered, fuzzed-out funk, unrestrained Ben
Harper and Tool-ish swirls of a groove threatening
to explode. There’s tension, yes, but also lonely
beauty in songs like “Shiver.”
The past few years have been a
whirlwind for the singer. In between soldout tours in Europe, Canada, Australia
and the U.S., he’s supported the likes of
the Dave Matthews Band, Jack Johnson
and Ben Harper, and has been working
on the film score for fellow-surfer and
Rudd-enthusiast Matthew
McConaughey’s Surfer Dude, co-starring
Woody Harrelson and Willie Nelson.

It’s Bad For Ya
George Carlin
For more than five decades, award-winning comedian, actor, and
author George Carlin has used his razor sharp humor to point out
hypocrisy in people’s actions and words. And now Carlin
continues to make audiences laugh and think with the release of
his latest CD “It’s Bad For Ya,” recorded live at the Wells Fargo
Center for the Arts in Santa Rosa, California in March 2008. “It’s
Bad For Ya” features Carlin’s noted irreverent observations on
such taboo subjects as religion, death, patriotism and big business,
as well as pungent examinations of modern language and the
“decrepit state of the American culture.”
- Full Page Ads in 944, Zink BPM
In all, Carlin has released 22 solo albums (18 stand-up albums and
4 audiobooks), which have been nominated for Grammy Awards
ten times and taken home the coveted prize four times. In 1972, a
recording contract led to the release of “FM” & “AM,” an album that
went Gold, the first of four successive Gold albums that Carlin
recorded for Little David Records during the first half of the 1970’s.
Carlin says of his latest CD release, “Doing new stuff is a point of
pride with me. People may not consider it so, but stand-up comedy
is one of the performing arts, and artists are supposed to grow and
evolve over time. Through the years, my technique has sharpened,
my writing has improved and even my observations have grown
richer. For a person like me, age is an asset.” Proud of the fact that
every two years he goes out on tour with all new material, Carlin
continued, "I can't do old material; I would feel like a failure. this
job is that of a writer, but a writer who doesn’t produce new work
all the time is not a writer –he’s a typist.”

Grand Ole Party
Grand Ole Party
When Kristin Gundred, the lead vocalist of
Grand Old Party lets loose with one of her primal
blues wails, strong men salivate and weak crawl,
as Gundred herself boasts on "Look Out Young
Son", the opening track of Humanimals. "I must
be the devil's daughter," she sings in a sexy,
no holds barred tone, before declaring — "Look
out young son, when I bloom you'll come a
crawlin'." Grand Ole Party is what used to be
called a power trio; Gundred on vocals and
drums, dropping a solid, basic heart-thumping
groove, Mike Kerchnyak keeping the beat moving
forward with his propulsive bass lines and Paul
Labno on guitar alternating between short tasty
lead lines and clanging, funky comped chords.
There isn't a trace of indie rock pretense nor any
art rock poses, just solid blues based tunes,
driven by Labno's ability to add dramatic guitar
flourishes that impress without overwhelming the
arrangements and Gundred's voice, a one in a
million howl that calls to mind everyone from Mae
West, to Bessie Smith, Grace Slick and of
course, Janis Joplin.

The Time Machine Tour
After touring constantly for 12 months, Darren
Hayes is about to release a stunning live
concert DVD of his most ambitious and critically
acclaimed concert tour to date: The Time
Machine Tour. Quietly selling out London’s
prestigious Royal Albert Hall, Hayes
audaciously toured a show that had more in
common with Pink Floyd than American Idol.
The show, designed by legendary U2 and
Rolling Stones designer Willie Williams
featured, amongst other things, a 24 foot
animatronics steel and neon origami bird and
set pieces straight from a Jules Verne novel.
The DVD marks the completion of a project that
has seen Hayes graduate from pop star to label
head and CEO of his own independent record
company. A year before the likes of Radiohead
decided to snub major label EMI, Hayes had
announced plans to go it alone via his own label
Powdered Sugar – releasing his double album
This Delicate Thing We’ve Made with little
fanfare. Just great songs, intricate art piece
music videos and a blistering live band.
Accountants, managers and suits ties advised
him against spending so much of his own
money on such a show. But Hayes famously
ignored them and took the elaborate production all
over the UK and Australia. The DVD was shot in
his hometown of Brisbane Australia on the final
night of tour. “This was the tour I’ve always
dreamed of. Bowie and Peter Gabriel made the
blueprint for this type of rock theatre – and
although it sounds morbid, doing a show like this
was one of my ‘before I die’ wishes. I simply had
to do something like this once in my life and I
couldn’t think of a better moment than this period
to try,” Hayes said.

Week review
Prince Fatty, a group melded for a one off
project by producer/engineer Mike Pelanconi
(recent credits include Lily Allen’s smash
“Alright Still and Little Barrie’s Stand Your
Ground) that gained such significant
momentum in underground reggae circles
that recording a full length album together
seemed to be the next logical step. Hitting
the recording studio, Pelanconi’s “dream
team” worked on tracks, the result being
Survival of the Fattest.
The Prince Fatty sound is truly unique. It is
designed to dub your feet with rock steady
beats and stimulate your brain waves in a
jazz like way. Delivered in an up beat,
positive and organic funk fashion and mixed
in an analog haze of vintage spring reverbs,
tape echoes and custom hi-grade mixing
console, Prince Fatty won’t disappoint the
lovers of the early ‘70s sound but will entice
listeners of modern day dub to groove to its
beats.
Showcasing a guest line up that will make
any dub reggae fan giddy which includes

Lipstick On The Mirror
Pop Evil
2008 is shaping up to be a very successful year
for Red State Rockers POP EVIL which has
steadily built a grassroots following since forming
in November of 2001. Leigh Kakaty (lead vocals),
Dave Grahs (Guitar), and Dylan Allison formed
the early stages of the band in Grand Rapids,
Michigan. They recently signed to upstart record
Label Pazzo Music run by 25 year music veterans
George Cappellini and Charlie Brusco. After
continually playing shows throughout the Midwest
POP EVIL decided to go into the studio with Al
Sutton (Kid Rock) to record. In 2005 the band
released their first EP entitled “Ready or Not.”
Already having sold over 12,000 copies
throughout the Mid West the band is ready to
release their upcoming debut album. Leigh claims
that “It is amazing to see the level of support that
we now receive in areas other than our home
town (Grand Rapids). Everywhere we go fans
know the words to our songs. It feels really good
to see people relating to and embracing the music
that we have created.”

For Ohio-based Tim Story, American
neo-classical composer and expert in
synth-assisted exploration, the Lunz
collaborative project is a lifelong dream.
His partner in the sublime is HansJoachim Roedelius, the man behind
Brian Eno favorites Cluster and a
musical maverick whom Story has
longed to work with ever since he first
heard the cerebral, eerie, proto-Aphex
strains of Germany’s Cluster in the ’70s.
