New Magazine To Stimulate Memories!
Lifetime is a new large-print magazine for older people who like
reading, but who are beginning to have trouble with their
memories. It's written and published by Jude Irwin, whose
parents both have dementia. "I kept wishing there was
something they could read easily that would be interesting for
them," says Jude, who is a writer and designer. "I noticed
ordinary magazines and newspapers were too 'busy' and the
text was too small. So I decided to create a monthly magazine
for people like them, based on their own memories of the past.
The first issue features both mum and dad, and it's already
opened up a whole new world for us. It stimulates endless topics
of conversation and they are both thrilled to see themselves in print. They can read
the magazine on their own or share it with others, and each conversation brings up
something new. I hope more families will benefit from Lifetime, as we have. I also
hope more readers – or their families on their behalf – will come forward with their
own stories and pictures, so they will see themselves in the pages of Lifetime."
Issues cost £1.65 each, plus postage, or £12.95 including postage for six
months' subscription. If you'd like to know more, or would like to subscribe,

Fancy a Holiday?
Wrexham Carers Service have been lucky enough to have been given the
opportunity to offer a free weekend break to one of our Carers courtesy of

The holiday is for two people to stay at either of the Bond Hotels (St. Anne’s or

transportation and equipment and they strive to offer the best possible facilities for
their disabled guests.
To be in with a chance of winning, all you have to do is let us know why you deserve
it, in less than 100 words. Because of the specialist equipment and facilities that are
available at the Bond Hotels priority will go to someone who will make best use of the

Emily’s Ball
Helping to Raise Autism Awareness
throughout
the
U.K.
Autism affects 1 in 100 - which is
roughly 30,000 people in Wales.
Despite this, much less is known
about autism than other conditions
which have similar prevalence. A lack
of awareness in our public services,
as well as the general population,
can have huge implications for a
person with autism. All too often,
they will have problems getting
appropriate
support,
and
can
encounter a whole number of
difficulties in their school, their place
of work, or their community.
Jo (Emily's Mum) says "Autism is all
around us, we can help people with
autism enter our world, if we encourage
them to let us into theirs". Autism should
be celebrated. This is the reason for
Emily's_Ball.
The ticket price is £45 and includes:
 Red Carpet Arrival
 Glass of Wine on Arrival
 3 Course Meal
 Oona Linnett Harpist
 Entertainment including Britain's Got
Talent’s Jamie Pugh
 Music by Rebel and the Chief
 Guest Appearance by DJ's Jagger &
Woody from Real Radio.
 Autistic Superstars Star Carly Ryan
Special "surprise" Guest
There will be a raffle and Auction on the

Carers of Substance Misusers
People with alcohol and drug related problems are often not fully understood
by the people around them whether it is close family members or friends. This
lack of understanding can sometimes drive those people away, those people
who have been supportive and just at a time when their support is most
required.
Wrexham Carers Service can provide support to anyone who is looking after another
person and can offer a wide variety of support and interventions. One to one support
and information specifically for Carers of Substance Misusers is also available. If you
wish to discuss your situation with a member of the team, please do not hesitate to
contact us on 01978 318812 or email carers@avow.org
Counselling
Would you like to talk to someone in a calm, friendly and confidential
environment? If yes, then the free counselling sessions at Wrexham Carers
Service could help.
The free counselling sessions are with a trained counsellor, on a one to one basis
and are confidential. Counselling can help you make sense of your new or on-going
life as a carer, whether in specific areas such as dealing with bereavement or
separation from a loved one, or with the more general feelings of stress, anxiety and
depression you experience in your caring role.
Please note, You must be registered with Wrexham Carers Service to be
eligible for the free counselling sessions.

Equipment ~ Buy Sell Swap’ . The group is set up purely for buying and selling
of new and used special needs equipment and related items! They also have
recommendations and links to other groups and websites!”

NetBuddy
www.netbuddy.org.uk is an award-winning website for parents, carers and
learning disability professionals. It is a space to hunt for ideas, swap tips and
access information on everything from brushing teeth to challenging behavior.
All the information on the site is submitted by people with first-hand experience of
learning disability, and is organised under quick searches such as ‘Dressing &
undressing’ ‘Out and about’ ‘Behaviour’ and ‘Routines’. There are also practical
information packs on subjects like financial help and jobs & training, plus a friendly
interactive forum.
“Netbuddy works because people in the special needs
community like to support each other. If there’s an
opportunity to help someone else, they nearly always
will.”
